Why? Because it takes a 15 hour filibuster to get the pugns to allow a vote on things that 90% of the country supports. But a quick check of NRA campaign contributions helps explain that.
And because pugns and their NRA benefactors think preventIng someone who’s not allowed to board an airplane because of suspected terror connections from buying an AR 15 violates due process.
Here’s the NRA contribution info. You might notice a trend. (Hint – R)

Obama at least acknowledged the puerto rican victims. it is strange that there has been little mention other than this in the ny times the other day:
As the names of the victims of Sunday’s massacre here rolled out, this slice of the United States — known as the unofficial 79th municipio, or municipality, of Puerto Rico — felt a communal shudder. It was a roll call of Puerto Ricans, gay and straight, who had gathered to dance and hear salsa music at the club and died in the barrage of bullets. Like so many others, they were here, in this booming Central Florida metropolitan area of nearly 400,000 Puerto Ricans,…
[….] A staggering 90 percent of the 49 victims killed by Omar Mateen, the gunman who opened fire in a gay nightclub, were Hispanic or of Hispanic descent, including Mexican, Colombian and Dominican, community leaders said. Of those, 23 were Puerto Rican. This has stunned Puerto Rican residents across Florida — where there are a million islanders, rivaling the number in New York State — and on the island, where the deaths have set off a national mourning.
so the hate crime itself could encompass a hatred of hispanics as well as gays…and not just the hated west of the terrorist.
omg, john mccain has come down with trumpitis… a kind of human form zika-like disease that causes brain shrinkage.

LONDON — The man detained by police in connection with the killing of a rising star of British politics had long-standing ties to a U.S.-based neo-Nazi organization and, in the past, had ordered a how-to guide for assembling a homemade gun, according to a watchdog group that tracks extremist behavior.
The revelation came as police on Friday continued to investigate the motive behind the killing of the British lawmaker, Jo Cox, who was stabbed and shot midday Thursday in an attack that stunned the nation and led to a suspension of the European Union referendum campaign just a week before the vote.
“The major political task that we face in the next five months is to make certain that Donald Trump is defeated and defeated badly,” Sanders told supporters in a live stream video. “And I personally intend to begin my role in that process in a very short period of time.”
bernie, defeat trump “badly”? shouldn’t that be “goodly”? like overwhelmingly good-bye drumpf and good riddance
The spirit of dominion, on the other hand, does not start with an awareness of God. It starts with a sense of injury and a desire to heal injury through revenge and domination.
Well, looks like the Democrats are putting the pressure on Bernie. I saw 2 articles with almost the same headline
That one was in Bloomberg and another one was on the Politico’s web site.
Jack
I really encouraged by the Democratic push back against the John McCain attack on Obama. It was swift and from many directions. It caused McCain to walk it back, It is a new day, McCain has been used to using Obama as a political punching bag, no more.
“Hillary is better at this than any of these people,” he continued, expressing some affection for Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders before launching into a very detailed metaphor to explain the 2016 campaign.
“It’s like if you were on a plane and you wanted to choose a pilot,” the comedian began.
“You have one person, Hillary, who says, ‘Here’s my license. Here’s all the thousands of flights that I’ve flown. Here’s planes I’ve flown in really difficult situations. I’ve had some good flights and some bad flights, but I’ve been flying for a very long time, and I know exactly how this plane works.’ Then you’ve got Bernie, who says, ‘Everyone should get a ride right to their house with this plane.’ ‘Well, how are you going to do that?’ ‘I just think we should. It’s only fair that everyone gets to use the plane equally.’ And then Trump says, ‘I’m going to fly so well. You’re not going to believe how good I’m going to fly this plane, and by the way, Hillary never flew a plane in her life.’ ‘She did, and we have pictures.’ ‘No, she never did it.’ It’s insane.”
So why, despite those considerable qualifications, does C.K. believe Clinton has faced such consistent headwinds with skeptical voters?
“There is a fear of Hillary,” he said. “I think some of it has to do with Hillary being such a strong candidate and being a woman. The response to her is very male. The other side is very male-oriented. Trump is a man. Well, he’s a boy, and Bernie is an old man.”
Was pleased to see both Obama and Biden appear. That rarely happens outside of DC
Why does this keep happening Because the congress both houses are afraid of what the NRA will do to them if they support any kind of gun saety measures. It isn’t so much the donations as the aggressive actions if you oppose.
It happens because Republicans are chicken shit
I agree with Pogo and KGC as to “why this keeps happening”. But the Democrats haven’t exactly been brave where this issue is concerned either. It keeps happening despite the majority of Americans wanting more gun control because of money in politics.
It’s because W won twice that we have a Supreme Court that allowed Citizens United to become law. If we can fix that… maybe we can finally fix a few other things as well.
That Louis CK quote may be the best metaphor I’ve seen on this election!

