Silence Of The Lambs

No Republicans at Thursday’s DOJ briefing claim they saw proof of Trump’s “spygate” fantasy. None dispute it either.

  1. Isa:65:25: The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent’s meat…..

  2. from npr:
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told NPR in an interview that he continues to support the Mueller Russia investigation — and that nothing in Thursday’s hotly anticipated secret briefing on the Russia probe to congressional leaders changed his mind.

“The two investigations going on that I think will give us the answers to the questions that you raise — the [inspector general] investigation in the Justice Department and the Mueller investigation,” McConnell said. “I support both of them, and I don’t really have anything to add to this subject based upon the Gang of Eight briefing that we had today, which was classified.”
McConnell spoke with NPR immediately following a classified intelligence briefing from law enforcement and intelligence officials. The Gang of Eight — a bipartisan group of the four top congressional leaders and the four bipartisan leaders of the House and Senate intelligence committees — met with representatives from the Department of Justice and the FBI to discuss materials regarding a confidential FBI source who met with Trump campaign officials.

McConnell has remained the most prominent congressional Republican to defend Mueller and his investigation amid a concerted effort by Trump and conservative supporters to discredit that investigation.

  3. Some Gooperz are stupid sheep who follow, but most are aware of the truth.  Most are complicit. Aiding and abetting.

  4. Two meetings, though. That speaks volumes.

Clearly,  the Nunes/Russian meeting was a strategy meeting to get their talking points/lies ready for the Sunday shows aka political sermons, right?

Sunlight, sunlight, sunlight!  (And maybe a magnifying glass.)

  5. Today is the Naval Academy class of 2018 graduation day.  It is also the day the US Navy has SFB spewing word salad as the key speaker.  And, he gets a fly over by the US Navy Blue Angels, from which he will no doubt get a little hard on for the military parade. Bah.  He is going to contaminate the US Naval Academy grounds.  I hope they don’t let him near John Paul Jones.

For fun, several times the Blue Angels F/A 18 Hornets fly directly over me at seven hundred miles per hour.  They use the street to line up to the open field of the stadium which is about six miles north of me.  The streets on either side are on the stands so they do not use those.

  6. BB – Maybe look at it as an aerial, one-fingered salute.       Cool to know how they line up those flyovers.

I’m sad that he’s getting his military parade this fall.   Competing  protests?    How do you protest without disrespecting the folks serving in the military being forced to perform for that lemon merengue-haired, ball of ego? (Have you noticed that his hair is now the same color as the yellow chairs? Weirdest camo I’ve ever seen.)

  7. Please don’t use the word sp*gate any more in discourse……use of the word supports his attempt to create a “gate”  he can exploit.

the only gate is the one all the Russians came in thru.

Yes, I saw someone say that on TV, but it makes total sense and I concur.

  8. Just saw the schedule; Ceremony starts at 1000, Blue Angels start at 1004, SFB ruins the day at 1022 0945 as his roadblock hits Annapolis and after the Blue Angels and an undersecretary speech, he produces garbled nonsensical crap which the media attempts to make sound like logical talk.  And, it is all over at 1245.

  9. tweet from pbs’ lisa Desjardins  speaking of sen. lindsey
GRAHAM to me: “why he (the president’s lawyer – Emmet Flood) is there (in these classified briefings), I don’t know.  That is a bit  odd. If the president’s lawyer is there, I’d like to know why.”

also on twit lawyer being present at mtg from  wapo:
House Intelligence Committee ranking Democrat Adam B. Schiff (Calif.) said in a statement that Flood’s “involvement — in any capacity — was entirely improper, and I made this clear to him.”

“His presence only underscores what Rudy Giuliani said: the President’s legal team expects to use information gleaned improperly from the Justice Department or the President’s allies in Congress to their legal advantage,” Schiff said. Giuliani joined the president’s legal team last month.

    and from the hill:
Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), the ranking member on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said in a tweet that Emmet Flood, a White House lawyer handling the Russia investigation, had “no business showing up to a classified intelligence briefing.”
Warner also criticized White House chief of staff John Kelly for making an appearance at the meeting he attended. Both meetings were convened to discuss the FBI’s use of a top-secret informant in the early days of a counterintelligence probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
“For the record, the President’s Chief of Staff and his attorney in an ongoing criminal investigation into the President’s campaign have no business showing up to a classified intelligence briefing,” Warner tweeted.

