Trump has not beaten the First Amendment, though he tries every day

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution is composed of 45 words, and those 45 words are the strongest bulwark against tyranny in this country.
They promise all Americans the right to worship (or not worship) as they choose, the right to speak freely without fear of punishment, to publish and report the news without interference, to protest peacefully and to petition the government for “redress of grievances.”
Those rights are the core of the free lives we deserve to live, but the First Amendment’s promise is not necessarily a guarantee, because someone in power always tries to break the promise when it interferes with their goals and plans.
There are endless examples of the Trump administration being especially intent on breaking the promise.
In recent days, Trump’s minions at the FCC threatened ABC and the network’s late night host, Jimmy Kimmel, with sanctions if he aired his interview with James Talarico, the Democrat running for the U.S. Senate seat in Texas, even though politicians are frequent guests on TV talk shows (including Donald Trump who has been in Kimmel’s show twice).
Kimmel chose not to air the interview on ABC, but made an end run around the FCC by putting the Talarico interview on YouTube.
This week, a judge ruled that the First Amendment rights of a New York man were violated when ICE agents came to his home in Rochester after he had written a scathing email to the acting director of ICE.
In August, a federal judge in California ruled that the Trump administration cannot deport students simply because they publicly criticized Israel.
The Pentagon is being sued by a publisher, an editor and a reporter for Stars and Stripes, the military newspaper. The three were fired because they resisted the attempts of Secretary of “War” Pete Hegseth to censor their coverage, a clear violation of the First Amendment.
Trump has repeatedly sought to punish reporters, news outlets and commentators for expressing opinions or breaking news stories that he does not like. Last month, he threatened to bring a $5 billion defamation lawsuit against the Center for American Progress merely for publishing a report that concluded his deployment of the National Guard to various American cities has had negligible effect on reducing violent crime.
Sometimes a news organization or a think tank buckles under fire, but, when they resist, they almost invariably win because even conservative judges can read the 45 words of the First Amendment.
Those 45 words are a promise that must be claimed over and over again, especially when faced with a government run by a president who does not know, or does not care, what the words mean.

White House promoted its own ‘Trump TV’ feed online after ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC decline to participate
The major US television news outlets agreed to suspend their video coverage of Donald Trump after the administration banned journalists from several outlets from entering the White House grounds.
The collective decision came after the barred outlets – CNN, MS Now and Politico – sued the administration on Monday, saying the president’s actions were a violation of their first amendment rights.
The ban was an extraordinary escalation of Trump’s battle against news outlets. After a coalition of networks including ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC – which along with CNN form a press “pool” that share the responsibilities of capturing and distributing footage of the president carried by news outlets worldwide – announced they would cease coverage in solidarity with the barred outlets, the White House promoted its own feed online, branding it “Trump TV”. The channel purported to show “top past moments, announcements, and the latest and greatest from the administration all in one place”.
“Get real-time updates and live events streamed DIRECTLY to your phone,” the White House posted on social media. “No noise. Just the news that matters most – straight from the Trump Administration.”
It is extremely rare for a president to travel or make public appearances without the accompaniment of a representative from the White House television pool. Network cameras have provided coverage of the president since 1950.
On Monday, the ban against CNN meant that no broadcaster was covering Trump’s midday ribbon-cutting to unveil a new White House helipad. Although the White House provided a livestream, without professional boom mics and audio setup, the president’s remarks were inaudible over the sounds of a helicopter’s engine running in the background.
The president abruptly announced his ban against outlets this weekend in a Truth Social post, saying he had enough of “purposely negative stories” about him. Journalists had their press badges confiscated by Secret Service on Saturday.
“Effective today, the TV pool will not be covering events designated as pool coverage of the President,” Bryan Boughton, Fox News’s Washington bureau chief who is also currently serving on as TV pool chair, wrote in an email to pool members Monday. The role is rotated each quarter. “This follows the White House’s position preventing CNN from fulfilling its assigned pool duties,” said Boughton.
In a show of support with the banned outlets, several outlets, including the Washington Post, the New York Times and the Associated Press, said they would not publish or distribute images taken as part of the White House photography pool including Trump’s departure on Marine One and his events at the United Nations in New York, until midnight ET. In a statement, the Washington Post described the action as part of a “collective effort”.
The five news networks, including CNN, wrote in a joint statement: “The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government. No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.”
Although the broadcast networks said they would withhold televised coverage, the print, radio and wire service press pool continues to provide reports detailing Trump’s movements throughout the day.
Hours after the broadcast networks’ announcement, the Washington Post said it would also withhold its photographs of presidential events from being published until after midnight ET to support banned outlets.
On Friday, Trump abruptly announced he was banning CNN, Politico and MS Now from the White House because, he believes, they “constantly write or report FICTION and LIES”. On Saturday, reporters and other staff from the news organizations were denied access to the White House.
Other media outlets and first amendment advocacy groups responded by condemning Trump’s ban, calling it an infringement on the right to a free press.
On Monday, CNN, Politico and MS Now filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, asking a federal judge to temporarily block the enforcement of the ban and restore the reporters’ passes to the White House.
On Truth Social, Trump defended his decisions, insisting that his ban was not “instituting an assault on the Free Press”, but instead addressing “national security” threats – a claim the US president has recently used to justify building a triumphal arch and the White House ballroom.

