Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina rarely misses a chance to slam President Trump. Yesterday morning the failed 2016 candidate for the GOP nomination again upped the ante, reacting to The Washington Post report that Trump dictated his son’s initial misleading statement about his meetup with Russians:
“That was a bad decision by the president, which will make us ask more questions,” Graham said on NBC’s Today show. “When you get caught in a lie about one thing, it makes it hard to just say ‘let the other stuff go.’”
Repeatedly, Graham chooses against giving Trump any benefit of the doubt, as a president’s party supporters usually do, instead going out of his way to extend and expand the impact of negative news.
Is this just revenge for nasty stuff Trump said when they were campaign rivals? Or is he laying the groundwork for a 2020 primary challenge?
I suspect the latter. One reason is Graham’s vote last week in favor of the so-called “skinny” Obamacare repeal, which failed and seemingly ended the GOP’s “repeal and replace” crusade. With that vote Graham preserved the argument to core conservatives that he sided with them on abolishing Obamacare.
But just before that vote Graham trashed the legislation, calling it a “fraud” and “terrible policy.” When his close friend John McCain chose to cast the decisive vote against the bill, Graham was free to vote in favor.
Preserving his anti-Obamacare credentials is not demonstrably necessary for Graham to maintain popularity in South Carolina, where he enjoys widespread support. It only makes sense for gaining ground among conservatives nationwide.
How Graham would fare in a 2020 battle against Trump is questionable, given his lackluster run last time. But it looks like he is doing everything possible to undermine Trump, shore up his appeal to primary voters and keep the option open.

pardon the pun, but the latest buzz from Bloomberg:
The number of U.S. honeybees, a critical component in the agriculture industry, rose in 2017 from a year earlier, and deaths of the insects attributed to a mysterious malady that’s affected hives in North America and Europe declined, according a U.S. Department of Agriculture honeybee health survey released Tuesday.
looks like we’re back in bees nests 🙂
on the 2020 horizon another senator to compete in the goper beauty pageant (“who wants another flake for president?” a certain Lindsey style retort) will be the other senator from az.
Chicago trib: Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake takes GOP to task over Trump
Republican Sen. Jeff Flake has a message for his party: Get a spine and stand up to President Donald Trump. It’s time for Congress to act as a brake on the president’s erratic impulses.
In a scolding book, Flake argues that his fellow Republicans are letting Trump lead the country away from conservative principles and staying silent as “the government of the United States has been made dysfunctional at the highest levels.”
patd – my house has been a condo for a large number of carpenter bees. I did all the nice stuff, like environmentally friendly, to kill them the first couple of years. Then I moved to the living better through chemistry attack. I swear the stuff made them more productive. This year they were active and doing strong until March. Then they went missing. Now there appears to be only one left. I am not sad. There are wood piles all over the area, yet they decided to destroy my house.
One problem is the other bees are not around either. Or butterflies.
excerpt quoted by golf.com from the upcoming sports illustrated article re wh trump “dump”:
At most other golf courses in America the TV is tuned to Golf Channel, on mute, but throughout last summer and fall, the television in Trump Bedminster’s shop was on Fox News, with the sound blaring. As President, Trump has already made four visits to the club. He has his own cottage adjacent to the pool; it was recently given a secure perimeter by the Secret Service, leading to the inevitable joke that it’s the only wall Trump has successfully built. Chatting with some members before a recent round of golf, he explained his frequent appearances: “That White House is a real dump.” (A White House spokesperson denies this occurred.) Trump is often at his most unguarded among the people who pay for their proximity to him. Last November, the President-elect hosted a cocktail reception and dinner at Bedminster on the same weekend that he was holding interviews at the club with candidates for his Cabinet. At the dinner, Trump addressed the members of the club by saying, “This is my real group. You are the special people. I see all of you. I recognize, like, 100% of you, just about.” Then he issued an open invitation to drop in on his Cabinet interviews the next day.
usatoday: Trump thinks the ‘White House is a real dump,’ report says
some more good news from wapo:
A federal appeals court issued a ruling Tuesday that could help preserve a key subsidy that benefits health insurers and millions of Americans under the Affordable Care Act. The ruling could make it more difficult for the White House to carry out recent threats by President Trump to cut off the payments, giving legal standing to a new set of the payments’ defenders.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled that a coalition of 16 state attorneys general, all of whom want to preserve the subsidies, may intervene in the appeal of a lawsuit over the fate of cost-sharing subsidies — payments the government makes to insurers on behalf of about 7 million low-income Americans who receive breaks on their health plans’ deductibles and other out-of-pocket costs.

