jace, thank you for introducing us to fingal’s cave. Mendelsohn is magnificent. atlasobscura on fingal’s cave: Queen Victoria, Matthew Barney, Jules Verne, and Pink Floyd are not names you usually hear in the same sentence, but then the place that they all share is itself quite uncommon. Known as Fingal’s Cave, it bears a history and geology unlike any other cave in the world. At 72 feet tall and 270 feet deep, what makes this sea cave so visually astoundingly is the hexagonal columns of basalt, shaped in neat six-sided pillars, that make up its interior walls. The cave was a well-known wonder of the ancient Irish and Scottish Celtic people and was an important site in the legends. Known to the Celts as Uamh-Binn or “The Cave of Melody,” one Irish legend in particular explained the existence of the cave as well as that of the similar Giant’s Causeway in Ireland. As both are made of the same neat basalt columns, the legend holds that they were the end pieces of a bridge built by the Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill (a.k.a. Finn McCool), so he could make it to Scotland where he was to fight Benandonner, his gigantic rival. The legend, which connects the two structures, is in effect geologically correct. Both the Giant’s Causeway and Fingal’s Cave were indeed created by the same ancient lava flow, which may have, at one time formed a “bridge” between the two sites. Of course, this happened some 60 million years ago,… Read more »

wapo: Judge halts deportations as refugee ban causes worldwide furor
Judge Ann Donnelly of the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn granted a request from the American Civil Liberties Union to stop the deportations after determining that the risk of injury to those detained by being returned to their home countries necessitated the decision.
Minutes after the judge’s ruling in New York, another came in Alexandria when U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema issued a temporary restraining order to block for seven days the removal of any green-card holders being detained at Dulles International Airport. Brinkema’s action also ordered that lawyers have access to those held there because of the ban.
Several hours after the judicial rulings, the Department of Homeland Security said it would continue to implement Trump’s executive order. In a statement released early Sunday, the agency said “less than one percent” of international air travelers arriving Saturday in the U.S. were “inconvenienced” by the executive order.
[…]
While the statement said the administration “will comply with judicial orders,” the fate of travelers detained at U.S. airports was not immediately clear.

“Boston judges put temporary stop to Trump immigration order
In a rare middle-of-the night decision, two federal judges in Boston have temporarily halted President Trump’s executive order blocking immigrants from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the United States.
At 1:51 a.m. Sunday, Judge Allison Burroughs and Magistrate Judge Judith Dein imposed a seven-day restraining order against Trump’s executive order, clearing the way for lawful immigrants from the seven barred nations — Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, and Syria — to enter the US.”

Fingal’s Cave was magnificent. Hadn’t heard it in an age so thank you for the revisit.
Patd love the background story.
I nominate Justin Trudeau as the new Leader of the Democratic Party. Or at least as an example to the Democratic Party of what Leadership with Balls entails.
Interesting what, if anything, other than blah blah blah Pelosi, Schumer & Company Inc. will spew forth. Are they capable of putting themselves out? Seizing the moment? Or too programmed against risk? Tick … tick … tick … poof.
sjwny, so just what is it that nancy, chuck & co can do except make noise?
it will take others (like businesses who’ve been hurt financially by this recent stupidity) to sue both him personally and the gov’t and hit the potty (brit. slang for crazy, eccentric, crackers) despot where it hurts him most. not that the suits will get anywhere other than his attention.

The results of a loon in the Oval Office are deep and world impacting. The news coming out is Mr. Peebody and his #UnholyTrinity refused to run his latest dictate before legal consul thus forcing more attention to how amateurish they are. Mr. FH is learning there is a Constitution still alive in America. He may wish to do a Nixon, but with a lot of experience since that man left office in a hurry, we are prepared to ensure life here is not under a dictatorship.
Jace, thank you for the loveliness.
I counter with a hand of Kellyanne “Get used to it” Conway. Take a look at those nails. They look painful. Bitten. Not merely bitten, but gnawed by a rabid animal. No wonder she’s always in a foul mood.
patd,
“Leadership (Inc.)” could join the protests, get pepper sprayed, get arrested. I know, quit laughing at the image of those two getting down & dirty. They could, however, use their platforms to instruct party members ( & publicly state ) to not vote for confirmation of any outstanding Cabinet nominees offered by a mentally ill, racist President. The defeat of Sessions would be a positive step. Whose vision of America will prevail? This is hardball.

