First day possible I will cast it at drop box in county clerk’s office rather than mailing it back to be sure it gets there on time and counted.

    Exclusive: Over half a million voters registered in a single day last week

    At least 550,000 voters registered or updated their registration last week, according to final tallies the nonpartisan nonprofit National Voter Registration Day shared exclusively with Democracy Docket Tuesday.

    The Sept. 15 registration drive was National Voter Registration Dayā€™s second-most-successful midterm effort since the group began its annual nationwide registration drive in 2012 to encourage turnout, according to organizers.

    The announcement comes as President Donald Trump attempts to restrict voter registration initiatives across the country in the lead-up to midterm elections.

    Though presidential elections are typically the most popular time to register to vote, National Voter Registration Day campaign director Chyann Sapp told Democracy Docket voters understand politicsā€™ pressing influence.

    ā€œThey are seeing policy at a local level in everyday lives,ā€ Sapp said. ā€œThey are seeing policy show up at the gas station. Theyā€™re seeing it show up on their grocery bill. Theyā€™re seeing it show up in the quality of food. Theyā€™re seeing it show up, so they are asking themselves questions. They are challenging their elected officials.ā€

    National Voter Registration Day worked with community partners to host over 3,500 events, amplified by celebrities such as Sabrina Carpenter and Kerry Washington, and sports teams like the Philadelphia 76ers and Chicago Bears.

    ā€œYou canā€™t get in the game if you arenā€™t on the roster,ā€ the National Basketball Association wrote in an Instagram post.

    Voter registration efforts face mounting pressure from state and federal Republican officials.

    In June, the FBI raided the offices of the Ohio Organizing Collaborative, a Democratic-aligned group that helps register voters, based on unsubstantiated allegations of voter fraud.

    The failed SAVE America Act, meanwhile, proposed exacting ID requirements that would have hampered, or completely eliminated, registration drives.

    At the state level, many legislatures have advanced versions of the SAVE America Act that require voters to provide citizenship verification, such as U.S. passports, to register.

    ā€œAlthough the Save Act didnā€™t pass at the federal level, we still have to prepare for some of the challenges that a few of these states are still enforcing, and just make sure that our voters are still educated and local partners have that information,ā€ Sapp said.

    Local partners are the cornerstone of National Voter Registration Day, according to Sapp.

    ā€œA lot of nonprofits have been faced with legal challenges as well as funding challenges this year,ā€ Sapp said. ā€œThey still knew the importance of showing up in their communities as the trusted voices and bringing these resources. So itā€™s just wonderful to see that they have doubled down on it, they have stayed committed.ā€

    Since 2012, National Voter Registration Day has helped 7 million U.S. citizens register to vote or update their registrations.

    ā€œThe momentum is definitely clear, and that uptick still remains strong,ā€ Sapp said.

    Third-party voter registration drives have existed since the 1800s and remain a pillar of U.S. democracy. Nonprofits often partner with community leaders, colleges and unions to make registering to vote more accessible.

    In most states, citizens still have time to register before the election, though some cut off as early as Oct. 4, 30 days before Election Day.

    ā€œThis is just the beginning of the momentum and the election cycle,ā€ Sapp said. ā€œSo next up, everyone should be getting vote-ready, educated and then making a plan to not only get out to the polls for yourself, but for your community and friends as well.ā€

    Barring Congressional intervention, Social Securityā€™s retirement trust fund will be exhausted in 2032, forcing a benefit cut of as much as 24%.

    Social Security provides benefits to more than 70 million retired workers and people with disabilities.

We need to raise the cap, or like Jamie said, re-start Social Security at a higher point; maybe it continues to stop at $184k and restarts at $400k so that the very rich (including billionaires) have to pay.

    The bulk of the money for Social Security is funded through dedicated payroll taxes and taxes on benefits. Any shortfall is covered by its existing trust funds.

    For the past 16 years, Social Security has paid out more than it has taken in, forcing it to dip into fund reserves to pay benefits. By law, it canā€™t pay out more in benefits than it receives in revenue, so once the trust fund is gone, cuts will follow.

    *This seems odd, with the excess deaths and shorter life expectancies in 2020 and beyond. However, kidnapping & deporting folks who pay in through an ITIN but who never collect just made it much worse.

    The latest projections from the Social Security Board of Trustees show that the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fundā€™s reserves are projected to run out in the fourth quarter of 2032. After that point, Social Security would only be able to pay 76% of promised benefits.

    According to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, average monthly benefit cuts would surpass $500 in 29 states, with the largest cuts impacting retirees in Connecticut, Delaware and Maryland.

