ny times: North Korea Claims Technological Progress in Latest Missile Launch
[….]
“Whenever news of our recent valuable victory is broadcast, the Yankees would be very much worried and the gangsters of the South Korean puppet army would get dispirited more and more,” the North’s news agency quoted the country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, as saying after watching the launch on Monday.
Mr. Kim said the North would demonstrate its missile capabilities “in a multiphased and successive way under the timetable and road map worked out by the party” in order to “send a bigger ‘package of gifts’ to the Yankees.”
North Korea has repeatedly claimed that it could strike the continental United States with a nuclear warhead, but it has never tested an intercontinental ballistic missile that can fly across the Pacific. The Trump administration has been calling on China, North Korea’s main ally, to bring “maximum pressure and engagement” to stop the North from reaching that goal.

Two American aircraft carriers, the Carl Vinson and the Ronald Reagan, are engaging in exercises in the western Pacific, not far from the Korean Peninsula. Hours after the North’s missile test on Monday, two United States supersonic B-1B Lancer bombers conducted a drill over South Korea. The North’s statement on Tuesday noted these developments, referring to the flights as a “nuclear-bomb-dropping drill,” though Lancers are no longer nuclear-capable.

from the 28 yr old White House director of strategic communications according to wapo Snubs and slights are part of the job in Trump’s White House

“President Trump has a magnetic personality and exudes positive energy, which is infectious to those around him,” Hope Hicks, a White House spokeswoman, said in a statement. “He has an unparalleled ability to communicate with people, whether he is speaking to a room of three or an arena of 30,000. He has built great relationships throughout his life and treats everyone with respect. He is brilliant with a great sense of humor . . . and an amazing ability to make people feel special and aspire to be more than even they thought possible.”

I know exactly why Jamie is such a wonderful presence in our daily Trail Mix lives. It’s because of her genes. Just look at those absolutely marvelous matriarchs in the front row of her family portrait from the 1800s.

The last segment of Morning Joe was quite special this morning. Especially important and moving was President Carter’s call-in at about 0840 with an extended tribute to Zbig and his entire family. Happy to say, Carter is all there.

China would be very happy if Kim vanished provided the impoverished North Korean population didn’t start crossing the Yalu en masse. As it stands, they are happier seeing the DPRK nukes threatening the US and Japan than other potential regional targets. Would the idiot nuke the South? Only to make the point that he could. Perhaps the major US area around Pyongtaek would be a realistic target; I don’t believe Seoul would.

I don’t think it is out of the realm to believe that the Chinese think Beijing is on the North’s target list should Kim believe their leadership was out to get him.

wapo:

It is easy to lose track of all the ways in which congressional Republicans are enabling President Trump’s ongoing slow-motion erosion of our democracy. They mostly declined to correct Trump’s lie that millions voted illegally, undermining public confidence in our system. They refuse to prod Trump to show transparency about his business holdings, covering the tracks of his untold conflicts of interest. They are resisting an independent congressional inquiry into Russian efforts to swing the election.

Those last two enabling efforts meet in the refusal of Republicans to prod Trump to release his tax returns, which could shed light on his holdings and on his potential financial dealings with Russia. And the stakes of the GOP refusal to push for those tax returns have now been underscored by a new CNN report that Russians privately claimed to have potentially compromising information that may have come from Trump’s finances:

Russian government officials discussed having potentially “derogatory” information about then-presidential candidate Donald Trump and some of his top aides in conversations intercepted by US intelligence during the 2016 election, according to two former intelligence officials and a congressional source.

One source described the information as financial in nature and said the discussion centered on whether the Russians had leverage over Trump’s inner circle. The source said the intercepted communications suggested to US intelligence that Russians believed “they had the ability to influence the administration through the derogatory information.”

To be sure, this report is a bit sketchy. The sources refused to tell CNN which aides were discussed by Russian officials, and they also allowed that this claim having potential leverage over Trump may have been Russian bluster.

Flatus,

Since we are having some fun with this, the Scottish side of the equation with a widow, mother of 13 and her nine surviving children.  I’m always amazed that my great grandmother, Euphemia Hunter White was always smiling.  Not sure if any of our modern crew could hold up to what she took in stride.

