Sunday Serendipity

Oboe Concerto in F major, by Johann Sebastian Bach

From the video notes:

This Concerto for Oboe in F major, performed by Emma Black and the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, is a reconstruction of an oboe concerto, based on the keyboard concerto in E major, BWV 1053. Oboists did fairly well out of Bach, as his oeuvre contains more than two hundred oboe solos. They often concern one or two oboes in opening choruses and arias in the cantatas. But the true solo repertoire is sparse. For example, no solo concertos for oboe have survived. There are indications that Bach did indeed compose oboe concertos, whose manuscripts and parts have been lost over the years. For a complete oboe concerto, however, we have to rely on reconstructions, such as this Oboe Concerto in F major BWV 1053r.

Enjoy, Jack

  1. Host Steve Harvey (Kenan Thompson) welcomes key players in the 2024 election, like Kamala Harris (Maya Rudolph), Doug Emhoff (Andy Samberg), Tim Walz (Jim Gaffigan) and Joe Biden (Dana Carvey), to face off against Donald Trump (James Austin Johnson), Donald Trump Jr. (Mikey Day) and JD Vance (Bowen Yang) in a game of Family Feud.

  2. Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che tackle the week’s biggest news, like Trump confirming he wouldn’t agree to a second debate against Kamala Harris.

  3. looks like they’re hard at work on the campaign trail this week

Tim Walz to hold campaign event in North Carolina on Thursday • NC Newsline

Walz will hold a campaign event in Durham on Thursday, October 17 — the first day North Carolinians can cast an in-person ballot in the fall election. Those not yet registered to vote can also register and cast their ballot on the same day during early voting, which runs through Saturday November 2.
This will be Walz’s second trip to the Trangle as the Number 2 person on the Democratic ticket. The Minnesota governor visited Raleigh shortly after accepting the nomination for vice president in August, at which time he spoke to volunteers in a campaign office, got a milk shake with Gov. Roy Cooper, and attended a private fundraiser. It’s also part of a steady parade of visits from both major thickets that figures to continue for the next three-plus weeks.
Walz’s visit this week will come just four days after Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris will have visited the state. Harris flew into Raleigh Saturday evening, where she helped pack aid boxes for people impacted by recent hurricanes at a downtown restaurant. She’ll hold a rally in Greenville this afternoon.
The presence of both members of the Democratic ticket in North Carolina just days apart, together with an eastern North Carolina bus tour that will be led this week by former President Bill Clinton, signals once again that Democrats believe they can win the state’s electoral votes for the first time since 2008 if they can mobilize their base. Walz’s planned visit to heavily Democratic Durham in an effort to build excitement at the start of early voting is clearly a part of that get-out-the-vote effort.

When George H. W. had the flu and barfed on the Japanese Prime Minister in 1992, the media covered it. When Hillary Clinton had the flu and *stumbled* from dehydration during a campaign event in 2016, the media covered it. (For DAYS.) When President Biden so much as stumbled a few *words* the media endlessly pounded on about his health. I would REALLY like to know why Trump’s health — mental and physical — is seemingly off limits. For real, why?

  5. Thank you, Jack.  Saw a post recently asking for “underrated” instruments.  Quite a few votes went to the oboe.  This is absolute proof it doesn’t deserve to be underrated by anyone.

  6. Time for a new stump speech!

Two national polls this morning show Harris support has declined in the last month.

    NBC NEWS (LV)
    September – Harris 49, Trump 44
    Now – Harris 48, Trump 48

    ABC/IPSOS (LV)
    September – Harris 52, Trump 46
    Now – Harris 50, Trump 48

  7. I think they landed a punch with the transgender surgery ad (their No. 1 buy), but certainly not a knockout. She had a very safe center-left background until running for president competing for the Warren/Sanders left lane. That’s when she checked yes on the ACLU form asking if she supported TAXPAYER-FUNDED transgender surgery for undocumented immigrants in prison. Trump camp almost exclusively running ads on it now, including NFL games, emphasizing the taxpayer funded factor.

  8. The course correction here is the Harris campaign needs to exclusively focus on scaring unaffiliated Trump leaners with the truth, that he is dangerous, unstable and old.

  9. Also CBS/YouGov out this morning..
    🔵 Harris 51%
    🔴 Trump 48%
    Shift from prior: 🔴 R+1

Some of this could be the unwinding of the post-debate bounce. The avg of these three this morning is Harris still +1.7, which is less than 1 pt lower than where most averages have her — which is likely right on the precipice for where she needs to be to win the EC

  10. Folks need a reality check and a history lesson.

Reality: Don-Old does not care about you.  He cares about himself and anyone who can do him a favor.  He is not like you.  He does not like you.

History: Strong men will not protect you, they will control you.

The MSM is not covering his ugly, unhinged rants.

ps – Reince Prebus is a prick.

