Kamala and Oprah Team Up on TV

Last night on YouTube, Oprah Winfrey hosted an innovative digital town hall with Kamala Harris and state-of-the-art production values.

Variety: Harris fielded questions from a studio audience in Farmington Hills, Mich., in a format that echoed “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

On the futility of “life of the mother” exceptions.

  1. and here’s stephen last night on other news:

The GOP nominee for governor in North Carolina is a hot mess, there’s a new ad targeting young white male voters, and the former president is trying to scare New Yorkers into voting for him.

  2. more other news this a.m. from The Guardian

Good morning and welcome to our blog covering US politics in the run-up to the presidential election following another tumultuous evening where Donald Trump bemoaned a lack of support from Jewish voters just hours after allegations emerged that a Republican ally had referred to himself as a “black Nazi” on a pornography website.

Trump failed to mention the claims in a CNN report against Mark Robinson, North Carolina’s Republican gubernatorial nominee, during a speech on Thursday at the Israeli-American Council national summit in Washington.

In his speech, the former president lamented that he was trailing Kamala Harris among American Jews. Israel would likely cease to exist within two years should Harris win the election, and Jews would be partly to blame for that outcome because they tend to vote for Democrats, Trump argued.

If I don’t win this election – and the Jewish people would really have a lot to do with that if that happens because if 40%, I mean, 60% of the people are voting for the enemy – Israel, in my opinion, will cease to exist within two years.

Trump was citing a poll that he said showed Harris polling at 60% among American Jews. You can read our report on his speech here.

Meanwhile, according to CNN’s reporting, Robinson referred to himself as a “perv” in archived messages because he “enjoyed watching transgender pornography”. The messages were made between 2008 and 2012 on “Nude Africa”, a pornographic website that includes a message board.

He also allegedly expressed support for reinstating slavery. “Slavery is not bad. Some people need to be slaves. I wish they would bring it [slavery] back. I would certainly buy a few,” he wrote in October 2010. In March 2012, during the Obama administration, it was claimed he wrote: “I’d take Hitler over any of the shit that’s in Washington right now!”

CNN reported that Robinson, who would be North Carolina’s first Black governor, also attacked civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr in searing terms and once referred to himself as a “black Nazi”.

Robinson has denied the report – “Let me reassure you the things that you will see in that story — those are not the words of Mark Robinson,” – he said on a video posted to X. And said he is staying in the race.

The North Carolina Republican party is standing by him. “Mark Robinson has categorically denied the allegations made by CNN but that won’t stop the Left from trying to demonize him via personal attacks,” the party said in a statement.

After allegations against Robinson became public, the Harris campaign posted video clips of Trump praising the candidate.

  3. I couldn’t care less that he likes to watch porn. I care that he’s willfully ignorant about racial issues AND PROUDLY STUPID in the mold of Dumbass. I’m happy to see that apparently over half of NC isn’t buying his stupid shit – at least for now.

  4. Some more from last night…

Meryl Streep to Kamala just now on Oprah: “You’re going to win. I know you’re going to win. But I worry he won’t accept it.” Harris answered, “He’s already having trouble processing that 81 million people fired him”

Chris Rock on Oprah show: “I want to bring my daughters to the White House to meet this Black woman president. I’m ready to turn the page, man, all the hate and the negativity — it’s gotta stop.”

Julia Roberts: ““I get to travel internationally a lot, and I want people to say, ‘Oh, you’re American!’ and not ‘Oh, how’s it going? Is everything alright over there’” she said.

  5. Oprah and Kamala both spoke eloquently to the mother and sisters of Amber Thurman who died from lack of medical care in Georgia. Lawsuits do not bring closure or lessen the pain of loss, but I hope there will be consequences for the malpractice that resulted in her death.

  6. A short bit of beauty to go with your morning beverage,
There is so much good music out there and this young lady is just getting started.
    Jack

  7. The Harris campaign is good. That Oprah clip is so much the American myth that it makes me want to watch an episode of the Waltons.

