WAPO Canada announces retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products as trade war deepens
On Sept. 8, Canada will double tariffs on American steel and aluminum and impose new levies on about 700 other products in retaliation for U.S. tariffs that took effect Saturday.

Canada struck back at the United States on Tuesday, announcing new tariffs of up to 50 percent on hundreds of American goods and deepening a trade war between the two longtime allies that has been simmering since President Donald Trump returned to the White House last year.
Beginning Sept. 8, Canada will double its tariffs on American steel and aluminum from 25 percent to 50 percent. And it will impose tariffs ranging from 15 percent to 50 percent on about 700 other products, including fish, milk and food products, plywood, plastics, aluminum foil, appliances, agricultural equipment, motorcycles and electronics.
The move — promised Saturday by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney — came in response to the imposition last week of 50 percent U.S. tariffs on about $20 billion in Canadian goods, including whisky, dairy products, toys, clothing and hockey sticks. After talks in Washington to avert those levies unexpectedly collapsed, Carney promised that Canada would retaliate “dollar for dollar.”
“You’re at war when you’re attacked, and we got attacked,” he told Canadians on Saturday. “We’re going to hit back.”
On Tuesday, Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne provided the details, saying the new “countertariffs are designed primarily to provide protection for Canadian industry impacted by U.S. tariffs and allow them to compete against U.S. products in the Canadian market.”
With two weeks until the tariffs take effect, the two sides have time to prevent a further escalation in economic hostilities. But it was unclear Tuesday whether any further meetings had been set.
In fact, Trump spent Tuesday morning targeting Canada in a series of social media posts. He complained that “Canada has been ‘Ripping Off’ the U.S.A. for decades.” He wrote that “I deal with many countries, and Canada is easily the most difficult and unreasonable. They feel entitled, but they are not a State, and will be entitled no longer!”
And he wrote that he is “giving serious consideration” to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America “in that we don’t expect to be doing much business with Ontario any longer.”
Trump was also posting about Canada on Monday, when he threatened a new round of higher tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, auto parts and steel to take effect Jan. 1.
The U.S. tariffs had applied to just 5 percent of the $382 billion in Canadian goods that the U.S. imported last year, and Canada’s retaliatory tariffs impact around 6 percent of the $333 billion in U.S. goods exported to Canada. But the two economies remain top trading partners.
“It’s going to be felt,” said Mary Lovely, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, especially in the targeted industries and states, which will likely put pressure on the Trump administration to strike a deal. “Canada is a good market for U.S. producers.”
The new trade war between the U.S. and Canada is a marked change from the long-standing close relationship between the North American allies, which annually exchange more than $700 billion in goods. Tensions between the Trump administration and Canadian officials have been simmering since Trump upended the country’s traditional trade relationships in an effort to reduce U.S. reliance on global imports and increase exports.
Trump officials have repeatedly expressed frustration that Canada has been the only nation besides China to retaliate for Trump’s tariffs. Carney has presented himself as one of the few world leaders willing to stand up to Trump’s demands, unlike other longtime U.S. partners. The European Union and Britain have both cut deals with the administration in the face of Trump’s tariff threats.
Last week, Carney told reporters that he would end trade negotiations with the Trump administration rather than accept a list of concessions. “We cannot accept what they offered, and we will not give what they’ve asked,” Carney said.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said in a call with reporters Friday that Canada rejected a deal that would have offered “the best treatment of any major exporter to our market.”
Both the U.S. and Canada are better off for the trade deal falling apart, said Charles Benoit, a trade attorney with the Coalition for a Prosperous America, because it would have forced them to give up protections for key industries in each country.
“The best way to think of tariffs is not country by country, but product by product. That’s the American tradition,” he said, citing the numerous tariff laws passed over nearly 150 years in the U.S. “It didn’t matter if the good was coming from Canada or China or whatever.”
While the U.S. tariffs that took effect early Saturday were not expected to have a significant effect on American consumers, U.S. farmers rely on Canadian suppliers for nearly 80 percent of the potash fertilizer they use each year. Northern border states such as New York, Michigan and Maine run on electricity produced by Canadian hydropower. And Midwestern refineries are optimized to process heavy sour crude oil from Canadian wells, which keeps U.S. gas prices lower than they otherwise would be.

