Something a bit different for today and truly beautiful. A wonderful plaintive folk song from the Celtic tradition performed in Gaelic. The singing and instrumentations are special.
Full Translation:
Love, let me home to my mother
Love, let me home to my mother
Darling, let me home to my mother
Love, let me home to my mother
I only came for the cattle.
It was only last night
That I heard that my love was herding
And though you found me at the perimeter of the cattle fold
Love, let me home as you found me.
I was clambering up the dykes
And descending the ridges
When a friendly lad met me
And he did not enforce his friendship on me.
Though you were to give me cattle and sheep
Though you were to give me tethered horses
Though you were to give me that and men
Love, let me home as you found me.
My mother and father will chastise you
My clan and my relatives will chastise you
But my three brothers will kill you
If I don’t return home as I came.
My mother promised me a gown
Decorated with the newest of ribbons
And she promised me a new plaid
If I return home the way you found me.
As always enjoy the music and enjoy your day!

jace, thank you. plaintive is an understatement.
btw, have you ever noticed how reminiscent of the bagpipe these gaelic songs are? don’t even need one actually playing to hear it in the distance.
Nice selection Jace (as always). Mrs. P is a fan of Celtic music and I suspect she’ll love this one. She used to listen regularly to Fiona Ritchie’s Thistle and Shamrock show on NPR. When she wakes up again I’ll treat her to it.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — “Ditch Mitch 2020.” That’s the message behind a billboard in Louisville.
The group Indivisible Kentucky says it paid for the billboard because members haven’t been able to reach Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell. It’s just off the side of I-65, near Cardinal Boulevard. You can see it if you’re driving on the southbound side of the highway.
The group says it is paying for a second billboard that will be near Saint Catherine Street.
here’s an excerpt of the specific message from that group, Indivisible Kentucky :
After repeatedly attempting to engage Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to no avail, Indivisible Kentucky is taking steps this week to get his attention: we’ve put up billboards & ask you to join us in the effort to #DitchMitch2020.
If you see our billboards in your travels (they’re located on I-65 Northbound between the Watterson and Muhammed Ali), take a picture and post it to social media and be sure to tag us (@Indivisible_KY3) and Senator McConnell (@SenateMajLdr). And include the hashtag #DitchMitch2020!
Also, if you’re able, could you donate $5 or more to Indivisible Kentucky to help with our advertising campaign? Indivisible Kentucky has set a goal of raising $20,000 for a media purchasing blitz, starting with the billboard advertising campaign.
Kentuckians deserve access to the same fundamental rights as even the wealthiest Americans: the right to affordable, quality healthcare, a good education, clean water, and freedom from discrimination based on our gender, race or sexual orientation. We’ve had enough of Mitch McConnell siding with those in power rather than his constituents.
Throughout his lengthy congressional tenure, McConnell has ignored the Constitution for partisan gain. He’s spent decades putting politics and power over policy and people. Not long ago McConnell campaigned on the very issue – health care access – he’s now attempting to take away from millions of people.
His current actions – particularly the Senate health care bill aimed at repealing the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) – would critically harm hundreds of thousands of Kentuckians on both sides of the aisle.
The lives of everyday Kentucky families mean less to McConnell than the money he receives from corporate interests and his support for the Trump administration.
Thank You Jace.
xrepublican,
I am sorry you have physical pain. Nothing I write can help ease your maladies but please know someone cares.
Hail, Hail Freedonia! Zeppo’s tour de force tee shirt moment. They could have melted him down for ammo because he certainly was leaden.
Bonus points if know what Gummo looked like.
If #45 is concerned about the military he should ban straight men because 99.999% of any problems I’ve heard about stems from their actions. I mean, really.
Thank you Jace. Lovely selection for our Sunday tradition.
If anyone isn’t familiar with Thistle & Shamrock, there is a radio station online at Thistleradio.com
Harpo, Groucho, Chico and Gummo Marx 1915. Good looking guys when they weren’t being hilarious.
Doing something radical but giving praise to Senator Schumer for his actions during the last Health Care Bill vote. He “shussed” his fellow Dems when they started to clap after Senator McCain’s nay gesture. This was a classy, bipartisan act. Wondering how many “behind the scenes” discussions he’s had with Senator McCain about wresting the Senate away from the kids & reestablishing adult supervision. Good Luck to him, it’s going to be a bumpy, long road.
Speaking of Groucho, Chico, Harpo … and sometimes Zeppo: our Era needs smart, sharp, subversive comedic writing. Saying something that has more than one meaning, several layers. Dialogue that makes you think & never goes stale. The world would be a better place if everyone studied a Marx Brothers movie.
sjwny – although the purge of trans people has not occurred yet, there are others who face the same fate, but not probable discharge from service. Women in combat, women in planes, women in helicopters, generally women in any MOS except for clerks. The far right religion groups, same who hate LGBTQ, do not like having women in combat. Would they and SFB be stupid enough to want to do a purge? I tend to think they are that stupid.
A gripe I have is the meme that SFB has a majority of the world supporting him. It is only the low or mid thirty percent, not a large number. Sixty percent plus do not support him, but reading articles you would not know that.
Writing is an art & few people write anymore. They text, they tweet. Movies rely more on computer generated fakery than use of inference through dialogue or clever cutaways. The modern day addiction on vulgarity is cheap, quick, unimaginative. Vocabulary should be celebrated. Wordsmiths, wherefore art thou?
Blue Bronc,
I was being facetious 😉 But most bad stuff we civilians hear about stems from the actions of straight guys. If #45 is serious about this, he should target the real problem. ✔
Easier though to bully & spotlight the most vulnerable. Grab a pitchfork, light a torch. Gin up the mob. Takes less effort to walk the low road than climb the high road.
Sorry to change the subject but I ran across this article about solar energy versus coal energy jobs yesterday and felt it was worth sharing.
Get that, SFB? There are over 3 times as many solar jobs in the US than coal jobs. The former is growing, the latter contracting. Sure, coal’s coming back – just like buggy whips.
oh, and Jace, Mrs. P indeed liked it. Thanks.
sjwny – opening scene Red Line to Shady Grove
Very good, Blue Bronc.
A beautiful morning glory to the trail with music by Jace.
For your Sunday reading, trump, the mob, russia and justice/fbi.
Jace, made the mistake of reading the news while listening to this fine tune. Back to the tune.
Reuters: U.S. flies bombers over Korean peninsula after North Korea missile test
Thanks, Jace. Despite my roots, I don’t think I could do Celtic music as a steady diet, but as an occasional snack its good with coffee and a bagel. May your weather become more seasonal…
“A gripe I have is the meme that SFB has a majority of the world supporting him.”
bbronc, me too, especially considering Over 231 million Americans are eligible to vote. However, based on early results from the 2016 Presidential election, just over 130 million of them voted for either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump… an estimated 57.9 percent voted at all and considering the twit got only 46% of that. not exactly a landside or mandate.
sjwny, less males in military would also mean less viagra and cialis taxpayers have to buy the aging generals and retirees
pogo, speaking of coal miners, did you catch Doonesbury today?
Craig,
Glad you liked it. Thanks for tweaking the post and adding the lyrics.?