  10. BiD is right more sheep than lamb…and quite possibly more goat than sheep.

What’s he gonna do when he finds out the spy is Ivanka trying to stay out of jail

  11. Maybe Trump has something on all of the goops in Congress – that would explain a lot

  12. kgc, more than likely some of those critters are recipients of campaign funds of suspicious nature just as he is and they know he knows and their mutual sugar daddy is the one holding the reins.

  13. something really really big that nunes has either to hide or has been promised (or both) for him to do/say so many questionable things.

can’t be an appointment requiring senate confirmation cause no way would he get it.  must be a whole lot of money or a whole lot of fear.

  14. flood wearing his John Dean glasses hoped to see secret print in the doj briefing known as the ‘potus pleasing secret meetings’ on the hill.  trump continues to look and act the part of the criminal by having kelly and flood crash the separation of powers line.  Most damaging and expensive prez ever!

I sent a congratulatory note my Senator Udall…he really pissed-off pompeo yesterday.  sos pompeo’s n.korea failure is only surpassed by his allowing poor Taiwan to disappear at the hand of the xi.

sellout pompeo unable to get-out his fat, stubby fingers out-of-the chinese finger trap.

  15. Trying to catch-up on the trail as my sis from PA was in town.   I had to break bread with the trump supporters…a miserable lot.   trump is costing them a bundle, but they will dig-in to hide their big mistake of voting for a joke.  Price of gas is starting to affect them as it does most rural humans.   Shortages, bum health care…even bush sent them $600. during his reign.  trump is just draining.

  16. Sturg, you are correct about sp*gate.

We all understand that *gate is in the national vocabulary thanks to Nixon and company. This is crude and/but it is not intended to offend women but to shove SFB’s meanness and crudity back in his face. And it provides moms and grandmothers the opportunity to educate their girls, and for dads and grandfathers to educate their boys.

I suggest we start citing PussyGate as those events that will immortalize SFB in our national psyche. Everything we have from Ms Clifford forward to include his climbing off the bus and saying his unquotable words. Moms and dads know what he said and why it’s up to them to explain why it’s wrong for any person in their family to utter that special word with such a crude intent.

  17. Pompeo desperately needs quality/qualified foreign service officers as ambassadors in these vital areas/countries.

  18. Flatus…  PussyGate…  Bravo!  It doesn’t offend me at all… as it reflects exactly what trumpty dumpty is…

BlondeW…   I break bread every Sunday morning with a Trump supporter.  But you know how it goes…  you can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your family.  He’s actually the only one out of 7 of us and we try to not talk politics out of friendship.  But every now and then something just kinda squeaks out.

  19. As weinstein perp walks,  the gov of Missouri starts a six-figure tv ad campaign to combat impeachment for crimes.

The TV spot takes a page out of President Donald Trump’s crisis playbook, suggesting Greitens’ scandals stem from plots against him by the media and his political enemies.
As Greitens fights for his political life, he also faces a legal battle, including one felony charge of computer tampering for his campaign’s use of a nonprofit donor list. Prosecutors recently withdrew a felony invasion of privacy charge stemming from an explicit photo Greitens allegedly took of a woman with whom he had an affair, but a recently named special prosecutor will decide whether to refile it.
Greitens has admitted to the affair but denied any wrongdoing, dismissing the investigations into his conduct as a “political witch hunt.”

  20. trump has sacked the state department and as Udall stated this morning?  trump negotiates everything as a real estate deal.  Diplomacy is dead.  pompeo won over haley, but he may not win the war.  haley had a big interview on cbs.  She is looking to 2020, just like pompeo.   At least pompeo wasn’t called the political dummy like pence.  I am sure most of the repug party is eyeing 2020.  trump’s campaign and the rnc are all staffed with former WH members who are now thieves, crooks, the indicted and losers.  The push today is to stop the blue wave and impeachment potential.

As for my family trump supporters?  I doubt they will vote ‘trump’ in the midterms.  trump doesn’t have that much power.

  21. How about those tax cuts for stimulating the US economy and bringing jobs and plants back to the US?  Harley-davidson lay-offs US workers, moves a plant to Thailand and gives dividend increase.  MAGA?

Harley-Davidson in January announced it would slash 800 jobs upon closing the Kansas City plant by fall 2019.  Amid the Kansas City closure, 450 full-time, casual and contractor positions will be added at the Springettsbury Township facility in York County, yielding a loss of 350 jobs overall. Days after it announced the plant closure and cuts, the company announced a $696 million dividend increase and stock buyback plan. That came on the heels of the company sharing plans to open a plant in Thailand and taking a corporate tax cut from 35 percent to 21 percent.