boss, not too sure beating war drums is a good way for Lindsey to go as he seemed to be doing yesterday on today show:
There will be war between the United States and North Korea over the rogue nation’s missile program if it continues to aim intercontinental ballistic missiles at America, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said President Donald Trump has told him.
“He has told me that. I believe him,” the lawmaker said Tuesday on TODAY. “If I were China, I would believe him, too, and do something about it.”
[…]
“If there’s going to be a war to stop [Kim Jong Un], it will be over there. If thousands die, they’re going to die over there. They’re not going to die here. And He has told me that to my face,” Graham said.

#45’s dump comment may be more a diss at the Obamas (read: black) than towards the White House itself, especially in light of the latest President’s upbringing.
repugs are culpable…graham had his chance and although I do not want to diss any distant relatives? flake is trying to sell his book…where were all of these guys last year when mcconnell denied the russian influence and threatened obama to not use his influence on the election? They were getting their agenda ready and without a mandate…forcing it down our throats. Promise to the people? Deniers of election corruption at every step .
Now the repugs are stuck with this guy and they wonder why they stink, too!
the trump comment about the ‘slum conditions’ of the WH? More ‘burning the black’ out of the WH. This from a sleazy, mafia welfare king?
I have never changed my resolve on this junta — Tower trash go home.
When Graham faded in his presidential bid, he supported Cruz. In my numerous missives to him, his replies have been less than non-committal when it comes to support of updates to the ACA in the context of supporting the people of our state, South Carolina. He is bright, jocular and articulate; he draws reporters like flies. I sense he is more popular out of our state than in it, that he will face a strenuous campaign should he decide to run for reelection for his Senate seat in 2020, and that he will run another failed campaign should he run for president. He will not carry South Carolina.
Agree, Blond Wino, where were they? Writing a book is nice but unless you can use it to swat time backwards & undo the unthinkable it’s a nice read that will cause countless talking heads to bob in agreement, yep, yep, yep, told you so.
Our representatives have to seize the moment & act accordingly. Woulda Shoulda Coulda is a sad epitaph.
Will welcome though any competent opposition to #45. Even if it’s late to the cause & self-serving, at least it’s one more voice.

That is really good news about the bees. Let us hope it continues. Now if we could do something about the albatross, frogs and elephants, all of which demonstrate severe environmental hazards that human beings are not going to like at all.
PatD, yesterday I almost added Graham’s war hawk talk to this post as another sign he’s playing to right wing primary voters, but got a bit lazy
wish giraffes could fare as well as bees, they’re going extinct