In that portrait I sense more than a touch of melancholy. Too many thoughts with five loved-ones absent, or simply that the act of taking such an important picture is so serious an undertaking.

Is Trump an ‘adult’? Ben Sasse won’t say – POLITICO

https://apple.news/AuU7YsesoSKOtrcrsf0RTIQ

“Sasse’s formula for true adulthood is four main steps: overcome “peer culture,” or associating just with people of similar ages; work hard; limit consumption of television or other passive media in favor of producing art or music or anything else; travel widely to understand how various people understand the difference between what they need and what they want; and become literate by reading widely and deeply.”

Trump doesn’t meet this bar for adulthood.  Neither do I, but I’m not the prez.

It’s actually a fairly tame news day so far – well, except for the Kushner kerfuffle.  I am firmly of the belief that he was doing more than setting up a diplomatic back channel – my guess, and it IS a guess, is that he wsa also trying to make sure his business interests were protected.

I’m in the Corey Booker camp as well – present an alternative to trump, don’t try and out trump him.

It was the picture taken the last time they were all together in Scotland about 1920.  Eventually they all made it to the states and settled in California.  Again the handsome man in the middle in the back row is my grandfather.  Maggie who took over as family matriarch sits to her left.  Wonderful, generous  woman, but you didn’t argue with Maggie about anything… 🙂

Jamie,

Here is where the Norman side of my family set down roots and became English. It is our ancestral digs Holme Lacy until my first American relative, Thomas Skidmore (modern spelling) arrived in 1634. Despite being stationed over there, I had no real desire to go visit as the ties were so distant and unremarkable. We did go to Wales and visited the town of Corwen where my Grandmother, Jeannie Williams was raised. I believe I mentioned previously that she studied and worked under Florence Nightingale. The river Dee was down the hill from her very nice house.

more folks like this need to speak up on pulling Jared’s classified clearance privileges.

Franken told “CBS This Morning” on Tuesday that Kushner did not disclose many of his contacts with the Russians when getting his White House security clearance, something Franken believes is “against the law” and “very unusual.”

and from crooksandliars:

Rep. Ted Lieu told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that since Jared Kushner repeatedly lied on his security forms about having contact with the Russians, he should resign from the Trump administration.

With all the news swirling about Jared Kushner’s seeking secret meetings with the Russians before Trump took office, Rep. Ted Lieu joined CNN to discuss Kushner’s fate.

Wolf Blitzer asked, “Why do you believe there’s enough evidence for [Kushner] to resign?”

The California congressman coolly replied, “It’s very clear that Jared Kushner lied on his security clearance form. The white House does not deny he omitted multiple Russian meetings, now we know those meetings were significant.”

He continued, ” One dealt with a secret back channel to Russia. A second dealt with the head of a bank that was being sanctioned by the u.s. at the time. You don’t just forget about these meetings. Jared Kushner deliberately omitted those on his security clearance form. That’s a felony and it also puts in a compromised position.”

Holme Lacy is a very nice stately home.

For the most part our family were Ag Labs in Scotland with a few notables such as the Durward Branch (arrived with the Normans) one of whom was the Regent for a minor Scottish King and the Calderwoods who had a rather nice castle.  On the Howard side those who managed to keep their heads attached to their necks helped found Maryland while the poorer relatives hiked through the Cumberland Gap and kept Daniel Boone company in Kentucky.  They ended up major land owners in Tennessee raising livestock feed with a cartage business and an inn for wayfarers though I doubt Washington slept there.  Lost it all in the Civil War and high tailed it for Texas.

As it stands now, I have a hoard of relatives most of whom don’t know I exist on every continent except for Antarctica, but I should probably check the surnames of the scientists there at present.

“Right now, our party has about the same level of credibility as Donald Trump.      We claim to be fighting for middle- and working-class people, but it is obvious to all that our priorities lie first and foremost with the wealthy donors we rely on to fund our campaigns.      This reality has eroded our moral standing and impacts the way our party operates at every level.”