  22. Gate-gate Gate………the way cc used it in the post, the word itself was necessary to use……but when in the general conversations you can deny the perpetrators the luxury of “naming” something, and framing the issue you’re ahead of it somewhat.  Welfare Queens, Welfare Caddilacs, Willie Hortons, take a knee, both sides are the same, good guys with a gun, guns don’t kill people, Socialism!……on and on…….they do love to cast asparagus…..

  23. BW, Haley wasn’t my choice to be governor. The tragedy in Charleston changed my mind. She immediately led the people of our state into mourning while simultaneously ordering and monitoring the successful effort to capture the miserable perp.

She presided over the de-Confederation of South Carolina. The Battle Flags and Stars and Bars came down from public buildings and spaces. Even staunch supporters of past events removed the flags from their business premises.

In spite of the cruelty of the crime, this cleansing of spaces and attitudes would not have happened absent Haley’s leadership.

  24. In one of Elmore Leonard’s books, he had one of his characters continually saying, “Give it a name!” In the sense of  “I’m in total agreement with you”  or “I heard THAT” .

  25. comcast rich from trump’s tax cuts, goes after fox bumping disney aside.   Big money, streaming, movies and gaming.  trump’s network and friend rupert gets big bump from trump for fox’s sport & entertainment network.  He is keeping the news division.  The more liberal son was to get disney and stay out of the news.  BUT, that is changing with the comcast bid.  Tax cuts at work.   Most civilians are having a hard time finding the pennies for the increase in gas prices as the tax cuts never produced anything for the little guy.  Another broken promise by trump…the biggest being that Mexico was going to pay for the wall.

  26. She handled the hurricane evacuation remarkably well also.  Just shows that some people can be capable of crisis management and good accomplishments but still wind up being generally wrong-headed.

and she stuck it to that mudflow creep in the WH who called her confused….that was good…..but then she’ll turn around, and back to GOPism.

  27. haley and pompeo are both tea partiers…not my cup of tea, at all.   I am voting dem going forward as the gop is complicit and corrupt on so many levels.   I would never vote tea party under any circumstances even if I agreed with one or two positions an individual may hold.

  28. Sturg, I agree. Now, how do we get people thinking in terms where they don’t need others to provide adjectives and nouns for them?

  29. Our primary is over June 5th…young, surfing jackass — Bill McCamley’s hammer time ad here in New Mexico.

  30. Holy gofers.   gop garett and wife, Flanna, get private servants…not public servants in staff.

POLITICO has spoken with four former staffers who detailed a deeply dysfunctional office in which the congressman and his wife, Flanna, often demanded that staff run personal errands outside their typical congressional duties. The couple called on staff to pick up groceries, chauffeur Garrett’s daughters to and from his Virginia district, and fetch clothes that the congressman forgot at his Washington apartment. They were even expected to watch and clean up after Sophie, their Jack Russell-Pomeranian mix, the aides said.

The staffers said they feared that if they refused Garrett‘s or his wife’s orders — both were known for explosive tempers — they would struggle to advance in their careers. It wasn’t just full-time staff: many of the allegedly inappropriate requests were made of interns, the former aides said.

  31. BW, this is from a much longer article in the June 2017 government.com magazine:

It isn’t always easy to tell a change in core beliefs from a change in image. Nikki Haley of South Carolina reflects that ambiguity. A member of the Tea Party Class of 2010, she staked out a position in her first gubernatorial term as a conservative loose cannon, more interested in scoring political points against her personal enemies in the legislature than in pursuing any particular policy agenda. She handed out “report cards” to individual lawmakers and told visitors to the legislative chambers to “take a good shower” when they left the Capitol. The state House speaker, a fellow Republican, accused her of having a penchant for “middle-school insults.”

So it’s hard to imagine the Nikki Haley who took office in 2011 being chosen as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, even by a president as unorthodox as Donald Trump. But it wasn’t the Haley of 2011 who got the U.N. job. It was the seasoned second-term governor who had developed a reputation across the country as a voice of moderation and compassion in tragic times. When nine African-Americans were murdered by a white supremacist in Charleston in 2015, Haley responded with symbolic but powerful gestures of sympathy, ordering the removal of the Confederate flag from the state Capitol grounds and mandating that state police wear body cameras as a check against discriminatory conduct.