Was just thinking: as sore losers go, Bernie is right up there with Ted Kennedy in 1980 against Carter, which helped Reagan win.
Why does this keep happening?
Because we let it. In a few weeks it will all be old news and we will be arguing some other triviality.
I think Blue Bronc nailed it yesterday without intending too.
She was appalled at the attack on the LBGT community but not enough to give up her toys. (high capacity clips)
Jack
BTW, if you really need 30 round clips for home defense, you really need to get out of the drug trade and into a safer business.
Jack
High capacity magazines mean if someone broke into your house and you got the first shot off, you should also have the next seventeen – just to make sure he won’t bother you. Something about being in the military and “you will never be a good cop when I am done with you” combat small arms instructor.
If some one is breaking into your house the smartest thing to do is tell them to get the fuck out. That solves 90% + of the problems as most home invasions are burglaries and they really don’t want to be in the same house with you, too much risk The others will be persuaded with a load of buck shot. This includes your rival drug gang too.
There is no need for any civilian to have high capacity clips except for when they want to make a lot of noise on the shooting range. For civilians they are toys and that is all.
Apparently Bernie thinks that he is going to win California after all the votes have been counted.

KGC… point well taken. One can complain about past mistakes all one wants… but things can only be fixed in the here and now. And it’s obvious that Republicans will obstruct any meaningful gun control measures… they need to be voted out.
Except for one time I have never been in fear of my physical safety. I live in rural Western Sonoma County and we don’t even lock our door.I don’t like to drive at night so we aren’t out wandering around not that there are much (any) muggings in Cazadero. So the idea of defending of my life is pretty distant. And owning a gun???? I’m in the camp that believes I would get shot.
I do know a lot of my neighbors have guns and I hope they don’t end up shooting each other.
I don’t think people need automatic weapons big clips or any of the tools of the mass murderer. I think I am with the majority in that opinion
As for No fly no buy? Well duh. I think anyone who votes against it is an idiot – they certainly haven’t raised due process concerns in the past. All of a sudden the goops are so concerned with people’s rights. I hope they can’t get rid of Trump and it’s the end of the goopers for good.

flatus & sturge, your senator puts in his 2 cents on the nofly nobuy
“If you’re on a no-fly list, if the government has determined that you are too dangerous to get on an airplane, I believe you shouldn’t be able to buy a gun. But [there must be] a process to challenge that determination in court.”
“So that’s where Mr. Trump is going,” he said. “Mr. Trump is on the right road to trying to find the middle ground. If you’re on a no-fly list, if you’ve been selected for extra screening because of your behavior, you present a danger or a threat, then I don’t think you should be able to buy a gun, but you should have a way to challenge the government’s accusation against you.”
btw, later on he still says he’s not voting for either drumpf or hillary
Staffers also posted selfies with the beaming Massachusetts senator on social media accounts.
“Don’t screw this up,” Warren joked to the crowd that had assembled to greet and meet the prospective vice presidential candidate.
[….]
According to a source familiar with the visit, Warren talked to Clinton staff about the implications of the election for the Supreme Court, protecting Dodd-Frank, and the Affordable Care Act. She thanked Clinton’s staff for their hard work and she talked about Clinton having the “steady hand” to keep America safe.
The source noted that Clinton supporters and surrogates often visit HQ to meet staffers. Other recent visitors include Sen. Chuck Schumer, Wendy Davis, former Rep. Gabby Giffords, Sec. Julian Castro and Jon Bon Jovi.

