  1. On another election in the news

John Oliver discusses Brazil’s upcoming presidential election, the baggage associated with the two leading candidates, and some insight into acting from John – a person who has acted. Twice.

  2. Yes PatD! Voting in the 2026 midterms is already underway:

In-person voting is already available in six states: Idaho, Minnesota, Mississippi, South Dakota, Vermont and Virginia. Virginia began statewide early in-person voting Sept. 18; Minnesota also made ballots available for in-person voting Sept. 18.

Mail/absentee ballots are already going out in considerably more states. States beginning mail-ballot distribution more than 45 days before Election Day include Arkansas, Delaware, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Another group begins at the 45-day point, including Michigan, New Jersey, Texas and Virginia.

  3. meanwhile, you and I are footing the bill on White House releases new taxpayer-funded ad describing ‘final battle’
The ad is nearly identical to one Trump’s presidential campaign released in 2024.
    Sept. 27, 2026, 11:45 PM EDT
By Megan Shannon, Garrett Haake and Raquel Coronell Uribe
The Trump administration put out a new ad this weekend as part of its “PSA” campaign, this time showing President Donald Trump walking down a hallway as he asks people to join him in his fight to “expel the warmongers from our government.”
Trump posted that ad to Truth Social in January 2024. The repurposed ad now includes “Paid for by the U.S. government.” But it excludes the last few seconds of the 2024 ad, which ends with text reading “Join President Trump’s fight to save America” and his 2024 campaign logo.
The ad signals an expansion of the White House’s controversial use of government funds to air pieces that resemble campaign advertisements. Last week, the White House ran a television ad in which Trump described how he wanted to “defeat communism,” set to the song “Love Me” by JMSN. The White House has called the ads “public service announcements.”
In the latest ad, dramatic black-and-white video shows President Trump walking down a hallway with audio of him saying it is the “final battle” and vowing to “demolish the deep state” and “throw off the sick political class that hates our country.”
“We will rout the fake news media, and we will liberate America from these villains once and for all,” it concludes.
Federal law requires political advertisers to submit certain public disclosures and generally bans using public funds for political advertising. Since the administration maintains the ads are public service announcements, it’s not clear whether those disclosures are available. The White House has not released a specific source of government funding used to air the ads.
The White House defended the ad Sunday, pointing NBC News to a statement it had offered last week when it commented on the other ads released by the administration.
“These public service announcements are about reminding Americans to love their country and understand what makes it worth defending, at home, at our borders, and abroad. The ad is educational and unapologetically patriotic. We should be proud of our country,” a White House spokesperson said.
Another White House official pushed back on the line of questioning: “The PSAs are clearly not political. The president is not on the ballot, and the ads don’t have a call to action.”
The White House did not specifically respond to NBC News’ question about the ad’s being nearly identical to the 2024 Trump campaign ad.
A White House spokesperson also pointed to past examples of ads released by former administrations, including an ad by George W. Bush’s Department of Health and Human Services, a social media campaign by Barack Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency in 2014 and 2015 and an effort by Joe Biden’s administration encouraging Covid-19 vaccination.
The nonpartisan Government Accountability Office dinged the Bush and Obama ad campaigns — Bush’s for not properly disclosing the government was the source and Obama’s for violating “publicity or propaganda and anti-lobbying provisions.”
White House communications director Steven Cheung defended the recent pro-Trump ads Sunday on social media, writing, “Don’t let the Fake News get away with their lies about our epic Public Service Announcements that have been running on tv.”
CNN and The New York Times were first to report about the ad’s being almost identical to Trump’s 2024 campaign ad.
Spending taxpayer dollars on the ads has raised legal and ethical concerns and condemnation from both parties.
“This is the sort of government propaganda one might expect in North Korea, not the United States of America, and it is an egregious and utterly illegal misuse of Americans’ hard-earned tax dollars,” congressional Democratic appropriators wrote in a letter Friday addressed to White House chief of staff Susie Wiles.
The letter was signed by Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash.; Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I.; Rep. Rosa De Lauro, D-Conn.; and Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md.
Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., said Sunday in an interview with CBS that public officials should not “spend public money on private ads for themselves.”