“Everything I’ve done leading up to this point,” Haley said in her second term, “has always been about diplomacy.” That wasn’t remotely true, but it was emblematic of the public figure she had become. In the months before she left office, Haley was still quarreling with legislators, including some whom she tried to oust in primaries in 2016. But it wasn’t her streak of residual pettiness that had come to define her in the public mind; it was the statesmanlike qualities she had managed to exhibit in moments when it counted.

  32. SFB is plenty scary but worse are all the people who happily enable him.  The maroon from Modesto being a perfect example.   He is a big fisherman — yet he supports SFB thinks he is great and we are all in for a big surprise.  An idiot.

  33. Haley is the only person in the trump group who demonstrates mental and ethical strength. I disagree with her on a wide variety of issues, but I respect her.

  34. 2nd potato harvest of the Adirondack blues.  Don’t panic, they’re organic.

  35. The Harvey Weinstein defense indicates why he got in trouble in the first place – it is bad behavior but it is also against the law.

  36. sj…   I found an image that Rick took of my booth a couple years ago…

  37. Spewgate seems to have been another shiny tempest-in-teapot dome-style diversion. It also added the opportunity to weaken the DoJ/FBI policies, by sharing secret info on ongoing investigations with outsiders. If we can dump that policy so easily, why not dump the policy of not indicting sitting presidents ?

  38. Nice space, RR.

The football enablers punt on protestNFL keeps their lucrative tax cuts and give trump some anthem respect.
The revision allows players who would not wish to stand to remain in the locker room. Also under the revision, each franchise will have the power to issue their own policies, which could include fines for players protesting the anthem, under the conduct detrimental provision of the league’s personal conduct policy.
The league also now has the power to fine any franchise that has representatives who do not stand or “show respect” while present on the sideline for the anthem.

  39. Spewgate is my term for the series of obstructions, obfuscations, and RED herrings that the pussypinching, deadbeat antichrist has been vomiting up.

  40. I doubt if enough money will trickle-down to the voters by November.  Tax cuts for big business, the uber wealthy and 1% have caused the debt to increase by 1.5 trillion for tax cuts, we borrow more $ from china and nothing is being done for our infrastructure or phone systems.   The gop promise of growth by tax cut?  A ruse played on the citizens.  Inflation, low wages, shortages.   The repugs in control of the economy.  How about that keystone pipeline!

  41. I forgot to add the NFL thing is for the November election.  To stop the blue wave via hate for protesting players of color who make so much money.  I know, I heard it from the trump supporter in my family last year.  It really gets the racist juices flowing.  trump used it during the Alabama special election last year.   Whatever they can do to stop the sane and civil from getting back into office.

  42. I admire Haley for taking an irrelevant job working for the most corrupt administration in 100 years to advance her career.  What grit!

  43. Can’t find the link out there yet, but Moses Farrow has written a defense of Woody Allen which is quite compelling.

At the time of the alleged incident, Moses was 14, Dylan was 7, and Ronan was 4.

Moses is now a licensed family therapist in NY.

  44. Very pretty, RebelliousRenee. Thank Rick for taking it 🙂

My maternal Grandmother knitted socks for all of her 13 grandchildren & expanding list of great-grand kids up until her death at 93 yrs 11 months. We each got a pair of socks for Christmas. Some of the colors were interesting (she went through an ombre phase during the early ’80s) but each was unique & made with love. How many grandkids today receive gifts like this? May sound corny but little stuff like that kept families together & on the straight path. There was love, there was putting out & caring for each other. I get goopy about people who work with yarn but it all goes back to my Gram. She once tried to talk me into crocheting an Elvis doll for her Rebekah Lodge to auction. I was flattered but said no, I could not do the King justice & by golly Elvis had to look like Elvis. Silly stuff but I miss her & that package under the Christmas tree each year with my name on it. What color socks would I get this year?

  45. Blonde Wino,

Those potatoes are gorgeous. Seriously pretty. Are they waxy or dry texture?

