The sky is crying –

https://www.cnn.com/2021/12/06/media/devin-nunes-congress-reliable-sources/index.html

“…Nunes would have ascended to what is widely considered to be the most powerful chairmanship in the House of Representatives.
And all he had to do was stay in Congress.
But Nunes decided to discard the opportunity. Instead, he announced that he had joined Donald Trump’s social media venture, Truth Social, as its CEO. Nunes said he was “humbled and honored” to have been entrusted with the job.“

Orange Adolf’s latest grift. Devin is an idiot for buying into it, but good riddance.

My own little dementia test is if I can remember why I walked into the kitchen at least 3 out of 5 then I’m ok.

Just saw that Fred Hiatt died yesterday. That’s by most accounts a great loss for the Washington Post and its readers. Big shoes to fill.

LOL Sturg. You should market a paper and digital version of that test – sell it on Etsy. An index card with 5 boxes for a check mark or X – so you can remember whether you remembered why you were in the kitchen the last 5 times you forgot why you were in there.

Years ago I knew a couple of Navy veterans of the Pearl Harbor attack.  The big thing for them was they were the start of WWII for the Pacific Fleet.  They were in for the entire war.  They have long since passed.  The WWII vets are pretty much gone now.

All my paternal uncles and one maternal one were South Pacific. My dad, youngest, joined late from working at the shipyard and narrowly missed the big show.  At the cute little military high school i spent 4 yrs at, all the teachers were WWII vets, and some few of them went thru some heavy shit.  They basically would only talk about it if we asked and if we asked they would go into some detail.

And then, of course, there were all the John Wayne movies.

We got WWII by social osmosis.

patd – I think the California redistricting left the SFB water boy without a place to run.  Better to retire now, collect the retirement and go shove his nose in for a last few breaths before joining other idiots selling wacky tobaccy shares on the street corners.

patd…   really great cartoon!
yeah…  WWII vets must be very few at this juncture.  I salute all of them!

That was when everyone worked together for the betterment of this country.  Too bad that republicans… such as Bob Dole…  are also few and far between nowadays.

As to our athletes going to the Olympics.  They all work very hard and sacrifice a lot…  I don’t think they should be penalized for China’s mistakes.  Go USA!

RR – remember that Dole was a SFB supporter and agent for a Russian oligarch .  He left a few of his good principles in the dust.

Good on Biden for taking a hard(er) line on China- they deserve it, and GQPs will have a difficult time with the cognitive dissonance 👍

Nov. 10, 2021 -Dec. 6, 2021
New daily reported cases rose 49%
New daily reported deaths rose 40%
Covid-related hospitalizations rose 4%

Seems the only good news on the virus front is that Omicron may not cause as severe illness as Delta – the bad news is – Delta is surging here now.

People are laughing at Trump’s new company

Is this the revenge of Four Seasons Landscaping?

That was the worn-down venue in Philadelphia where Donald Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, launched the doomed effort to block Joe Biden’s win in the 2020 presidential election. The Giuliani group meant to book the Four Seasons hotel, but somebody goofed and Giuliani ended up spouting his familiar election lies in front of an industrial garage door plastered with Trump signs. The Trump effort to overturn the election never got any more professional than that.

Trump’s new media company, called the Trump Media & Technology Group, may suffer the same amateurish delusions. An “investor presentation” the company recently filed with the Securities and Exchange commission is provoking guffaws among business analysts, with laughable evasions and barely any business strategy. “It does feel like every public action by this company is designed give the impression that it is a joke,” Bloomberg analyst Matt Levine wrote on Dec. 7.

Germ Theory mararches on –

Anthrax arms race helped Europeans evolve against disease

Essentially, Darwin’s law was at work: At the dawn of humans’ emergence in sub-Saharan Africa, hunter-gatherer cultures began to eat more and more ruminants, encountering anthrax more regularly than their primate ancestors. The disease would have wiped out many of these early humans, leaving survivors who had a natural genetic resistance to anthrax—i.e., fewer anthrax receptors.
Next, the lab looked at the gene expressions of different human populations, including those of European, Chinese, Japanese and Yoruba (a sub-Saharan African ethnic group) ancestry.  They found that while all showed a reduction in anthrax receptor expression compared to most mammals, the European group had an even greater reduction—and a reduction in expression meant a reduced risk of the anthrax bacteria taking hold. This follows observations that Europeans seem to be less sensitive to anthrax toxins compared with Africans or Asians.

A great example is  high in the Swiss Alps.  The really old houses have the cows living at ground level , the family living above them on the second floor, and hay and fodder on the third floor.
They slept really close to their animals to keep warm .

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/people-are-laughing-at-trumps-new-company-214853729.html

“The Trump company is a serious venture with real money at stake. TMTG has plans to merge with a special-purpose acquisition company, or SPAC, called Digital World Acquisition Corp., which has raised roughly $1 billion for the deal. Normally, a public company would disclose who its investors are, which DWAC will have to do at some point. For now, however, those investors are anonymous. Two hedge funds that invested in DWAC before knowing of the Trump merger pulled their money in October after news of the deal broke.”

“Donald Trump met with Patrick Orlando, DWAC’s chief executive, early in 2021, before DWAC had raised money as a SPAC and gone public in a September offering. If they discussed the very deal that happened, that would violate the rules for SPACs, which aren’t supposed to have a specific target company in mind when they raise funds. The Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating and could issue fines or sanctions, or find no wrongdoing at all.”
