  1. Inflation Reduction Act: Senate inches toward passage after long debate – The Washington Post

Senate Democrats were poised on Sunday to approve a sprawling bill to combat climate change, lower health-care costs, revise the tax code and reduce the deficit, after toiling through the night and into the morning to overcome staunch Republican opposition.
More than eight hours into a slow-moving debate, party lawmakers appeared on track to deliver the political centerpiece of President Biden’s long-stalled economic agenda. The looming vote marked an astonishing coda to months of infighting in the Democratic ranks among liberals pushing ambitious economic reforms and the more cautious centrists.
Dubbed the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, the proposal makes good on Democrats’ years-old pledge to try to reduce seniors’ prescription drug costs. It also authorizes the largest-ever single burst of spending to tackle global warming, totaling roughly $370 billion, with the goal of boosting clean energy and reducing planet-warming emissions by 40 percent by 2030.

Republicans soon began offering a battery of amendments seeking to undermine the bill — or force Democrats to take politically difficult votes. But the GOP repeatedly found itself powerless to block or substantively change the legislation, defeated in its attempts to advance proposals that would toughen border enforcement and limit federal authority to regulate emissions.
The all-night process, known in Senate parlance as a vote-a-rama, otherwise moved at a crawl, daunting Democrats’ hopes of swift final passage. But a vote to approve the bill still seemed likely to occur at some point Sunday.
As debate on the slimmed-down Inflation Reduction Act entered its second day, many Democrats came to accept those compromises as necessary; without them, they may not have a bill at all. But the chief architect of their more expansive original ambitions, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), took to the Senate floor to express his alarm at its narrow scope.

But Democrats ultimately rejected Sanders’s pleas. Many said they did so reluctantly, since they supported his ideas, but they were disinclined to upset the delicate deal struck with Manchin and Sinema.

Bernie’s ego is running away with himself again.  He screwed us over with Hillary and now he’s stabbing Biden in the back.  The old man needs to sit down and shut up.

  3. Words more important now than they were then:

Men cannot live with a lie and not be stained by it,” President Johnson said in introducing the 1965 Voting Rights Act. “The central fact of American civilization…is that freedom and justice and the dignity of man are not just words to us. We believe in them.

  4. Jamie, one way of looking at Bernie spitting on the bill for not going far enough: might help Dems with independent voters who think they’re spending too much

  5. what’s he up to now other than undermining dems’ midterm campaign boosts, election opportunities and hopes?

speaking truth to power before a larger audience than you

  6. i’m trapped in a bizarro-world where Bernie is a villain to supposed liberals and Dick Cheney is their sage

  7. I’ve been down on Bernie since being attacked by the Bros during the Hillary campaign. He just strikes me as a misogynistic fraud with a great far left line as long as he doesn’t actually have to live it.

    Craig

If these attacks from Bernie make it more likely Dems will hold on to Congress that will be a good thing.

Bink, agreeing with a Cheney on one subject does not require supporting their other positions on issues.  It’s called walking and chewing gum while rubbing your head and belly at the same time branch of politics.

  8.  He just strikes me as a misogynistic fraud with a great far left line

…but is he wrong?  We both know he ain’t.  You have a vendetta, that’s fine, vendettas are fun

    ok enjoy✌️

  9. Chuck  put up some really amazing numbers this morning on voter registration in Kansas , Colorado, and Michigan .
Post Roe ,  it seems women are not happy about that one. So , bring on all that  “manly”  talk from CPAC .
I wasn’t happy  about old people  running things when I was 20, I’m even less happy about it at 72.

  10. Maureen Dowd? Piffle.

well my first mention of the old biden deal was “Oh shit, the democrats are going to do it again.”  Well, the gopers and their operatives are gaining ground in their attempts to get “old biden” into play before the mid-terms (with help from media and democrats) and it begins to look as if –oh shit– the Dems are going to do it again.

  11. Bink

It isn’t the line that is wrong, it is the man who is all mouth without any effort to attain the goals he supposedly supports as he elbows his wife in the head in the rush to get to the mike while raking in the wealth. Like it or not, the nature of the party is that you take two steps forward, one step back.  Progress means you keep moving forward.

  12. bink,

passing the bill even with a “minimal” reduction on inflation (as bernie complains) is better than no reduction at all and immensely better than no bill if we’re also left with the tragic loss of major climate control efforts.

  13. The BBB bill was a dead whale  from the start.
This is way better than an empty sardine can we were looking at 2 weeks ago.

  14. CC –
Oh  yeah ,  add in  homeless people , blacks , Jews, brown people, ( except Cubans ) , red people , yellow people, , gays, people who don’t eat meat , and 10 year old school kids who ain’t packin’ 9 MM  pistolas in their book bags.

  15. A word about  Dick Cheney , he helped  spawn this Flying Monkey Airforce.  He proved  you can lie us into war, and really shoot your friend in the face , and then skate away back to Wyoming.

A lesson not lost on  45.

Now the Flying Monkeys are about to take his little girl , to see Margret Hamilton.
    Sage ?
    Not so much .

Senate approves Inflation Reduction Act, clinching long-delayed health and climate bill.
    […]
Dubbed the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, the package would authorize the biggest burst of spending in U.S. history to tackle global warming — roughly $370 billion to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the economy by 40 percent by the end of this decade. The proposal also would make good on Democrats’ years-old pledge to reduce prescription drug costs for the elderly.
In part by tweaking federal tax laws — chiefly to target tax cheats and some billion-dollar companies that now pay nothing to the government — the bill is expected to raise enough money to cover its new spending. Democrats say the measure is also expected to generate an additional $300 billion for reducing projected budget deficits over the next 10 years, though they have not yet furnished a final fiscal analysis of their legislation.[continues]

  17. The insulin cap is fake, the way I read it only applies to insurance so what it is, is a hidden tax on all insurance users. And does nothing to control the out of control price of insulin.   For those without insurance the price can be as much as $1300, maybe more, this wouldn’t have helped them. Pharma isn’t restricted. A 5 pack of Lantus is around $500 in the US across the border in Mexico the same 5 pack is $70. btw I use a pack and a half a month.

  18. As to Bernie, he is the perfect spokesman for the Democratic left. All talk, no accomplishments.

  19. Jack –
The left never really made it back from  Woodstock.  As a political force .

After the Clean Acts  , they folded their tents and went home and took up sex and cocaine as a hobby.

  20. That’s why  we still love big marches.  All show and no go.

But this is  changing  , better to have 200 field workers knocking on doors , than 2,000 in the street .
The bull horn  has been  replaced by the clip board .
Stacey  proved  that  point . As well as Paraclese  2,500 years ago.  He had a bees wax tablet.

  21. It’s like all our skins have been peeled back , and the raw nerves are there for the poking .  The least breeze set’s us off.

  22. Sorry I’m a  Big Momma Thorton  man . I met this woman  at 3 AM  at the Vulcan Gas Company .Straight from  LA to Austin , her side man was so full  of “Bennies” sparks were coming off him.

I was painting  the place  , I mean all of it .

  23. Yes, whoever names bills needs better training in naming stuff. How about naming bills for what they do rather than the effect they hope what the stuff they do will have for a start?
