  2. Ukraine crisis: Russia-Belarus drills to continue beyond schedule; Johnson says Moscow plans biggest war since 1945 – live | World news | The Guardian

Instead of Russia withdrawing troops from Belarus, as originally scheduled, they will apparently be working on new joint military drills with their Belarusian counterparts.

Nato has estimated that there are 30,000 Russian troops in Belarus.

A week today, the Belarusian dictator, Alexander Lukashenko, a firm ally in Putin’s Ukraine policy, is due to hold a constitutional referendum, widely dismissed as illegitimate by western countries, that analysts say is meant to pave the way for him to step back from the presidency at some point but retain overall control.

  3. Ukraine’s president urges sanctions against Russia before a possible invasion, not after – CBS News

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Western leaders gathered at a security conference in Munich on Saturday that he wants sanctions to be imposed against Russia before any potential invasion of his country, not after.

“You’re telling me that it’s 100% that the war will start in a couple of days. Then what [are you] waiting for?” Zelensky said. “We don’t need your sanctions after the bombardment will happen, and after our country will be fired at or after we will have no borders or after we will have no economy or parts of our country will be occupied. Why would we need those sanctions then?”

“So when you’re asking what can be done, well lots of different things can be done. We can even provide you the list. The most important is willingness,” he said.

  4. Happy Sunday morning all.

Thank you, Jack.  This is a lovely piece.  Mozart put all those extra notes to good use on this one.

  5. Unmasked MAGAt  encounter at the pharmacy: She looked at me in my mask, then asked the masked cashier if she wasn’t tired of wearing a mask; they don’t work and vaccines don’t work. She was buying cigarettes and said, “They say this sh/+ burns it out of your lungs. The stuff the Chinese gave to us. We shouldn’t have had the Olympics there. If y’all do, y’all must believe in concentration camps.”

Her clothes were dirty and she was scraping change to buy cigarettes.

The cashier and I had a laugh about Karen MAGAt’s cofeve cure. “Spread the word.”

One at a time, I put that one in drafts because it was a perfect Sunday morning listen for some future date. Maybe next Sunday, maybe not if I run across something I like better.
    The way my mind works.
Drafts are just that, still a work in progress.
Pending is a finished ready to publish post. If I have more than one pending then I will try to leave instructions, if I don’t then pick the one you want to go with. If I complain tell me to STFU.
BTW Pat,  thank you for all the work you do on this blog.
    Jack

If she is worried about China’s reeducation camps, then she has some redeeming qualities. Work with those.

  8. We had dinner last night at Texas de Brazil.  The mall was packed to the rafters with no parking anywhere near entrances. Everyone was masked (mall rules for entry).  For dining, you can remove them once seated.  All the servers were masked.

It would seem the folks of WA have decided vaxxed and masked means get back to normal now.

French President Emmanuel Macron called Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Sunday about the situation in Ukraine in a last-ditch effort to avert a Russian invasion of Ukraine, his office said.

The call, which lasted 105 minutes, came two weeks after Macron went to Moscow to persuade Putin to hold back from sending troops massed on the border into Ukraine.

It represented “the final possible and necessary efforts to avoid a major conflict in Ukraine,” the Elysee said ahead of the conversation.

The call came a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Macron that he would not respond to what he called Russia’s “provocations”, according to the Elysee, and remained open to “dialogue” with Moscow.

But in a speech to the Munich Security Conference he also called on western governments to stop what he said was “a policy of appeasement” towards Putin.

After the conversation with Putin on Sunday, Macron went on to talk with Zelensky on the telephone, the French presidency said.

  10. Sixty years ago today, John Glenn made history

On Feb. 20, 1962, NASA astronaut John Glennlaunched from Florida’s Cape Canaveral inside a tiny capsule named Friendship 7. The Mercury spacecraft circled Earth three times, ultimately splashing down near the Turks and Caicos Islands four hours and 55 minutes after liftoff.

That means it is also the 60th anniversary of the day I met the young man I would marry, annul, marry and divorce.

  11. Jamie – Beautiful pic! Beautiful dress!
Sturg – I thought that was a pic of my dad’s band for a second.
    jack – Lovely selection.

  12. Just finished our 3d day of cleaning out and throwing away the stuff from my uncle’s apartment now that he’s moved to rehab following a couple of seizures. He ain’t going back to independent living. Spent an hour or more with him each day in the dementia zone. One positive thing I’ve noticed and confirmed my observations with one of his sitters is that since he moved and isn’t looping Faux day in and day out he’s much less agitated about, well, everything, and he’s nicer to and more appreciative of people who are helping him.

I did get a gag gift out of the deal that will be going to my Kentucky Republican buddy – a genuine Donald J. Trump glen plaid shirt – made in Bangladesh.  MAGA dontchaknow?

  13. Another Chinese official just seemed to hamstring Putin: (@AmbLiuXiaoMing) Tweeted:

The sovereignty, independence & territorial integrity of all countries should be respected &  safeguarded. This is a basic norm of intl relations that embodies the purposes of #UNCharter. It is also the consistent, principled position of #China. That applies equally to #Ukraine. https://twitter.com/AmbLiuXiaoMing/status/1495563396376322049?s=20&t=3mUsWmG6-jW6a7jLM674Hg

  14. China is patient.  They play the long game.  What do they get out of saying they support the sovereignty of nations 20 years down the road?  Is this just to note that Hong Kong is theirs and the world should mind its own beeswax?

“In Amarillo, TX the high temperature Monday will top out in the low 70s, but quickly drop to the mid 30s just one day later.”

Dallas will see 80 tomorrow. Winter returns mid-week.

“Over the next week more than 70% of Americans in the Lower 48 will experience temperatures below the freezing mark. More than 15 million will endure temperatures below zero.”