Israeli Intelligence Firm’s Election-Meddling Analysis Comes Under Mueller’s Scrutiny

Psy-Group presentation outlines ways Trump campaign was helped by fake social media accounts

WASHINGTON—Special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigators have obtained a presentation prepared by an Israel-based private intelligence firm that outlines ways in which Donald Trump’s 2016 election was helped by fake news and fake social-media accounts, according to people familiar with the presentation and documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.
    [….continues…]

  47. Looks like Weird Al also knew the Col……..or at least had a passing acquaintance……..

  48. I’m a multi-gun owner and was a Publix shopper. I sure as hell don’t support the modern NRA nor its political agenda. Publix has been a very foolish corporation in donating to private causes; the sign in their local store touts their financial support of local schools–that’s something I can support. Monday I shall have a chat with their store manager expressing my displeasure.

  49. continued:

Mr. Mueller’s interest in the presentation suggests his investigation is focusing on the role of social-media manipulation during the 2016 campaign. Intelligence officials have said that cyber-influence campaigns, sometimes covertly sponsored by foreign governments, are expected to become a major part of political campaigning in the coming years.

The presentation consists of nine slides and was prepared by the Psy-Group, a firm that boasts of ties to elite Israeli intelligence agencies. It isn’t clear who received the Psy-Group presentation, but it appears to have been created sometime after the 2016 election.

People familiar with the presentation describe it as an internal analysis drawn up by the firm to drum up U.S. political business—saying that it was essentially used as marketing material for the firm’s operation and analytical capabilities. It also represents a “proof of concept” of how a firm like Psy-Group would have manipulated the 2016 campaign as well as future campaigns, people said.

It is unclear how much of the presentation consists of the firm’s analysis of online activity during the campaign and how much is a hypothetical pitch.

Marc Mukasey, a lawyer for Mr. Zamel, said the presentation copy that Mr. Mueller has obtained was a “sample type analysis of what they could do.”

A spokesman for Mr. Mueller declined to comment.

The presentation outlines the ways in which social media “bots” and fake online content were used to help energize voters supportive of Mr. Trump. One slide entitled “Trump Campaign Components” outlines a timeline where “fake news sites/avatars/content” were created during the early part of the election year and then leveraged to spread “uncertainty” by midyear. The final stage was “using fake bots to react to real life situations & further polarize the TA,” or target audience, the slide says.

Another slide says the firm identified 140 pro-Trump websites linked to a man in Macedonia. The websites “had American-sounding domain names such as WorldPoliticus.com” and “published aggressively pro-Trump content aimed at conservatives and Trump supporters in the USA.” WorldPoliticus.com is no longer active.

A person familiar with Trump campaign’s operations said it has “absolutely no knowledge of what this firm was referring to” in the slideshow.

Another slide outlines a Facebook strategy where fake online profiles or “avatars” engage real people online and encourage them to share content. The result is a “multiplier effect with mass people spreading lies,” the slide says.

In September, Facebook disclosed that it identified about 500 “inauthentic” accounts with ties to Russia that bought $100,000 worth of ads during a two-year period encompassing the presidential campaign.

Mr. Mueller is investigating whether anyone in the Trump campaign colluded in Russian efforts to interfere in the election. Moscow has denied meddling and Mr. Trump has denied any collusion by his campaign.

The Psy-Group’s founder, Joel Zamel, is under scrutiny from U.S. investigators because of his close relationship with the government of the United Arab Emirates and his involvement in a meeting with Mr. Trump’s eldest son shortly before election day, the Journal has reported.

Mr. Zamel met with Donald Trump Jr. at Trump Tower in the weeks before the 2016 election along with George Nader, a top adviser to the crown prince of the United Arab Emirates, to discuss an offer to help boost the campaign, according to people familiar with the matter. Erik Prince, a U.S. defense contractor who specializes in the Middle East and had close ties to the campaign, attended the meeting, the Journal previously reported. People involved in the meeting say nothing came of it and the Psy-Group didn’t perform any work for the Trump campaign.

A lawyer for Mr. Trump Jr. said Messrs. Zamel and Nader had pitched his client on “a social media platform or marketing strategy” and that “he was not interested and that was the end of it.”

The presentation reviewed by the Journal wasn’t related to the Trump Tower meeting nor was it prepared for Mr. Nader, said Mr. Mukasey, Mr. Zamel’s attorney.

Mr. Mueller has been investigating Mr. Zamel’s work and has interviewed Mr. Zamel about his business relationship with Mr. Nader, according to people familiar with the matter. Mr. Mukaseyhas said investigators have told him his client isn’t a target of the probe. A subpoena concerning Mr. Zamel’s work, but not issued to Mr. Zamel, was reviewed by the Journal.