The White House has launched its own round-the-clock video channel, dubbed “Trump TV: The Essentials Station,” just days after President Donald Trump barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House.
The new service launched Monday at 7 p.m. ET, according to the White House, which has promoted it as a way to watch the Trump administration’s “biggest moments all in one place.”
It’s first piece of streamed footage featured a 2-month-old speech that Trump made at Mount Rushmore, on July 3 this year.
Kaelan Dorr, deputy assistant to the president, described the channel on X as a “livestream of the Administration’s greatest hits, unfiltered.”
The launch comes as Trump’s escalating dispute with the news media has disrupted the traditional television pool that provides shared video coverage of the president’s movements. On Monday, CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed a federal lawsuit against the White House challenging their exclusion, arguing that the administration violated their First Amendment rights by removing their access because of their reporting.
Hours later, the television pool announced that it would suspend coverage of presidential events rather than replace CNN for its scheduled pool assignments. The pool normally rotates coverage among ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC, with the footage distributed to other news organizations.
Critics Slam Channel as ‘State-Run TV’
The announcement quickly drew backlash from critics who described the service as state-run or state-controlled media, drawing comparisons with the tightly controlled media systems of China and Russia.
Breck Worsham, a prominent right-wing social media personality and former Trump supporter who has since become a critic, wrote on X: “Trump is literally getting ready to launch a state run media called Trump TV. Didn’t another dictator have a state run media or was I imagining that?”
Aquilino Gonell, a former U.S. Capitol Police sergeant who defended the Capitol during the January 6 attack, described Trump TV as “official state-run media” in a post on X.
“But look over there…the communist,” he added, sarcastically referencing the administration’s decision to brand Democrat Socialists as “communists.” “Literally shredding the constitution.”
Philip Lewis, deputy editor of HuffPost, similarly described the planned channel as the White House’s own “state-run propaganda network,” writing: “Amid Trump’s ban on three media outlets, the White House is now touting its own state-run propaganda network: ‘TRUMP TV.’”
Political commentator Ed Krassenstein also wrote that the White House was preparing to launch “TRUMP TV,” referring to it as “official state-run media..”
State-controlled media generally refers to outlets whose ownership, funding or editorial operations are subject to direct government control or influence. In more authoritarian political systems, such outlets can serve as official channels for government messaging, while independent media face significant restrictions.
China, for example, has major state-owned outlets including China Central Television (CCTV) and Xinhua, which are directly controlled by authorities. Russia similarly operates a media environment in which the government exercises extensive control over television and other major news outlets.
What Is Trump TV?
The White House describes the new service as “Trump TV: The Essentials Station.” Its livestream page says it will provide administration videos, major presidential remarks and other highlights, with content streamed and updated in real time.
The White House had teased the launch on social media throughout Monday, including videos hinting that something new was coming.
The service is part of a broader effort by the administration to communicate directly with the public through its own platforms, bypassing traditional news organizations.
Why Is the White House Launching It Now?
The launch coincides with an extraordinary breakdown in the White House’s relationship with the television press pool.
Trump announced Friday that CNN, MS NOW and Politico were being barred from the White House, citing what he called unfavorable and “fake” coverage. Reporters from the three organizations were subsequently denied access to the White House grounds.
The dispute escalated Monday when CNN was scheduled to provide the television pool coverage for Trump’s trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. Rather than replace CNN, the remaining networks announced that they would suspend pool coverage of presidential events.
That meant there was no traditional network television pool camera covering Trump’s departure for New York.
In a Truth Social post on Monday, Trump defended his decision, calling “Fake News” a “threat to democracy” and vowing to go to appeal.