    Jack

  8. As I said The Harris campaign is good, they are playing the American myth in a way we haven’t seen since Reagan and making it about their vision of America.  Watching both her and Walz, they could be competitive in Kansas if they wanted to put in the effort.  Not Missouri, as Missouri at the moment is way too tied to it’s Southern roots right now.
Which tells you what this election is really about.
    Jack

  9. A bass recorder?  Never saw one of those before.  Sounds very good, and she can play the shit out of it.  I had a friend who worked in the bike shop I worked in in college.  He was a baroque music nut, played in a recorder band and ultimately became a harpsichord builder. I know they had about 3 differently voiced recorders in his group, the largest being a tenor (I think), but it was nothing like that. He liked to play the sopranino.  tiny thing, looked like a toy.

  10. Just looked at my IRA, goodness, the stock market was very happy yesterday.
It looks like Biden and the Fed may have hit the mythical soft landing.
All of which begs the question.
Why TF are the polls showing this race tied? I just don’t believe it.
    Jack

  11. The performance of my IRA is 20% this year and could have been better it a chunk of it hadn’t been tied up in a 5+% CD. At the time 5% looked really good.
BTW, anybody with a S&P500 fund could have had this performance. If we had a Republican President, I’m certain this would be headline news. But now?  Crickets.

    Jack

  12. Ivy, oh wonderful.  Dumbass is going to attend the Alabama-Georgia game next weekend.  He’s been to 2 Bama games in the past – 2018 National Championship and 2019 LSU game.  Bama won the 2018 game against Georgia – by scoring 16 points in the 2nd half after Dumbass left at halftime with GA up 13-0.  Bama lost to LSU.  (Joe Goodman – who does a Bama sports blog, blames Dumbass for the Tua Tagovailoa fumble – unprovoked while in the open headed for a touchdown if he’d held the ball.)

  13. Thanks for showing those clips of Kamala with Oprah.  I watched the Patriots game on Thursday night football instead.  Didn’t go the Patriots way….  oh well.

  14. Pogo
I had a friend that introduced me to the recorder. At the time it was one of those “hippie things”. It reminded me of the plastic fluteaphone we learned to play in 4th grade. I could play twinkle twinkle little star on it. Which is more than my friend ever got out of his recorder.
But lately I’ve come to appreciate the different varieties of recorders and wooden flutes. When played well they have a beautiful sound.
    Jack

  15. I watch YouTube every day but I don’t need the pay version of YouTubeTV.  I searched for the show with zero results on free YouYube.  Today, Scarborough said the show is up online.  Anybody have the link?  I am not going to subscribe to a pay service I do not need since I have cable and a whole list of streaming services.

  16. Here is the entire 90-minute Oprah show with Kamala. For some reason they didn’t trim the clip, so you have to fast forward to the 13 minute mark for the start of the program..

  17. Buckle up – WaPo.

The Israel Defense Forces said Friday that it launched a strike on the Lebanese capital, although the target was unclear. Images from a southern Beirut suburb, where support for Hezbollah is strong, showed rubble in the streets and extensive damage to buildings and cars. Lebanon’s Ministry of Health said eight people were killed and 59 wounded.Earlier, Israel’s military said it had launched airstrikes targeting what it described as Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah fired about 140 projectiles into northern Israel on Friday, targeting what the militant group said were Israeli military sites.

Israel seems to have its hands full and probably isn’t concerned about “beating her”.

  18. There is so much data coming up now and a really encouraging stat stands out. On the economy she is narrowing the ‘who’s best to handle’ number to almost a tie in battleground states, although it’s still a double-digit lead for Trump nationally. That means her campaign messaging, ads, speeches etc are working because those are the states getting all the attention from her team.

Always helpful to find validation that your campaign is actually making a difference.

  19. Trump team is doing everything they can to make the final election outcome take as long as possible. The Trump-conttolled Georgia Board of Elections just enacted a rule to require election workers in every county to hand count all ballots on election night. https://x.com/bluestein/status/1837163646566199495?t=Hz6M7DDuBqYBQC6s40kbAg&s=19

In Pennsylvania they’ve blocked efforts to allow counting early votes before election day so that, as in Florida, they can be released immediately. If it’s a close race we might not know until Saturday who won, just like 2020.

