Sunday Serendipity

By Jace, a Trail Mix Contributor

Wikipedia tells us that there are some twenty thousand musical works inspired or influenced by the works of William Shakespeare. I think that may be a conservative number. I thought it might be fun to spend a few Sundays listening to some of those works.

A beautiful setting of  ‘Who Is Sylvia’ by Franz Schubert.

As always enjoy the music but most especially enjoy your day!

  1. ny times:

    [….]

In brief remarks, Mr. Carter and Mr. Clinton praised Americans’ volunteerism. Mr. Obama thanked both members of the Bush family, who live in Texas, and spoke about the important work of citizens.
“Americans step up,” Mr. Obama said. “And as heartbreaking as the tragedies that took place here in Texas, and in Florida, in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands have been, what we’ve also seen is the spirit of America at its best.”
    [….]
The presidents have a history of coming together after natural disasters.
Mr. Clinton teamed up with the elder Mr. Bush to raise money after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in 2005. When he was commander in chief, Mr. Obama asked Mr. Clinton and George W. Bush to lead an effort to help Haiti after an earthquake in 2010.
Donations to the current campaign, One America Appeal, will help victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, Hurricane Irma in Florida and Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands, according to the campaign’s website. It has raised more than $31 million, officials announced on Saturday.

  2. an alternative for those thinking of immigrating elsewhere — to the moon maybe?

    the register:

Japan’s lunar orbiter has found a long, deep tunnel under the Moon’s surface.

The find is significant because Earth’s Moon is a nasty place: surface temperatures vary wildly, there’s radiation galore to contend with and Luna’s lack of an atmosphere means the surface is subject to micrometeorite bombardments.

Plans to colonise the satellite have therefore often suggested underground installations, which is a sensible idea but one complicated by the challenge of digging in an environment with all the problems mentioned above. And that’s after you get the diggers up there.

But an underground Moon base now looks less complicated, as Japan’s Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) says the Lunar Radar Sounder on its Selenological and Engineering Explorer orbiter (SELENE) has found “a 50-km long intact lava tube underground along a lava flow river ‘rille’ on the Marius Hills of the Moon”.

Aside from its potential as a place for humanity to locate a moon base, JAXA suggests the find is exciting because the tube may offer the chance to find “valuable lunar rock samples that have not been brecciated, fragmented, or space-weathered, and thus may contain gases (including water) trapped in the past, and also may have maintained records of the past intrinsic magnetic dynamo field.” The agency also thinks Lunar lava tubes might teach us something about the same features on Mars.

Better yet, JAXA says it’s spotted lots of caves on the moon. The long tube detailed in this paper is just one of many candidate caves and holes in a part of the Moon called Marius Hills.

Now all we need to do is find the good ones, figure out how to get there and hope there’s no Empire-Strikes-Back-style Exogorth, aka “giant space slugs”, lurking in the depths

  3. Up early to watch the meteor show…it is a clear sky this morning for great viewing.

Nice choice, Jace.   Schubert died very young.

I also noticed your spelling of Shakespeare and it made me wonder — typo or are you another scholar of the bard’s name spelling?

  4. Patd, I saw the ‘moon cave’ as opposed to the ‘man cave’ on our singular moon.   I suppose after trump starts WWIII and nuclear winter sets-in, the Pope and the gingrichs will already be living in the underground base — joined by trump’s family and all earthly billionaires and their minions.  The cost of this admin’s travel?  Through the moon!

  5. bw, why francis? can’t see him huddled in the moon cave hunkered down bunking in the bunker with that bunch.

jace, yes what bw says… thanks as usual and here are the lyrics 🙂
    Who Is Silvia?

Who is Silvia? what is she,
That all our swains commend her?
    Holy, fair, and wise is she;
The heaven such grace did lend her,
    That she might admirèd be.

Is she kind as she is fair?
            For beauty lives with kindness.
Love doth to her eyes repair,
To help him of his blindness,
    And, being helped, inhabits there.

Then to Silvia let us sing,
            That Silvia is excelling;
    She excels each mortal thing
            Upon the dull earth dwelling:
To her let us garlands bring.

                                        William Shakespeare

  6. trump continues to blow-off the russian sanctions and hopes no ones notices with all of the kerfuffles he ignites as the smoke and mirrors (the bonfire of the vanities!) of his admin cover for his boss putin.  trump is very stressed and his right eye slit is narrowing after a rugged week of working about 10 hours.   He golfed while funerals took place, napped while former potus’s performed for money for disaster victims.  The deal maker, an anachronistic throw back for racist America.  We got what we did not vote for.

  7. What a voice. And what a combo. Schubert, Fritz and Will. Supposed to be 78 this afternoon. Is it too early for Indian summer?