KC, are you shitting me? Bernie lost by 440000 votes or 12.5%. In June contests alone Hillary got 750,000 MORE votes than he did and she increased her 538 vote/target %age by 2% – from 108 at the end of May to 110% when all was said and done. What the hell flavor of Bernieade is he drinking? Must be laced with some really good shit.
Well, while bernie is still trying to wrest concessions from the party he used for his own gain, his reluctance to get the hell with the game doesn’t seem to be hurting Hillary against drumpf. From the Morning Plum:
Donald Trump’s slide in the national polls is becoming so obvious that even he may not be able to deny it for much longer. Or will he?
Politico’s Steven Shepard has a good analysis of all the recent polling that makes two basic points. First, the polls now “unanimously” show that Hillary Clinton is building a real lead over Trump. And second, a look at all the recent polls showing him upside down — which are detailed at length in the piece — reveals that Trump’s personal unfavorable numbers are not just bad. They are actually “setting modern records for political toxicity.”
I think Clinton’s campaign is doing the right thing – spending trashing Rump and also investing in building up her positive numbers
Next Bernie will be mooning people. the wholee claim is lame but the haters need something to cling to. I noticed Dr. Jill Stein of the Green Party has been vigorously attacking Clinton and bit viciously as well
McCain. He served and survived the North Vietnamese prison. Much has been written about those years. Many of us old farts know those years. When he ran in 2008 there was a bit of talk about how he might be showing things from the abuse and deprivation of those years. Since then there has been a deference to his status as a veteran and a senator when he has spouted strange and disturbing statements.
Craig might be in possession of more current information, but what I know is that the man should retire. No end of the campaign stuff. He needs to do a exit stage left immediately. He is embarrassing himself.
BB
This is not the first time McCain has had to walk back intemperate remarks – he has a short fuse. I don’t think he is losing it -just being the old “straight talking” John McCain – that’s a joke of course
Charleston had a much-loved and semi-famous black chief of police named Reuben Greenberg originally from Houston, Texas. He was famous for roller skating around town at all hours and generally keeping things on an even keel. Charismatic and possessed of a nimble wit he was a natural for television but seemed always to wish for nothing more than to be chief of Police in Charleston. Well, towards the end of his career he began to slowly, a little here, a little there, behave erratically. He had always been eccentric, shall we say, but these incidents began to attract major attention……..until it became evident that the poor guy was suffering from some kind of dementia, Alzheimer’s or something. He’d started to do stuff like blue-light drivers here and there and threaten to give them a ticket or berate them for something totally weird…..pretty soon our mayor since forever, Joe Riley….the man who’d hired him all those years ago, had to call him in and relieve him of his duty. It was a sad scene downtown.
he moved into the long good-night.
dont know what it was like behind the curtain, but publicly he took it like a champ.
Sturg
Are you saying you think it could be the beginning of the end for McCain?
McCain has long been in the habit of using Obama as a punching bag, even going back to the Senate.
This time there was a united effort by the Democrats to punch back. I think he was rather startled
It is no longer team Obama.
Johnny boy welcome to the world of team Clinton.
Jack
K……I’ve actually been thinking that very thing for a long time now…..but he’s beginning to act like Gaius Marius, seven time consul……
i think he’s having his own press read to him……
Haha, he was startled……..I can see his old head turtling into his shoulders……
For many GOP insiders long resistant to Trump, the vice-presidential question was an opportunity to tee off on the real-estate mogul. One Iowa Republican said being Trump’s running mate was “like being first mate on the Titanic.”
“No one should have to endure that,” added an Ohio Republican.
“No one remembers who Goldwater’s running mate was, but at least that person had some honor,” a New Hampshire Republican said. “The one who says yes to Trump will not.”
“It won’t matter, except for the poor unfortunate soul who will gain the world’s worst resume line,” said a Virginia Republican.
“I don’t see any rational political figure accepting this suicide mission except those with an exaggerated ego and self-inflated thoughts of political superego,” a Florida Republican said.
“Anyone willing to share the ticket with Donald Trump is unfit for the office of the vice president,” insisted an Iowa Republican.
“There is no one Trump can pick that would make him palatable,” said a Pennsylvania Republican.
Sounds like a job for Newtie
I do think it is important to never let up until the election is over Trump cornered could be the nuclear option
Debbie Wasserman Schultz has handed the day-to-day operations of the Democratic Party over to Clinton’s hand picked operator Brandon Davis.
Davis assumes the role of Chief of Staff, but in reality, he will be running the Democratic National Committee until a new Chairperson is selected at this year’s convention. He is currently the national political coordinator for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
Wasserman-Schultz will retain her title in name only until the Democratic party votes on a successor.

