yesterday from The Guardian: Trump faces backlash over reports US navy carrier could be named after him instead of Black war hero
The Trump administration has been accused of delivering a “slap in the face” to US military veterans after reports that a navy aircraft carrier set to honor a Black war hero may, instead, be named after Donald Trump.
The US navy had previously announced that the carrier under construction would be called the USS Doris Miller, in tribute to a sailor celebrated for his heroism during the attack on Pearl Harbor in the second world war.
But the navy is now working to rename the carrier, CNN reported, citing three sources familiar with internal discussions. Two of those sources said there have been conversations about renaming it to honor Trump, according to the network.
“This is a slap in the face to every war hero and every service member who has worn the uniform,” said Derrick Johnson, president of the NAACP civil rights group. “Doris Miller earned his place in American history through courage, sacrifice, and service,” added Johnson. “Donald Trump only wants to serve himself.”
The US navy declined to comment. When contacted for comment, the White House referred the Guardian to the Department of Defense, which declined to comment.
Miller, a navy cook, reportedly shot down four to six Japanese bombers at Pearl Harbor in 1941, despite no formal training on the weapons system he used. He died at sea, in 1943, with two-thirds of the crew lost to a Japanese torpedo aboard the Liscome Bay. Cuba Gooding Jr portrayed him in the 2001 film Pearl Harbor.
He was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions at Pearl Harbor. The citation reads: “While at the side of his Captain on the bridge of the battleship U.S.S. WEST VIRGINIA, Mess Attendant First Class Doris Miller, despite enemy strafing and bombing and in the face of a serious fire, assisted in moving his Captain, who had been mortally wounded, to a place of greater safety, and later manned and operated a machine gun directed at enemy Japanese attacking aircraft until ordered to leave the bridge.”
His family has long advocated for his award to be upgraded to a Medal of Honor.
No carrier in the US navy has ever been named for a sitting president, and reports of the plan to name this one after Trump prompted heavy criticism on Friday. [continues]
last week in Raw Story: ‘Sick’: Firestorm as ‘Cadet Bone Spurs’ dismisses disgruntled military families
People were outraged on Friday after President Donald Trump downplayed the reportedly poor conditions on the USS Abraham Lincoln, where service members have described a dire situation.
Trump was boarding Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland heading to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York when the press corps started asking him questions about the naval vessel and sailors on board.
“Family members of service members are concerned about conditions on the USS Lincoln,” one reporter said.
“That ship is moving. No, they’re not,” Trump responded, saying that the ship would be replaced with another ship.
“Has the deployment gone on too long?” The reporter asked.
“No, no, no. Not nearly long enough,” Trump said, not acknowledging military family members’ worries.
Political commentators and media experts reacted to the president’s remarks.
Internet personality and Chronicles associate editor Pedro L. Gonzalez reacted to Trump’s response.
“Trump doesn’t care about American troops at all,” Gonzalez wrote on X. “He thinks people who serve in the military are suckers. He thinks people who fight and die for this country are fools. I don’t know how you can hear Trump explicitly state that he’s unconcerned about these service members and their families, that he thinks they haven’t been deployed *long enough* in his idiotic war, and still conclude that he’s deeply concerned about American lives.” [continues]

It was corruption that finally brought down Hungary’s fascists.
Voters are wide open to making the case:

Craig, yep, corruption can bring down a dictator, but Dodo’s foolish egomaniacal debacles more likely will do him in IMO rather than public thievery.
Yep PatD, if only everyone could watch him prattle on for an hour about granite helipad while looking at beef prices

One view of sfb I have is that he lives in his alternate world full time. The mass media does not write about his world that way, reading the many columns about him you would not know he is delusional, demented, diseased and senile.
This article is a commentary in Raw Story, discussing his world with more words than I can create on a Saturday morning.

Today in the Diner…
Trump South Carolina Rally, Natalie Harp & Ken Paxton
Trump’s South Carolina rally goes off the rails, plus updates on Natalie Harp, Ken Paxton’s scandals, and James Talarico’s Texas strategy. ☕
Welcome back to the Diner. Today we are serving up a massive plate of political hypocrisy alongside a literal bowl of glass shards as I try to make ropa vieja without bleeding out. We dive into the latest absurdity from the Trump South Carolina rally, where he somehow claimed credit for the greatest economy in history while simultaneously butchering basic geography by trying to rename the Straits of Hormuz. The crowds are definitely catching on to the grift, even if the cameras try to hide it.
We also track the bizarre saga of Natalie Harp, who continues to shadow the campaign like a human printing press, while checking in on the legal battles brewing with Mark Elias and his efforts to secure injunctive relief before the midterms. Down in Texas, James Talarico is holding Ken Paxton accountable, but Democrats really need to stop playing with puppies and focus purely on Paxton’s endless list of corruption scandals.
Finally, we are looking at the Senate map, specifically Adam Hamilton making moves as a Methodist preacher in Kansas, and the ongoing fight to call out Dan Sullivan for backing corporate greed. We also touch on the Trump tariffs crashing into Minnesota and RFK rambling about alternative foods. Grab your coffee and settle in.

Great story about “Come From Away” and the folks of Newfoundland
So Canadians will be paying more for our cars and bourbon and we’ll be paying more for their wood. So we should expect housing costs to rise independent of mortgage rates. A twofer. Glad I’m not in the buy housing market.
Oh, and I did watch a bit of the USA!! 250 Grand Prix 1st practice. Fox Sports 2’s coverage was awful.