Canada on Tuesday announced tariffs on roughly $20 billion of U.S. goods, days after the U.S. escalated trade tension by enacting new levies on $20 billion of Canadian goods. The acrimony follows the collapse of trade talks between the two nations, which have a nearly $900 billion-a-year trading relationship. Canada’s new tariffs are set to take effect Sept. 8.
Trade experts and economists said Canada’s levies would exert pressure on Republican candidates running in key races in the U.S. midterm elections. Here’s what they say about how the tariffs could affect the U.S. economy more broadly:
What is Canada tariffing?
Canada said it plans to impose tariffs of 15% to 50% on about $20 billion of U.S. imports. That equals roughly 7% of Canada’s imports from the U.S. The levies are a “dollar for dollar” response to the U.S. decision to impose 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian goods, effective Aug. 22, Canada said.
Canada said levies of 50% will affect steel and aluminum products that were previously subject to a 25% tariff, along with furniture and clothing. Goods facing 25% tariffs include appliances, dairy products and seafood.
Which industries and states are going to be hardest hit?
Canada’s Industry Minister, Mélanie Joly, said the tariffs aim to exert political pressure in key races in the U.S. midterm elections in November.
Ed Gresser, a former assistant U.S. trade representative now working at the Progressive Policy Institute, said that was clear from the items Canada chose, including lobster and seafood. Half of the lobster caught in Maine goes to Canada, he said, and Maine has an important election this fall that will help determine control of the Senate.
“The states that are most reliant on Canada as an export market are often the northern-tier states—Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, New Hampshire,” Gresser said. Canada is “trying to show the Republican party that there’s a systemic cost to doing this sort of thing.”
Cheese and other dairy items Canada is targeting are produced in Wisconsin, New England and other states.
Other targeted goods include motorcycles, farm equipment and appliances. Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson sold 6,400 motorcycles in Canada last year, about 5% of its worldwide total. John Deere and other manufacturers produce farming equipment throughout the Midwest, including in Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin. Appliance production is concentrated in Ohio and Kentucky.
How would the Canadian tariffs affect U.S. steel and aluminum producers?
The U.S. exported about 8% of its total steel production in 2025, with a little over a third of those exports going to Canada, according to the Commerce Department. Those exports to Canada have fallen from higher levels during the Biden administration, possibly due to Canada’s existing tariffs on U.S. steel and possibly because steel prices in the U.S. are “very high,” giving producers less reason to export, Gresser said.
The U.S. is a relatively minor aluminum producer and exporter these days. Total production by aluminum smelters in the U.S. last year was 660,000 metric tons, compared with 3.3 million metric tons in Canada and 45 million metric tons in China, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Canada is a much larger supplier of aluminum to the U.S. than vice versa. [continues]

“This country desperately needs aluminum,” Trump said during a telephone rally for Mike Mazzei, a Republican candidate for governor in Oklahoma. “Selfishly, we need aluminum in this country. We don’t have it. We get it all from Canada for the most part, and we need it badly.”
In a social media post later Monday, Trump also pitched a “desperately needed” aluminum plant in Inola, Oklahoma while endorsing Mazzei. “You can’t get Aluminum in the United States, and this Plant will go elsewhere if it’s not approved,” he wrote on Truth Social.

South Carolina GOP Fallout
Trump spent money, political capital and personal attention to deliver Graham the nomination. Graham immediately has to persuade the people who voted against her — including a roomful of Republicans who booed the man who delivered her victory — that everybody should now happily march together into November.
The emerging narrative: The press is converging on a fascinating contradiction. Trump won — decisively enough to get his candidate nominated — but Graham received only 52% of Republican runoff voters. Founded in 1995, the program has distributed more than 300 million books and serves more than 3 million registered children.
In several states—including Alabama, California, Illinois and Kentucky—Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library relies on a 50/50 funding match, where community programs raise 50 percent of the costs not covered by the initiative and the state matches 50 percent.