  20. Interesting mail today: GOVERNMENT DOCUMENT ENCLOSED DO NOT DISCARD, return address “Election Mail Service – Austin, TX” for a person whose name we don’t know, and who has never lived here.    WTF?  Ideas?

  21. Craig
The hand count means  that the rural vote will come in first and the urban vote will dribble in for days  as they are more underfunded just by the nature of the world.  In Atlanta there will be as many voters in a precinct as a rural county yet  the county may have 7 or 8 polling places to the one in Atlanta and that many more people per 1000 voters.
I can hear the voter fraud calls from the rural districts now.
    Jack

  22. Well, I just found this on Reddit:

“I’m not sure where to direct this so I’m starting here. I received an envelope in the mail today from “Election Mail Service” out of Austin Texas. It had the correct address but not the correct name (the name on it isn’t even someone who has ever been associated with this address as far as I can tell). This automatically gave me red flags. On the envelope it says “government document enclosed do not discard”.
“I did a quick google search and it does seem to be some sort of fraudulent voter registration application. It’s obviously going straight in the trash but I was wondering if anyone else has received this? And also if anyone knows where I can go to report it? Luckily I know enough to be suspicious of mail like this, but I’m sure there are many Pennsylvanians who may not be. Stuff like this is really terrible for residents of a very important swing state.”

Trash it?   Return to sender? I mean, I hate to give it back to the bad guys.

  23. https://www.cbs58.com/news/hales-corner-police-alerts-residents-about-voter-registration-scam
Well, here it is; thru bastards sent it out to coincide with National Voter Registration Day.
APB to all media outlets and campaign socials to let folks know what’s happening.

“HALES CORNERS, Wis. (CBS 58) — The Hales Corners Police Department warned residents about a scam on Wednesday, Sept. 18.”
“According to police, some residents are receiving paperwork about voter registration. The envelopes have a return address from Austin, Texas.”
“Police say the documents look authentic and goes to the extent of putting names and addresses pre-filled to send back on forms. They say even though it looks real, it is not from the village and says it is a scam attempting to obtain information.”
“Police say if you receive one to discard it.”

  24. https://apnews.com/article/louis-dejoy-postmaster-postal-mail-jon-ossoff-73284ac15539bdb9923a6280b38ffb0a

“Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff seeks more control over postmaster general after mail meltdown”

“Ossoff’s proposed Postmaster General Reform Act would require the U.S. Senate to confirm a president’s appointment to the role. Right now, the position is appointed by the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors without confirmation from Congress. The legislation would also allow postmaster generals to stay in office for a maximum of two five-year terms. The position currently has no term limits.”
Senator, that’s  great, but a little slow…like the mail.

  25. Jack,

  26. I had lunch out today. Some woman sitting a few seats from me asked me who I was voting for. I didn’t answer, but she told me that she was voting for Trump. The conversation pretty much ended there. I saw an ad today from the Elon Musk-backed Trump PAC. It urged all Michigan voters to “Swamp the Vote”, so Trump can win the election.

  27. it’s rush hour and the freeway’s getting jammed up, don’t want to get my hopes up, trump’s got his dander up while Kam’s got her polls up,  never gonna give up, getting Katie Gavin’s views up, here on the trail dot cee cee 🎙️

  29. https://www.texastribune.org/2024/09/19/texas-state-fair-gun-ban-injunction-denied/

“Fair and law enforcement officials announced the gun ban last month, roughly a year after a gunman opened fire at the fair, injuring three people.”

“Last month, Paxton sued the city of Dallas and state fair officials over the new policy. Texas lawmakers also signed a petition pressuring State Fair officials to rescind it, saying the new policy makes the fair less safe.”

“Paxton wrote in his lawsuit that since Fair Park is owned by Dallas, the nonprofit’s policy change violates state law, which allows licensed gun owners to carry in places owned or leased by governmental entities, unless otherwise prohibited by state law. Texas law establishes that schools and courtrooms are considered gun-free zones and allows others, like amusement parks or educational institutions, to institute their own bans on firearms.”

“Neither the City of Dallas nor the State Fair of Texas can infringe on Texans’ right to self-defense,” Paxton wrote in his statement announcing the lawsuit.

