  3. US Supreme Court temporarily halts deportations of Venezuelan migrants under wartime law

    (Reuters) -The U.S. Supreme Court early on Saturday paused President Donald Trump’s administration from deporting Venezuelan men in immigration custody after their lawyers said they were at imminent risk of removal without the judicial review previously mandated by the justices.
    “The Government is directed not to remove any member of the putative class of detainees from the United States until further order of this Court,” the justices said in a brief, unsigned decision.
    Conservative Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito publicly dissented from the decision, issued around 12:55 a.m. (0455 GMT).
    Lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union filed urgent requests on Friday in multiple courts, including the Supreme Court, urging immediate action after reporting that some of the men had already been loaded onto buses and were told they were to be deported.
    The ACLU said the rapid developments meant the administration was poised to deport the men using a 1798 law that historically has been employed only in wartime without affording them a realistic opportunity to contest their removal – as the Supreme Court had required.
    The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Supreme Court decision.
    The case raises questions about the Trump’s administration’s adherence to limits set by the Supreme Court. It carries the risk of a significant clash between the two coequal branches of government and potentially a full-blown constitutional crisis.
    Elected last year on a promise to crack down on migrants, Trump invoked the 1798 Alien Enemies Act in an attempt to swiftly deport accused members of Tren de Aragua, a criminal gang originating from Venezuelan prisons that his administration labels a terrorist group.
    The president and his senior aides have asserted their executive power grants them wide authority on immigration matters, testing the balance of power between branches of government.
    BATTLE IN SEVERAL COURTS
    During a hearing on Friday, a government lawyer said in a related case that he was unaware of plans by the Department of Homeland Security to deport the men on Friday but there could be deportations on Saturday.
    Trump scored one victory on Friday when an appeals court put on hold a threat by District Judge James Boasberg of contempt charges.
    Boasberg also denied an ACLU request to block Trump from deporting suspected members of Tren de Aragua, citing an April 7 Supreme Court ruling that allowed Trump to use the Alien Enemies Act, albeit with certain limits.
    Boasberg said he was concerned the government would deport additional people as soon as Saturday but that, “At this point I just don’t think I have the power to do anything about it.”
    Trump previously called for Boasberg’s impeachment following an adverse ruling, prompting a rare rebuke from U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts.
    While one hearing played out in Boasberg’s court, the ACLU worked on a separate track to halt the deportations of Venezuelans held in Texas.
    ACLU lawyers filed with the Supreme Court after failing to get a rapid response from earlier filings on Friday before U.S. District Judge James Hendrix in Abilene, Texas, and the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans to block any such deportations.
    In Saturday’s order, the Supreme Court invited the administration to file a response to the ACLU’s request after the 5th Circuit acts.
    The ACLU said the men had been handed forms indicating they were classified as members of Tren de Aragua.
    At issue is whether the Trump administration has met the Supreme Court’s standard for providing the detainees due process before sending them to another country – possibly to the notorious prison in El Salvador where others are jailed.
    It was unclear on Friday how many people were potentially to be deported, and where they might be taken.

  8. Caturday is here again. Mommy mouse and little ones (eyes not open yet) made it through the night. Still working on plan B.

    I had the unfortunate timing to see part of a propaganda presser featuring krasnov. I hope that my non-medical trained eyes saw a fat slob closer to room temperature than his recent medical report stated. Skin color not covered in makeup was grey. Eyes sunk in deep and a face that looked quite droopy. The amount of makeup needed just to cover up the stench of death has to be measured in gallons now.

    Notably, the budget at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) “assumes a decline in Federal Exchange enrollment due to the expiration of the enhanced premium tax credits.”

    states that have not extended Medicaid would lose out the largest over time. Hospitals and providers would also see big revenue declines, particularly in rural areas. Others estimate 4 million individuals would lose their insurance, and the Congressional Budget Office projects a 4.3% premium increase.

    Within agencies, entire offices are deleted or absorbed by other agencies. They include the Head Start program, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program and the National Institute on Minority Health at the NIH.

    The document also outlines eliminations at certain agencies. These items are listed via bullet point on the first page.

    In the HRSA, that includes “State Offices of Rural Health,” Title V Block grants, certain Ryan White HIV program services, public health workforce development, geriatric programs, primary care training and enhancement, nursing workforce diversity, medical school education, training in oral health and behavioral health programs.

    For the CDC, that includes youth violence prevention, traumatic brain injury, elderly falls, climate and health, asthma, childhood lead poisoning, mining research and personal protective technology.

    Under “GDM Eliminations,” possibly representing general departmental management, food as medicine, still birth taskforce and teen pregnancy prevention are listed. “Embryo Adoptive Awareness Campaign” is listed twice.

    At the CMS, “Health Equity” and discretionary Inflation Reduction Act implementation funding is eliminated. Under the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, the Office of Population Affairs is gone. For Indian Health Services, “Preventive Health” is a casualty.