“Fake News people and publications that only write negatively, and who violate our National Security by writing false and defamatory stories with unknown ‘sources,’ shouldn’t be allowed access to the most important Office anywhere in the World,” he wrote.
Trump also criticized U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly, a Trump appointee, who has been assigned to the case because he previously ruled in CNN’s Jim Acosta’s favor during a previous ban.
What Happened at the White House Helipad?
The consequences were visible Monday afternoon when Trump held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new helipad on the White House South Lawn.
With the television pool suspended, the White House relied on its own video feed. Trump spoke for several minutes, but his remarks were difficult to hear over the noise of Marine One’s engines.
The White House’s livestream nevertheless provided footage of the event, illustrating how the administration’s own video operation could fill some of the gap created by the absence of the traditional television pool.
How Does This Relate to the Media Ban?
The timing has made the new service part of the broader dispute over whether the White House can control which news organizations receive access to the president.
The administration argues that the First Amendment protects the media’s right to publish but does not give individual organizations an automatic right to White House credentials, briefing-room seats or participation in the press pool. The White House said Monday that Trump’s decision followed what it characterized as “years of false reporting.”
CNN, MS NOW and Politico argue that the ban is unconstitutional because the administration excluded them in response to their reporting. Their lawsuit asks a federal court to restore their access while the legal challenge proceeds.
The launch of Trump TV does not itself resolve that legal dispute. Instead, it gives the administration another direct channel through which it can distribute video of the president and his administration while the fight over traditional press access moves through the courts.
How Have Lawmakers Reacted?
Representative Robert Garcia, ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, asked the White House for answers about its decision to bar reporters from CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House.
The California Democrat wrote a letter Monday to White House Communications Director Steven Cheung with a list of questions Monday, saying, “Oversight Democrats are investigating President Trump’s latest, and most blatant, assault on press freedom.”
Garcia requested information by October 5, including details on how and when Cheung learned of the possible ban, who was consulted, and the White House’s legal and factual basis for denying access.
“It is shockingly hypocritical that a White House that describes President Trump ‘the most transparent and accessible president in American history’ would hide the President from reporters and make the President inaccessible to representatives from three major media outlets and all readers of their news coverage,” Garcia wrote in the letter.
Former GOP Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene shared a video of Trump speaking at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the White House’s new helipad Monday, where his remarks were largely inaudible because the television press pool was not present.
“Crazy how when you violate the 1st amendment, free speech, it backfires on you and now no one can hear your speech!” Greene, a former Trump loyalist, wrote on X. “Supporting free speech means supporting speech, even speech you don’t like.”
Representative Thomas Massie responded to Trump’s Monday post, in which the president said the White House was not “instituting an assault on the Free Press,” but rather on “FAKE NEWS.”
“If the “news” reports that everyone will get $5,000 checks if Republicans win the midterms, does that make them ‘fake news?’” the Kentucky Republican wrote on X. “If it is real news, does it mean Republicans are running ‘against socialism’ or ‘for socialism?’”
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise defended Trump’s ban on the news outlets during an interview on ABC’s This Week.
“Go look at Joe Biden. Joe Biden removed the press credentials from over 400 different agencies,” the Louisiana Republican said.
When asked if he supports the ban or if it violates the First Amendment, Scalise answered: “Well, I don’t know why he did it. I don’t know what the background is.”
Senator Mark Kelly, an Arizona Democrat, criticized several actions by the Trump administration, calling them “not normal.”
“State run media, state owned enterprises, prosecuting political opponents, gifts from foreign countries, selling pardons, massive amounts of money flowing into the President’s bank account, and banners with his head plastered on government buildings,” Kelly wrote on X. “NONE OF THIS IS NORMAL.”