  8. pogo, just for you…
    Indian Summer

    by Dorothy Parker

In youth, it was a way I had
To do my best to please,
And change, with every passing lad,
    To suit his theories.

But now I know the things I know,
    And do the things I do;
And if you do not like me so,
To hell, my love, with you!

  9. seriously, on a beautiful

    Indian Summer
    by William Wilfred Campbell

Along the line of smoky hills
    The crimson forest stands,
And all the day the blue-jay calls
    Throughout the autumn lands.

Now by the brook the maple leans
    With all his glory spread,
And all the sumachs on the hills
Have turned their green to red.

Now by great marshes wrapt in mist,
    Or past some river’s mouth,
Throughout the long, still autumn day
    Wild birds are flying south.

  10. I suppose it’s early Indian summer – we don’t really have the crimson forest yet. The oaks are still pretty much green. But really, music and poetry, sunshine and warm weather on Sunday morning. A nice outro or intro to a week , depending on your point of view.

  11. Pogo – we in Mid-Atlantic will probably have a very limited color palette this fall.  Coming from Colorado where the most impressive color is gold, living in the East brought back childhood memories of the wonderful displays. But, this year seems to be one of little change and then the leaves are on the ground.

Skipping a lot of the idiocy that is in the WH has helped my disposition.  That along with a couple of great naps to augment the relaxation I need this weekend has me perking up and ready to do some long needed chores around the house.

  12. Hi Jace,

Inspired topic – kudos for doing themes.

This brings thoughts of Shakespeare’s musical contemporaries, William Byrd & Thomas Tallis. A suggested tie-in (?) could be the influence of the recusancy in both music & theatre during the Elizabethan era. Coded words, intrigue, the struggle to worship as one desired, not as one was told. A matter of life & death.

Remember, remember, the fifth of November: Gunpowder, treason & plot. A most complicated religious past that brought forth some of the loveliest words & music in English history.

Ye sacred muses, race of Jove.

    Whom music’s lore delighteth ….

From ‘Tallis is Dead” (Ye Sacred Muses) by William Byrd.

  13. Jace,

Thank you.  Wonderful selection.  I’ll truly look forward to the Shakespeare Sundays

  14. This morning, Mrs. Parker and Mr. Shakespeare would have a time of it. Thurber and Dr. Seuss, too. What music might this be set to? Paging Bill Murray and Jan Vogler.

    Whoa! Lis Wiehl!

    That is some deal

    She made with that heel.

    Think of the pain old Billo must feel;

Cuz she really made him squeal.

    Fate sealed.

    (What a jerk.)

  15. So many great songs about autumn.  This standard has been done by many, but I love the Ella version.

  16. Mrdoodlesdog,

Not sure about the music , but love seeing Billo run for cover.  Couldn’t happen to a more deserving prick.

Ms. Wiehl will have financial security for the rest of her life and then some.

I think that when one looks up hypocrisy in contemporary dictionaries it will simply say, “See Fox News”

  17. Sjwny,

Interesting thoughts, and yes a possible tie in. Will explore that further.

As to coded words, they were used in abundance. It was a good way to keep your head in a time when worshiping freely as you chose was frowned upon in the extreme. Religious liberty was all good and well provided you adhered unfailingly to the ‘correct’ doctrine.

  18. The Concert last night was wonderful.  Any show where you can get Sam Moore, Alabama, Yolanda Adams, Robert Earl Keen, Lyle Lovett and Lady Gaga was something to see.  Particularly enjoyed Lady Gaga because I really haven’t paid that much attention to her before.

  19. Pogo,

I think much of what can be said of a summer day can equally be said of an Indian  Summer day. They have no equal. Enjoy! ?

  20. Our foliage has finally exploded with color here in NH.  It’s late…  so don’t give up hope.

Flatus….  I won my dollar back!  My Yankee loving friend had to cough it up to me this morning at breakfast 🙂

    oh yeah….  Trump still sucks!

  21. A Yankee -Dodger World Series. That would have been a true Fall Classic. Astros- Dodgers? I will reserve judgement. In the meantime. Go Dodgers!!

  22. Jace – thanks for the Schubert!

Hopefully the reason trump didn’t show up to the benefit is that he knows how tiny and unqualified he would look.

There’s a book that’s a good read / listen if anyone is interested.  It’s called “The Presidents’ Club”, by Nancy Gibbs and Michael Duffy.  It looks at the interaction between ex Presidents and some of the work they did.

Maybe trump will be like Hoover – a horrible President, but excellent work years later?  Nah – what was I thinking.  Carter still remains my favorite ex-President; what a wonderful human.  His book about his Presidential diary is also a good read / listen.  Gives great insight about how he tried to run the country as if he was an accounting manager – and not a leader.

