Soulful, Sunday Blues

For the music lover we are living in a remarkable time. The amount of music we have access to is over whelming. From around the world, not just from big money, music city, places but from every small group in small towns around the world with a phone and internet access. Also going back through the 140 years of commercial recordings. An it is all right here on which ever devise I want to use to stream the music on.

With all of this music to choose from it is a little irritating that You tube can only seem to toss up the same stuff and you have to play tricks with it to get it out of it’s favorite rut. It is why I’ve been enjoying the “discovery” mode on my Pandora “stations”. Thanks to it my “The Band” station offered todays selection by Big Mama Thornton

I’ve put together a play list that has Thornton, Nina Simone, and Sarah Vaughn. I may add more to it later.

Kick back with a good cup of coffee this morning and relax, after all it is Sunday

Enjoy, Jack

  1. thanks, jack. here’s wiki on big mama:

Willie Mae Thornton (December 11, 1926 – July 25, 1984), better known as Big Mama Thornton, was an American rhythm-and-blues singer and songwriter. She was the first to record Leiber and Stoller’s “Hound Dog“, in 1952, which became her biggest hit, staying seven weeks at number one on the Billboard R&B chart in 1953 and selling almost two million copies. Thornton’s other recordings included the original version of “Ball and Chain“, which she wrote.

Her recording of Hound Dog, written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller in 1952, and later recorded by Elvis Presley, reached Number 1 on the Rhythm & Blues Records chart. According to Maureen Mahon, a music professor at New York University, “the song is seen as an important beginning of rock-and-roll, especially in its use of the guitar as the key instrument”

    […]

Thornton’s birth certificate states that she was born in Ariton, Alabama, but in an interview with Chris Strachwitz, she claimed Montgomery, Alabama, as her birthplace, probably because Montgomery was better known than Ariton. She was introduced to music in a Baptist church, where her father was a minister and her mother a singer. She and her six siblings began to sing at early ages. Her mother died young, and Willie Mae left school and got a job washing and cleaning spittoons in a local tavern. In 1940 she left home and, with the help of Diamond Teeth Mary, joined Sammy Green’s Hot Harlem Revue and was soon billed as the “New Bessie Smith“. Her musical education started in the church but continued through her observation of the rhythm-and-blues singers Bessie Smith and Memphis Minnie, whom she deeply admired.

Hurricane Ida strengthens into a ‘dangerous Category 4’ storm overnight; see path | Hurricane Center | nola.com

Hurricane Ida strengthened from a Category 2 hurricane to a major Category 4 hurricane over a couple of hours Sunday morning, according to National Hurricane Center forecast reports.

As of 2 a.m., Ida had maximum sustained winds of 130 mph, which makes it a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Category 3 hurricanes and higher are considered “major” hurricanes.

A National Hurricane Center meteorologist called Ida a “dangerous Category 4 hurricane.”

Biden says he has coordinated with governors, electric utilities on Hurricane Ida | Reuters

    […]

“We’ve prepositioned food, water, generators and other supplies in the area. Power restoration and mobile communications support teams are also en route. We’ve also closely coordinated with the electric utilities to restore power as soon as possible,” Biden said at a briefing with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

    […]

Biden said FEMA deployed 500 emergency response personnel in Texas and Louisiana ahead of the storm, in addition to 2,000 FEMA workers already supporting the COVID response in the region.

[wonder how this compares with “heck-uva job” dubya’s prep efforts for katrina; and, BTW, they still haven’t gotten that hurricane laura aid that the other former guy promised last year]

  5. Great selection Jack.  Thank you.

My Amazon music has been a source of artists never heard before simply by checking the suggestions when I’ve hunted for a familiar performer.  Found a new one a couple of days ago:  Jessica Mauboy

She has a great voice on ballads such as Flame Trees, but a definite Tina Turner vibe when performing hot.

  6. Excellent choice Jack.  I loves me my blues and rhythm and blues, and this is. Blues with an exclamation point – before it became mainstream.  Big Mama was a treasure. And Nina and Sarah…it don’t get better.

  7. There are only two kinds of songs; there’s the blues, and there’s zip-a-dee-doo-dah.

i don’t agree, but it’s a nice quote as quotes go.

  8. WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States has the capacity to evacuate the approximately 300 U.S. citizens remaining in Afghanistan who want to leave before President Joe Biden’s Tuesday deadline, national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Sunday. He also said the administration’s current plan is not to have “an ongoing embassy presence” after the final U.S. troop withdrawal.

