Sunday Serendipity

For Juneteenth:

I went looking for music to celebrate this week’s festivities and discovered an amazing modern 21st century composer. Her name is Valerie Coleman and she was born in Louisville KY, in 1970. If her wiki page can be believed she, like Mozart, is a child prodigy except Mozart had a musician father to push and guide him where as she bootstrapped herself through the love of music and youthful exuberance. She had written 3 symphonies before she was 14 all composed on a small electric organ. I spent most of the afternoon listening to her music and picked four for your enjoyment today.

The first performed at Lincoln center, Fanfare For Uncommon Times. Plus 3 other performed by her wind quintet, Imani Winds. Imani is a Swahili word meaning faith.

Enjoy, Jack

in case you missed Jamie’s very apt contribution in the wee small hours, it’s another nod to “uncommon times” and worthy of many reposts:

Brilliant that is. Thanks Jack. You also inspired me yesterday with your post to finish a video I was working on about me and my Dad. Just in time for Father’s Day…

apropos of the day, cartoonist jeff darcy’s op ed last week says a lot about being a good father

Dad Demand

CLEVELAND, Ohio — President Joe Biden, just hours after his surviving son Hunter was found guilty of three gun-related felonies by a Delaware jury, spoke at the ‘Everytown for Gun Sense’ meeting. Standing before a banner reading ‘MOM’S DEMAND ACTION…’, Hunter’s Dad demanded no pardon or commuting his son’s guilty verdicts and forthcoming sentence. It was a Presidential Dad display of tough love and the rule of law. President Biden went from the Washington D.C. event for a flight to Delaware where he was photographed hugging Hunter upon arrival.
“I’m extremely proud of my son Hunter. He has overcome an addiction, he’s one of the brightest, most decent men I know. I am satisfied that I’m not going to do anything — I said I’d abide by the jury decision. I will do that. And I will not pardon him.”
Thursday at the G7 Summit, President Biden again reiterated he would not pardon Hunter and also added for the first time he would not commute the sentence/verdicts either.

Hug for Hunter

PatD, that’s Boots Randolph on sax, Dad’s favorite musician of all time, from the 8-track days to when he’d ask Alexa to play him in his assisted living apartment.

Boots was a great musician for those who were able to get past “Yakkety Sax”

Goes without saying, sorry to spoil the serendipity but my wake-up text was about a shooting last night in Round Rock, TX at a Juneteenth festival. Our son was there with his family but one of the girls got a tummy ache, so they left early. Short time later, hell broke loose.

Thanks, Pat. You are spot on, trauma leaves a permanent mark. Our son thoughtfully sent the text before we saw news, so we knew they were safe. They are grateful for that well-timed tummy ache. We live in dangerous times wherever we are.

Update: She says her spidey senses went off.

A complete lack of gun control is going SO well!  Great job, SCOTUS, glad contrived “founding father” interpretations (and whatever other bullshit you invent) are more important than human life, you all are so smart!
