CHESAPEAKE — While a mother bear and her three cubs enjoyed a long, relaxing nap high up in a tree in a Chesapeake neighborhood Monday, it was a different situation for the folks on the ground below.
Multiple police officers stayed busy throughout the day, blocking nearby streets and trying to keep onlookers away. Members of the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources also stayed close, ready to take action if needed.
TV reporters and onlookers got as close as they could, with their cameras trained up at the resting bears. Later in the day, folks with long lens cameras set up shop, boasting to each other about the photos they got. Residents of the houses nearest to the site, meanwhile, remained on edge, wondering how long they’d have to wait for the bears to move on so that their usual activities could resume.

Anderson said the four black bears will climb down and walk away when they’re ready, and that their trip down Bruin Drive is likely an isolated incident.
“Our expectation is, if we leave them alone they’ll climb down and go back to their natural habitat,” he said.

  2. “leave them alone and they’ll go home” sound familiar?

remember the “peaceful protestors” comments and what’s happening now and will no doubt take place next week on the anniversary.

Capitol attack insurrectionists flock to fundraising websites to raise defense funds | US Capitol attack | The Guardian

Portraying themselves as maligned American patriots and ‘political prisoners’, the far-right groups have raised over $2m
    […]
Several of the highest-profile participants in the “stop the steal” insurrection which attempted to disrupt Joe Biden’s certification as US president are raising substantial sums on fundraising sites. They include members of the far-right Proud Boys and many of the 6 January individuals being detained in a Washington DC jail, awaiting trial for allegedly attacking police officers.
In their donations appeals they are drastically rewriting history. Their scripts transform 6 January from what it was – a violent attempt to overthrow the democratic results of the 2020 presidential election on behalf of Donald Trump – into the fantasy that it was a peaceful and patriotic protest to uphold voter integrity.
    […]
A tally by CNN in September estimated that the total amount raised to support those accused of 6 January crimes may have exceeded $2m.
Experts who track extremist fundraising online warn that the impressive flow of resources to alleged violent insurrectionists could have long-term consequences by giving succor to anti-democratic movements.
Megan Squire, a senior fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center, told the Guardian that though the money was put to a variety of uses, from providing bail money and legal fees to paying bills, the scale of the funding was worrying.
“However it is used, there are consequences,” she said. “It definitely keeps them going and keeps them in business, which is not good for any of us.”

  5. Buddy Rich – when asked in preparation for the surgery he died from “Is there anything you can’t take?” Rich replied, “Yeah, country music.”

And of course the classic stupid redneck last line – “Hey, watch this.”

  6. There’s a nice little list of last words at Mentalfloss. One of my favorites is from playwright Wilson Mizner:

Mizner was best known for his bon mots, though he was a successful playwright, too. He’s known for the line, “Be nice to people on the way up because you’ll meet the same people on the way down.” When Mizner was on his deathbed, a priest said, “I’m sure you want to talk to me.” Mizner told the priest, “Why should I talk to you? I’ve just been talking to your boss.”

Little Feat filched that first line for one of their better songs.

Coronavirus cases are soaring across the United States as the more transmissible omicron variant spreads, but hospitalizations remain “comparatively low,” Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told reporters Wednesday.
The seven-day rolling average of newly reported infections is about 240,000, up by 60 percent from the previous week, she said, although hospitalizations rose by only 14 percent during the same period.
Walensky said hospitalizations tend to lag behind infections by roughly two weeks….

  8. aaahhhh crap!…  I can’t think of any famous last words at the moment…

but there are numerous times I’ve left my bird feeders out at night saying… they’ll be safe, no bears tonight…  only to find them laying on the ground and half shredded the next morning….

  9. James Brown in Paris 1968.  James Brown as you’ve probably never seen him.   The kind of astounding concert that you just kind of put on and it’s just there in the background.

“The JSTARS system can track ground vehicles when they are moving, collect imagery, and relay photos and tracks of moving formations to ground and air commanders, which in turn would allow the US and its allies to monitor Russia’s force posture. An on-board antenna has a 120-degree field of view that can cover nearly 20,000 square miles to monitor ground movements, according to an Air Force fact sheet, and can also detect aircraft.“

“Abbott, meanwhile, is focusing relentlessly on border security and trying to tie O’Rourke to President Joe Biden, who has abysmal poll numbers in Texas.“

    I still love POTUS Joe

“How hard will the latest COVID-19 surge, fueled by the omicron variant, hit Texas? As case numbers pile up, Abbott could be back in a familiar position: stuck between Democrats who want to see more aggressive statewide action to combat the virus — or at least a restoration of local control — and some fellow Republicans who believe Abbott should act as if the pandemic is effectively over. So far, with omicron bearing down on Texas, Abbott has sided more with the latter group.“

A little bit ago I wrote about the youth of today, with optimism.  Unfortunately, during that time I failed to think of the Gen ?, teens and twenties, who failed to watch any television or movies created prior to 2015.  Sometimes I watch videos of them on bridges throwing magnets over into the waters to find metal objects.  Or, the few entrepreneurs doing things like buying the contents of storage units.  They are not stupid, they are ignorant of anything prior to the date they are being videoed.

It is sad they are so ignorant as to not be able to identify objects from 2000 and earlier.  Sigh.