  4. this morning on morning joe

A new taxpayer-funded television ad from the Trump administration, which aired during “Fox News Sunday” and several college and NFL football games this weekend, is drawing controversy. The 30-second spot ends with President Donald Trump staring into the camera alongside the words, “Paid for by the U.S. Government.” It is the latest in a series of taxpayer-funded spots featuring Trump. The White House calls them “public service announcements,” arguing they promote patriotism and policies rather than the president’s campaign. However, critics say the commercials are inherently political, noting past presidential PSAs focused on specific policies rather than promoting the president directly. The Morning Joe panel discusses the ads, their legality and broader implications.

Trump asked China’s president if he wants to buy US arms, ambassador says

President Donald Trump has justified the pending U.S. arms sale to Taiwan to Chinese President Xi Jinping by downplaying it as just one of many sales Washington makes around the world — even asking Xi if he’d be in the market for U.S. arms, Trump’s ambassador to China said on Sunday.

  7. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/sep/28/california-kelvin-wave

Concerns are mounting about an ocean phenomenon known as a Kelvin wave that could raise sea levels along the California coastline by up to a foot, as scientists say El Niño is supercharging the threat of storm surges and flooding in the coming months.

Kelvin waves are not like crashing waves at the beach. They are planetary in scale, spanning thousands of miles.

That wave could reach California shores within days, and when it does, ocean scientists say it may raise sea levels by up to a foot for months as El Niño lingers and keeps that warm water trapped along the coast.

  8. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/sep/28/ai-extinction-threats

But there were a few people who were fully aware of the dangers of AI, especially of recursive self-improvement (RSI), by which AI teaches itself without human intervention. They could not predict precisely when it would happen, but they knew that machine superintelligence was coming, and when it did, the bots would outsmart us – as OpenAI’s did – and this would not be good for us flesh puppets.

As Geoffrey Hinton, AI’s “godfather”, recently asked on CNN: “What examples do we have of a more intelligent thing being controlled by a less intelligent thing?” The Nobel laureate is a leading proponent of slowing down AI development until we understand how to control it.

It was not until their creations’ powers were exposed in September – the hack happened in early July and was neither the first nor the only AI jailbreak by far – that AI moguls such as Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, SpaceX’s Elon Musk and OpenAI’s Sam Altman, began talking about slowing down the pace of innovation and pleading for regulation, while cautioning that global competition makes regulation unwise.

  9. I still say the Ai techlords went public en masse because they PLAN to have ~rogue~ Ai agents do something nefarious. They want a financial and criminal waiver for any damage done. That’s the only reason they would want the government involved. Well, that and bogarting the NVIDIA chips.

It’s all just rearranging those deck chairs on the Titanic, though. Climate change will get most of us through starvation, extreme temperatures, flooding, or civil unrest caused by these disruptive events.

  19. I cried watching the video at the end of the show. It made me feel the hope we all once had and the drive for a better US. Then Trump showed up and all the deplorables came out of the woodwork to have things be dialed back.

  20. Also, had to post this. The Cornell case has really hit home as this is something similar as to what has happned to me and countless other people on campuses. Wheather it be sexual assault, rape, hazing, etc, this all happens and no one does anything for it unless there is pressure from local government. But this says it all.

Sherrod Brown, Ohio Senate Data Centers
    Tommy Tuberville on Furries

Tommy Tuberville talks furries while Sherrod Brown and John Husted battle over Ohio data centers. Plus, the Cornell frat scandal and Major Watson.

We kick things off with the absolute absurdity of Tommy Tuberville warning the nation about an alleged epidemic of pilots and air traffic controllers joining the furry community. It is top-tier political theater right out of the MAGA playbook, distracting from actual governance while real money floods the zone elsewhere. Over in Ohio, a massive advertising blitz is targeting John Husted over his FirstEnergy ties, while Sarah Longwell’s focus groups show Trump defectors hyper-fixated on Sherrod Brown and the sudden influx of data centers.

