We all need to be watchful and wary on election day. The article linked below pertains to Nebraska, but contains info that may be useful in this hateful climate of potential voter challenge and/or intimidation that we find ourselves facing in this election.

tried-to-voteThe article gave me ideas of what to look out for and what could happen. It also spurred me to look up the law in my own state so that I could be forearmed on Tuesday. I also intend to bring my phone with me and take pictures if I see something untoward. I live in a largely Hispanic voter poling district so at this point I think anything is possible.       to what extent will messages (ranging from mere platitudes, eco-friendly images, pro/anti abortion choice words to the colors red or blue) on tee shirts cause banishment from line in those states that restrict electioneering within a certain distance from polls on election day?

  2. Campaign slogans or names showing usually will be a cause to be refused access to the polling station.  But it always comes with the caveat of “It Depends”.  Some election judges let all sorts of things through, that other judges will not.

    If you see anything strange or wrong makes calls, at least one to your county party headquarters.  There are a lot of lawyers all geared up to run into action.  The county party has the phone numbers to call.  If you are in the polling station there are poll watchers, political party officials, let her know what you saw or heard.  They will have the phone numbers to call and can do the calling.

    If you are interested in being an official poll watcher for your county party you could stop by the headquarters and ask if you can help.  More likely you might be asked to help drive people to the polling station.  But, it is important work that can be fun.

    What happens if you have been harassed in a hateful climate of potential voter challenge and/or intimidation in advance of voting?  Does it only matter if at the polling place?

  4. Ping, watch any Russian tv lately? it’s state run. Funny how similar the RTV messages  (i.e. Putin) is to your guy’s words about Clinton.  Seems Clinton was right about them being sympatico.

    I wish I ran her media operations. There’s a great commercial in this.  Quote the words, put trump & Putin pics up, ask who said these things, dissolve the background, fill the screen with trump, morph to Putin.

    I’m so relieved that I can pursue my 4th career after the election.  Trump to reopen TrumpU after he wins. I think I’ll wait until Wednesday to “apply”.

  7. Voter challenge or intimidation?  What crap.  Challenging your views and trump lies like you challenge ours and Hillary’s statements is not voter intimidation.

    By all means vote…secure in the knowledge that Craig’s dad’s vote offset yours.

While I actually miss the community experience of voting at a local location, this is outweighed by opening my mailbox, making the marks, and dropping it off at the little white box two blocks away.  If I don’t want to do that, I can splurge on the cost of a stamp and the mailman will take care of it for me.

  11. Thanks for this post GrannyM.  I know my state’s election laws, but clicked on your link and looked up NH just in case anything had changed from a few years ago….  nope…  which is reassuring.

    I love to go to the polls and see friends and neighbors.  I may even stick around for awhile on Tuesday just to do a little observing myself.  Although I’m sure that my town is too small (and too white) to bother with anyone creating any mischief.

  12. this year I would have preferred voting early just to make sure it was recorded in case things get out of hand or technical glitches happen on the day itself.  but alas don’t fit the allowable loop holes to vote early so will gird myself for the unexpected.

    ….the Trump campaign itself has since August been requesting that volunteers sign up as “election observers” to “Help Me Stop Crooked Hillary From Rigging This Election!”. Stone, meanwhile, has said he has helped recruit people to do “exit polls” to tackle voter fraud.

    The nation’s most prominent anti-government militia and a neo-Nazi group have also announced plans to send their members to monitor for voter fraud outside the polls.

    Former US attorney general Alberto Gonzales, a Republican who served under the administration of George W Bush and took a noted hardline on election fraud allegations, expressed caution. He told the Guardian: “I wouldn’t be a big fan of those kind of private efforts, quite honestly. I would depend on the state and local officials to make sure of the integrity of the vote within particular precincts. The danger, of course, is that if you have a very heavy-handed presence that may in fact intimidate certain people based upon their age and their education.”

    The Guardian revealed last month that a Republican operative, Mike Roman, notorious for stirring allegations of voter intimidation in the 2008 election, would coordinate the Trump monitor program, but the campaign has declined to provide details on the size and scale of the program and it remains unclear how many people will show up.

    … In a “new effort”, the National Socialist Movement, a white nationalist, neo-Nazi organization, is planning to send out hundreds of members to watch for voter fraud outside polling places in 48 states, with a focus on California, Illinois, Florida and Michigan, Butch Urban, the group’s chief of staff, said.

    Members would not be wearing their uniforms or National Socialist Movement gear. “They’re going to look like everybody else that’s going in there to vote,” Urban said.

    He called voter fraud “so rampant”, and said the group would have lawyers on call.

    The president of one of America’s largest anti-government armed militia groups, the Oath Keepers, called on members last week to take part in undercover poll-watching under the moniker of “Operation Sabot 2016”.

    In a bizarre set of instructions to the group’s reported 30,000 members – an organization of “current and formerly serving military, police, and first responders” – Stewart Rhodes, a former US army paratrooper, also encouraged members to “blend in” among voters and attempt to record evidence of widespread voter fraud.

Pogo – tried to do early voting, but the lines were two plus hours long.  I can stand for about ten minutes then I have to sit.  I will pack my wheelchair for Tuesday, just in case.  It is a lot more comfortable than sitting on the cement or a first graders chair.  We vote at the elementary school.