Bees. I’m in (kinda). Yesterday LP found that wasps had gotten into the room he hangs out in with his electronics and were building a nest up in the corner of the window casing behind the blinds – it was about 2″ in diameter. Pogo to the rescue. Pulled out a cordless vac, sucked up the wasps on the nest then knocked it down and took it outside. Glad he saw it – if it had stayed there there would have been about 24-30 young wasps in the room whenever they emerged from the nest.
BB, I have a friend whose house has been beset by carpenter bees – and woodpeckers. I’m guessing the woodpeckers came to get the bees. The fascia on his back porch is practically destroyed.
So it looks like early challengers to the bullsh*t pulpit occupier may be Graham and Flake. I suspect Graham might fare better this time – considering that the repugs have now gotten to see chaos in action.
Craig
I used elephants, but the giraffes are on that list of animals being robbed of habitat, killed for imaginary medicines, and hunted by the disgusting types who like heads on walls of their home abattoirs.
Unfortunately for the Tower Trash, the White House just doesn’t have enough gold plating plastered on everything for their tastes.
jamie….thanks for the heads-up on monarchs…we might as well include feeding of migratory birds. With climate change, food sources have changed. I am one who firmly believes in not feeding the wild life, wholesale…but, we do feed the birds, bees and butterflies in my backyard. Migratory animals have had a rough time of it lately and the thousands of miles traveled by these creatures? Life saving. Bird migrations. Humans can help the wild life. We have seen a couple of monarchs this year, but the hummingbird population is down from last year. I have a natural mix of wild flowers to attract the birds, bees and butterflies. In the winter? We let our broccoli plants flower. I have a hummingbird feeder as this areas sees 17 migratory types of hummers during the late summer.
So many wild animals going, going — gone.
Craig, I think it depends on his outside competition. South Carolinians are loyal when outsiders threaten, but if the Messiah were to appear…
Also, Graham doesn’t have deep pockets. I think he could be convinced to choose the Senate one more time.
Craig, Al Franken deserves the credit for tripping-up sessions…sessions DID recuse himself which set-off the falling dominoes into an investigation of the russian theft of our election process and a prez that welcomes this meddling and the ruskies, themselves, with open arms.
Did the man of action, sign the sanctions bill, yet??
Not sure about Flake. I’m sure he despises Trump. That said when he talks about conservative principals he is using code for the time honored republican desireTo gut programs like social security, Medicare ,etc. Conservative principals do not include an effective social safety net, support of public education, regulation of big banks and financial insturions, or regulations that provide clean air and water.
Flake was tea party before tea party was popular and I doubt that he has changed.
I see him as little more than a Koch brothers republican. Bad policies dressed up in Brooks Brothers attire.
I don’t care who runs for president on the Republican side… they won’t get my vote. Not in the NH primary (we’ll see if we are allowed to keep the first one)… nor in the general election.
Gee… I was in my local independent bookstore yesterday and saw Franken’s new book. I did not buy it… I’ll have to rectify that mistake soon.
yeah… woodpeckers have done a job on our place too… but I love them anyways.
If any of these so called republican moderates were serious about sidlineing Trump. Three of them would walk into McConnell’s office and tell him that these are the things we support and the things we don’t. We are voting as a block, with or with or without your blessing. Without us you will never have fifty. We caucus every Monday over lunch.
They would own Trump and McConnell both.
trump’s kitchen cabinet…a bit greasy I would say. Payday loans, corey l (helped breitbart in trump rally assault on snarky female reporter bannon wanted to dump anyway) and the influence in the WH.
A dark horse GOP contender might be Brian Sandoval from Nevada. He is going to have time on his hands and he presents himself very well. The complete anthiisis of Trump. A sharp guy who brings some things to the table.
That said, it is immaterial to me who the GOP runs. I stand with RR they will never get my vote.
the upside to all this is that if Trumps numbers continue to tank he may not even qualify for the debates.?
as for the gop nom? After trump? I thing the repugs need some form of punishment (these words from the prez about women who undergo an abortion). Can we have them sit-out the next potus run? Even with that? The dems would still lose.
The day the dems wake-up to the data, the digital reality of our election future? They will begin to win. The dems have to define cyber warfare…pass laws to get the very criminals that cause this disruption. The repugs want elections to be about personality instead of party…their values still are not mine. The smoke and mirrors of the repug party? Always trying to hide their threadbare policies for the masses…they are beholding to their warlord mega corporations. The current repugs lie through their teeth to get elected.
Renee, I need a visceral dislike before I will decline to vote for a Democratic candidate in favor of a similarly qualified candidate with a different affiliation. Usually, I will skip that contest.
For too long, the citizens of the US of AA have been victims of cyber wars and hacking attacks. Why is it always in the shadows? If we bring the dark side of the internets to the sunlight? We can begin to dismantle the cyber attacks…fake news, binary confusion and hacking, etc.. Cyber hacking is the number one crime problem…not humans as trump would want you to believe.
faux news…fake news…look at the spin on the firing of Preet who was investigating the phony news organization. Legitimatizing faux news was the beginning of the end for Americans. trump is really the bad news here.
Speaking of things environmental, it is “Earth Overshoot Day”. The earth cannot make up in one year the resources we have exhausted. We are now in deficit of things we really shouldn’t be without.
Earth Overshoot Day
Waiting for the preibus book….from 2013, the repugs plan to steal the election. Along with the ruskies, faux news, fake news (online and radio), machine learning and data fix this change in the electoral college also helped a patsy win the WH with a minority vote.
The repugs will have to give-up the ‘phony majority’ power which appears to be useless in congress at this point anyway.
6 days and counting…the sanctions bill sits in the WH and does trump fear that putie may release the vid of wee wee-leaks fame if trump does sign?
RR, wasn’t suggesting anyone vote for Graham, but it’s worth watching who challenges Trump for the nomination and whether he will face a long and bruising GOP primary season. Presidents who must fight to the bitter end for their party’s nod tend to lose the general election.
Right now, Graham is leading the way in taking the risk of antagonizing Trump voters with his harsh words about the prez. Others will join him if Trump loses further ground and Graham proves it’s safe.