The program works in close collaboration with local community partners, such as schools, local councils, local businesses, libraries and nonprofits. It covers the administrative costs of the initiative, while local partners raise funds to cover wholesale book and mailing costs for their specific areas.
Children enrolled in the program and their families do not pay anything, regardless of household income.

In a video posted to X by the account RalphNormanFan, a supporter of the senator’s Republican opponent, Rep. Ralph Norman, in the US Senate runoff today, Darline Graham can be seen getting rather upset that the individual was recording their conversation.
In the clip, which cuts between several portions of the conversation and does not show the beginning, Graham can be heard asking, “Is your phone recording this?”
“Yes,” the woman recording the video answers, “because, I mean, this is a political event. There’s always phones recording. So, you’re a politician. You know the drill.”
The video then cuts back to Graham, who is now pointing her finger into the camera, telling the woman, “It kinda does bother me that you’re recording me — I’m gonna be honest — without my permission.”
Following another cut in the footage, the voter can be heard telling Darline, “Yeah, it is; it’s South Carolina law. You’re allowed to go in and…”
South Carolina is a one-party consent state, meaning only one person involved in a conversation or confrontation has to consent for the conversation to be recorded.

I took a drive around the town I live in and three surrounding towns on a mission to see if everybody got the message to lower the flags for Dolly.
Every beautiful stars and stripes flag was lowered to half mast. The gas stations the post offices, the courthouses people‘s flags on their porches. All of them except two on people‘s porches were lowered to half mast.
A fitting tribute to the woman everybody loved …. As one interviewee said, left or right black or white, gay or straight she loved them all.

Lawyers gear up as Trump administration threatens election officials with arrest
…private voting rights attorneys and some attorneys general in Democratic states are gearing up to defend election officials and file lawsuits against the federal government if they believe the Trump administration is attempting to undermine the elections.
The Washington Litigation Group – a nonprofit law firm that formed last year to more broadly challenge the Trump administration in court – is hiring lawyers to focus on protecting polling officials, government workers and voters ahead of the November elections.
The D.C.-based group, which raises money from individuals and foundations, is adding about six attorneys to focus on election litigation. The new hires include former prosecutors, constitutional law experts and public interest lawyers.
Their preparation includes consulting with state and local election workers in case they end up needing representation and training election workers on how to respond if federal officials approach them.
Ahead of the midterm elections, the Justice Department has sued 30 states and D.C. for their voter rolls, but so far it has lost every one of the 23 legal challenges that have been decided. Under federal law, states run the nation’s elections – not the federal government – and states have historically not been asked to hand over their voter rolls to the federal government.
In early July, Harmeet K. Dhillon, who runs the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, sent letters to election officials in 50 states last month and warned that they could be arrested if they knowingly allow noncitizens vote in their jurisdictions.
“Any election officer, including the chief election officer of the state, who knowingly retains noncitizens on the state’s” voter list “or facilitates noncitizens in receiving and casting ballots could be subject to criminal liability,” Dhillon wrote.
Those letters were backed by similar threats made by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin.

Entertainment Weekly can confirm that Dolly Parton’s upcoming stage show, DOLLY: A True Original Musical, will debut as planned following the country legend’s death.
“As was Dolly’s wish, the Broadway production of DOLLY: A True Original Musical will begin previews December 7 at the St. James Theatre in New York City with opening set for January 19, 2027, what would have been her 81st birthday,” the musical’s producers shared in a statement with EW.
The production was performed at the Belmont University Fisher Center for the Performing Arts in Nashville last year. It was announced last month that the show would be making its way to New York City.