Malevolence Tempered by Incompetence: Trump’s Horrifying Executive Order on Refugees and Visas
Just catching up. Loved the picture of the Clintons at the recent charity fund raiser. As a couple they will do more good before breakfast than Trump will do in four years. American history makes reference to the “Great Depression” the “Great War” and every one automatically knows what is being talked about. We will soon have another great that will come to have a common understanding.

Just find it hard to have much sympathy for all the purveyors of the anti Hillary poison who now suddenly think that Trump might be dangerous or unstable or both.Their sudden embrace of schock and angst over Trump’s behavior leaves me cold to say the least. They have little or no standing to comment. Where is the big surprise
As Bink stated earlier, Trump told us every day in every way what he was going to do. Now he’s doing it, and it’s even worse than we imagined. I hope the non voters and the protest voters voted for a damn good cause, because as much as anybody, they damn sure own this train wreck.
mrddog, that explains why he looked so unsteady coming down air force one stairs the other day…. not at all “look ma, no hands” bouncy and confident as was a descending Obama.
here’s daily mail:
The obscure truth about THAT picture: Theresa May had to take hold of Donald Trump’s hand because ‘the US President has BATHMOPHOBIA’ – a fear of falling down steps and slopes!
[….]
Mr Trump has already publicly admitted to being a ‘germaphobe’ with a compulsive need for cleanliness.
The source said: ‘He hates heights where you can see the ground or sharp inclines even more than germs. He particularly dislikes staircases and his biggest nightmare of all is a dirty stair rail.’
They added that he did not have a problem at Trump Tower because ‘he is always in that gold elevator’. But even that is not without its risks for the tycoon: he reportedly will not press a ground-floor lift button because it is the most frequently touched and therefore riddled with germs.
Trump once said about handshakes: ‘One of the curses of American society is the simple act of shaking hands and the more successful and famous one becomes, the worse this terrible custom seems to get. I happen to be a clean-hands freak. I feel much better after I thoroughly wash my hands, which I do as much as possible.’
Narcissistic Personality Disorder DSM-5 301.81 (F60.81) This is a nice easy read. As someone who is not a shrink, but has enjoyed many sessions for PTSD, it should be read for what it is, a translation of DSM-5 301.81 (F60.81) into nearly plain English. A common finding in clinical practice, NPD frequently coexists with other psychiatric disorders. NPD is a relatively recent diagnostic category. Its origins stem from a great effort between psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists to recognize a cluster of predominantly difficult patients who could not be classified as psychotic, not typically neurotic and overall not responsive to conventional psycho therapeutic treatment options (Gildersleeve, 2012). The most important characteristics of NPD are grandiosity, seeking excessive admiration, and a lack of empathy (Ronningstam & Weinberg, 2013). These identifying features can result in a negative impact on an individual’s interpersonal affairs and life general. In most cases, on the exterior, these patients act with an air of right and control, dismissing others, and frequently showcasing condescending or denigrating attitudes. Nevertheless, internally, these patients battle with strong feelings of low self esteem issues and inadequacy. Even though the typical NPD patient may achieve great achievements, ultimately their functioning in society can be affected as these characteristics interfere with both personal and professional relationships. A large part of this is as result of the NPD patient being incapable of receiving disapproval or rebuff of any kind, in addition to the fact that the NPD patient typically exhibits lack of empathy and overall disrespect… Read more »

bbc: Trump puts Bannon on security council, dropping joint chiefs
President Donald Trump is reshuffling the US National Security Council (NSC), downgrading the military chiefs of staff and giving a regular seat to his chief strategist Steve Bannon.
Mr Bannon, formerly the head of the populist right-wing, Breitbart News website, will join high-level discussions about national security.
The order was signed on Saturday.
The director of national intelligence and the joint chiefs will attend when discussions pertain to their areas.
Under previous administrations, the director and joint chiefs attended all meetings of the NSC’s inner circle, the principals’ committee.
bb…back in December, Obama received a letter from psychiatrists regarding the loser of the popular vote…needing a test, perhaps? He does have the personality disorder, but professionals cannot diagnose him without some tests. He is a sicko in layman’s terms.