RR, wasn’t suggesting anyone vote for Graham
Craig… I know you weren’t… just being a good pundit in looking at the overall picture. Right now the Repugs must be looking at the 2020 presidential election and thinking “that race will be wide open”. Especially if the 2018 election goes bad for them.
Yeah… SFB signed the sanctions bill…. but blasted it as “unconstitutional”.
WTF would he know what is or isn’t unconstitutional or otherwise… putz!
These political mice will have to pry the nomination from president ha’pence’s cold dead fingers.
pence hasn’t been leaking like Niagara Falls just to see rosenkrantz or guildenstern rob him of his seat in the dump.
Mex prez and Boy Scouts deny Trump claims they called to praise him. Hope he just lied — even scarier if he’s delusional and believes it happened.
Poobah, let me get this straight. SFB signed a law sanctioning Russia for election interference that he claims did not happen and claims in a signing statement that it has serious flaws and unconstitutional provisions? My, how strange is that? Signing a bill he believes is unconstitutional kinda violates his oath to preserve and protect the Constitution doesn’t it?
Jace, your 9:30 post is positively inspired.

But his own company is on the lookout for foreign workers. “Over the next short period of time, you’re going to see things announced that you won’t even believe for our country and for selling products in our country and making product in our country and things that are great for American jobs,” Trump said.
Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Florida requested permission from the Labor Department to hire 70 foreign workers in the fall using H-2B visas.
His business also requested permission to hire six foreign cooks at his golf club in nearby Jupiter.
Earlier this week, the Department of Homeland Security made an additional 15,000 H-2B visas available for seasonal workers this fiscal year.
That type of visa is granted to temporary, nonagricultural foreign workers when there aren’t enough American workers willing or able to do a job.
and this one from the new Yorker in march

The President has a dim view of extending visas to employees in the technology industry. But, when it comes to his club, it’s a different story.
Can they hold a debate without Trumpet? Can they have something in place and wait until he’s out of the country & then debate so he doesn’t bluster-bluff over everyone?

Pogo, fairly clear isn’t it that Trump has no intention of fully enforcing the sanctions.
And Tillerson reportedly has no intention of spending the money Congress appropriated for combating Russia’s cyber war:

If Trump runs in 2020 (doubtful), and you are want to prevent his re-election (unconscionable), then register Republican and vote against him in the primary.
Not a good sign for Sarah facing WH reporters within the hour: aides just found her in fetal position under her desk.
Would Trump’s immigrant grandfather be barred under his new means-tested, language requirement? Was dirt poor, didn’t speak English.
1. The hucksterix is irrelevant.
2. Bink’s suggestion is a wonderful idea. Also, America will need to place lots of patriotic moles in all the russopublican Senate, House, and Governor campaigns. Organize with four ops per cell (uh, caucus) for each handler. Four handlers per supervisor and four supervisors per congressional district.
And, let’s not forget the State Legislative campaigns !
We’ll need plenty of healthy grassroots operations in every congressional district across the good old USA !
And, May G!D Bless America !
In the grandpimp trump’s day the means-tested language requirement would have significantly retarded US growth. The population today would probably be only 250 M!LL!ON, more or less 10%.
We have sufficient law to deal w/trumpimps of today without resorting to a retroactive means-tested language requirement – just in case that’s what you had in mind, sir. In fact, we are well armed and deployed under General Mueller, who despite being a repub, himself, is a damned fine strategist and field commander. He will take prisoners, I assure you.