Days before the Army’s top officer was abruptly fired earlier this year, he was advised by a fellow general now vying to replace him to stop the military’s investigation into an unauthorized helicopter flyby of musician Kid Rock’s Tennessee estate, three people familiar with the matter said.
Gen. Randy George, whom Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth removed as the Army chief of staff without explanation, felt it was important to follow typical protocol and determine whether any safety regulations had been violated during the March 28 flyby, these people said. Like some others, they spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the episode.
Gen. Chris LaNeve, the Army’s No. 2 officer, told George that Hegseth did not want the investigation to proceed, one person said. The two others said that George later confided in colleagues about the encounter with LaNeve and seemed troubled by it. George told them that LaNeve suggested it would be best if the review was scuttled, those people said.
The revelation, which has not previously been reported, adds a new layer of understanding to Hegseth’s potential motivations for firing George on April 2. Kid Rock, whose legal name is Robert Ritchie, is a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump and avowed critic of many Democratic politicians and causes.
Through a spokesman, George, who is now retired, declined to comment. Army officials did not respond to questions about LaNeve, whose candidacy for the chief of staff job faces resistance in Congress.

The US Food and Drug Administration weighed in on the composition of this season’s flu and COVID vaccines this past spring. Yet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) hasn’t provided guidance about either vaccine.
“We’re in limbo in regard to this federal advisory committee,” Schaffner said. “However, professional societies—the American Academy of Pediatrics [AAP], the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Physicians—are all recommending routine vaccination.”
IDSA, along with the Vaccine Integrity Project at the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP), publisher of CIDRAP News, recommend that adults and children with compromised immune systems receive a COVID vaccine. They also recommend an annual flu shot.
“There will be available an updated influenza vaccine and an updated COVID vaccine. So far, that’s pretty normal,” William Schaffner, MD, professor of infectious diseases at Vanderbilt Health and spokesperson for the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), told CIDRAP News. “Insurers, that is, the medical insurance industry, have said that they would cover those vaccines.”
Across the country, public health departments continue to recommend flu and COVID-19 vaccines in alignment with medical association guidelines.
“Local public health and state public health [are] literally standing in the gap right now,” said Michelle Taylor, MD, DrPH, commissioner of the Baltimore City Health Department, during a Big Cities Health Coalition press briefing. “We understand what to do for respiratory viral season. We do it every year.”
In early August, the FDA approved the first mRNA flu shot, Moderna’s mFlusiva, for people aged 50 to 64, but it might take time before it’s widely available.
Studies of the mRNA flu vaccine looked at how it stacked up to a standard-dose flu shot, and the FDA approved it for people up to age 64. “People age 65 and older, they preferentially get one of the enhanced vaccines, high-dose, adjuvanted, or recombinant, and so there wasn’t a comparison with one of the enhanced vaccines,” Schaffner said. “Those data will come along.”

Catholic bishops tell Florida AG there’s no theological reason for school vaccine exemptions
Catholic bishops in Florida are warning the state’s attorney general to respect their religious liberty when it comes to parochial schools’ approach to vaccine exemptions.
Florida’s Catholic schools do not accept religious exemptions for vaccines. In a letter to Attorney General James Uthmeier, made public last week, the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops said Florida bishops don’t have to justify their position, but are doing so “out of respect for you and your office.”
The letter goes on to say that the position against religious exemptions for vaccines is rooted in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which states that, “Life and physical health are precious gifts entrusted to us by God. We must take reasonable care of them, taking into account the needs of others and the common good.”
The bishops’ letter follows a July 31 letter from Uthmeier, in which he told the bishops there is “no legitimate religious reason” to refuse religious exemptions for vaccines and that the church should “comply with Florida law.” On the social media platform X, Uthmeier posted the letter and warned that Catholic schools could be disqualified from state scholarships and vouchers.
In their response, the bishops reminded Uthmeier that it is they, not the government, who decide how to interpret Catholic principles and theology.