new York times: Christian Leaders Denounce Trump’s Plan to Favor Christian Immigrants …The executive order he signed on Friday gives preference to refugees who belong to a religious minority in their country, and have been persecuted for their religion. The president detailed his intentions during an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network on Friday, saying his administration is giving priority to Christians because they had suffered “more so” than others, “so we are going to help them.” Sign Up For the Morning Briefing Newsletter But if Mr. Trump had hoped for Christian leaders to break out in cheers, that is, for the most part, not what he has heard so far. A broad array of clergy members has strongly denounced Mr. Trump’s order as discriminatory, misguided and inhumane. Outrage has also come from some of the evangelical, Roman Catholic and mainstream Protestant leaders who represent the churches most active in trying to aid persecuted Christians. By giving preference to Christians over Muslims, religious leaders have said the executive order pits one faith against another. By barring any refugees from entering the United States for nearly four months, it leaves people to suffer longer in camps, and prevents families from reuniting. Also, many religious leaders have said that putting an indefinite freeze on refugees from Syria, and cutting the total number of refugees admitted this year by 60,000, shuts the door to those most in need. “We believe in assisting all, regardless of their religious beliefs,” said Bishop Joe S. Vásquez,… Read more »

I am no great fan of politics in the pulpit, generally I strongly resent it. Too many Falwells and Dobsons and the like. It becomes a purely partisan excersize masquerading as faith.
That said if menof faith and conscience choose to take on Trump’s policies on Sunday mornings, so be it. If the Trump voters sitting in the pews are offended even to the point of walking out so much the better.

Fine music indeed. Thank you.?
I should think that all national security issues pertain to Intelligence and the Joint Chiefs, particular considering the times in which we live. Of course these days we’re led by a bunch of fools, so I guess that’s my bad for even trying to apply a bit of logic and common sense here.
Hi Jace! Thanks for the welcome!

usuncut: Pope Francis: You cannot reject refugees and call yourself a Christian
“The sickness or, you can say the sin, that Jesus condemns most is hypocrisy, which is precisely what is happening when someone claims to be a Christian but does not live according to the teaching of Christ. You cannot be a Christian without living like a Christian,” he said.
“You cannot be a Christian without practicing the Beatitudes. You cannot be a Christian without doing what Jesus teaches us in Matthew 25,” a reference to what is known as the Parable of the Judgment or the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats.

“It’s hypocrisy to call yourself a Christian and chase away a refugee or someone seeking help, someone who is hungry or thirsty, toss out someone who is in need of my help,” said Pope Francis.

sjwny, here you go, not quite shouting in the streets and setting themselves on fire like you want…but it’s a start. politico: Schumer: Democrats will try to undo Trump ban Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer vowed Sunday that Democrats will push legislation to unravel President Donald Trump’s controversial executive order barring certain immigrants from predominantly Muslim nations that prompted mass confusion and chaos at airports nationwide. The New York Democrat, at one point crying through his remarks during a news conference here, called the executive order “mean-spirited and un-American” and argued that it “must be reversed immediately.” “Senate Democrats are gonna introduce legislation to overturn this and move it as quickly as we can,” Schumer said. “I, as your senator from New York, will claw, scrap and fight with every fiber of my being until these orders are overturned.” The Democrats’ bill is currently being drafted, a spokesman for Schumer said. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) is also preparing legislation to overturn Trump’s far-reaching executive order. A spokesman said it would force the Trump administration to abide by current immigration law that bans discrimination based on nationality or religion. The Trump order singles out seven Muslim-majority nations, leading critics to chastise it as a ban of those of the Islam faith. A Democratic-led push to dismantle one of Trump’s chief priorities — enacting stricter controls on who is allowed to enter the United States — is unlikely to gain much traction in the GOP-led Congress, particularly since Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) backs… Read more »

