In The Bleak Midwinter

In the Bleak Midwinter” is a poem by the English poet Christina Rossetti, commonly performed as a Christmas carol. The poem was published, under the title “A Christmas Carol“, in the January 1872 issue of Scribner’s Monthly, and was first collected in book form in Goblin Market, The Prince’s Progress and Other Poems (Macmillan, 1875).

In 1906, the composer Gustav Holst composed a setting of Rossetti’s words (titled “Cranham”) in The English Hymnal which is sung throughout the world. An anthem setting by Harold Darke composed in 1909 is also widely performed by choirs and was named the best Christmas carol in a poll of some of the world’s leading choirmasters and choral experts in 2008.

    According to the New York Times, bagel shop owners are facing a shortage of cream cheese, a culinary calamity that could upend how tens of thousands New Yorkers begin their day.

    “This is bad,” Pedro Aguilar, a manager at Pick-a-Bagel, told the paper. “This is very bad.”

    As of Friday afternoon, Pick-a-Bagel predicted its schmear supply would only last until Monday.

    Zabar’s, an upscale deli in Manhattan’s Upper West Side, only had enough cream cheese to last 10 days.

    sooo, maybe the “festival of lights” will be extended 10 days and be renamed the “festival of delights”? perhaps celebrated by schmearing and eating a different flavored bagel each night for the 10 days instead of just lighting candles for 8.

    Right to disconnect
    The second proposal is the provision for disconnecting – prohibiting employers from contacting employees on work-related issues after their day is done. This is a much more interesting (and potentially complex) amendment. The right to disconnect has already gained momentum across Europe, with France, Portugal and Northern Ireland already rolling out said restrictions. And while it sounds like a good idea in theory – in actuality it’s a difficult law to police.
    “I think the right to disconnect is coming from a good place,” Horvat told HRD. “There’s individuals in workplaces being constantly called on after work. And these are not necessarily senior people. Therefore, they’re completing a lot of uncompensated work after hours.

    jack – That is a soothing piece, and, it reminds me that “The Vicar of Dibley” and other BBC Christmas shows are on DVD that I need to get out of seasonal storage.

    This is my “bleak winter” pick-me-up. I like it best with flute and guitar, but I have two hours of different versions of this on my playlist. Christmas letter writing music.

    And all the boys would have their own comb.

    And there’s always Vivaldi’s winter movement from The Four Seasons. On of my crappy season favorites.

  18. I reached out thru a mutual friend to Dole’s 1996 presidential campaign secretary I covered a lot in those days, got this nice response: “told Nelson you’re asking about him. He responds: “What a wonderful and decent man. Tell him that means a lot to me. And I’m not being sarcastic. I know it’s impossible to tell with me.”

  19. Bink – I’ve only tried the one with chives. Another brand I like is Treeline. Again, I’ve only tried the chivey/herby one. I’ve had Violife and Mykonos brands; they were good. I would steer clear of anything branded Daiya.

  22. As a Senate page one of our jobs was to bring a glass of water to senators when they stood up to speak. Dole, who was Minority Leader, told me to bring “Barry” (meaning Goldwater) soda water because he “mixes it with gin”, which was true, kept a flask in his desk.

  28. So, weirdos amass all these guns, get old, die, and the the guns get left to relatives who don’t know what the hell to do with them, so they sell them, or give them away, and now dear sweet grampy’s guns are on the streets, killing people.
