If you’ve noticed some weird delays, missing content, or errors when trying to interact with the site lately, I want to clear the air. It’s not your browser, and it’s not a ghost in the machine—it is entirely the fault of my current hosting provider, Network Solutions.
Here is a quick look behind the curtain at what is happening and how we are going to fix it.
The Corporate Shell Game
Network Solutions isn’t the independent, reliable tech company it was when I moved us here many years ago. Through a series of acquisitions over the last few years, it was swallowed up by a massive private equity-backed conglomerate called Newfold Digital (formed when investment firms like Clearlake Capital merged Web.com, Endurance International Group, and Network Solutions into one giant umbrella).
As is the playbook when private equity takes over web hosting, the focus immediately shifted from customer reliability to aggressive corporate cost-cutting.
The Oracle Cloud Migration Mess
To slash their overhead, Newfold Digital recently started migrating their network of brands over to Oracle Cloud infrastructure. For boutique, independent sites like Trailmix, this forced migration has been a complete disaster. We are currently dealing with:
- Broken Firewalls: Their new security architecture (specifically an OpenResty firewall block) is horribly misconfigured. It is actively intercepting my connection and blocking me from publishing new posts.
- Database Chokeholds: They are severely throttling background resources to cram as many sites onto their servers as possible. This is what causes the site to time out or throw errors when you try to leave a comment.
- Non-Existent Support: Because they’ve consolidated so many distinct brands into one massive pool, their outsourced technical support is stretched incredibly thin and unable to fix the underlying server architecture.
What Happens Next?
I refuse to let corporate penny-pinching ruin this community. Because Network Solutions can no longer provide a functional platform, I have decided to move Trailmix to a new, premium server company ASAP. I want to be completely upfront: migrating a website is never fun for any of us. Over the next week or two, there will likely be some brief downtime, weird visual glitches, or broken links while we pack up our digital boxes and move the database to a better neighborhood.

The Frontrunners: Premium Managed WordPress Hosts
These are the companies that actually specialize in WordPress. They don’t just rent you server space; they actively manage the backend, security, and updates.
1. Pressable (Annual Cost: $250)
Ownership Structure: Owned by Automattic. This is the massive, independent tech company that actually created and maintains WordPress itself (as well as WordPress.com, WooCommerce, and Tumblr).
The Reputation: The “Insider’s Choice.” Because they literally wrote the core WordPress code, their server architecture is custom-built from the ground up to run it perfectly. They are known for bulletproof reliability, zero traffic-overage fees, and incredibly deep technical support. If something breaks on a WordPress site, Automattic’s engineers usually know how to fix it faster than anyone else.
2. WP Engine (Annual cost: $780)
Ownership Structure: An independent giant, though heavily backed by major private equity firms (like Silver Lake). Unlike the conglomerate that bought Network Solutions, WP Engine’s investors are entirely focused on expanding their premium WordPress hosting dominance.
The Reputation: The “Industry Heavyweight.” They are arguably the most famous premium managed WordPress host on the market. They offer blistering fast speeds, top-tier security, and great developer tools. However, they are known to be quite rigid; they have strict lists of banned plugins, and they aggressively track your monthly visitor count, pushing you to higher pricing tiers if a post suddenly goes viral.
The “Do Not Touch” List (The Danger Zone)
1. The Newfold Digital Umbrella (The Current Problem)
Ownership Structure: A private equity-backed conglomerate (formerly known as EIG).
The Reputation: This is the company currently starving Trailmix of resources. They own Network Solutions, Web.com, Bluehost, HostGator, Domain.com, and dozens of others. They are notorious for buying up once-great independent hosts, laying off the support staff, and cramming too many websites onto cheap servers. If a host is owned by Newfold, run.
2. The GoDaddy Empire
Ownership Structure: A publicly traded mega-corporation.
The Reputation: They spend millions on Super Bowl ads, but their shared hosting environment suffers from the exact same corporate cost-cutting as Newfold Digital. They are notorious for aggressively up-selling basic features (like security certificates and backups) that premium hosts include for free. They own their flagship brand as well as Media Temple and Pagely (though Pagely remains strictly enterprise-level).

I’m just a dumb old country lawyer whose IT experience is as a user of apps on an iPhone and PC (OK, and Mac) but it sounds to me like the best option is the cheaper one. Not sure how they do that, but they did write the WP code. That and “bulletproof reliability, zero traffic-overage fees, and incredibly deep technical support” sounds like a pretty good combo.

Way back in the 90’s public ownership of websites became available. The first one I went to was Network Solutions. Actually, not the first or second, the first and second were small and not able to handle the traffic on my websites. They told me to find somewhere else to go and turned off my sites.
Currently I am sitting in Godaddy ($$$) servers. A few years ago I tried out Amazon Web Services (AWS). It was okay but at the time was not prepared for websites that were not gathering massive amounts of data. I own websites I could host my WP pages on, but I prefer to have someone else take care of all the background stuff needed to run WP.

Actually, we’re in the process of picking up a smarter legal search resource, so I’m having to compare costs and features of the big name guys (Westlaw-Thompson Reuters, Lexis-Nexis) with some up and comers (Fastcase, LOIS, LegalON, …). As you might expect, Ai is starting to figure into both the input and output sides of the search engines. Just starting the process. It’s pretty fascinating.

I ran into an interesting problem. I’m out of sinc with current housing fashions. I actually believe there are colors besides shades of gray.
The tile I’m laying down is 15 years out of date and has a red cast to it so I went looking for some red grout. No such thing any more at the big box home improvement stores. It is shades of beige or gray. Even the fancy tile place with their high prices couldn’t help.
But I do live in the modern world So I did an Amazone search and they have color additives that are for grout and concrete. in many shades and also bright primary colors so I can mix my own. God knows what my white trash heart will concoct but it should be interesting.