Flatus,
I thought it was a nice change of pace. I tend to get caught up in “classical” music from the Western European tradition and it’s all too easy to forget how much folk and traditional music is out there. I especially enjoy learning about the historical backround of the music. Songs of resistance, treachery, love, and joy, all steeped in the history of the lands from which they came.
Bombers over the Korean Peninsula and SFB with the codes. Oh shit!

just think, ’twere it not for vlad and his bromancer, we might be celebrating today not only the anniversary of medicare but the expansion thereof to all…. or at least an announcement to work toward out of a very different white house
Jamie – that is some fine music. Good stuff.
cbs news: Nation Tracker poll: Most say Trump creating “conflict and drama” and “chaos” as core backers applaud the fight
Six months in, President Donald Trump’s strongest backers like seeing him fight his chosen opponents: they want the president to call out those he believes disloyal, do even more to make Democrats mad, fight with the mainstream media, and feel he’s taking on “people who deserve it.”
But the combativeness they applaud seems precisely what most others dislike. And that – along with declining personal evaluations – is costing the president potential support, even as many give him credit for an improving economy, according to a new Nation Tracker poll released Sunday.
The president’s overall ratings on the metrics of being “presidential” and “effective” remain down, and today many of his softer and would-be supporters feel he creates unnecessary “conflict and drama,” and most of his detractors – and most Americans overall – describe what they see from the White House as “chaos.”

In line with yesterday’s conversation, I was prowling around in my favorite philosophers writings and decided to order a Kindle version (easier to hold than books these days) and this is from the Amazon description:
Apparently even in 1738, you could sympathize, empathize, but can’t actually “know” the experiences of others.
This one is rich.
Lol.