jack, how can it be anybody else other than newtie described by this from your link:
“I don’t see any rational political figure accepting this suicide mission except those with an exaggerated ego and self-inflated thoughts of political superego,” a Florida Republican said.
of course, half-gov fits the bill if you leave out “rational”
Banks, others say no to Trump –> Companies who were previously reliable donors to Republican causes and candidates are opting not to fund the party’s convention in Cleveland next month, not wanting anything to do with Donald Trump. Zachary Mider and Elizabeth Dexheimer for Bloomberg Politics: “Among those to signal in recent days that they won’t sponsor the convention this year are Wells Fargo & Co., United Parcel Service Inc., Motorola Solutions Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Ford Motor Co., and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. All of those companies sponsored the previous Republican conclave, in Tampa, Florida, in 2012.”
But: Individual Wall Street elites are climbing on board with Trump. A fundraiser with $50,000 tickets — and hosts paying $250,000 per couple — will be attended by investors John Paulson, Stephen Feinberg and real estate magnate Peter Kalikow, all three of whom had not publicly supported Trump before now.
“Trump, His Virus and the Dark Age of Unreason” also from bill moyers:
There’s a virus infecting our politics and right now it’s flourishing with a scarlet heat. It feeds on fear, paranoia and bigotry. All that was required for it to spread was a timely opportunity — and an opportunist with no scruples.
There have been stretches of history when this virus lay dormant. Sometimes it would flare up here and there, then fade away after a brief but fierce burst of fever. At other moments, it has spread with the speed of a firestorm, a pandemic consuming everything in its path, sucking away the oxygen of democracy and freedom.
Today its carrier is Donald Trump, but others came before him: narcissistic demagogues who lie and distort in pursuit of power and self-promotion. Bullies all, swaggering across the landscape with fistfuls of false promises, smears, innuendo and hatred for others, spite and spittle for anyone of a different race, faith, gender or nationality.
[….]
Trump and his ilk would sweep the promise of America into the dustbin of history unless they are exposed now to the disinfectant of sunlight, the cleansing torch of truth. Nothing else can save us from the dark age of unreason that would arrive with the triumph of Donald Trump.
above cartoon emphasizes why the yearning behind moyers saying: “We can hope for journalists with the courage and integrity of an Edward R. Murrow to challenge this would-be tyrant, to put the truth to every lie and publicly shame the devil for his outrages.”
MARK SHIELDS: Judy, there is no reason in the United States for civilian circulation of assault weapons, none. It’s indefensible as a product, shouldn’t be manufactured in the United States, any more than bazookas should be or flamethrowers.
Running as Trump’s VP could be the road to the Oval Office, but extremely unlikely. Considering how much Trump wants to be with Putin, it would probably not take but a handful of months before impeachment would be the debate of the day in the Congress. Trump would be possibly doing things with Putin leading to calls of treason. So, in the very extreme of extreme possibilities one wanted to be prez, doing the Trumpy VP route is open.
I can just see Trump putting all his investments in a blind trust.
The best options for the GOP might be to hold their convention, formally disavow the candidate mandating withdrawal of all Party support of said candidate, toss him out on his ear, and then prepare a national-level platform that can be supported by its down-ballot candidates. Parting words to delegates should be, ‘see you in four.’
While this course would concede the WH to Hillary, it might give them a fighting chance to keep the Legislature.
flatus, he’ll make a big show of turning it over to the kids or some fictitious entity called “the trump fake foundation and blind trust”
and the very “best options for the GOP” imo would be for those in the know to leak to fed and state prosecutors credible evidence of criminal behavior by drumpf sufficient to encourage his voluntary withdrawal.
Whiskey Jack, Just in case anyone on the Trail doesn’t know, Goldwater’s running mate was William E. Miller. His daughter is liberal radio/podcast Sexy Liberal Tour star Stephanie Miller.
She often appears with John Fugelsang.