bye bye, barr
Looking forward to Mueller’s Landing.
so the above is an example of what politico reported back in april: Democrats recruit veterans early for 2018 battle
‘Washington seems like a dirty place. But so was Afghanistan. And so was Iraq. And we’re going to clean it up.’
[….]
They’ll formalize the focus on recruiting veterans on Tuesday, with a meeting at headquarters between DCCC leaders and Vote Vets, a liberal group focused on veterans’ issues, convened by Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), herself a veteran who was one of the Democrats to flip a Senate seat last year.
“Especially among the younger generation of veterans, you have a community that is far less conservative than people might think,” Duckworth said, adding that she’s talked in depth about House races in 2018 or 2020 to a dozen veterans among people just back from tours and those expecting to be completing them soon — including two female helicopter pilots.
Duckworth says she’s been urging them to think of Congress as to how to extend their service and have a voice on the Defense budget and international affairs.
Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.), who’ll also be at the Tuesday meeting, is already deep into his own personal recruitment project, claiming 22 fellow veterans who have either committed to run or are in deep conversations with Democrats about the possibility.
“I don’t think you have to be a veteran to run for office, but when you’re looking for a group of people who might be able to rise above the bitter partisan gridlock, veterans are a good place to look,” Moulton said.
so what do you think are retired Marine Lt. Colonel Amy McGrath (D) chances of clearing that barr?
If Amy slams him and keeps slamming him smartly she can win.
She needs to take him apart and shred the pieces until he winds up as a pile of aggregate.
If she really wants to win she’s going to have to destroy him….he won’t be the first politician to be dismantled by an upstart.
And she nicely differentiates between “these” veterans “those” veterans. The ones who told her she couldn’t fly—-and the ones who told her she could.
And she’s a democrat……..I, of course, hope for an FDR democrat, but we’ll see, said the blind man to his deaf daughter.
At some time McGrath has to stop giving barr name recognition, except to call him trump-barr, and lay out her vision (for the voters) and mission (for the voters), and intermediate goals (for campaign), and timeline (for campaign). If she can do these things, keep on point, and avoid scandals, she’ll pick barr’s seat like a low hanging Georgia peach.
Always attack into either the opponent’s weakness, or an unprotected issue adjacent to the opponent. Be ferocious in the contest and gracious (to a point) in victory.
FLASHING Sign – A Monarch butterfly stopped by my big, blooming, butterfly bush for a snack. YAY.
Did SFB toss out green card limitations to hide his actually signing (in a dark closet without any love) of the Russian Sanctions act? What he and his little handed minions should be learning is that simple distractions are no longer covering up his lies and idiocy. Russia is not going away, it looks like it is growing in importance. Lies about his ugly speech to the Boy Scouts are still gaining traction. He is going down, it just depends on when the republicans decide his voters are not going to make a difference in their elections.
Immigration restrictions are not going to help anything. What is stupid is he keeps asking for temp workers for his servants. The U.S. is almost at full employment. Cutting out workers has been a losing task. Ag products rot in the fields. Low on the totem pole jobs are unfilled. Raise wages? The republicans are aghast at paying for services.
not a young adult 16 and the agents were wrong
situational ethics I am not a fan
…some disturbing imagery in McGrath’s ad. If you freeze the video when Jim Bunning’s letter to her is displayed, you can read that he refers to women as a “precious commodity”.
Wage suppression in the US & offshoring of jobs when they can squeeze out another penny of profit, while the 1% refuses to share the wealth that the 99% worked to help create…that’s the problem.
Top that with escalating healthcare and housing prices…it’s a recipe for the villagers to break out the pitchforks.
Trump’s approval rating is at 33. If he could get it up to 33 1/3 it’d be some kind of record.
Now at 33% approval soon Trump’s robot family will be all he has left.

BB, you think SFB is stoopid or something? Doesn’t realize how Hos ACTIONS are inconsistent with his LIES ( ummm, words?)?
Bink, I have considered registering repugn to vote against SFB in the 2020 pugn primary. One question– if I do how do I remove the stink?
This was right outside our front door Mr. Cracker caught it with his trusty and ancient snake catching pole while I screamed and yelled and was no help at all.
Pogo, smother yourself in motor oil, have Mrs. Pogo hose you down, then a long hot bath in sulfur soap. Stink might remain for a season or two, but you did your patriotic duty.
Trump’s bogus immigration cuts another shiny key to distract us from ongoing Russia collusion, like the already disappeared transgender ban.
1. If he could get it up to 33 1/3 it’d be some kind of record. – Mr Bink
You say you want a revolution, well you know we all want to save the world.
2. Mr. Pogo, use fresh squeezed tomato juice. Bathe in it. Rinse. Repeat. Put used tomato juice or rinse water into the hazardous waste containers. Ship ton the mar-la-ego toxic waste dump.
Motor oil, sulphur soap, tomato juice? This could be ugly.
