Judge releases trove of evidence in Trump’s 2020 election interference case | PBS News

WASHINGTON (AP) — The judge overseeing Donald Trump’s 2020 election interference case made public Friday a heavily redacted trove of documents that provide a small glimpse into the evidence prosecutors will present if the case ever goes to trial.
The nearly 1,900 pages of documents collected by special counsel Jack Smith’s team were initially filed under seal to help U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan decide what allegations can proceed to trial following the Supreme Court opinion in July that conferred broad immunity on former presidents for official acts they take in office.
The information that could be seen in the redacted version released Friday appeared to be material that for the most part had already been made public, including screenshots of Trump social media posts about the 2020 election and a transcript of the video statement he made on Jan. 6, 2021 in, which he told the rioters attacking the Capitol to go home, but added: “we love you” and “you’re very special.”
The overwhelming majority of the pages released Friday were whited-out. The redacted files are believed to include things like transcripts of grand jury testimony, which remain under wraps because of grand jury secrecy rules.
Other information visible to the public includes passages from former Vice President Mike Pence’s book, excerpts of testimony provided by several witnesses to the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6 riot and a transcript of Trump’s phone call pressuring Georgia election officials to “find” enough votes to reverse his election loss in the state to Democrat Joe Biden.
Other documents include fundraising emails from Trump’s 2020 campaign and Pence’s letter telling Congress on Jan. 6 that he could not claim “unilateral authority to determine which electoral votes should be counted and which should not.”
The filing was submitted as a series of appendices to a 165-page brief unsealed this month in which prosecutors disclosed new evidence against Trump to support their argument that the former president is not entitled to immunity from prosecution.
Trump’s lawyers objected to the unsealing of the filing so close to next month’s presidential election, but Chutkan on Thursday rejected their bid to postpone the material from becoming public until after the election. She said it would be inappropriate to take the political calendar into account.

    Judge Chutkan:

“If the court withheld information that the public otherwise had a right to access solely because of the potential political consequences of releasing it, that withholding could itself constitute — or appear to be — election interference.”

  3. Democrats need to stop thinking an “October surprise” is going to save us from a second Trump term.

  4. I’m very disappointed in all the redactions in the released evidence. And so much of what’s released was already publicly available. Haven’t seen a nugget so far that can break through the noise, but maybe somebody will find something.

  5. I drove down to South Bend,  Indiana for a concert last night. I saw a few pro-Kamala Harris billboards along the way. I saw this billboard just south of Holland the other day. I guess it was from a campaign that started in 2015.

  6. Tomorrow is the day I marked on my calendar a month ago for the beginning of the bottom dropping out for Trump. Polls in the field starting tomorrow will begin to pick it up.

Three Sundays out is when the remaining soft leaners and undecideds begin to firm up their minds, and my hunch is they don’t want Mr. Chaos for another four years.

All 7 battlegrounds go to Harris.

  7. Taylor Swift endorsed Kamala on 9/10. In her home state Pennsylvania in the following days, from 9/11-9/13, new voter registrations compared to 2020: Voters under 30 were 61% of all new registrations, compared to 45% four years ago; Hispanic women under 30 increased by 188%; and Black women under 30 increased by 137%.

  8. One of the sharpest pundits alive, former Bush campaign media chief Mark Mckinnon, just said it best on CNN:

“I think women are going to save Democracy for us. At the end of the day the number of women crawling over broken glass to shatter the glass ceiling is just going to be historic, especially after seeing Bret Baier’s man-splaining interruptions, something they well recognize. Women are not going to go to sleep on this one, and when we wake up we’re gonna see that women have really made the difference in this election.”

  9. This disaster might very well end up being the deciding factor. Hiring mercenaries for GOTV always leads to this.

Revealed: Trump ground game in key states flagged as potentially fake
Data suggests canvassers linked to Elon Musk’s America Pac falsely claimed to have visited homes of potential voters. Trump may fail to reach thousands of voters in AZ and NV, with roughly 25% of door-knocks done by Elon Musk’s America PAC this week flagged internally as potentially fraudulent, per leaked data and people familiar.

  10. So nice to read Mark M’s words which match my convictions ; women will decide this race if Harris wins.  It’s up to them as a conglomerate sum. They must go vote in unheard of numbers.  I keep worrying about Penna;  I want a bigger lead before election day then I will rest a little bit.
This character Bernie Moreno, with Colombian uber-rich connections, is leading Sherrod Brown by one point today. Brown continues to release ads posing in a group standing behind Trump with Brown’s voiceover saying he works with both parties, and he supports issues backed by either side. This bugs me as being too chummy with the enemy, but Brown does not see Republicans as the enemy at all. Still, to lose to this pseudo-gangster Bernie Moreno would be a huge headache to this area and to the nation. I hope to hell Sherrod Brown knows what he is doing.

  11. “Democrats need to stop thinking an “October surprise” is going to save us from a second Trump term” -Maher

    what Dem was thinking that??