He’s getting enough bowing and scraping from foreign leaders and others to bolster his fragile ego.   37. Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced an “Easter truce” in Ukraine, according to reports.
    The Russian Ministry of Defence released a statement confirming that Russia will stop all military operations from 18:00 Moscow time (16:00 BST) today until midnight on 21 April (22:00 BST).
    The ministry says all military actions have been ordered to stop, adding that the decision was “guided by humanitarian considerations”.
    They say they expect the Ukrainian side to do the same, but it is unclear whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accepted the terms of the truce.

    Berulis’ lawyer, Andrew P. Bakaj from Whistleblower Aid, disclosed: “While my client and my team were preparing this disclosure, someone physically taped a threatening note to Mr. Berulis’ home door with photographs—taken via a drone—of him walking in his neighborhood.

    “The threatening note made clear reference to this very disclosure he was preparing for you, as the proper oversight authority. While we do not know specifically who did this, we can only speculate that it involved someone with the ability to access NLRB systems.”

    He said the DOGE staffers arrived at the office in a black SUV with a police escort, and “interacted with only a small group of NLRB staff, never introducing themselves to those of us in Information Technology.”

    Berulis then said the DOGE staffers requested “the highest level of access and unrestricted access to internal systems” and were given “tenant owner” level accounts allowing them “essentially unrestricted permission to read, copy, and alter data.” Berulis’ team were told to “stay out of DOGE’s way entirely.”

    He said that their access to these accounts “was not open to discussion.”

    Berulis explained that Microsoft’s best-practices detail tenant accounts should “never be assigned to auditors because it can mask actions like creating or deleting accounts, changing role assignments, or altering policies and far exceeds any legitimate job need.” He said it was now “impossible” for him to tell which accounts are being used by DOGE inside the system.

    Although Berulis has worked in IT for 20 years, he says he was “directed not to resist them in any way or deny them any access.”

    The disclosure goes on to reveal that Berulis found odd occurrences in the NLRB’s IT systems on March 5 and 6, including employees struggling to log into their accounts.

    On March 10, Berulis found that controls to prevent insecure or unauthorized mobile devices from logging into “our tenant” were disabled and that internal alerting, monitoring systems, and multi-factor authentication systems were also changed.

    He said he then saw a spike in “what appeared to be sensitive data leaving the secured location it is meant to be stored…that kind of spike is extremely unusual because data almost never directly leaves NLRB’s databases.”

    Despite trying to track down more information about this data being removed from the NLRB site, Berulis says he was told the department did not have the capacity needed to detect or respond to “internal threat actors.”

    On March 11, Berulis and his team noticed a login attempt from an IP in Primorskiy Krai, Russia.

    He said the Russian IP address was using a correct NLRB username and password and was coming from a newly created account used for other DOGE-related activity.

    Berulis said there were more than 20 log-in attempts to this account, many of which occurred within 15 minutes of the account being created by DOGE engineers.

    Berulis also witnessed a spike in billing inconsistencies.

    According to his lawyer, the drone photographs taken of Berulis and his dog were sent to him while he was preparing his disclosure.

    His attorney said: “While we do not know specifically who did this, we can only speculate that it involved someone with the ability to access NLRB systems.”

    Pope Francis skipped the Vatican’s official meeting with Vice President J.D. Vance Saturday, instead having his No. 2 give the vice president a lecture on compassion, according to a Vatican statement.

    Pope Francis was absent from Vance’s conversation with Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

    However, the statement said there was “an exchange of opinions on the international situation, especially regarding countries affected by war, political tensions and difficult humanitarian situations, with particular attention to migrants, refugees, and prisoners.”

    It called for “serene collaboration” between the White House and the Catholic Church in the United States—a seeming hint to the tensions that have brewed between the two since President Donald Trump took office.

    A statement from Vance’s office about the meeting, however, did not include migration among the topics of conversation.

    It said the two discussed “the plight of persecuted Christian communities around the world” as well as Trump’s “commitment to restoring world peace,” Bloomberg reported.

    Pope Francis has repeatedly rebuked the president’s mass deportation effort, calling it a “disgrace” and a “grave sin.”

    The pontiff has also specifically confronted Vance, the highest-ranking Catholic in the U.S. government, having converted in 2019.

    Without mentioning the VP by name, the Pope corrected a Catholic concept Vance had invoked to defend the administration’s deportations, ordo amoris (order of love). In a February letter, Francis pointedly explained, “Christian love is not a concentric expansion of interests that little by little extend to other persons and groups.”

    Vance acknowledged the Pope’s criticism, calling himself a “baby Catholic” and admitting that there are “things about the faith that I don’t know.”

    In January, Vance found himself in a tussle with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops after he suggested they were helping “resettle illegal immigrants” to secure funding.

    Inside Vatican sources told Sky News that Vance did briefly meet with the Pope at his residence, but no details of their conversation have been made public.
