Still moving edition
This is a wonderful choir piece to start out the season From, The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge.
Performing: In The Bleak Midwinter
I tried to get last years scaled down performance but for some reason it didn’t want to embed. You can view it on youtube. I very much enjoy the cleanness of the scaled back version. But both are good and worth a listen
Enjoy, Jack
In The Bleak Midwinter
In the Bleak Midwinter” is a poem by the English poet Christina Rossetti, commonly performed as a Christmas carol. The poem was published, under the title “A Christmas Carol“, in the January 1872 issue of Scribner’s Monthly, and was first collected in book form in Goblin Market, The Prince’s Progress and Other Poems (Macmillan, 1875).
In 1906, the composer Gustav Holst composed a setting of Rossetti’s words (titled “Cranham”) in The English Hymnal which is sung throughout the world. An anthem setting by Harold Darke composed in 1909 is also widely performed by choirs and was named the best Christmas carol in a poll of some of the world’s leading choirmasters and choral experts in 2008.
thank you, jack. unfortunately yes, a bleak winter seems so far to have begun.
For some winter fun Finns do it well. An ice carousal would be fun. One with a sauna on an island is better.
an updated hanukkah miracle story in the making perhaps?
the guardian:
sooo, maybe the “festival of lights” will be extended 10 days and be renamed the “festival of delights”? perhaps celebrated by schmearing and eating a different flavored bagel each night for the 10 days instead of just lighting candles for 8.
for the factoid anal retentive of us, here’s a blurb about the usual last day which starts tonight this year:
an early christmas present for our friends to the north who are brightening the lives of their fellow serfs

jack – That is a soothing piece, and, it reminds me that “The Vicar of Dibley” and other BBC Christmas shows are on DVD that I need to get out of seasonal storage.
This is my “bleak winter” pick-me-up. I like it best with flute and guitar, but I have two hours of different versions of this on my playlist. Christmas letter writing music.
In days of yore this would be Jack sitting over in the corner with a portable record player and 2 stacks of 45 rpm records.
And all the boys would have their own comb.
Jack, very nice. Hope the English churches aren’t still helping the kids keep their clear high voices as castrati.
And there’s always Vivaldi’s winter movement from The Four Seasons. On of my crappy season favorites.
Thank you Jack,
This carol has always been a particular favorite. Julie Andrews does a lovely version.
I think Snoopy and Woodstock could skate to “Bordel 1900.”
Julie Andrew’s version is lovely.
Ooh thank you, was looking for one, will try 👍
Thanks Jack! Good luck with your continued moving…

Three times higher .
I reached out thru a mutual friend to Dole’s 1996 presidential campaign secretary I covered a lot in those days, got this nice response: “told Nelson you’re asking about him. He responds: “What a wonderful and decent man. Tell him that means a lot to me. And I’m not being sarcastic. I know it’s impossible to tell with me.”
Bink – I’ve only tried the one with chives. Another brand I like is Treeline. Again, I’ve only tried the chivey/herby one. I’ve had Violife and Mykonos brands; they were good. I would steer clear of anything branded Daiya.

Disgusting. Imbecilic. Republican.
“US Rep. Thomas Massie is drawing criticism after tweeting a photo of him and his family holding guns in front of a Christmas tree, just days after four teenagers were killed in a school shooting in Michigan.”
“Merry Christmas!, ps. Santa, please bring ammo,” read the Saturday tweet by the Republican representative from Kentucky, which showed everyone in the photo holding various types of guns.“
Bob Dole was wounded fighting fascists over there. Now, they are here.
As a Senate page one of our jobs was to bring a glass of water to senators when they stood up to speak. Dole, who was Minority Leader, told me to bring “Barry” (meaning Goldwater) soda water because he “mixes it with gin”, which was true, kept a flask in his desk.
Craig – You have the best stories.
It is that time of the year when all those who bet against the Detroit Lions that they suck one in, finally. Yay Lions they won one game this year.

“Former GOP Sen. David Perdue plans to announce Monday that he’s mounting a primary challenge against Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, a move that will pit the ally of former President Donald Trump against the incumbent Republican governor and set up an intra-party fight…”
“A spokesman for Perdue said in a statement to CNN, “If Brian Kemp fought (Democratic gubernatorial candidate) Stacey Abrams as hard as he fights Perdue and Trump, we wouldn’t be in this mess.”
Well, Stacey Abrams will deal with whatever GOP devil runs against her this time.
…here’s one for you, Bob
thomas massie’s daughter is holding a fucking Uzi in their Xmas card, WTF is wrong with these people?
So, weirdos amass all these guns, get old, die, and the the guns get left to relatives who don’t know what the hell to do with them, so they sell them, or give them away, and now dear sweet grampy’s guns are on the streets, killing people.
There’s only one way to beat these bizarre, barbarous people