  22. In addition we need a wealth tax of some sort. The ultra rich do not get the majority of their income from salaries so they pay much less into SS as a percentage of their income. Various proposals are in the pipeline for consideration:

    Republicans may have gerrymandered their way into a Texas-sized Latino problem

    Many are no longer convinced the Republican Party is looking out for people like ā€Œthem. Frustration over economic pressures and Trump’s immigration agenda is rising, exposing cracks in what Republican officials hoped was a durable political realignment among Latino Americans. Trump’s approval rating nationwide has fallen to 32%, the lowest since returning to office, according to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll.

    That uncertainty poses a problem for Texas Republicans, who redrew congressional maps last year betting the Latino ā€‹contingent who helped power Trump’s 2024 win would remain in their column.

    In District 15, Latinos account for 74.5% of the citizen voting-age population. In District 35, they make up 51.6%, according to the state’s redistricting analysis.

    Polling suggests many Latinos are souring on Republicans. A September poll of 1,000 Latinos in Texas conducted for Cook Political and TelevisaUnivision found that 18% of Latinos who voted for Trump no longer support him, and almost two-thirds of Latino voters would be less likely to vote for candidates who support Trump’s immigration policies.

    And What Happens When His Lawyers Stop Being Careful

    As CNN, MS NOW and Politico challenge Trumpā€™s White House ban in court today, his lawyers have deployed a familiar dodge:
    ā€œThe president has found thatā€¦ā€

    Found what? That these news organizations threatened national security by reporting information Trump did not want reported.

    But the filing does not establish that their journalism endangered anyone. It presents Trumpā€™s accusation as a presidential ā€œfinding,ā€ then asks Judge Timothy Kelly to defer to it.

    That matters because Trump originally justified the ban by railing against negative coverage and ā€œfake newsā€ā€”not by identifying any national-security emergency.

    Trumpā€™s lawyers choose these verbs carefully. Many learned the hard way.

    Alina Habba and Trump were held liable for neatly $1 million over their frivolous Hillary Clinton lawsuit. Sidney Powell and other election lawyers were sanctioned, or even prosecuted. Rudy Giuliani was disbarred after making false claims.in Trump’s behalf.

    • Rudy Giuliani was disbarred in New York and Washington, D.C., after disciplinary findings involving false claims about the 2020 election.
    • Sidney Powell and six other lawyers were ordered to pay more than $175,000 over their Michigan election lawsuit and referred to their state bars. The Supreme Court declined to disturb those sanctions.

    But it does not automatically shield the lawyers from sanctions. Rule 11 still requires factual contentions in court filings to have evidentiary support after reasonable inquiry. Lawyers cannot launder a knowingly false claim merely by attributing it to their client.

    There is a historic television blackout today for President Trump’s tarmac greeting of Chinese President Xi Jinping at Joint Base Andrews. If you are looking for live video on traditional television, you won’t find it.

    Who is NOT providing live coverage

    • The Major Networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News, and CNN are all withholding live video coverage of today’s events.
    • The Reason: The networks suspended their White House TV pool coverage in solidarity after the Trump administration abruptly banned journalists from CNN, MS Now, and Politico from the White House grounds over the weekend. The banned outlets have since filed a federal lawsuit against the administration to restore their press passes.

    Who IS providing live coverage

    • Right Side Broadcasting Network (RSBN): The conservative media outlet is providing a live stream of the grand arrival ceremony and official honors on YouTube and its own platforms.
    • Independent and International Streamers: Digital outlets on YouTube, including Agenda-Free TV, MAGNO NEWS, and India’s NDTV Profit, are carrying live broadcasts of the arrival.
    • The White House: With the traditional press pool absent, the administration is relying on its own internal livestream to broadcast the events to the public, though a recent in-house broadcast struggled with audio issues.

  62. Several funny and weird things from today. Tommy (I live in Florida) tie for stupidest human in the world, declaring flight crews are “furries”. I am sorry to say I have never seen one in a plushy suit. Stupid greets and grovels on the shoes of a Communist (dictator) while wearing leather gloves. Temperature regulation is a problem for the elderly and apparently pedo.

    I made Buffalo Wings. Love them, which is why I have them twice a year. The air fryer is the second best, first is a deep fat fryer.

    I heard the air fryer completion tones. I like my hearing aids more and more.

  63. BB – I went to the grocery store today, and I heard the cashier instead of everything else going on I the store. The AC kicks on and I can still hear the TV without turning it up. The ambient noise suppression on these things is, so far, the best thing about them. Glad youā€™re liking yours.

  66. bId – the technology in these little devices is great. Mine reduce tinnitus so it is no longer a big problem. I can tell when one of the ear inserts falls out by the big jump in noise. A week with mine and I am living again.

  73. Yep, there was a bombardment of ads for eyelash mites this summer. A huge advertising budget for something Iā€™ve never heard of.

    Thereā€™s a YouTube playlist (749 of them) called ā€œdrug commercials with horrible side effects.ā€

    My cousin took Wegovy, and got one of the side effects; lump in the neck. They had to have their thyroid removed.
