The Trump administration is ending subsidies that helped keep costs down for Medicare drug coverage. The change could mean higher Medicare Part D premiums for millions of beneficiaries in 2027.
Under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, Medicare patients’ out-of-pocket drug spending was capped at $2,000 starting in 2025, and it changed the way insurers pay for drugs.
That meant that while seniors would have to pay less at the pharmacy counter and therefore have easier access to expensive prescription drugs, insurers would be on the hook for more of the bill.
At first, insurers didn’t know how much more they’d be spending — or how high to set premiums. To ease the transition for insurers, the Biden administration created temporary subsidies to stabilize premiums through what’s called a demonstration project.
The subsidies were expected to last through 2027, but they’re ending a year early.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, who oversees the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, made the announcement on the social media platform X. “The Biden admin gave BILLIONS of taxpayer money DIRECTLY to Big Insurance Companies,” he wrote. “This is unacceptable.”
CMS estimated that the subsidies would cost $9.8 billion in 2025 and 2026, according to a report by the Government Accountability Office published in February. About 23 million people were enrolled in standalone Medicare Part D drug plans in 2025, according to the report.
Oz went on to say that the subsidies are no longer needed, adding that most people with Medicare will pay less than $10 more in premiums next year.
But it could be more than that, says Juliette Cubanski, vice president and director of the Program on Medicare Policy at KFF, the nonpartisan research organization. This year, the subsidies reduced the average drug plan premium by $16.
“That might not sound like a lot of money to some people,” she says. “To put it in context, the average premium now for drug coverage through standalone plans is $36. So people might have had to pay nearly 50% more for drug coverage this year without this demonstration.”
She says until CMS releases more information in the fall, it’s hard to know exactly how much more money seniors will have to spend.
Stacie Dusetzina, a professor of health policy at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, says while the subsidies were never meant to be permanent, ending them now is concerning.
The subsidies have been most helpful for standalone Medicare drug plans rather than Medicare Advantage plans, which have more flexibility to keep premiums low. As a result, removing the subsidies will affect people with traditional Medicare plans the most, she says.

To avoid the higher premiums for drug coverage, patients may move away from traditional Medicare plans and toward Medicare Advantage plans. While Medicare Advantage may have lower premiums, she says there are tradeoffs, including a more limited network of providers and hospitals that accept Medicare Advantage.
“That also requires you to think pretty far in advance about your long-term health needs,” Dusetzina says.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump’s people, at some point, try to change the way the data is collected, analyzed, and calculated, to make the inflation number lower. It’s what Trump would want.
Trump doesn’t know what causes inflation, or what harm it does to an economy.
He just says it is “bad, very bad” in his singsong voice and his elementary school dementia vocabulary.
So, rather than adopt sensible economic policies, like lowering his stupid tariffs, he’ll just have his people “fix” the number.

If those go up it could make a hole in the budget. Because of Lewis/McChord and Madigan Hospital, Pierce County is a major retirement area quite dependent on those facilities.

Brewery that promised free beer when Trump dies loses alcohol permit
Minocqua Brewing Company, owned by outspoken progressive activist Kirk Bangstad, will have its alcohol permit revoked Aug. 4, according to the state’s Department of Revenue.
The action follows a June raid in which state officials seized canned beer from Bangstad’s company, alleging it had been transported into Wisconsin from Illinois without the required permits and taxes, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, part of the USA TODAY Network.

“We’re going to fight the state of Wisconsin tooth and nail, and once again, they’ll have to pry me out of my taprooms before I stop selling beer to thirsty progressives who come to visit us,” Bangstad wrote July 26.
He called the revocation “heavy-handed” and said he intends to challenge the decision.
FBI interview added to controversy
The permit revocation comes about three months after FBI agents interviewed Bangstad over a social media post that appeared to reference an alleged assassination attempt against Trump following the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25.
Bangstad has frequently made headlines for blending political activism with his brewery business, often using his platforms to criticize Trump and other Republicans. The permit fight is the latest chapter in a dispute with state regulators that has played out in courtrooms, government offices and the public arena for years.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH) made some of his first public comments this week about the ongoing scandal rocking the Republican Party in his state: the domestic violence allegations against Rep. Max Miller (R-OH) brought by his ex-wife, the daughter of Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH).
Miller is in a tough reelection fight as Democrats in the state are calling for his resignation following allegations made in divorce documents from Emily Moreno, who accused Miller of physical and emotional abuse.
Emily Moreno has accused Miller of having “scalded her chest and stomach by throwing hot water from a skillet at her body; held a gun to her head; pushed her against a wall and hit her head; and fractured their daughter’s collarbone and bruised her shoulder,” according to a recent New York Times report.
Miller has vehemently denied the allegations and filed a defamation suit against his ex-wife.
DeWine spoke to local Columbus ABC affiliate reporter Morgan Trau on Wednesday and told her that “the accusations are certainly very serious and certainly troubling.”
The currently term-limited DeWine added of Miller, “My relationship with him, our professional relationship, has been very good. He has worked with us on different things. We’ve talked back and forth about different issues.”
“These accusations are worrying to you if they are correct, but because you have a beneficial relationship with him, you’re focusing on that?” Trau pressed the governor.
“No, that was an aside. You didn’t ask the question; I volunteered it because I think it’s relevant to what kind of job he’s doing as a congressman. But no, these are troubling accusations,” DeWine replied, adding that “people of the district are having to weigh the facts. They are the ultimate people who decide; They’re the ones who decide who they want to represent.”
Sen. Bernie Moreno’s office has yet to release a statement on the scandal, and the senator has not spoken publicly about Rep. Miller or his reelection bid.
Miller attacked the Ohio senator in a social media post in May, however, dragging their family fight very much out into the public, writing, “It is unfortunate that @berniemoreno continues to fund and enable his daughter’s malicious campaign to ruin my life despite his knowledge of her mental health issues. When the US was awarded a joint bid to host this year’s men’s World Cup, all the way back in 2018, Jared was quick to take credit. It was Jared who arranged Infantino’s first meeting with Trump, at the White House in 2018, where the president flashed a red card at the assembled members of the press.
The proposal, which Infantino reportedly cooked up without much, if any, consultation from other high-ranking officials, also amounts to a potential golden parachute for the Swiss-Italian bureaucrat. Infantino would be term-limited after his expected re-election next year. According to the The Athletic, the deal would create a new position, analogous to an NFL commissioner, with pay in the range of roughly $60 million a year, and which Infantino would be expected to fill. If that were to happen, Infantino would end up making orders of magnitude more money out of this deal than the soccer federations it purports to enrich.
Infantino, with help from JP Morgan, is proposing to sell an up-to-20-percent stake in FIFA’s marketing and events business to a “geographically-diversified investor group” of investors helmed by Thrive Capital, the investment shop run by Jared’s younger brother, Josh Kushner. Under the proposal, Thrive and its partners would raise $4.2 billion and FIFA’s 211 member nations would each walk away with a onetime $40 million payday. As it happens, those 211 associations are also the ones who are supposed to vote on this proposal.
The first concerns a conflict between FIFA and its European confederation, UEFA, which is the hegemon of club soccer and also home to most of the world’s top national teams, but which comprises a fraction of FIFA’s voting membership. FIFA and UEFA have clashed in the past over similar cash grabs, and Infantino—despite hailing from Switzerland—has drawn much of his political support and financial backing from outside the continent. If the plan does fail, it will be because Europe was willing to use its substantial non-voting leverage to blow it up.
