Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Sunday that the House will vote on a war powers resolution this week to limit President Trump’s military actions against Iran, warning that his order last week for a lethal strike against a top Iranian commander risked a serious escalation of tensions in the Middle East.
In a letter to Democrats, Pelosi (D-Calif.) said the U.S. action that killed Quds Force commander Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani was a “provocative and disproportionate military airstrike targeting high-level Iranian military officials” that endangered members of the U.S. military, diplomats and others.
Pelosi said lawmakers were concerned that the Trump administration acted without consulting Congress and without respect for the constitutional authority Congress has to declare war.
She said the House will introduce and vote on a resolution similar to one that Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) introduced in the Senate last week.

The letter from the speaker late Sunday came hours after Trump claimed that his tweets are sufficient notice to Congress of any possible U.S. military strike on Iran, in an apparent dismissal of his obligations under the War Powers Act of 1973.
“These Media Posts will serve as notification to the United States Congress that should Iran strike any U.S. person or target, the United States will quickly & fully strike back, & perhaps in a disproportionate manner,” Trump tweeted from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fla., late Sunday afternoon. “Such legal notice is not required, but is given nevertheless!”
Trump’s declaration was met with disbelief and ridicule from congressional Democrats, who called on the president to respect the role of the legislative branch in authorizing new military action abroad.
The War Powers Act mandates that the president report to lawmakers within 48 hours of introducing military forces into armed conflict abroad. Such notifications generally detail an administration’s justification for U.S. intervention, as well as the constitutional and legislative rationale used by the administration to send troops. It may also include how long the involvement could last.
On Saturday, the White House delivered a formal notification to Congress of the strike that killed Soleimani, according to a senior Democratic aide and another official familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity ahead of the notification.
Pelosi criticized that document, which was entirely classified. “This document prompts serious and urgent questions about the timing, manner and justification of the Administration’s decision to engage in hostilities against Iran,” she said in a statement late Saturday.

Pogo… yeah… the Patriots O line was pretty bad this season. And no doubt they didn’t have much in the way of receivers for Brady to throw to. But… after watching all 17 games… I can say that Brady was an average quarterback at best this year. But with that said…. I started watching football in 1968. The Patriots were a joke at that time ( it was a good year if they won 3 games). All I ever wanted was to see them win one Super Bowl. The last 20 years have been magical. If it’s over… I am eternally grateful to the Krafts, Belichick, Brady, and all the many good players that have been on the team during this run.
This is the most ridiculous and indecipherable approach to foreign policy I have witnessed in my umpty-ump years watching foreign policy evolve – from the arguments over the shape of the negotiating table for the Vietnam war through two really stupid wars in Iraq, and not to mention Afghanistan. And now telegraphing what is almost universally regarded as war crimes in retaliation for potential retaliatory strikes by Iran in response to our killing in essence their top general. My guess is that we will soon lean whether Iran has sleeper cells in the US with the capability to inflict death and damage. If I were a betting man I would bet they have such capabilities.
Renee, there is no doubt that Brady wasn’t quite what he was last year, but a mediocre O line can certainly make a stellar quarterback, who because of age might not be as mobile as in the past (think Joe Namath in his latter years) look mediocre as well. I hope Bob and Bill fill in the weak spots in the O line and give Brady a couple of stellar receivers (there are a slew coming into the league this year) to throw to to give them one more chance to look like the dynasty isn’t quite done yet.
War powers info needed. Not that they’ll lie about it or anything.

Several people whose careers involve defending whistle blowers and violators of military orders are posting steps to take if you are accused. They may be getting a lot of business.
I’m wondering if there will be an official notification when it is okay to violate Godwin’s Law. I think it may be okay soon.
I think there is a caveat to the Nixon theory. You can’t use it all the time. If your enemies think you are insane because of righteous anger they will deal with you differently then if you act that way all the time.
I lived behind a vineyard ow.ned by a total ass from upstate NY. They violated a lot of regulations converting an apple orchard to vineyard. The first winter the single road going in and out from our house began to disintegrate.
For whatever reasons I decided the vineyard was responsible. I called everyone I could think of and started yelling– “the road was falling apart and we would be unable to get in or out.” I called the owners at their home in upstate NY. The upshot was the vineyard fixed the road and the drainage issues that caused the problem. Later I learned the problems were caused by the County. But I didn’t care. The problem got fixed. But I don’t think I could do that again.