Banning US diesel exports might be a tempting way for Trump to show he’s taking action to combat record-shattering diesel prices that are adding to surging costs for Americans.

A federal appeals court ruled Monday that Missouri must use a GOP-friendly congressional redistricting plan for November’s election but put that ruling on hold for a week so the Supreme Court could review the dispute.
The ruling from the US 8th Circuit Court of Appeals is the latest twist in a whiplash legal wrangling over the map of the state’s eight congressional districts, injecting another round of uncertainty, as it does not take effect immediately but rather sets up another round of appeals.
The Missouri Supreme Court previously said the 7-1 Republican-leaning map adopted by the legislature last year could not be used because of a referendum challenge brought against it under the state constitution. Instead, the court ordered election officials to use an older, 6-2 redistricting plan even though the 2025 plan had been used in the state’s primary. The US Supreme Court declined to reverse that ruling, and it then paused a federal judge’s ruling that sought to revive the 7-1 map.

The Democrat filed a police complaint against the Republican incumbent, saying state law bans deceptive video so close to the election. Patrick’s camp said they were obvious parodies.

Goodwin cited a 2019 Texas law banning the deepfake videos from being published or distributed within 30 days of an election. Trump has not beaten the First Amendment, though he tries every day

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution is composed of 45 words, and those 45 words are the strongest bulwark against tyranny in this country.
They promise all Americans the right to worship (or not worship) as they choose, the right to speak freely without fear of punishment, to publish and report the news without interference, to protest peacefully and to petition the government for “redress of grievances.”
Those rights are the core of the free lives we deserve to live, but the First Amendment’s promise is not necessarily a guarantee, because someone in power always tries to break the promise when it interferes with their goals and plans.
There are endless examples of the Trump administration being especially intent on breaking the promise.
In recent days, Trump’s minions at the FCC threatened ABC and the network’s late night host, Jimmy Kimmel, with sanctions if he aired his interview with James Talarico, the Democrat running for the U.S. Senate seat in Texas, even though politicians are frequent guests on TV talk shows (including Donald Trump who has been in Kimmel’s show twice).
Kimmel chose not to air the interview on ABC, but made an end run around the FCC by putting the Talarico interview on YouTube.
This week, a judge ruled that the First Amendment rights of a New York man were violated when ICE agents came to his home in Rochester after he had written a scathing email to the acting director of ICE.
In August, a federal judge in California ruled that the Trump administration cannot deport students simply because they publicly criticized Israel.
The Pentagon is being sued by a publisher, an editor and a reporter for Stars and Stripes, the military newspaper. The three were fired because they resisted the attempts of Secretary of “War” Pete Hegseth to censor their coverage, a clear violation of the First Amendment.
Trump has repeatedly sought to punish reporters, news outlets and commentators for expressing opinions or breaking news stories that he does not like. Last month, he threatened to bring a $5 billion defamation lawsuit against the Center for American Progress merely for publishing a report that concluded his deployment of the National Guard to various American cities has had negligible effect on reducing violent crime.
Sometimes a news organization or a think tank buckles under fire, but, when they resist, they almost invariably win because even conservative judges can read the 45 words of the First Amendment.
Those 45 words are a promise that must be claimed over and over again, especially when faced with a government run by a president who does not know, or does not care, what the words mean.

White House promoted its own ‘Trump TV’ feed online after ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC decline to participate
The major US television news outlets agreed to suspend their video coverage of Donald Trump after the administration banned journalists from several outlets from entering the White House grounds.
The collective decision came after the barred outlets – CNN, MS Now and Politico – sued the administration on Monday, saying the president’s actions were a violation of their first amendment rights.
The ban was an extraordinary escalation of Trump’s battle against news outlets. After a coalition of networks including ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC – which along with CNN form a press “pool” that share the responsibilities of capturing and distributing footage of the president carried by news outlets worldwide – announced they would cease coverage in solidarity with the barred outlets, the White House promoted its own feed online, branding it “Trump TV”. The channel purported to show “top past moments, announcements, and the latest and greatest from the administration all in one place”.
“Get real-time updates and live events streamed DIRECTLY to your phone,” the White House posted on social media. “No noise. Just the news that matters most – straight from the Trump Administration.”
It is extremely rare for a president to travel or make public appearances without the accompaniment of a representative from the White House television pool. Network cameras have provided coverage of the president since 1950.
On Monday, the ban against CNN meant that no broadcaster was covering Trump’s midday ribbon-cutting to unveil a new White House helipad. Although the White House provided a livestream, without professional boom mics and audio setup, the president’s remarks were inaudible over the sounds of a helicopter’s engine running in the background.
The president abruptly announced his ban against outlets this weekend in a Truth Social post, saying he had enough of “purposely negative stories” about him. Journalists had their press badges confiscated by Secret Service on Saturday.
“Effective today, the TV pool will not be covering events designated as pool coverage of the President,” Bryan Boughton, Fox News’s Washington bureau chief who is also currently serving on as TV pool chair, wrote in an email to pool members Monday. The role is rotated each quarter. “This follows the White House’s position preventing CNN from fulfilling its assigned pool duties,” said Boughton.
In a show of support with the banned outlets, several outlets, including the Washington Post, the New York Times and the Associated Press, said they would not publish or distribute images taken as part of the White House photography pool including Trump’s departure on Marine One and his events at the United Nations in New York, until midnight ET. In a statement, the Washington Post described the action as part of a “collective effort”.
The five news networks, including CNN, wrote in a joint statement: “The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government. No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.”
Although the broadcast networks said they would withhold televised coverage, the print, radio and wire service press pool continues to provide reports detailing Trump’s movements throughout the day.
Hours after the broadcast networks’ announcement, the Washington Post said it would also withhold its photographs of presidential events from being published until after midnight ET to support banned outlets.
On Friday, Trump abruptly announced he was banning CNN, Politico and MS Now from the White House because, he believes, they “constantly write or report FICTION and LIES”. On Saturday, reporters and other staff from the news organizations were denied access to the White House.
Other media outlets and first amendment advocacy groups responded by condemning Trump’s ban, calling it an infringement on the right to a free press.
On Monday, CNN, Politico and MS Now filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, asking a federal judge to temporarily block the enforcement of the ban and restore the reporters’ passes to the White House.
On Truth Social, Trump defended his decisions, insisting that his ban was not “instituting an assault on the Free Press”, but instead addressing “national security” threats – a claim the US president has recently used to justify building a triumphal arch and the White House ballroom.

