Soulful, Sunday Blues

For the music lover we are living in a remarkable time. The amount of music we have access to is over whelming. From around the world, not just from big money, music city, places but from every small group in small towns around the world with a phone and internet access. Also going back through the 140 years of commercial recordings. An it is all right here on which ever devise I want to use to stream the music on.


With all of this music to choose from it is a little irritating that You tube can only seem to toss up the same stuff and you have to play tricks with it to get it out of it’s favorite rut. It is why I’ve been enjoying the “discovery” mode on my Pandora “stations”. Thanks to it my “The Band” station offered todays selection by Big Mama Thornton

I’ve put together a play list that has Thornton, Nina Simone, and Sarah Vaughn. I may add more to it later.

Kick back with a good cup of coffee this morning and relax, after all it is Sunday

    Willie Mae Thornton (December 11, 1926 – July 25, 1984), better known as Big Mama Thornton, was an American rhythm-and-blues singer and songwriter. She was the first to record Leiber and Stoller’s “Hound Dog“, in 1952, which became her biggest hit, staying seven weeks at number one on the Billboard R&B chart in 1953 and selling almost two million copies. Thornton’s other recordings included the original version of “Ball and Chain“, which she wrote.

    Her recording of Hound Dog, written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller in 1952, and later recorded by Elvis Presley, reached Number 1 on the Rhythm & Blues Records chart. According to Maureen Mahon, a music professor at New York University, “the song is seen as an important beginning of rock-and-roll, especially in its use of the guitar as the key instrument”

    Thornton’s birth certificate states that she was born in Ariton, Alabama, but in an interview with Chris Strachwitz, she claimed Montgomery, Alabama, as her birthplace, probably because Montgomery was better known than Ariton. She was introduced to music in a Baptist church, where her father was a minister and her mother a singer. She and her six siblings began to sing at early ages. Her mother died young, and Willie Mae left school and got a job washing and cleaning spittoons in a local tavern. In 1940 she left home and, with the help of Diamond Teeth Mary, joined Sammy Green’s Hot Harlem Revue and was soon billed as the “New Bessie Smith“. Her musical education started in the church but continued through her observation of the rhythm-and-blues singers Bessie Smith and Memphis Minnie, whom she deeply admired.

    Hurricane Ida strengthens into a ‘dangerous Category 4’ storm overnight; see path | Hurricane Center | nola.com

    Hurricane Ida strengthened from a Category 2 hurricane to a major Category 4 hurricane over a couple of hours Sunday morning, according to National Hurricane Center forecast reports.

    As of 2 a.m., Ida had maximum sustained winds of 130 mph, which makes it a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Category 3 hurricanes and higher are considered “major” hurricanes.

    A National Hurricane Center meteorologist called Ida a “dangerous Category 4 hurricane.”

    My Amazon music has been a source of artists never heard before simply by checking the suggestions when I’ve hunted for a familiar performer.  Found a new one a couple of days ago:  Jessica Mauboy

    She has a great voice on ballads such as Flame Trees, but a definite Tina Turner vibe when performing hot.

  21. patd – something of interest in the disinformation war by the gqp, puttin, and the white nationalists I saw a few posts on Twit and FB that flat out stated the caskets had been received and the ceremony was over, an hour before Biden flew to Dover AFB.  If a president says they are going to Dover AFB you can bet the ceremony will not take place prior to them standing right there.  But, when the haters of America get up early they spend the time doing their best to destroy America.

  28. Jack, that tiny orange spot just west of Elkins isn’t East Bumfuck. It’s right in the Buckhannon area – a flat area with a river running through it. No problem there. 🙄The NOAA map notwithstanding we’re forecast to get a total of about 3” Wednesday into Thursday. That’s a lot of rain in 24 hours, but nothing we can’t deal with.