  11. The transgender ads against Senator Brown here in Ohio and against Kamala Harris are non-stop on TV and YouTube.  They seem to think this will defeat Brown.  Rep. Marcy Kaptur is being attacked as a feeble-minded oldster.  Her opponent is a puppet of Trump who campaigns on his promise to “complete Trump’s wall” and other nonsense about “being for the working people…” Horseshit. all of it.

As Willie Geist does on his Sunday show, I salute a life well lived.
Elbert Wolfe was born on September 10, 1892, in Huntertown, Indiana. He dropped the El part and was known as Bert. He worked various jobs and was working with Eugene V. Debs during the Pullman strike and the infamous Presidential campaign when Debs was imprisoned. Bert was a veteran of the war to end all wars, WWI, as a railroad track repairman in France. He spent many a night in those awful trenches there.Bert returned and landed in Bellevue, Ohio in 1929. He married his love, Gladys, and worked until retirement on the railroad. My brother lived there and introduced me to Bert in 1979; Bert was 86. Bert had instant recall, knew every President’s history, and amazingly, every VP. He knew every county in every state and the state capitol location. He understood scientific theory and proof, leaving me stunned and quiet as he talked. I’d drive the exactly 100.0 miles from my house to his every month or so for the 2 years he retained health, and the few months he was in Clyde, Ohio, where he passed on this calendar day.Bert Wolfe passed on October 13, 1981.Gladys laughingly always called him “You old bastard!”Yeah…the damndest man I ever met. Hard core atheist and oh how he hated the Republicans.

  12. HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO

Harris/Walz senior adviser, Obama 2008/2012 campaign manager David Plouffe (https://x.com/davidplouffe) offers advice to online supporters in these final weeks:

“Share content, ads, interviews where Trump seems unstable because the argument is ‘Listen, he’s the oldest person ever to seek this office and he’s clearly not as stable as he was’, and he wasn’t particularly stable back then” (PodSaveAmerica).

My suggestion, share this gift link: Trump’s Speeches, Increasingly Angry and Rambling, Reignite the Question of Age.. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/06/us/politics/trump-speeches-age-cognitive-decline.html?unlocked_article_code=1.QU4.fXVk.ZHzrVMveyF0S&smid=url-share

  13. I’ve been seeing those transgender ads a lot this week. Each one features a different guy in Wisconsin talking about how hard he works to support his family and how Kamala supports using taxpayer dollars to provide transgender surgeries to undocumented immigrants in prison. Specifically showing someone in front of a mirror putting on eyeliner. They’ve all been from the “Preserve America PAC.” A lot of yard signs around here saying “Trump: Low Taxes. Kamala: High Taxes.” “Trump: Low Prices. Kamala: High Prices.”

  14. Corey, thanks very much for the ad spotting. I’ve got folks in some other states doing that, really appreciate it.

That’s Miriam Adelson’s PAC, they’re spending $40 million on those ads in battleground states.

  15. My great fear is maggers, especially evangelicals, are not seeking qualifications, competence, or even physical or mental fitness for office. They want the emptiest of vessels for their idea of God to fill up with whatever His Will be done according to their own dictates. Inmate Number P01135809 fits the bill completely.

  16. Seeing the ad spending numbers, poll movement and especially Corey’s helpful field report, I think they really have to deal with the issue. Say “I never campaigned on that proposal. I don’t know how my campaign five years ago checked that box but it’s just silly to think I’m campaigning on that or ever was”

This is just because someone on her 2020 campaign team checked yesterday on a box in  a human rights campaign questionnaire about public funding for transgender surgery for undocumented immigrants in prison.

But it’s the little stuff they exploit. Reminds me of Dukakis 1988 when his team wrongly thought ads on Willie Horton, his ACLU membership, gay adoption, were all silly stories not worth talking about. Lee Atwater and Roger Ailes hammered those into the campaign narrative and coverage, successfully portraying a largely undefined Dukakis as a dangerous liberal, brought him down double digits from convention to election day.

  17. David Plouffe on early voting data: “We like what we are seeing. Especially that we are not seeing positive results for all the Republican side’s vigorous efforts to increase their mail-in, absentee, early in-person. My guess is Trump’s persistent attacks on early voting wasted that effort. Now it seems like they are dependent on same-day among their most targeted voters — those with little or no history of showing up”

  18. I’m trying to imagine what else there is for him to threaten in the next few weeks before the election.
    WWHS. What Would Hitler Say?

  19. Obviously his violent images are visionary to his base who imagine themselves as foot soldiers of God. Appeals to reason do not reach them. Our only hope is outvoting them to an incontestable level.

  20. The evening news, the thing that those who don’t pay a lot of attention to news are most likely to see, those outlets need to step up now!

If they continue to sit on their hands and not air the angry, deranged ramblings of a wanna-be dictator, they will not exist next year.