KGC… no it isn’t just you. The first time I saw a commercial for the movie I only caught the last half. When I saw the letters BFG, I thought the same thing you did… and that maybe Disney had gone over to the dark side.
It’s so hard to keep track of what a woman still can’t do these days. I guess it’s because I have a ladybrain, which is covered in glitter, you see, and that gets into all the crevices and short-circuits the synapses. The most recent additions to the list include the following: bust ghosts; be James Bond; be vice-president to a female president.
Last week, Senator Jon Tester mused about the possibility of Hillary Clinton choosing Senator Elizabeth Warren as her vice-president: “Is the country ready for two women? I don’t know,” he said. Not “these women” – literally, any women. Tester later apologised, but he had no reason to: he is, after all, by no means the only one to wonder whether America can cope with so much oestrogen in the White House after a mere 230 years of testosterone (which has always worked out so well, of course).
[….]
Yet a female president and vice-president is considered positively mainstream compared with changing the sex of male fictional characters. The prospect of a female James Bond (which will never happen) and women wearing the Ghostbusters uniforms (which has happened) has driven internet manboys around the world to declare their childhoods “ruined”. Which is weird, because if Ghostbusters really could destroy people’s childhoods surely Ghostbusters II took care of that 27 years ago.
People-by-which-I-mean-men have been making rules about what ladies can’t do since they realised women could literally create life while they were sitting in the corner of a cave scratching their balls. Even aside from little things like voting – women weren’t given equal voting rights until 1928, presumably out of concern they would rub their boobs all over the ballots – women were banned from ski jumping in the Olympics until 2014. Yes, as in two years ago.
“We are overjoyed to be grandparents again with the arrival of our grandson, Aidan Clinton Mezvinsky, born on Saturday, June 18, 2016,” the couple said.
“We are all over the moon as Chelsea and Marc welcome Charlotte’s little brother to the world and grateful for our many blessings. Chelsea and Aidan are both doing well and enjoying this very special time together.”
https://youtu.be/JTE4Rf5M2W8 Rachel Maddow looks at the role of self-hatred as a motivating factor in homophobia, even virulent, violent homophobia, and introduces Sohail Ahmed as a case where the dynamics of that self-hatred and Islamic extremism intersect.
I hope chelsea, marc, charlotte and aiden move in with grandma and grandpa in the big white house on penn ave come January. it would be nice to continue the 3 generation family atmosphere there.

Strom Thurmond he ain’t.

Maybe Herman Cain would be willing to step up
looks like the short list got shorter
Condoleezza Rice: ‘Not interested’ in being Trump’s vice president
If Trump only wins Georgia and Mississippi can we throw him and them out
Ya know if I had to listen to irrelevant chatter Cain sounds more interesting than newt
Jack
Was reading somewhere that Georgia has changed enough that it could be in play, much like North Carolina. I’ll believe it when I see it.
Jack
what happens if no one will do it ( Newtie will of course accept)

jack, how can it be anybody else other than newtie described by this from your link:
“I don’t see any rational political figure accepting this suicide mission except those with an exaggerated ego and self-inflated thoughts of political superego,” a Florida Republican said.
of course, half-gov fits the bill if you leave out “rational”
from moyers & co:

KGC… no it isn’t just you. The first time I saw a commercial for the movie I only caught the last half. When I saw the letters BFG, I thought the same thing you did… and that maybe Disney had gone over to the dark side.
Glad to hear it’s not just me
from Hadley freeman at the guardian:
Chelsea Clinton gives birth to son Aidan
Chelsea Clinton is a mom again.
She announced the arrival of son Aidan Clinton Mezvinsky late Saturday morning on Twitter.
Baby Aidan joins big sister Charlotte, who turns 2 on Sept. 26.
On Saturday Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton issued an effusive statement about the latest family addition.

Rachel Maddow looks at the role of self-hatred as a motivating factor in homophobia, even virulent, violent homophobia, and introduces Sohail Ahmed as a case where the dynamics of that self-hatred and Islamic extremism intersect.
I hope chelsea, marc, charlotte and aiden move in with grandma and grandpa in the big white house on penn ave come January. it would be nice to continue the 3 generation family atmosphere there.