  16. I like the process of going to the polls to vote, but I’m with Jamie. Marking your ballot at home and mailing it in is the way to go. Poll watchers be damned.

  19. BB, here in Columbia our polling place has disabled parking spots where a poll worker will handle all the admin stuff while you stay in the car. They then bring a portable computer ballot out on which the disabled individual votes. Pretty neat.

  21. My polling place in downstairs in the community room in my building 😀

    If I see a long line I usually just go back upstairs and wait an hour but this year I may hang around the lobby and watch what’s going on there and outside the building. They always have a policeman posted, but this year it may take more than that. I hope I’m proved wrong.

    The company that owns the National Enquirer, a backer of Donald Trump, agreed to pay $150,000 to a former Playboy centerfold model for her story of an affair a decade ago with the Republican presidential nominee, but then didn’t publish it, according to documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal and people familiar with the matter.

    The tabloid-newspaper publisher reached an agreement in early August with Karen McDougal, the 1998 Playmate of the Year. American Media Inc., which owns the Enquirer, hasn’t published anything about what she has told friends was a consensual romantic relationship she had with Mr. Trump in 2006. At the time, Mr. Trump was married to his current wife, Melania.

    Quashing stories that way is known in the tabloid world as “catch and kill.”

    In a written statement, the company said it wasn’t buying Ms. McDougal’s story for $150,000, but rather two years’ worth of her fitness columns and magazine covers as well as exclusive life rights to any relationship she has had with a then-married man. “AMI has not paid people to kill damaging stories about Mr. Trump,” the statement said.

    The anonymous California woman who accused Donald Trump in a federal lawsuit of raping her in the ’90s when she was 13 has voluntarily dismissed her lawsuit, her attorney said late Friday.

    Lisa Bloom, the daughter of renowned women’s rights lawyer Gloria Allred who was working on the plaintiff’s counsel, posted messages to her social media accounts announcing the news. In them, she sends support to the anonymous woman, who was identified in the suit as “Jane Doe.”

    Doe had accused the Republican presidential nominee of raping her during the summer of 1994, allegedly in the home of Jeffrey Epstein — a businessman and convicted sex offender also named in the lawsuit.

    “Jane Doe instructed us to dismiss her lawsuit against Trump and Epstein today,” Bloom wrote. “Tough week for her. We wish her well.”

    “Every woman makes her own own choice about what is best for her,” Bloom continued. “Life’s a journey. Most of us get stronger as we get older. I respect women.”

    It was, in fact, a tough week for Doe. On Wednesday, she was set to go public for the first time in a press conference. But as the press conference was about to begin in Bloom’s California offices, Bloom called it off citing threats to the plaintiff.

    In her original lawsuit, Doe claimed that: “Immediately following this rape, Defendant Trump threatened me that, were I ever to reveal any of the details of Defendant Trump’s sexual and physical abuse of me, my family and I would be physically harmed if not killed.”

    Reversing a one-day-old appeals court ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court says Arizona can enforce its law banning the collection of early-voting ballots by political campaigners. The ruling means that in Arizona, the practice that critics call “ballot harvesting” will be a felony in Tuesday’s election.

    The law was enacted earlier this year; since then, it’s been in a tug-of-war between Republicans and Democrats — as on Friday, when the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals voted 6-5 to block the law. Today’s ruling changes that.

    The state of Arizona immediately sought a stay on the 9th Circuit’s ruling that blocked the law, H.B. 2023, Friday.

    “The state’s stay application went to Justice Anthony Kennedy, who is responsible for the geographic area that includes Arizona,” SCOTUSblog reports.     The Supreme Court issued its stay on the block shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday, “in a brief two-sentence order,” SCOTUSblog says. It did not provide details about how individual justices viewed the case.

    The full 11-judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court is slated to review Arizona’s law in January; the Supreme Court says that the challenge to the law will have to wait until then.

    Saturday’s reversal came one day after several federal courts, including the 9th Circuit, ruled in Democrats’ favor Friday, in what has become a state-by-state legal battle over voting standards and rules.
    As Barbara Campbell wrote for the Two-Way last night, in addition to Arizona, federal judges in North Carolina, Ohio, and Kansas respectively moved to: reinstate voters whose registration had been stripped; order all parties to refrain from any voter intimidation; and block a proof-of-citizenship requirement.

  42. Hillary enthusiasm is great here!!!  I have a very large lightweight sign from 2008 in my garage.  It is too large to be transported in my car.  I live at the corner of two very busy streets in Salem.  I took the big sign out this evening and the response was overwhelming.

I don’t know if it is still a limit, Colorado allowed an individual to carry up to five ballots to the collection point, which is the county or city clerks office.  No one ever explained the real logic behind the limit.  At the assisted living homes letting someone with a car deliver a box of ballots would make sense.  However, in politics all logic is tossed out.

     

  54. Would appreciate good vibes sent to Zephyr Teachout leading up to Election Day. She’s in a close race against a business-as-usual Republican. Maybe the best way to help a future President Clinton would be to elect sane, competent, decent people who will help, not hinder.