Orange Adolf is a fascist, a racist, a misogynist, a con man, and adjudicated rapist, and he does not care about any of the folks who tick most of those same boxes.   Evangelicals are willfully ignorant; being duped by hucksters is right in their wheelhouse.

Folks need to pull their heads out of the sand, wise up, be brave, and speak up while it’s still possible.

Drove through two, small towns yesterday. One had zero grocery stores, but a tRUMP storefront (campaign?) with a “Convicted Felon ‘24” in the window. The other town was even more economically depressed; the most dilapidated houses had tRUMP signage. He is NOT going to do a damned thing FOR them.

  21. They just put VP seal on the podium, so she’s coming up. Interested to see if they fiddle with her stump speech. I think she needs more and harder hits on Trump.

  22. The envelope, please.
Our ballots have arrived and so have a slew of new text messages about the various down ballot choices we’ll be facing when we sit down pen in hand. Rather than annoyed at the increased pinging and dinging, I’m glad to have the information. Drop Box voting is so much more intelligent and informed. You can take your time. No more rushed decision-making over contra-positionally-worded propositions after long waits in line. I hope never to have to go back to in-person voting or again live in a red state where voting is difficult by design.

  23. AP headline from today’s speech; Harris taunts ‘weak and unstable’ Trump over failure to release his medical records

They are clearly targeting soft Trump leaners who just need a little more doubt about him to withhold their vote. Playing the old and unstable cards could do it

  24. No one said that electing the first woman to the office of PotUS was going to be easy…

    GotV 🦅 🇺🇸

  25. “Weak and unstable” a good enough line but I’d prefer simply saying “He’s crazy’. More chance it would go viral. Maybe that’s the line for Walz.

  26. Harris campaign travel this week:

    Sunday: Greenville, N.C.

    Monday: Erie, Pa.

    Tuesday: Detroit

    Wednesday: Pennsylvania

Thursday: Wisconsin: Milwaukee, LaCrosse, Green Bay

Friday: Michigan: Grand Rapids, Lansing, Oakland Co.

    Saturday: Detroit & Atlanta

  27. So the Scumps had a rally way out in the desert at Coachella.   How far out was it? Hit were so far out that the sun set twixt the rally site and the parking lot. So of course they had busses to get the people out there to the stage from the parking lot. So of course no one could leave.  So of course they didn’t pay the Bus company.  So of course the busses all disappeared.  So of course hundreds of magats were stranded out in the desert about a 2 hour walk to the parking lot.  After dark.

     Silly magats.

  28. Bill Clinton begin s 2-day Georgia blitz. Atlanta Journal Constitution: “Clinton’s campaign foray in Georgia for Harris had shades of ‘Bubbas for Bill’ energy. Clinton knocked former President Donald Trump and mocked vice presidential nominee JD Vance’s debate performance.

“Somebody who is really good at dividing, promoting resentment and anger, can do pretty well for a while,” Clinton said. “Sooner or later, for democracy to survive, you’ve got to figure it out.”

  29. Trump supporters were left stranded in the desert late at night with no lights, no food or water, and no way to get back to their vehicles other than to walk more than two hours because the campaign buses that had picked them up simply never returned.
    —Hill Report

  30. Saw the Bolton ad here, too.

Love the meme, Corey.  Hope there’s a big, blue roar on Election Day.

  31. Geraldo Rivera

    @GeraldoRivera
Trump and Vance constantly demonize undocumented immigrants, falsely attributing to them a crime wave that does not exist. The former president started it when he claimed these “illegals are poisoning the blood of our country,” and promising detention camps and mass deportations on day one. Trump even invoked genetics to explain the root cause of the nonexistent immigrant crime wave. “It’s in their genes and we got a lot of bad genes in our country right now.” From Aurora, Colorado to Springfield, Ohio the GOP platform stinks of horse shit.

  32. Will the MAGAts be smart enough to blame him or will they name the bus company?
Will this even get widespread play (along with other followers he has stranded and other companies he has stiffed) or will the story disappear as quickly as the ~bullet wound~ from his magic ear?

  33. If folks don’t vote blue, we’ll all be saying, “all of us are stranded here.”  If you think tRUMP-chella is chaos, you don’t want to see what tRUMP 2.0 would do to our country and the world.
Hoping that the comet and  the upcoming full moon  do a number on him first.

  34. The end of the video where the stranded MAGAt says someone needs to contact the Mayor of Coachella.   Ha!  I hope they are informed that they have been used and tossed aside.  I hope other MAGAts will realize that their vote is all he wants and that he will do nothing for them.

  35. if they can’t run a campaign, they can’t run the country

    Vote Harris/Walz 2024- Proven Leadership 🇺🇸

if trumpco continually stiffs contractors and vendors along the campaign, where are all of the hundreds of millions in contributions going