The White House has launched its own round-the-clock video channel, dubbed “Trump TV: The Essentials Station,” just days after President Donald Trump barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House.
The new service launched Monday at 7 p.m. ET, according to the White House, which has promoted it as a way to watch the Trump administration’s “biggest moments all in one place.”
It’s first piece of streamed footage featured a 2-month-old speech that Trump made at Mount Rushmore, on July 3 this year.
Kaelan Dorr, deputy assistant to the president, described the channel on X as a “livestream of the Administration’s greatest hits, unfiltered.”
The launch comes as Trump’s escalating dispute with the news media has disrupted the traditional television pool that provides shared video coverage of the president’s movements. On Monday, CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed a federal lawsuit against the White House challenging their exclusion, arguing that the administration violated their First Amendment rights by removing their access because of their reporting.
Hours later, the television pool announced that it would suspend coverage of presidential events rather than replace CNN for its scheduled pool assignments. The pool normally rotates coverage among ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC, with the footage distributed to other news organizations.
Critics Slam Channel as ‘State-Run TV’
The announcement quickly drew backlash from critics who described the service as state-run or state-controlled media, drawing comparisons with the tightly controlled media systems of China and Russia.
Breck Worsham, a prominent right-wing social media personality and former Trump supporter who has since become a critic, wrote on X: “Trump is literally getting ready to launch a state run media called Trump TV. Didn’t another dictator have a state run media or was I imagining that?”
Aquilino Gonell, a former U.S. Capitol Police sergeant who defended the Capitol during the January 6 attack, described Trump TV as “official state-run media” in a post on X.
“But look over there…the communist,” he added, sarcastically referencing the administration’s decision to brand Democrat Socialists as “communists.” “Literally shredding the constitution.”
Philip Lewis, deputy editor of HuffPost, similarly described the planned channel as the White House’s own “state-run propaganda network,” writing: “Amid Trump’s ban on three media outlets, the White House is now touting its own state-run propaganda network: ‘TRUMP TV.’”
Political commentator Ed Krassenstein also wrote that the White House was preparing to launch “TRUMP TV,” referring to it as “official state-run media..”
State-controlled media generally refers to outlets whose ownership, funding or editorial operations are subject to direct government control or influence. In more authoritarian political systems, such outlets can serve as official channels for government messaging, while independent media face significant restrictions.
China, for example, has major state-owned outlets including China Central Television (CCTV) and Xinhua, which are directly controlled by authorities. Russia similarly operates a media environment in which the government exercises extensive control over television and other major news outlets.
What Is Trump TV?
The White House describes the new service as “Trump TV: The Essentials Station.” Its livestream page says it will provide administration videos, major presidential remarks and other highlights, with content streamed and updated in real time.
The White House had teased the launch on social media throughout Monday, including videos hinting that something new was coming.
The service is part of a broader effort by the administration to communicate directly with the public through its own platforms, bypassing traditional news organizations.
Why Is the White House Launching It Now?
The launch coincides with an extraordinary breakdown in the White House’s relationship with the television press pool.
Trump announced Friday that CNN, MS NOW and Politico were being barred from the White House, citing what he called unfavorable and “fake” coverage. Reporters from the three organizations were subsequently denied access to the White House grounds.
The dispute escalated Monday when CNN was scheduled to provide the television pool coverage for Trump’s trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. Rather than replace CNN, the remaining networks announced that they would suspend pool coverage of presidential events.
That meant there was no traditional network television pool camera covering Trump’s departure for New York.
In a Truth Social post on Monday, Trump defended his decision, calling “Fake News” a “threat to democracy” and vowing to go to appeal.
“Fake News people and publications that only write negatively, and who violate our National Security by writing false and defamatory stories with unknown ‘sources,’ shouldn’t be allowed access to the most important Office anywhere in the World,” he wrote.
Trump also criticized U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly, a Trump appointee, who has been assigned to the case because he previously ruled in CNN’s Jim Acosta’s favor during a previous ban.
