Sunday Serendipity,

Slava Ukraini style

A few days ago, a certain Russian ass claimed that there was no such thing as the Ukraine nation. He was wrong, of course, but it is not from the lack of trying by either the ass or his predecessors in the Soviet Union and Czarist Russia. If there was never a Ukraine national identity, why have they been trying to stomp it out for so long. One hundred and fifty years ago when Mykola Lysenko was busy collecting Ukrainian folk songs and writing operas in the Ukraine language Czarist Russia was doing its best to stop him from publishing his works. Here is a Wiki article that gives you a little background

As you listen to today’s selection, think some good thoughts and if you are so inclined a prayer for the People of Ukraine.

Enjoy, Jack

Ukraine Sets up ‘International Legion’ for Foreigners to Fight Russians (businessinsider.com)

Ukraine is establishing an International Legion for foreigners who want to come and fight against Russia, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday.
“Anyone who wants to join the defense of Ukraine, Europe and the world can come and fight side by side with the Ukrainians against the Russian war criminals,” the statement on the presidential website said.
According to the Regulations on Military Service in the Armed Forces by Foreigners and Stateless Persons, approved in 2016, foreigners can volunteer for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Territorial Defense Forces
“A separate subdivision is being formed of foreigners entitled the International Legion for the Territorial Defense of Ukraine. There is no greater contribution which you can make for the sake of peace,” the statement said.
Zelensky called for international solidarity against Russia and said in the statement that Russia’s invasion was “the beginning of a war against Europe.”
At his press briefing on Saturday morning, Zelensky said:  Every friend of Ukraine who wants to join Ukraine in defending the country, please come over. We will give you weapons. It will be announced very shortly, how this can be done. Everyone who is defending Ukraine is a hero.”
The foreign minister of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, said on February 27, via Twitter: “Foreigners willing to defend Ukraine and world order as part of the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine, I invite you to contact foreign diplomatic missions of Ukraine in your respective countries.”
The Kyiv Independent reporter Illia Ponomarenko tweeted on Saturday that he had received over 100 emails from foreigners wanting to join the fight for Ukraine.

(3) Zelensky accuses Russia of “terror,” calls for an international tribunal (cnn.com)

From CNN’s Victoria Butenko and Ivana Kottasová in Kyiv

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky Sunday accused Russian troops of targeting civilians, including children, and called for an international investigation into the conflict.
“What they are doing in Kharkiv, Okhtyrka, Kyiv, Odessa, and other cities and towns deserves an international tribunal. We are documenting their crimes. And there would have been many more of these crimes if it hadn’t been for our courageous defenders,” Zelensky said in a video address posted on his Facebook page.
“We have to call a spade a spade. Russia’s criminal actions against Ukraine show signs of genocide. I spoke about this with the UN Secretary-General,” he said, arguing that Russia should be stripped of its voting rights on the UN Security Council.
Zelensky said there was “not a single facility in Ukraine the Russian troops would consider an unacceptable target.”
In the capital Kyiv, residents awoke Sunday to find the city still firmly under Ukrainian control, despite two massive explosions some 30 kilometers, or about 18 miles, south of the city lighting up the sky overnight.
Fighting has broken out on the streets of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, after Russian forces entered the city
The Russian Ministry of Defense has previously said it was targeting only military infrastructure, saying in a statement: “The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation do not strike cities and towns, they take all measures to save the lives of civilians.”
But Zelensky said Sunday: “They lied when they said they would not target civilian population. Since the first hours of the invasion, Russian troops have been hitting civilian infrastructure.”
“This is terror,” he added, while Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said Russia was committing “war crimes.”
“They are fighting against everything and everyone,” Zelensky said. “They are [hitting] kindergartens, residential buildings, and even emergency vehicles. They use artillery and missiles against whole residential blocks where there have never have been any military infrastructure. Many Ukrainian cities and towns are surviving in conditions we previously had only during the World War II.”

Zelensky agrees to talk with Russia, but rejects Belarus as the meeting place
From CNN’s Victoria Butenko and Ivana Kottasová in Kyiv
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he would be willing to hold talks with Russia but rejected theRussian proposal for a meeting to be held in Belarus, a staging ground for Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
“We’ve heard a lot of talk about a meeting between Ukraine and Russia that might end this war and bring the peace back to us. Quite often [Minsk] is mentioned as the place for these negotiations,” Zelensky said in an address posted on the presidency website on Sunday morning.
“The location was not chosen by [Ukraine] nor by [Belarus]. It was chosen by the Russian leadership.”
Belarus has played a key role in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russian troops invaded through the Belarus border with support from Belarus’ government, according to Ukrainian officials. The Biden administration has sanctioned nine Belarusian defense firms for their support of the invasion.
Addressing Belarus directly, Zelensky said: “If there were no aggressive actions from your territory, we could talk in Minsk, your city. When you were neutral, we talked in Minsk. That’s why we’re not talking in Minsk now.”

Afghanis are tribal.

jack – A good find, but a sad piece. I am inclined to pray for Ukrainians, and I’m also inclined to wish something awful upon Vlad and his troop of invading murderers.

I sobbed during the cold open of SNL.

Z should not leave Ukraine, nor should he go to Belarus (they are at fault for allowing military staging on their land), as he will likely be disappeared.

What is there to discuss? At the meeting, Vlad should be arrested for war crimes.