Oh come on. Don’t knock Woodland Hills … a million in every bank account and a pool in every yard. The Delis for those who arrived in the 1960s are pretty good too.
Jamie – empathy is one of those issues which is frequently taught, but hard to experience. Of interest to me is I could not do role play until the last few years (roughly starting about four years after I transitioned). I find it fascinating to do. Why so late in life did this happen? Is it something that is related to my change? One thought I have is that I was so deep in to the role of playing a male I could not let my guard down and attempt to think outside of that.
We have a saying that trans people before transition are the best actors in the world because we put to all a person who we are not literally 24/7/365. In my case I look back and am starting to think there were probably a few who thought I was a gay guy. I tried real hard to be a guy but lacked the wiring to do it. So my acting was a bit off from the guy next door.
bbronc, did you see “two spirits” which premiered in 2011 (on some pbs stations)? if so, what did you think of it?
from pbs independentlens About the Film
Two Spirits interweaves the tragic story of a mother’s loss of her son with a revealing look at the largely unknown history of a time when the world wasn’t simply divided into male and female and many Native American cultures held places of honor for people of integrated genders.
Fred Martinez was nádleehí, a male-bodied person with a feminine nature, a special gift according to his ancient Navajo culture. He was one of the youngest hate-crime victims in modern history when he was brutally murdered at 16. Two Spirits explores the life and death of this boy who was also a girl, and the essentially spiritual nature of gender. MORE
Two Spirits tells compelling stories about traditions that were once widespread among the indigenous cultures of North America. The film explores the contemporary lives and history of Native two-spirit people — who combine the traits of both men and women with qualities that are also unique to individuals who express multiple genders.
The Navajo believe that to maintain harmony, there must be a balanced interrelationship between the feminine and the masculine within the individual, in families, in the culture, and in the natural world. Two Spirits reveals how these beliefs are expressed in a natural range of gender diversity. For the first time on film, it examines the Navajo concept of nádleehí, “one who constantly transforms.”
In Navajo culture, there are four genders; some indigenous cultures recognize more. Native activists working to renew their cultural heritage adopted the English term “two-spirit” as a useful shorthand to describe the entire spectrum of gender and sexual expression that is better and more completely described in their own languages. The film demonstrates how they are revitalizing two-spirit traditions and once again claiming their rightful place within their tribal communities.
Two Spirits mourns the young Fred Martinez and the threatened disappearance of the two-spirit tradition, but it also brims with hope and the belief that we all are enriched by multi-gendered people, and that all of us — regardless of ethnicity, gender, sexuality, or cultural heritage — benefit from being free to be our truest selves.
i better share this from rolling stone’s matt taibbi before mooch is thrown under the bus by the general:
The Anthony Scaramucci Era Will Be Freakish, Embarrassing and All Too Short
Glad-handing hedge-funder turned White House press chief has reignited the comic potential of Trump presidency. It’s too bad he won’t last past the end of this sentence
[…after some well-put but scathing paragraphs, matt concludes….]
An actual smart person given this job wouldn’t bother with any of this. He or she would simply take the podium each day and say, “What can I say? The president said that shit.” Then just no-comment everything but schedules and staff announcements. Over time, reporters might actually respect the work. Probably not, but maybe.
Scaramucci represents a third strategy, one that’s similar to Trump’s own campaign tactics. That is, don’t ever react to the news or attempt to explain it, but continually stay ahead of it by making new news of your own.
There are thousands of reporters in America, and if Scaramucci has the stomach for it, he should call a new one every night and just rant his brains out. It might not save America from being the laughingstock of the planet – that ship has sailed for us – but at least it will be entertaining. At this point in our relationship with the Trump administration, we have to take what little enjoyments we can. And remember, the next press chief could be Alex Jones.
Long live Mooch (checks Twitter).
patd – Two Spirits is something that is well spoken of in transgender circles. Of interest to me is that I am Native American on both sides of my family. How spirituality is in my life, I am dealing with it. I like so many other trans people are non-believers in Western theologies, usually looking at an Eastern thought. But, I am still trying to find a way to allow thoughts like those into my being. I am a scientist and an engineer. How do I find a way for mystical thinking into a brain which has learned that hate drives religion?
For someone like me trying to “believe” when told you are evil and to be outcast is difficult. I have friends who are clinging to religions which declare them evil, and evil so bad they must be punished. That is hard to take. Yet they want to stay with those religions.
That said, I do accept that I am a Two Spirit. I am someone who can be a different way of thinking.
Hence the cartoon tough-guy act. Scaramucci’s star didn’t fade when he gave that batty and profane interview in which he reimagined Steve Bannon as a kind of autoerotic yogi. That’s Scaramucci’s best impersonation of the sort of man the president of these United States, God help us, aspires to be. But he isn’t that guy. He isn’t Blake. He’s poor sad old Shelley Levene, who cannot close the deal, who spends his nights whining about the unfairness of it all. So, listen up, Team Trump: “Put that coffee down. Coffee is for closers only.” Got that? READ MORE: Who Killed Obamacare Repeal? Blame Trump When a Diminishing President Is a Good Thing Trump, Party of One

These guys don’t want to see Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross. What they want is to be Blake. They want to swagger, to curse, to insult, and to exercise power over men, exercising power over men being the classical means to the end of exercising power over women, which is of course what this, and nine-tenths of everything else in human affairs, is about. Blake is a specimen of that famous creature, the “alpha male,” and establishing and advertising one’s alpha creds is an obsession for some sexually unhappy contemporary men. There is a whole weird little ecosystem of websites (some of them very amusing) and pickup-artist manuals offering men tips on how to be more alpha, more dominant, more commanding, a literature that performs roughly the same function in the lives of these men that Cosmopolitan sex tips play in the lives of insecure women. Of course this advice ends up producing cartoonish, ridiculous behavior. If you’re wondering where Anthony Scaramucci learned to talk and behave like such a Scaramuccia, ask him how many times he’s seen Glengarry Glen Ross.
Wiki: Scaramuccia (literally “little skirmisher”), also known as Scaramouche or Scaramouch, is a stock clown character of the Italian commedia dell’arte (comic theatrical arts). The role combined characteristics of the zanni (servant) and the Capitano (masked henchman). Usually attired in black Spanish dress and burlesquing a don, he was often beaten by Harlequin for his boasting and cowardice.