Meanwhile, Minnesota Representative Tom Emmer is bizarrely campaigning in dozens of other districts instead of his own, leaving challengers like Doug Chapin waiting for an avalanche. We also dive into the grim reality of the Cornell frat scandal, contrasting campus date-rape culture with the infamous Roy Cooper Duke lacrosse decision. Finally, we take a moment to salute Major Watson for his principled stand on the Capitol steps, an act of true courage that the political establishment wants you to forget.

  26. This is the complete text of my OpEd to the big Lexington, Kentucky newspaper: Today I’m honoring a radio personality that was a big part of my childhood because in those days it seemed like half the time our television would burn out a tube and we would be without television for sometimes months at a time so my entertainment was gotten from my plug-in a.m. radio.
Today I’m honoring in the month of the 25th year of his death, Cawood Ledford, who broadcast University of Kentucky basketball games with such great flair. It was a pleasure listening to him on the radio. He was not a homer per se, in other words, he would call a fair game. In my opinion, Hilliard Gates of Fort Wayne and Cawood Ledford were equals in calling basketball. In the last part of his career, the last 21 years or so he teamed with Ralph Hacker , who was the perfect wingman for Ledford. Hacker was very much skilled himself and he took over the broadcasting duties after Mr. Ledford retired.
Not many people listen to AM radio anymore, for those of us who really liked a great radio broadcast and in my case for basketball, on icy winter nights when the television was sitting , waiting for repair, it was great entertainment, listening to the great Cawood Ledford and Ralph Hacker from Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky.

  27. the greek system should have been jettisoned 30 years ago but it’s bigger than ever because Americans love exclusivity, and the greek system parents provide revenue for big college business

same with that dumb football shit

  28. my point was the only person with a national profile warning against oligarchy 10 years ago was Bernie

    sure as hell wasn’t HRC

even Craig disliked her, you’re her last defender

wasn’t aiming to impugn her though, i’m saying that that was the inflection point, our mistake was not nominating Bernie

  29. it’s all broken but don’t worry the techlords will fix it for us

    they’ll fix it real good

  30. Don’t tell Tubby but a furrie showed up at Auburn.

Phillip Ensler is an American attorney and Democratic politician currently serving as a member of the Alabama House of Representatives, representing the 74th district (Montgomery County). He is also the Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Alabama in the November 2026 general election.

  31. She won the election. The EC prevented assuming office and yes the Bernie bros did a number in the battleground states. Sorry folks. I may like his positions on issues, but I do not like Bernie for a host of reasons that I won’t fight about now.

Until we get rid of the EC, real democracy doesn’t stand a chance.

  32. Sorry we missed this scene. I hope it was televised.

On Sunday, September 27, 2026, President Trump attended the final day of the Presidents Cup golf tournament at the Medinah Country Club outside Chicago in his capacity as honorary chairman. While he was widely cheered by spectators chanting “USA”, a dramatic moment occurred on the live broadcast as he and PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp posed near the trophy. A heckler in the crowd punctured the moment, shouting directly at him, “You’re a f—ing pedophile, Donald!”

  33. yeah, but I’m shitting on someone who is now irrelevant (I didn’t bring her up by the way) and you’re shitting on someone who is still a relevant ideological leader

    because he chose to be

    she chose

    crying in the woods

  34. i think i support eliminating the EC (not sure about unindented consequences tbh) but it’s not like the rules were secret

ya gotta win in the EC and she didn’t because she didn’t appeal to the deplorables cuz she knew she couldn’t

but didn’t appeal to the non-deplorables that trump mobilized either

    and why

cuz she and libdems didn’t think they needed to

  35. i voted for her btw as i always like to say because she was the only sane choice against the crook we got now

    still bitter

i swear i wasn’t even thinking about her until Jamie brought her up! BiD understood my initial Bernie post in the spirit it was intended

  40. https://newrepublic.com/post/215947/ken-paxton-defends-one-day-plea-deal-child-sex-predator

Ken Paxton Defends One-Day Plea Deal Offered to Child Sex Predator

“The criticism has been that I let a child predator out [after serving] one day,” Paxton said. “Well, guess what? They served 60 days. It wasn’t what we wanted, but we did not control the situation. We did our best.”