How much harder will the world fight Russia if there is an assassination attempt on Z? Or, if the bastard succeeds?

Ukraine, Russia diplomats to meet on Belarus border | AP News

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The office of Ukraine’s president has confirmed that a delegation will meet with Russian officials as Moscow’s troops draw closer to Kyiv.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy office said on the Telegram messaging app that the two sides would meet at an unspecified location on the Belarusian border and did not give a precise time for the meeting.

The announcement on Sunday came hours after Russia announced that its delegation had flown to Belarus to await talks. Ukrainian officials initially rejected the move, saying any talks should take place elsewhere than Belarus, where Russia placed a large contingent of troops before it invaded Ukraine starting Thursday.

The meeting news came shortly after President Vladimir Putin ordered Russian nuclear forces put on high alert in response to what he called “aggressive statements” by leading NATO powers.

Zelenskyy’s office said Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, a Putin ally, “has taken responsibility for ensuring that all planes, helicopters and missiles stationed on Belarusian territory remain on the ground during the Ukrainian delegation’s travel, talks and return.“

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — In a dramatic escalation of East-West tensions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin ordered Russian nuclear forces put on high alert Sunday in response to what he called “aggressive statements” by leading NATO powers.

The order means Putin has ordered Russia’s nuclear weapons prepared for increased readiness to launch, raising the threat that the tensions could boil over into nuclear warfare. In giving it, the Russian leader also cited hard-hitting financial sanctions imposed by the West against Russia, including Putin himself.

Speaking at a meeting with his top officials, Putin directed the Russian defense minister and the chief of the military’s General Staff to put the nuclear deterrent forces in a “special regime of combat duty.”

“Western countries aren’t only taking unfriendly actions against our country in the economic sphere, but top officials from leading NATO members made aggressive statements regarding our country,” Putin said in televised comments.

The Russian leader this week threatened to retaliate harshly against any nations that intervened directly in the conflict in Ukraine, and he specifically raised the specter of his country’s status as a nuclear power.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk says the company’s Starlink satellite internet service has been activated in Ukraine amid the Russian invasion into the country.

Musk announced that the service was active on Twitter after a Ukrainian official asked for the billionaire to provide the technology on Saturday.

@elonmusk, while you try to colonize Mars — Russia try to occupy Ukraine! While your rockets successfully land from space — Russian rockets attack Ukrainian civil people! We ask you to provide Ukraine with Starlink stations and to address sane Russians to stand,” Ukraine’s vice prime minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, said in a Twitter post. Federov is also the country’s minister of digital transformation.

Starlink service is now active in Ukraine. More terminals en route,” Musk tweeted in response.

This comes as internet outages have been reported in parts of Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.

SpaceX has a network of almost 2,000 low-orbit satellites that help get internet to remote areas around the world.

Did anyone else see the interview with the lady with a parrot?  She acted as an interpreter for the reporter with many of the families who had traveled for days to get to the border with their children to leave Ukraine.  The beautiful bird who had come all the way with her snuggled under he jacket for warmth.  It kept coming out to sit on her finger, shoulder, and head while giving away ear nibbles and kisses before diving back in for warmth.

Somehow that beautiful bird seemed like a bright emblem of hope in a dangerous place.

NYpost:

An interpreter for a German newspaper broke down in tears Sunday while translating President Volodymyr Zelensky’s live speech

The woman, who works for Welt, can be heard choking back tears as she tries to translate Zelensky’s address for a German audience.

“Russia is on the path of evil, Russia must lose its voice in the UN,” the woman translated from the president’s defiant speech.

“Ukraine we definitely know …,” she said before dissolving in tears and being unable to go on.

The translator took a break to compose herself, according to the Telegraph, then finished the last part of the sentence, when Zelensky said, “what we are defending.”

Zelensky’s speech was watched around the world, as the steadfast presidentpromised his country he would not give up and condemned the Russians for what he called “state terrorism.

“The past night was tough – more shelling, more bombing of residential areas and civilian infrastructure,” he said. “There is not a single facility in the country that the occupiers wouldn’t consider as admissible targets.”

Ukraine’s president said Russia should be investigated forinternational war crimes.

Germany, which has come under fire for not providing enough aid to Ukraine, finally sent a shipment of 5,000 helmets to the Eastern country Friday after promising them last month.

Unlike its fellow NATO allies including the United States, Germany had originally said it would not send weapons to Ukraine but reversed the edict Saturday in a major policy shift.

The country announced it will send 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 “Stinger” surface-to-air missiles to Ukraine shortly, saying the invasion “threatens our entire post-war order.”

Watch the Egyptians, and the  Bosphorus as this mess drags on .
Ain’t nobody  going to be out cutting hard red winter wheat  this year , and shipping it out of Odessa.

Which reminds me of one of the greatest tales about the American West.
“The Tumblin’ Tumble Weed”  also known as the Russian Thistel.
To build out the railroads  in the West, we gave away huge blocks of land along their right of ways.
The Rail Roads  sent agents out  all over Europe to get immigrants  to settle along these lines .
One of the best was the agent working for the A.T.S.F ,  the Santa Fe  R.R.
He was working in Ukraine  , and Russia .
In sealed jars the women who came , carried the future of the American Myth on their laps .
Hard Red Winter Wheat .  It fit Kansas to a “T” .
But riding along with those big wheat seeds , were some really tiny ones the tumblin’ tumble weeds.