Just spitballing here, but IMHO, the “decoy plane” caper was just for show. One more distraction from tanking poll numbers from an incompetently managed war, green or empty reflecting pool (depending on the day), gilding statues and the oval office, ballrooms and helipads, cruelty and bad imaging from ICE and rising gas prices while crude is not at historic highs. Ever noticed that when gas prices rise Dumbass talks about crude prices, comparing them to speculative highs that were never reached? Anyone here ever buy crude oil? And while traffic through SOH is about 10% of what it was before the idiocy hit and Dumbass started war with Iran, Dumbass claims we control it and thinks he’ll keep it, then pivots to Steel Curtain blocking Iranian ship traffic. Oh, and posting Praise be to Allah. (that will certainly get chuckles from the idiots).

Here’s the part I feared looking at: In the 2022 gubernatorial election, those major metro areas only accounted for 40% of the statewide vote. Average of current polls show Talarico defeating Paxton in the urban areas, but the rural category breaks 56% Paxton, 35% Talarico.

Jack, I agree. This paradigm may be totally wrong, but I believe that the combination of Steven Miller’s evil, Hegseth’s warrior delusions and Trump’s declining mental capacity has set up a perfect storm of stupidity that really has no ceiling.

The key to polls is sampling, and if a statewide poll’s sampling doesn’t reflect the state demos and population distribution (and one that flips the rural and urban percentages manifestly does not), you might as well flip a coin and hope it lands on its edge, to say nothing of reflecting communication methods, and none of them seems to do that. I’d look at those Michigan polls and see what their sampling was like in the El-Sayed race. I can’t recall a miss that large.

As polling is big business there is no reason to believe that Texas polling is any better than Michigan polling and may be playing with your liberal minds.

Jack, the proliferation of bogus partisan pollsters has really undermined the whole industry. I’ve known many legit pollsters who take their science seriously, but their methodologies are getting more expensive, so fewer clients, especially media companies, are willing to pay for reliable data. Japanese Crown Prince Akishino, the younger brother of Emperor Naruhito, on Thursday said he has “mixed feelings” about the government’s revision to the Imperial House Law that reinforces a rule dictating only men can become emperor.

The comments by Akishino, the next in line for the throne, come just weeks after a historic revision to the Imperial House Law by the conservative government of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi that insists only paternal-lineage men can become emperor.
The law has been criticized as anachronistic and sexist, and the revision sparked outrage and concern that the measure could doom the already shrinking imperial family.
Critics say the government’s insistence on the male-only succession imposes an inhumane system on the royals without taking into consideration their perspective.
As an imperial family member who is not supposed to make political statements, Akishino was nuanced in his comments.

The revisions by Takaichi’s government to the antiquated law is meant to solidify the principle of the imperial bloodline, but pushes aside the emperor’s daughter.
The revision allows princesses to keep their status and perform royal duties if they marry a commoner, but their husbands and children will remain non-royals.
The revisions have led to protests from Japanese who see the government efforts as an attempt to eliminate Princess Aiko from ruling and justify discrimination against women and a patriarchal system.
A more controversial change allows unmarried male descendants aged 15 or older of very distant imperial male relatives to be adopted into the immediate royal family to father heirs. Only those of paternal lineage can be chosen for adoption.
The paternal-line male succession was stipulated for the first time in the 1890 Imperial House Law, when Japan promoted patriarchal systems. That law was largely carried over to the current 1947 version.
There is also worry that the government’s push will upset the legacy of former Emperor Akihito, including making amends for the victims of World War II, which was fought in his father’s name.
Akihito, who abdicated in 2019, tried to bring what was seen as an aloof monarchy closer to the people, an example followed by his son, Naruhito, and his family.

A small law firm with ties to the Trump administration declined a $150 million contract to represent migrant children who traveled alone to the U.S., authorities said Wednesday, while another group whose former chief executive was dogged by allegations of misconduct was awarded work worth up to $244 million to advocate for them.
The administration last week announced plans to award the contract to the Burke Law Group, a Houston-based firm with little experience in immigration. The contract offer came after the administration let a key contract expire with nearly 100 providers through Acacia Center for Justice.

Here’s a confirmed story of one actually going overboard: A sailor went overboard last month off of the USS Abraham Lincoln, a US official told CNN. The sailor was quickly rescued, according to the official, and was medically evaluated. The circumstances under which the sailor went overboard were not immediately clear nor whether the sailor returned to duty or was evacuated from the ship.

Two leading specialist military papers, the Navy Times and Stars and Stripes, are reporting that there have been multiple attempts by sailors to jump overboard as poor conditions and mental stresses on the Lincoln reach the breaking point.
Annabelle Loma told the outlet that her husband had tried to jump overboard after his spell at sea kept being extended.
“He’s scared. He thinks he’ll get a dishonorable discharge, and just because he was burnt out his 13-year career is ruined, just like that,” she said.
The paper quoted another sailor’s wife whose husband was involved in a separate incident onboard the Lincoln in which he prevented a fellow crew member from jumping, grabbing them and bringing them back on deck.
Worried families vented their anxieties about loved ones onboard the Lincoln at an emotional town hall meeting with navy leaders in San Diego last Thursday, Stars and Stripes reported. One spouse among the 200 or so family members said that her husband had texted her that day saying “he hopes he doesn’t wake up tomorrow”.
The Navy Times gave details of thwarted suicide attempts onboard the aircraft carrier during the current deployment.
In April, there was a flurry of public criticism about dire conditions onboard the carrier. Photos emerged of poor-quality and rationed food, and there were reports of water shortages, moldy showers and broken laundry machines.
Pete Hegseth, the defense secretary, dismissed the accounts as “more fake news”.

Both of those were bigger polling misses than in MI.