VIDEO OF THOSE WORDS COMING OUT OF HIS MOUTH IN LINK.

The embattled attorney general is referring to the sweetheart deal his prosecutors offered to Adam Hoffman, a Texas man charged with repeatedly molesting a young boy, earlier this year. The deal would have allowed Hoffman to serve just one day in prison for the crime he pleaded guilty to, and allowed him to avoid signing up for the sex offender registry—a move that was widely criticized.

The judge in the case was appalled by the deal. “One day. Seriously? Somebody has to sell me on the wisdom of it,” said Judge Roy Sparkman, who insisted on the 60-day sentence.

  41. https://www.texastribune.org/2026/09/28/houston-ice-lorenzo-salgado-araujo-shooter-identified/

Today, we are publishing the name of the officer who allegedly shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston this summer. In recent weeks, local law enforcement and members of Congress have said their questions about the shooting have not been answered. We are publishing because we believe transparency in the case is of vital public interest as investigators, lawmakers and the public seek to understand what happened and how ICE operates more broadly in this state.

The federal immigration agent who witnesses say fired through an open van window and killed 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston nearly three months ago has been identified to The Texas Tribune as Gregory Feathers by an official familiar with the investigation who is not authorized to speak publicly. His role in the shooting is also corroborated by records, some of which were publicly released.

Feathers was rehired within the past two years after previously retiring, according to two people with knowledge of his employment history, overlapping with the second Trump administration’s aggressive recruitment of former Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers to help meet its ambitious deportation goals.

Feathers has not been charged with a crime and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has defended the shooting as an act of self-defense. But the local district attorney appears to be currently empaneling a grand jury that could result in criminal charges for Feathers, who through his attorney declined to comment.

  42. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2026/sep/22/fcc-chair-brendan-carr-midtown-aa-group

Brendan Carr, the chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), was for about a decade a member of a rogue Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) group when he was in his late teens and 20s that some former members compared to a “cult”, according to a Guardian investigation.

…former Midtown members say its one-time leader Michael Quinones – who died of cancer in 2007 – came to control nearly every aspect of their lives, including where they lived, worked and went to school. Former members who spoke to the Guardian also allege that teenage girls and young women were sexually exploited at Midtown, where they were regularly pressured and coerced into “dating” and having sex with multiple men who were also Midtown members – sometimes decades older than them. In at least one case, a former member said she believes that what happened to her could be described as sex trafficking.

People who knew Carr during his years in Midtown say they do not believe he participated in inappropriate behavior. He was seen as providing a “safe respite” in an environment where some teenage girls and young women bore the brunt of “forced relationships, restrictive diets” and psychological manipulation, one former member said. He was described, too, by that former member, as sensitive and desperate for the approval of others.

Being a member of Midtown did not necessarily mean a person was an alcoholic, according to most of the former members. Sometimes young people were sent there by their parents, especially parents who had a history of drinking problems, as a way to try to correct problematic behavior.

Carr joined the group in 1996, when he was about 17 years old and a senior in high school, and appears to have remained a member for about nine years, including while attending law school, according to the Guardian’s reporting. While it is difficult to pinpoint when exactly Carr left the group, he spoke about his sobriety journey in a recorded Midtown speech in 2005, in which he also referenced that he was in his last semester of law school. The Guardian has also seen a group photograph of a men’s retreat that sources said was taken in 2006. In it, Carr is standing a few rows behind Quinones. He would have been about 27 years old in 2006. Carr, through a spokesperson, denied being a member of Midtown “up to and through 2006”.

*Why deny it when there’s nothing bad about you being said?

  43. https://www.newsweek.com/trump-putin-diesel-export-ban-fuel-prices-12497496

When Europe went cold on Russian oil and gas imports in the months after Putin sent his soldiers into Ukraine, Washington was ready and waiting to step in.

Trump said on Sunday that he is “very seriously” considering a ban on American diesel exports as on-highway prices hit a record $6.529 a gallon last week. The idea has already been gathering support among Republican lawmakers…

Putin has little to celebrate at the moment. But if Washington decides to follow his lead and slap an export ban on U.S. diesel, you can bet the Russian president will crack a smile.
