The US and Iran have agreed to strike a deal to end their conflict, with US President Donald Trump saying the Strait of Hormuz oil shipping channel would also reopen.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose country has been mediating, announced the deal on Sunday evening.
He said both sides had declared “the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon”, where Israel and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah have been fighting, although Israeli politicians criticised the deal.
Trump said he had ordered the immediate removal of a US naval blockade of Iranian ports and said the Strait of Hormuz would be opened when the initial agreement was signed in Switzerland on Friday.
“Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
In another post, he said the deal “will bring Peace and Security to the whole Region”.
Iran’s deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi confirmed the end of military operations in a phone call on Iranian state TV, which portrayed the framework deal as a victory for Iran.
Iran’s top military command, Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, said that Iranians, together with the country’s armed forces and Tehran’s proxies and allies in the region, had shown the US and Israel that they had “no option but to accept defeat and surrender”.
Israeli politicians pushed back on the deal on Monday.
Defence Minister Israel Katz said Israel opposed a withdrawal from the roughly 5% of Lebanese territory that it has occupied and pledged that if Iran attacked Israel due to events in Lebanon, it would strike “with full force”.
Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir wrote on X that “Trump’s agreement does not bind us” and vowed to dismantle Hezbollah.
Opposition figure Yair Golan said the deal had been “made over Israel’s head”.
Gharibabadi told Iranian state media that Qatari mediators held “nearly 14 to 15 hours of lengthy talks” in Tehran to reach the initial agreement.
The deal will extend a ceasefire agreed on 8 April for another 60 days, during which the two sides will sort out the details of a final deal.
Key past sticking points have included Iran’s nuclear enrichment and Western insistence that the country not possess a nuclear weapon, and Iran’s desire for comprehensive sanctions relief and access to tens of billions of dollars in frozen oil revenues.
US Vice-President JD Vance told Fox News on Sunday that Iran never possessing a nuclear weapon was “built into this agreement” and that the US will be able to verify compliance.
In a congratulatory joint statement, the leaders of the UK, France, Germany and Italy said Iran “must never acquire a nuclear weapon” and that they were “prepared to lift relevant sanctions in response to clear, verifiable steps by Iran on its nuclear programme”.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called the announcement “a hugely important step forward in ending the war, ensuring regional stability and re-opening the Strait of Hormuz”.
Trump also said that upon the signing of the deal on Friday, “oil will flow on both ends again for the Region, and the World” through the Strait of Hormuz.
The shipping channel, through which 20% of the world’s oil and natural gas travels, has been effectively closed by Iran since the war began on 28 February, driving up fuel prices worldwide.
The conflict started when Israel and the US launched strikes on Iran, killing the country’s supreme leader. Iran responded by firing missiles at Israel and targeting US bases and assets in Gulf countries.
Lebanon was pulled into the conflict days later, when Iran-backed group Hezbollah fired rockets from Lebanese territory at northern Israel.
Lebanon and Israel agreed to a ceasefire on 16 April. Within days, Israel had continued regular deadly air strikes, accusing Hezbollah of violations, and Hezbollah had returned to its attacks.
Israel has occupied around 5% of Lebanon’s territory and flattened entire villages with air strikes and demolitions.
Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to a previous ceasefire in 2024, although Israel had continued near-daily attacks on targets and people it says were linked to Hezbollah.