What Happened at the White House Helipad?
The consequences were visible Monday afternoon when Trump held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new helipad on the White House South Lawn.
With the television pool suspended, the White House relied on its own video feed. Trump spoke for several minutes, but his remarks were difficult to hear over the noise of Marine One’s engines.
The White House’s livestream nevertheless provided footage of the event, illustrating how the administration’s own video operation could fill some of the gap created by the absence of the traditional television pool.
How Does This Relate to the Media Ban?
The timing has made the new service part of the broader dispute over whether the White House can control which news organizations receive access to the president.
The administration argues that the First Amendment protects the media’s right to publish but does not give individual organizations an automatic right to White House credentials, briefing-room seats or participation in the press pool. The White House said Monday that Trump’s decision followed what it characterized as “years of false reporting.”
CNN, MS NOW and Politico argue that the ban is unconstitutional because the administration excluded them in response to their reporting. Their lawsuit asks a federal court to restore their access while the legal challenge proceeds.
The launch of Trump TV does not itself resolve that legal dispute. Instead, it gives the administration another direct channel through which it can distribute video of the president and his administration while the fight over traditional press access moves through the courts.
How Have Lawmakers Reacted?
Representative Robert Garcia, ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, asked the White House for answers about its decision to bar reporters from CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House.
The California Democrat wrote a letter Monday to White House Communications Director Steven Cheung with a list of questions Monday, saying, “Oversight Democrats are investigating President Trump’s latest, and most blatant, assault on press freedom.”
Garcia requested information by October 5, including details on how and when Cheung learned of the possible ban, who was consulted, and the White House’s legal and factual basis for denying access.
“It is shockingly hypocritical that a White House that describes President Trump ‘the most transparent and accessible president in American history’ would hide the President from reporters and make the President inaccessible to representatives from three major media outlets and all readers of their news coverage,” Garcia wrote in the letter.
Former GOP Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene shared a video of Trump speaking at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the White House’s new helipad Monday, where his remarks were largely inaudible because the television press pool was not present.
“Crazy how when you violate the 1st amendment, free speech, it backfires on you and now no one can hear your speech!” Greene, a former Trump loyalist, wrote on X. “Supporting free speech means supporting speech, even speech you don’t like.”
Representative Thomas Massie responded to Trump’s Monday post, in which the president said the White House was not “instituting an assault on the Free Press,” but rather on “FAKE NEWS.”
“If the “news” reports that everyone will get $5,000 checks if Republicans win the midterms, does that make them ‘fake news?’” the Kentucky Republican wrote on X. “If it is real news, does it mean Republicans are running ‘against socialism’ or ‘for socialism?’”
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise defended Trump’s ban on the news outlets during an interview on ABC’s This Week.
“Go look at Joe Biden. Joe Biden removed the press credentials from over 400 different agencies,” the Louisiana Republican said.
When asked if he supports the ban or if it violates the First Amendment, Scalise answered: “Well, I don’t know why he did it. I don’t know what the background is.”
Senator Mark Kelly, an Arizona Democrat, criticized several actions by the Trump administration, calling them “not normal.”
“State run media, state owned enterprises, prosecuting political opponents, gifts from foreign countries, selling pardons, massive amounts of money flowing into the President’s bank account, and banners with his head plastered on government buildings,” Kelly wrote on X. “NONE OF THIS IS NORMAL.”

A federal appeals court ruled Monday that Missouri must use a GOP-friendly congressional redistricting plan for November’s election but put that ruling on hold for a week so the Supreme Court could review the dispute.
The ruling from the US 8th Circuit Court of Appeals is the latest twist in a whiplash legal wrangling over the map of the state’s eight congressional districts, injecting another round of uncertainty, as it does not take effect immediately but rather sets up another round of appeals.
The Missouri Supreme Court previously said the 7-1 Republican-leaning map adopted by the legislature last year could not be used because of a referendum challenge brought against it under the state constitution.
