Sunday Serendipity

This jumping swing version of Jingle Bells was originally arranged for the Count Basie Orchestra in 1961. If it doesn’t get you in the holiday mood, well what can I say.

Jingle Bells, performed by Wynton Marsalis and band.

Enjoy, Jack

  1. Church Lady (Dana Carvey) interviews Matt Gaetz (Sarah Sherman), Hunter Biden (David Spade) and Juan Soto (Marcello Hernández).

  2. Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che tackle the week’s biggest news, like the ongoing manhunt for the man who assassinated the CEO of United Healthcare.

  3. sturge, in case you’re on the trail today, a question for our trail etymologist: was that “jumping n jiving” phrase originally “juking n jiving” or “shucking n jiving” and is it from ole timey juke joint jazz jargon?

    BTW, miss you.

  4. a philosophical question for the trail at large

  5. Jeff Bezos (super billionaire and owner of stuff) has the WashPoo editorial staff write (my wild guess) a “shame on you” piece regarding how it seems the U.S. is making light of the murder of another millionaire (maybe billionaire) who gets paid for not spending money on health care for people who pay for it.  Not worth linking to.

Is this one event causing a bit of a change in how the oligarchs are living?  Random bits of anecdotes are floating across the intertubes stating some companies took notice.  People, in the health care pay system, have been told to work at home.  Patients are reporting that recent denials of payment for care have been reversed.  Doctor to payment for care doctors have had teleconferences cancelled and the approval for care show up.  Nothing absolute, but enough smoke can lead to a fire.

Did you know a school shooting took place when mister super important was killed?  In California.  But, that was only commoners, not the important people.

  6. Fun tune Jack. I just posted this on Bluesky, adding the link:

Every Sunday on Trail Mix our DJ whskyjack plays fine tunes. We call it Sunday Serendipity. Today it’s “Jingle Bells” the Count Basie way..

  7. I’ve used the phrase shuck and jive most of my life, but curiosity aroused, I decided to look it up. Shuckin’ and jivin’ (or shucking and jiving) is slang for joking and acting evasively in the presence of an authoritative figure.[1] It usually involves clever lies and impromptu storytelling, to one-up an opponent or avoid punishment. In Ribbin’, Jivin’, and Playin’ the Dozens: The Persistent Dilemma in Our Schools, Herbert L. Foster writes: “Shuckin’ and jivin’ is a verbal and physical technique some blacks use to avoid difficulty, to accommodate some authority figure, and in the extreme, to save a life or to save oneself from being beaten physically or psychologically.”[2][3]
According to the 1994 book by Clarence Major, Juba to Jive: A Dictionary of African-American Slang, “shuck and jive” dates back to the 1870s and was an “originally southern ‘Negro’ expression for clowning, lying, pretense”.[5][6]

  8. Blue Bronc’s final sentence strikes a chord with me.  As I follow the news about the murder of the pharmaceutical executive I wonder about all the other people who have been murdered in just the past few days and wonder why none made headline news.  Well, they are the commoners and no one gives a hoot.

How about the robber in Chicago yesterday.  He pointed his gun at the wrong person who took the gun away from the robber, then killed the robber.  I think that’s newsworthy.  Hopefully the original victim will not become a defendant; that will be determined by race if they happen to differ.

ps -JFC! I’m watching CBS Sunday Morning do a piece on tariffs and the house tRUMPer thinks it’s all a lie because they were “better off under him and had the worst four years under Biden.”  They have a Master’s Degree in Psychology, so I feel like they’re lying to themselves or gaslighting me.

“But in a sign of the potential danger Israel feels from unknown rulers in Damascus, Netanyahu said that he had ordered the military to seize the buffer zone that separates the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights from the rest of Syria.”

“Together with the Defense Minister, and with full backing from the Cabinet, I directed the IDF yesterday to take control of the buffer zone and the dominant positions near it,” he said while visiting the Golan Heights. “We will not allow any hostile force to establish itself on our border.”

  11. thanks, sturge.  I got sidetracked, went down a rabbit hole while searching “juking” and how juke joints got that name.  not being sports literate, I was surprised down that hole to find “juke” as a verb meaning to make a sham move or mislead an opponent.

there’s sure lotta juking going on in d.c. and the media these days.

  12. I’ve been contemplating the various deaths and murders that seem so prevalent and have decided that it all falls within my 10/10/80 idea of civilization.

In any group of any size there are 10% saints, 10% pure evil and the rest of the bunch muddle along somewhere around the spectrum as much as they can.   If you have 100 people, the 10% saints and the 80% muddlers can keep a sharp eye on the evil doers.  The Clantons show up at the OK Corral and the Earp boys take care of the situation.  Maybe an Earp boy dies, and Wyatt lives to an old age to make a silent movie, but it all works out.

When there are 9 billion people, it is much harder to keep tabs on the evil doers.  The lives lost are expendable. The families of the dead mourn, but it is no reason to alert the evening news.  There may be a revenge killing or war here and there but no biggie.

It just may be that Elon et al billionaires will simply buy peace simply because it is being auctioned off to the highest bidder.

With the Earp/Claton feud, it is helpful to remember that Wyatt became part of early Hollywood and his story is the version for almost all those movies which form most of our knowledge of the era.

  14. There are just some things you have to do/not do in certain circumstances to remain a decent person.

  15. Jack, until I saw your 9:29 comment I thought your morning post was your best in a very long time. 😄

  16. The last month of the year tends to be busy. This year it coincides with judge swaps, so the normally lackadaisical judges want to finish out pending cases before the next judges take their places. Shit flows downhill. I’ll be relatively absent for the next couple of weeks. Hold down the fort.
Good to see you again Sturg.