The body of Oleg Erovinkin, who was suspected of helping Christopher Steele, was discovered in his car. He was an aide of Igor Sechin – the ex-Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, who now heads up state-owned Rosneft oil. Mr Steele, the former British spy behind the Trump dossier, wrote in an intelligence report that he had a source close to Sechin. Now it’s suspected that Erovinkin, who’s been called a key liaison between Sechin and Vladimir Putin, was that source. Media reports suggest his death was a result of foul play and it’s been speculated that the Kremlin is to blame. In his report dated July 19, 2016, Mr Steele said his source revealed alleged links between Trump and Putin. Christo Grozev, an expert on Russia, said in his blog that he believed Erovinkin was Mr Steele’s source. He said: “Insiders have described Erovinkin to me as Sechin’s treasurer and the go-between between Putin and Sechin. “One thing that everyone seems to agree on – both in public and private sources – is that Erovinkin was Sechin’s closest associate.” Mr Grozev said Erovinkin was… Read more »

good quote in wapo article about democrats speaking up and going to protests
“We’ve got refugees who were vetted more than the Trump Cabinet was vetted,” said former labor secretary Thomas Perez.
and from same article
By Saturday night, many more elected Democrats were joining protests — and enabling them. After the Port Authority suspended the AirTrain that transports people from New York’s subway to JFK Airport, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D-N.Y.) reversed its decision. Sen. Robert P. Casey Jr. (D-Pa.) showed up at Philadelphia’s airport in a tuxedo, having left a formal event to help local elected officials negotiate with customs officers to see stranded immigrants and refugees.
At Dulles International Airport, Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) did the same — to little avail. At Boston’s Logan International Airport, Warren delivered a speech against Trump’s order that was amplified by the crowd, a “people’s microphone” that had been used by the Occupy Wall Street movement. And Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) joined marchers protesting Trump’s travel ban outside the White House on Sunday afternoon.

Bannon is a strange Leninist. A capitalist smear merchant who is expanding Breitbart (with Putin’s money?) into Europe so it can infect that area with mistrust of government and journalism. That’s what struck me about Inslee’s observation of the EO’s incompetence: that the Trump administration couldn’t manage a two-car funeral. Bannon’s aim is not to govern, least of all with competence. It’s to create chaos and distrust. Why would a smear merchant care about governing? He’s effectively the President until the GOP finds some patriotism in their rank ranks.
One thing: if the media Trump sees/reads would suggest Bannon is the real President, that might make Trump eject Bannon. If they would stop giving time and space to JellyAnne, that would help, too. She’s popular with the Trump nitwits. I’ve read comments on the Daily Mail that praise her “beauty.”
Tomorrow is FDR’s birthday. I will be celebrating and wishing that he were a White House poltergeist, just long enough to torment Trump.
Flatus, I read that Trump would not merit any grade of security clearance if he were not entitled to it as President. I would guess the same for Bannon?
Ddog, the Journal’s Editorial Board is against Trump. Can you have them address his Rasputin?
FDR was a fan of the grilled (or maybe toasted) cheese sandwich – will that be a part of the celebration and hot dogs too…served with a martini or an old fashion.
We may have a party here too
FDR’s Martini
Drink Type: Martini
Ingredients
1 oz. Gin
1/2 oz. Vermouth
1 tsp. Olive Brine
Instructions
Shake with cracked ice. Rub a lemon twist around the rim of a chilled martini glass and strain the mix into the glass. Garnish with an olive.
personally I would use less vermouth
KGC, we always have hot dogs to celebrate FDR, a nod to what he served King George VI and Queen Elizabeth when they visited Hyde Park in 1939. Toasted cheese sounds good, too. FDR liked to play bartender and made murderous martinis. I think I’ll stick to a Gin and tonic.
Wonder how future generations of Americans will celebrate Trump: knuckle sandwich?
Flatus, I don’t have the ear of the WSJ or NYT or WaPo. Maybe Mad magazine will put President Bannon on its cover.
Just as an aside, Churchill was no fan of FDR’s children’s hour martinis.Legend has it that he looked for the nearest potted plant upon first taste. But then Churchill was not really a martini guy.
Four years of Trump will set the table for an FDR style coalition. The question will be if there is anybody on the horizon who can send out the invitations.