And, he sounds like he is really off into his alternate universe.
The mustached white shark surfaces:
John Bolton willing to testify
“During the present impeachment controversy, I have tried to meet my obligations both as a citizen and as former National Security Advisor. My colleague, Dr. Charles Kupperman, faced with a House committee subpoena on the one hand, and a Presidential directive not to testify on the other, sought final resolution of this Constitutional conflict from the Federal judiciary. After my counsel informed the House committee that I too would seek judicial resolution of these Constitutional issues, the committee chose not to subpoena me. Nevertheless, I publicly resolved to be guided by the outcome of Dr. Kupperman’s case.
But both the President and the House of Representatives opposed his effort on jurisdictional grounds, and each other on the merits. The House committee went so far as to withdraw its subpoena to Dr. Kupperman in a deliberate attempt to moot the case and deprive the court of jurisdiction. Judge Richard Leon, in a carefully reasoned opinion on December 30, held Dr. Kupperman’s case to be moot, and therefore did not reach the separation-of-powers issues.
The House has concluded its Constitutional responsibility by adopting Articles of Impeachment related to the Ukraine matter. It now falls to the Senate to fulfill its Constitutional obligation to try impeachments, and it does not appear possible that a final judicial resolution of the still-unanswered Constitutional questions can be obtained before the Senate acts.
Accordingly, since my testimony is once again at issue, I have had to resolve the serious competing issues as best I could, based on careful consideration and study. I have concluded that, if the Senate issues a subpoena for my testimony, I am prepared to testify.”

BAGHDAD, Jan 6 (Reuters) – The United States military wrote to Iraq on Monday saying it would pull out of the country and would be repositioning forces over the next few days and weeks, a letter seen by Reuters showed.
It was not immediately clear if all roughly 5,000 U.S. troops would leave Iraq.
Several helicopters could be heard flying over Baghdad on Monday night. It was not immediately clear if this was a related development. The letter said coalition forces would be using helicopters to evacuate.
“Sir, in deference to the sovereignty of the Republic of Iraq, and as requested by the Iraqi Parliament and the Prime Minister, CJTF-OIR will be repositioning forces over the course of the coming days and weeks to prepare for onward movement,” read the letter.
It was signed by United States Marine Corps Brigadier General William H. Seely III, commanding general of Task Force Iraq, the U.S.-led military coalition against Islamic State
The authenticity of the letter, which was addressed to the Iraqi defense ministry’s Combined Joint Operations Baghdad, was confirmed to Reuters independently by an Iraqi military source.
“We respect your sovereign decision to order our departure,” it said.
In Washington, a Pentagon spokesman said he could not immediately confirm its authenticity.
The letter said: “During this time, there will be an increase in helicopter travel in and around the International Zone (IZ) of Baghdad.”
The International Zone is the formal name of Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone which houses government buildings and foreign missions.

If I was the CEO of the Pats I’s say get a top notch rookie QB or a seasoned mid career vet to be in the wings until Tom needs a breather or gets injured and transition to the new franchise player.
And so much for Pompous’ bluster about not leaving Iraq – just watching to see what happens. It is dangerous to try and conflate State and Defense as if State can call the Defense shots.

excerpt from lizzie’s response to supporters re endorsement:
Julián Castro is a powerfully important voice for our country.
As a presidential candidate, he proposed bold and progressive policies — including reforming our immigration laws, fixing our broken criminal justice system, improving access to child care, and protecting the rights and equality of people with disabilities.
He’s made the Democratic primary more substantive, and his vision was always clear: Lift up the voices of the people who are struggling the most, and fight for deep, systemic reform.
I’m deeply grateful to receive his endorsement today. It is an honor to fight side by side with Julián Castro for the big, structural change we need. [continues]