  23. ny mag: Billionaire Democrat Launches TV Ads Pushing to Impeach Trump
Billionaire Democrat Tom Steyer, a liberal megadonor who pumped $91 million into the bank accounts of Democratic candidates in 2016 alone, is launching a campaign to impeach President Trump.
The first TV spot, which makes the case for “impeaching and removing a dangerous president,” and implores “elected officials to take a stand on impeachment,” was uploaded to YouTube Thursday.
At the end of the 60-second spot, which will be plastered on both TV and social media, Steyer points people to NeedtoImpeach.com, where he writes that “Congress has impeached past presidents for far less” and asks people to sign a petition.
A hedge funder with a soft spot for environmental causes, Steyer has already stipulated that Democrats who want his money in 2018 will need to sign on to the effort to impeach Trump. And while he doesn’t expect to have trouble getting the signatures of rank-and-file Democrats — a recent poll found that nearly 70 percent want Trump removed from office — finding politicians willing to join the effort doesn’t look to be as easy.

  24. Jace, your choice was magnificent!

Renee, with your newfound wealth and our Houston victory we must celebrate the birth of a new era:

  25.

Now, with the political climate in Our America, Dvořák and the Cleveland Quartet provide an immensely calming perspective on our ability to overcome and prosper in the long term.

  26. flatus, tell us about that painting above. are the floating feathers from an eagle, the national symbol, making some kind of statement* about us (given name of composition)?  who’s the artist, Wyeth by any chance?

    *shot or molting

  27. bw, hang in there… aca might get fixed yet.

    nbc news:

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Sunday morning that “all 48 Democrats” are on board with the health care deal negotiated between Senators Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., and Patty Murray, D-Wash.

If Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., puts the bill on the floor, it would “pass overwhelming,” Schumer, D-N.Y., said during an interview on NBC’s “Meet The Press.”

After numerous attempts at repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act failed to pass Congress, the two leaders of the Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, Sen. Alexander and Sen. Murray, started creating an outline for legislation that’s aimed at stabilizing the health insurance markets.

“This is a good compromise,” Schumer said. “It took months to work out. It has a majority. It has 60 senators supporting it. We have all 48 Democrats, 12 Republicans. I would urge Senator McConnell to put it on the floor immediately. It will pass, and it will pass by a large number of votes.”

“I’m not certain yet what the president is looking for here, but I’ll be happy to bring a bill to the floor if I know President Trump would sign it,” McConnell said.

Schumer was also asked repeatedly on “Meet The Press” whether Democrats are willing to negotiate further on health care, but did not give a straight answer.

“We have an agreement,” he said. “We want to stick by it.”

President Donald Trump sent a series of mixed messages on the deal last week, saying he opposed it as a bailout to insurance companies but also calling it a “good start” in the larger effort to repeal and replace Obamacare.

  28. Jamie, If Houston doesn’t win, I sure hope your Dodgers do—it’s been too long since Brooklyn has had a winner.

  29. “Yes,” he authau— authurit–confidently stated, “Those are definitely sea-gull feathers. Or chicken feathers. Of course they could be albino hawk feathers.”

The question remains, however, what are they doing off the bird and out there floating around in the breeze?

  30. Also looks a bit like the scene behind my dad’s chicken plucker. Except for the crow……

  31. Just finished a couple of hours of fun, or what the SFB WH might be doing whenever they hear “Mueller is at the door”.  Shredded a few bags full of papers, things which are not to be shared and lots of medical information.  Much of this stuff has been stored for years while I waited for a shred truck to be available.  Unfortunately, none happened, so a heavy duty shredder was purchased and put to use this afternoon.  I now feel better.  I still have many times more to shred though.

One of the things about my life and world is that almost nothing with my name and address can be put in the trash.  Ideally, nothing except general grocery store mailings would show up in my street mail box.  Anything of import should all go to my post office box.  It is a pain and not easy to do, but it does keep Russian KGB/FSB/SVR/GRU from seeing my important mail.  Oh, and also bad people from seeing things too.

  32. russians emailing me trump promos in 2016 was enough. Russians in my mail box would be intolerable. The B!LL!ONA!RE guy who wants to impeach is pre-mature. Of course, the Dem candidates in 2018 should be eager to impeach in 2019 . . . pence first !

  33. McCain puts out something like:

they drafted low-income people for viet nam…..higher income people found a doctor to say they had a bone spur.

  34. XR,

Right as rain. Gotta get Pence first. Getting rid of Agnew made getting rid of Trickey Dick possible. Pence is dirty, they just haven’t had time to dig because they have been so busy digging around Trump.