  12. Dems need a sweep or the goopers will just exploit any congressional control to obstruct and fundraise which is all they care about anyway

  13. “what Dem was thinking that??”

    bink,

in re october surprise worry: Hillary for one and yours truly for another.

  14. well yeah agree, patd, but no Dem was waiting for an Oct surprise to help, just worried about one hurting

Bill just trying to hit his content quota

no big deal, just reacting to the thread- bothsidesism makes for shitty comedy

  15. My votes in!  i voted for Kamala and all
Dems down ballot, even though i’m an economic conservative, because republicans need to stop nominating political arsonists for office and the only way they’ll stop is if they fail

Restore political integrity- vote Blue even if you don’t want to 🇺🇸

  16. These guys paid a price for the same sort of shenanigans Elon is now getting himself into..

Right-wing operatives Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman agree to pay up to $1.2 million for misleading 2020 robocalls.. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/right-wing-operatives-jacob-wohl-jack-burkman-agree-pay-12-million-mis-rcna147019

Musk’s PAC is also creating fake websites and sending out fake texts misleading voters. https://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/elon-musks-fake-sites-and-texts-impersonating-the-harris-campaign

  17. they’re so scummy, take nothing for granted

there’s an express philosophy that started in your wonderful American sports leagues and has now permeated broader society:

“if you’re not cheating, you’re not trying”, and all those sports-watching republican dummies take that shit as gospel

    GotV

ok pardon me, that’s all i got, let’s take back Congress, get that Josh Hawley insurrectionist out of government 😜

(hey, re: sports, maybe one day we’ll stop paying billionaires with taxpayer money to turn the best parts of our cities into blighted wastelands surrounding an ugly coliseum, i’ll stop caring then 🫡)

  18. I was afraid my ballot would get thrown out if I left any races unchecked, so I voted Repug in uncontested, local races (and there were many).  Folks are probably afraid to run Dem.  There were a couple of Libertarians running against Repugz, so I threw them a bone.

  19. As one of those decidedly over 50 ladies, I get my ballot tomorrow and will be making sure the 3 household ballots will be in the drop off box on the 20th.  This won’t make a difference in the Presidential in a state like WA, but there are some interesting issues down ballot.  Still, I have hope this is a national phenomenon.  After all, we do have our own song.

  20. 🎵Roe, Roe, Roe the men down 🎶

    🎵Roe, Roe, Roe yer vote…🎶
    (That one was obligatory. )

  21. if Bret Baier had the sense god gave a cantaloupe he would have realized he was going to be facing a PROSECUTOR who had an immense level of actual power behind her, fully earned…,,,.but nooooo he went at her like she was some kinda dumb broad who was going to quail and wither under his manly onslaught   Dumb shit. He had a chance to become “a real little boy”, a NEWSMAN ………and he blew it.

    But hey…..nice house, schmuck.

  22. Sturg – Watch Svengoolie for me.  Stuck watch football teams I don’t care about.

  23. Thanks for reminding me…just walked in from Jersey and had totally forgotten what day it was …….or is……or has been

  24. Adolf has schlong on the brain.  Now he’s going on about Arnold Palmer.    Just in case he’s deflecting from the issues…Project 2025!  He does seem actually lost, though.  Still toxic, but lost.

    https://apnews.com/article/trump-arnold-palmer-closing-arguments-latrobe-pennsylvania-2bea9620c523e531a55259200215284e

“Trump kicks off a Pennsylvania rally by talking about Arnold Palmer’s genitalia”

“When he took the showers with other pros, they came out of there. They said, ‘Oh my God. That’s unbelievable,’” Trump said with a laugh. “I had to say. We have women that are highly sophisticated here, but they used to look at Arnold as a man.”

  25. Here’s a teary…..like Alec Guinness at the end of the bridge on the River Kwai stump realizes what a fool he’s been and is throwing himself on the plunger thus sabotaging the campaign.

    Well…..probably more like Cagney.
    “Top of the world, Ma!”

  26. https://www.thebulwark.com/p/whats-the-deal-with-jd-vance-and-kids-family

“Back in August, he recounted telling his 7-year-old son to “shut the hell up” while he was getting the call from Trump asking him to be his running mate. At a rally in September, he quipped that his younger son was probably off looking for a building to burn as a “chaos agent.” At another rally last week, he made more derogatory remarksabout his children: “I’m surprised we made it this whole time without anyone really complaining. Maybe I can trade you my kids, you could knock some sense into them.”

“SO MUCH OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY is projection, impotence, and a desire to control women: They bear the children and then must manage those “disasters.” As weird as JD Vance’s fixation on women and children may seem, it is in keeping with the GOP platform. It’s a feature, not a bug.”

JD sounds like a peach of a daddy.  Where is he hiding these days?

  27. i said it months ago- there’s a neurological consequence to missing sleep, and the bill’s coming due in trump’s already addled brain

the Kremlin “confirming” that he smuggled med-tech to Russia couldn’t have helped his paranoia, either

He’s afraid to golf, now, also, so he doesn’t have that outlet