Precise terms remain unclear amid conflicting claims over when access to vital global shipping route will be restored
A framework peace deal between the US and Iran has been reached, Donald Trump and senior Iranian officials have said, bringing the 15-week conflict to a tentative end and offering hope of relief for the Middle East and the world economy.
The secretariat of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said war and military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, would end permanently from Monday night.
The precise terms of the deal remain unclear but in a statement posted to Truth Social on Sunday evening, the US president announced the opening of the strait of Hormuz as well as the removal of the US naval blockade. “Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!” he wrote.
Trump later clarified that reopening the strait would depend on the signing of an initial memorandum of understanding on Friday, which Pakistan, acting as mediator, said would take place in Geneva.
Leaked drafts suggest the memorandum will trigger an immediate 60-day period of intensive technical talks, during which the most contentious issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme, will be discussed. Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, confirmed that negotiators would seek to reach a broader agreement that would include sanctions relief for Iran.
News of the full reopening of the strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil and liquid gas pass, sent stock markets higher and oil prices lower on Monday morning. Iran had closed the waterway to most shipping in the early days of the conflict.
Trump will travel to the French Alps on Monday to meet the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the UK at a potentially acrimonious G7 summit. The US president and other senior officials have repeatedly accused European allies of failing to provide adequate support during the war. Several European leaders, in turn, have sharply criticised his decision-making throughout the conflict.
JD Vance, the US vice-president, is expected to attend the signing ceremony. The Iranian delegation is likely to include Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Iranian parliamentary speaker and lead negotiator, and Abbas Araghchi, the foreign minister.
Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan and a lead mediator during negotiations in recent months, announced the agreement on Sunday afternoon, saying both sides had declared “the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon”.
Israel has fiercely resisted Lebanon’s inclusion in the deal, where its forces have mounted a sweeping offensive and occupied a swath of land in the south. Trump called for restraint on Sunday after Israel launched fresh airstrikes on Beirut.
Israel braced for retaliatory Iranian missile strikes after its attack destroyed a building in the Lebanese capital’s southern suburbs, killing three and injuring six. Israeli military officials said the strike targeted senior Hezbollah commanders after the militant Islamist organisation, which has close ties to Tehran, launched three projectiles into northern Israel.
Reports suggested Trump made minor last-minute concessions after the Israeli strike, possibly over the timing of the lifting of the US naval blockade, to allow the deal to go ahead.
There has been no official response from Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces a tough battle for re-election this year. The Israeli prime minister must now explain to voters why so few of the objectives he outlined at the start of the conflict have been achieved.
Israeli officials are also likely to be disappointed that neither Iran’s support for regional militant movements, including Hezbollah, nor its ballistic missile armoury are reportedly on the agenda in negotiations over a final agreement.
The talks are likely to focus on Iran’s nuclear programme, with the US pressing Tehran to dilute its stockpiles of highly enriched uranium stockpiles and accept new restrictions and monitoring measures.
Experts have warned that it is unlikely that a comprehensive agreement on such complex, technical issues will be reached with such a short timeframe, making it likely that negotiations will drag on.
Iran, meanwhile, is keen to secure sanctions relief for Iran and the release of billions of dollars in frozen assets. The US blockade has further damaged the country’s crisis-hit economy, making relief imperative for Iranian policymakers. Inflation has soared and there are shortages of some basic goods.
Other issues could also pose challenges, including disagreements over Iran’s demand to charge de facto tolls – potentially disguised as service fees – on shipping through the strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Mehr state news agency reported that the memorandum of understanding called for the reopening of the strait within 30 days under “Iranian arrangements”.
The US has long maintained that any tolling arrangements on international shipping – such as those reportedly discussed with Oman – would be unacceptable.
There has also been opposition to the deal in Iran and the US, including from hardline factions linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, whose influence has grown during the conflict.
While the war has become a political liability for Trump, with polls showing Americans deeply frustrated by rising fuel prices in the run-up to midterm elections in November, some Republicans favour a tougher approach.
The Republican senator Lindsey Graham, a leading Iran hawk, welcomed the deal but said he would be “watching closely” the negotiations on the nuclear programme. “Under our law, any nuclear deal with Iran will be sent to Congress for review and a vote,” he said.
Trump has told the New York Times that if Tehran fails to reach a nuclear deal, it could face renewed military action.
Iran has long maintained that its nuclear programme is peaceful and has not publicly committed to giving up the highly enriched uranium, which is believed to be buried beneath three nuclear sites heavily damaged by US strikes last year.
Trump withdrew the US from the 2015 multilateral agreement negotiated by Barack Obama, which lifted sanctions on Tehran in exchange for limits on its nuclear programme, including international inspections.
In a joint statement, the UK, Germany, France and Italy said they were prepared to lift sanctions on Iran in response to “clear, verifiable steps” to limit its nuclear programme.
Before the deal was announced, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that, under the terms of the draft, the US would agree to release $25bn in frozen Iranian assets. The Trump administration has previously said any release of Iranian funds would occur only after Iran had met specific conditions under a peace deal.
Thousands of people have been killed in the conflict, most of them in Iran and Lebanon, since US and Israeli forces first attacked Iran on 28 February. Iran retaliated with attacks on Israel and Gulf states hosting US bases, targeting military and civilian infrastructure.

You probably missed celebrating the Declaration or Arbroath dated April 6, 1320. The historic letter was drafted at Arbroath Abbey by Scottish nobles and sent to Pope John XXII. It asserted Scotland’s status as an independent, sovereign state and argued for Robert the Bruce’s right to the throne.

Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., on Thursday dropped his co-sponsorship of the Save Our Bacon (SOB) Act, which would negate Proposition 12, the California law mandating that pork sold in the state must be raised under certain conditions.
*Wow, so somebody spent money to say Marshall was against it, not that he had gotten a lot of blowback (including from me) and had dropped his co-sponsorship.
Marshall’s decision thrilled opponents of the bill, while a pork producer said it is “particularly frustrating.”
“Sen. Marshall has aligned himself with Chairman Boozman in recognizing that there is broad Democrat and Republican opposition to the Save Our Bacon (SOB) Act, and that if there’s a pathway to complete work on a farm bill, it must omit the provisions to repeal state farm animal welfare laws,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy.
Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, is the primary sponsor of the bill, and there are still seven cosponsors. Boozman has said his draft farm bill will not include the SOB Act because his priority is to write a bill that can garner 60 votes in the Senate.

Sometimes you have to research comments you hear in the media. I have been telling people there’s a major reconstruction of the reflecting pool again this fall that information is false.
No — there’s no public schedule for another drain-and-foundation job in October 2026. The big leak-fix you’re thinking of already happened this spring, and officials say it’s finished.
## What just happened (April–June 2026)
– **Drained in April.** Crews emptied the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool’s 6.75 million gallons after President Trump announced the project April 23. USA Today reporters on May 13 saw it “barren, drained… as crews work to waterproof the pool’s bottom, fix leaks and repaint it”.
– **Work scope:** sandblasting, caulking, repairing joints, installing lining material, and repainting the concrete bottom what Trump called “American Flag Blue”. The National Park Service notice described it as “Reflecting Pool Lining and Repair… to clean the pool, repair joints, and install lining material”.
– **Leak prevention was the point.** Atlantic Industrial Coatings got a no-bid contract “to fix leaks from the dozens of joints in the Reflecting Pool and waterproof the pool’s concrete bottom”. An Interior Department spokesperson called it a “leak prevention coating project”.
– **Refilled early June.** Water began flowing back June 4, 2026, “weeks after crews began work there, including the controversial repainting”, and Wikipedia notes “by June 5, the resurfacing work had been completed and the Reflecting Pool had begun to be refilled”.
– **Cost and timing:** originally pitched at $1.5 million, the price grew to $13.1 million (Interior Department, May 8), with news outlets reporting $13–20 million total. The rush was to have it ready for the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations in July 2026.
Trump himself declared the leak issue solved after the work: “It always leaked because it was done in stone… Now it’s done properly. It’s not going to leak at all”.
## What about the foundation?
The pool isn’t getting its foundation replaced this fall because that structural work was done more than a decade ago. During the 2009–2012 restoration — the $30.74 million rebuild — workers “began sinking the first of 2,133 wood pilings into a 40-foot-deep layer of soft, marshy river clay and some dredged material atop bedrock to support a new pool”. That project also replaced the original asphalt-and-tile bottom with concrete.
The 2026 job was surface-level: waterproofing and joint repair, not digging out pilings or pouring a new foundation.
## Bottom line for October 2026
I can’t find any National Park Service, Interior Department, or news filing that lists an October 2026 drain. The current plan was a one-time spring 2026 closure, and as of mid-June the pool is back in service (even with some early algae showing up again).
If you’re planning a trip to DC around October, the expectation — based on the recent work — is that the Reflecting Pool should be full and open, not drained for another major rebuild.

Dex, I read somewhere that the plumbing system for the LMRP leaked as well as the pool itself. I guess SFB’s approach to making things better than anyone else could is to slap a coat of paint or something akin to that over whatever it is he’s “fixing” rather than fixing what’s broken whether you can see it or not. Buddy of mine back in the mid 70s bought a Porsche 912 (poor man’s 911) that looked great. Beautiful silver body with black leather interior – I was envious. I went with him to pick it up and drove his car home to Tuscaloosa from Memphis (or was it Nashville? I digress), following him and watching it blow a puff of blue smoke with each shift of the gears. He took it to our trusted VW/Porsche mechanic when we got back, who checked it over and told him it was like a dogshit birthday cake – real pretty on the outside but nothing but shit under the frosting. He persuaded the guy he bought it from to take it back. Made some remark about fraud and the Court as I recall. I’ve used that term to describe a lot of stuff that was painted or papered over but not fixed as the years have gone by.

Also beans, dried peas. Good soy sauce. cheap asian greens. And the cheapest ginger anywhere. It is a large store.

Reed, the top Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, reiterated his longstanding criticism of Trump’s Iran policy on “Fox News Sunday,” arguing that the U.S. was now “in a much worse position” than under President Obama’s Iran nuclear deal, which Trump pulled out of during his first term.

Looks like it’s about the same but Iran has a lot more rubble, our guys killed a bunch of kids, Iran is being led by more extreme actors than before, and they get their money back.