“A Dallas County District Court struck down on Thursday Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton‘s request to temporarily block the State Fair of Texas’ new policy banning all firearms from its fairgrounds.”

  30. I just returned home from my weekly grocery shopping at Aldi’s-Defiance.  Lots of Harris-Walz signs in yards, some gigantic signs. Very few Trump signs.   We may not bring in the votes to award the electoral prize to Harris, but we will be heard.
Mark Robinson is dominating MSNBC.  What a  loser.  He is going to drag down North Carolina Trumpers and we are going to win there, a very important win for us.

  31. https://www.politico.com/news/2024/09/19/uncommitted-no-endorsement-harris-third-party-trump-00180002

    Michigan –

“A national pro-Palestinian group announced that it isn’t endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as she makes another swing on Thursday through battleground Michigan, where Muslim and Arab American community leaders and voters continue to express concern with the U.S.’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war.”

“But the Uncommitted National Movement, which arose out of organizing efforts to get people to vote “uncommitted” in Democratic primaries earlier this year in protest of President Joe Biden’s handling of the Israel-Gaza war, also said in its lengthy statement that it opposes Donald Trump. It said the former president’s “agenda includes plans to accelerate the killing in Gaza while intensifying the suppression of anti-war organizing.”

“And it urged against votes for any third-party candidates in November, which leaders say would help a Trump victory in key swing states.”

    We need their votes.

  32. Sad when your opponent has the incentive to promote your candidate’s words more than you do.

Harris campaign: “We built this tool for journalists, researchers and citizens who want a glimpse into Trump’s id. Tens of thousands of posts, videos, and images have been indexed and transcribed and are ready to search.”.. https://trumpstruth.org/

  33. i got some good responses from forwarding the Harris/Oprah event you initially posted here, Mr. C, keeping my peeps engaged

if not me, who?  if not now, when??? let’s gooo 🇺🇸

i’m not arguing with anybody this season, not debating anyone, not trying to win hearts and minds, (not tolerating trumpist domineering either), but just keeping my peeps engaged 🫡

Oh, people appreciated the Walz rally also, wouldn’t have been on their radar if i hadn’t forward it, he’s good for the dudely dudes in your orbit 👍

  34. https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/20/tech/sec-sanctions-elon-musk-testimony-twitter-probe/index.html

“The Securities and Exchange Commission intends to seek sanctions against Elon Musk over his failure to appear for testimony in an investigation related to his takeover of Twitter, now called X, the regulator said in a court filing Friday.”

“The agency is examining whether Musk followed the law when disclosing his purchases of Twitter stock and whether his statements in relation to the deal were misleading.”

“…three hours before his testimony was set to begin, Musk’s lawyer told the SEC that his client, who also runs SpaceX, had to urgently travel to the East Coast for the launch of the Polaris Dawn mission and would be unable to attend the testimony or reschedule to the following day, the filing states.”

“Musk’s excuse itself smacks of gamesmanship,” the SEC said in the filing. “SpaceX had already announced that it was targeting a Tuesday morning launch two days earlier… As the company’s Chief Technical Officer, Musk surely was already aware by then that SpaceX was targeting the morning of his SEC testimony for the launch.”

“Despite this advance knowledge, Musk did not notify the SEC of his intent to attend the launch until three hours before his testimony was to begin, and after the SEC spent thousands of dollars to fly three attorneys to Los Angeles.”

“The filing represents just the latest flare up of long-simmering tension between Musk and the SEC, which began in 2018 when the agency sued him for falsely tweeting that he had “funding secured” to take Tesla private.”

  35. https://www.texastribune.org/2024/09/20/ted-cruz-colin-allred-texas-senate-debate/

    Craig – Here ya go!

“U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and his Democratic challenger, U.S. Rep. Colin Allred, have agreed to a televised debate next month in Dallas, marking the first onstage faceoff between the two Senate nominees.”

“The debate is scheduled to take place Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. at WFAA-TV’s studio in downtown Dallas. It will be moderated by political reporters Jason Whitely of WFAA and Gromer Jeffers, Jr., of The Dallas Morning News, and will air on broadcast and digital platforms around the state, according to WFAA.”