I say kid because he at one time was a kid hanging around at our Music Shack.

  10. the hill:

President Biden on Sunday will meet in Delaware with the families of U.S. service members who died last week in a suicide bombing in Kabul, Afghanistan, and witness the return of their remains.

The president and the first lady left early Sunday for Dover Air Force Base, where they will meet with the families and participate in a dignified transfer.

well, guess that answers dave granlund’s cartoon to which prez has/had the guts to show up

lest we forget this of the former guy according to huffpost:

In the real world, Trump has traveled to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware exactly four times ― fewer than half as many times as his vice president ― and avoided going at all for nearly two years after getting berated for his incompetence by the father of a slain Navy SEAL, according to a former White House aide who spoke on condition of anonymity.

  11. Bob Hines Trio.  Local.  Used to play at The Hotel James, the black-owned business where all the touring black entertainers stayed.
Used to hang there quite a bit. John Major, the drummer, used to play with our band here and there.
    Good times.

  12. Jack… excellent choice of Big Mama Thorton…

There’s one more Thorton we should remember this day.  Our old trailmixer friend Carol Thorton.  She lives in Lake Charles Louisiana.   I hope she’s safe.

  13. Well, the day settles in and it’s time to turn my somewhat jagged attention to matters much more pertinent than reminiscing over myriad articles discarded into the Blues lost and found box.
Hurricanes, explosions, and can I fit a trash rollout into a space not quite wide enough.

  14. Looks like Ida is getting ready to tear up the delta, then a stop by Nashville as she visits Pat and Pogo in kentucky and west virginia.
You two had better watch out and don’t try to cross any low water bridges, there is going to be a lot of water running off them hills.
    Jack

  15. On the Noaa Website the rainfall map has New Orleans getting 15 to 20 inches of rain. and that is before the storm surge tops the levies.
    Jack

  16. Pogo
    from the Noaa rainfall map
There is one little spot in WV that has the potential of 10 inches of rain. I’m assuming the fates deliberately picked your house for attention.

  17. patd – something of interest in the disinformation war by the gqp, puttin, and the white nationalists I saw a few posts on Twit and FB that flat out stated the caskets had been received and the ceremony was over, an hour before Biden flew to Dover AFB.  If a president says they are going to Dover AFB you can bet the ceremony will not take place prior to them standing right there.  But, when the haters of America get up early they spend the time doing their best to destroy America.

  18. bbronc, guess next they’ll claim this was photoshopped or taken some other time than today

  19. this and photo above from norfolk’s WAVY:

DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. (AP) — President Joe Biden met in solemn privacy Sunday with the families of the 13 U.S. troops killed in the suicide attack near the Kabul airport and became the fourth commander in chief to bear witness as the remains of the fallen returned to U.S. soil from Afghanistan.
First lady Jill Biden joined the president at Dover Air Force Base to grieve with loved ones as the “dignified transfer” of remains unfolded, a military ritual for those killed in foreign combat.
    […]
Biden held his hand over his heart and appeared to shut his eyes in prayer as each flag-draped transfer case was taken off a military aircraft and put on an awaiting vehicle.
Family members of the fallen often travel to Dover to be present for the return of the remains of their loved ones to American soil. Thursday’s attack left so many casualties that military officials said the Dover Fisher House, which the Defense Department provides for the families of the fallen, was not large enough to accommodate all the grieving families, so some loved ones stayed off base.
The only sounds that be heard on the flight line were the quiet commands of honor guards who carried the transfer cases, the hum of the C-17 Globemaster II aircraft that transported the fallen, and the occasional sob of a grieving mourner.
Biden was joined by several top aides, including Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Eleven of the fallen service members’ families chose to allow their transfers to be open to media coverage.

  20. R.I.P.  ed asner

Edward Asner as Lou Grant and Mary Tyler Moore as Mary Richards in a scene from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" in 1970.

… in an iconic scene when Asner’s Grant appears to compliment Moore’s Richards: “You know what? You got spunk.”

As the bashful Richards soaked up that apparent accolade, Asner’s Grant growled back with a piece of comic timing that’s still revered in TV history: “I hate spunk!”

  21. Jack, that tiny orange spot just west of Elkins isn’t East Bumfuck. It’s right in the Buckhannon area – a flat area with a river running through it. No problem there. 🙄The NOAA map notwithstanding we’re forecast to get a total of about 3” Wednesday into Thursday. That’s a lot of rain in 24 hours, but nothing we can’t deal with.