Mr. Nader has been cooperating with investigators since January, when investigators stopped him at Dulles Airport and served him with a subpoena.

A lawyer for Mr. Nader said his client has “fully cooperated with the special counsel’s investigation and will continue to do so.” The lawyer declined to answer further questions.

The Psy-Group was formed by Mr. Zamel, the son of an Australian mining magnate who moved to Israel to study counterterrorism. There, Mr. Zamel founded several companies beginning in 2010 and became increasingly close to the government of the U.A.E., the Journal has previously reported. One of his companies, Wikistrat, did war games and analysis for the U.A.E. in 2014 and say he was close to the national security adviser there, according to people familiar with Mr. Zamel.

People familiar with the Psy-Group’s operations say it provided intelligence services for political and corporate clients.

After the 2016 election, the firm started to pitch for business in the U.S., including for the 2018 midterms. As part of its pitch to potential political clients, the Psy-Group said it had the capability of leveraging fake social-media accounts, which they call avatars, on behalf of political campaigns.

“Psy excels at the use of online avatars that appear natural, unbiased and object. These avatars are highly effective at directing political messaging to target audiences,” marketing materials reviewed by the Journal say. These fake social accounts could be used for “narrative warfare” or to “echo campaign messaging,” the firm said.

No political entity has made any payments to the Psy-Group since 2015, according to Federal Election Commission records. The participation of foreign firms or individuals in U.S. elections is tightly controlled.

  50. Bink,
I admire Haley for moving to the City and becoming our de facto Secretary of State. I wonder how many times she called DC asking for clarification of ‘our’ position prior to forcefully stating ‘our’ policy before the Security Council. When it became time to send SC national guard troops to the Middle East, she showed no favoritism to her husband–he deployed with his medical unit.

Here’s her biography from years ago when she was running for the repug nomination for governor. I didn’t vote for her.

  51. Sturg, I was surprised at how many GIs read comic books as a means of escapism.

  52. I have returned semi-repaired and Pacific Grove groovy.  I hope you never need it, but morphine is a very kind drug when you do.  🙂

  53. Jamie!
Welcome home—we’ve been so worried just hearing a cryptic snippet that you had tripped beneath the hind end of a sea-horse. Is there anything that we can send you? Besides our best good wishes??

It is good hearing that you are safe at home; go rest, please.

Massive sciatica attack due to non existent disc and spasm of old back injury resulting in a right leg mounting a full protest strike with refusal to function.  Spent two nights in hospital getting acquainted with my old friend morphine.  We hadn’t hung out together for over 30 years.  The nice doctors got the inflamed temporarily quieted into submission enough to get home and the joys of steroids once the holiday is over if my doctor ever returns to her office.

All is well.  Pacific Grove worked it’s magic.  I can smile even with the knowledge that the President is a hideous human being inflicting massive damage on a country I love, but I shall leave the disposition up to Karma and Nemesis to catch up with him in some appropriately divine judgement.

  55. Welcome back, Jamie ! I missed you.

Yes, G!D bless morphine for pain, and ice for inflammation, too.

  56. Jamie!  there’s no place like home to heal the wounded warrior.

welcome back and a mighty welcome to whatever tales of the better part of your adventures you wish to share.

    the guardian:

FBI says Russians hacked hundreds of thousands of home and office routers

Agency urges router owners to reset them and download updates amid fears hackers could collect data

The FBI warned on Friday that Russian computer hackers had compromised hundreds of thousands of home and office routers and could collect user information or shut down network traffic.

The US law enforcement agency urged the owners of many brands of routers to turn them off and on again and download updates from the manufacturer to protect themselves.

The warning followed a court order Wednesday that allowed the FBI to seize a website that the hackers planned to use to give instructions to the routers. Though that cut off malicious communications, it still left the routers infected, and Friday’s warning was aimed at cleaning up those machines
    […]
An FBI official told Reuters that the kinds of devices known to be affected by the hack were purchased by users at electronic stores or online.

However, the FBI was not ruling out the possibility that routers provided to customers by internet service companies could also be affected, the official added.

“The size and scope of the infrastructure by VPNFilter malware is significant,” the FBI said, adding that it was capable of rendering peoples’ routers “inoperable”.

It said the malware was hard to detect, due to encryption and other tactics.

The FBI urged people to reboot their devices to temporarily disrupt the malware and help identify infected devices.

People should also consider disabling remote-management settings, changing passwords and upgrading to the latest firmware.
