What were your favorite Saturday/Sunday afternoon movies -? The ones you flop on the couch & veg out to. Dog Day Afternoon, (Original)Taking of Pelham One Two Three, Guys & Dolls … you could get lost in these. Sometimes it’s good to just get away.
“Geez so the context is Bill was saying the financial industry unfairly blamed?”
craig, have to disagree with you on that rush to judgement. he said at the same time: “The inequality problem is rooted in the shareholder-first mentality and the absence of training for the jobs of tomorrow”…. that sounds like he’s blaming (not excusing) wall street.
and the silly “shoot every third person on wall street” was a sarcastic ad absurdum to show the silly simplistic slogans of the opponent. you must admit the bernies do seem to want to burn the whole barn down just to kill the rats….. might be efficient but not an effective pest control when you also lose the cows, the hay and the tractor.
“HRC isn’t even a real Democrat by historical standards.”
bid, and which historical standard was that…. that long time the dems were the party of racism?
Exactly! You have your finger on the pulse of the nation :0)… Bernie and people of his persuasion want to burn the house down and take all of us with them.. It’s too simplistic to blame Wall Street and the banks for destroying the middle class.. Definitely they are part of the problem along with some faulty trade deals, lack of unions( real wage growth) and the list go’s on and on.. HRC strikes the right balance of what’s possible working within the system we have.. I hope she keeps right on raising money and campaigning her heart out.. LOL, makes me think of ABBA and “Money money money, it’s a rich man’s world”. Hopefully she can work her magic and get a Congress that will work with her should she be elected President…
“Quite a few people seem confused about the current state of the Democratic nomination race. But the essentials are simple: Hillary Clinton has a large lead in both pledged delegates and the popular vote so far. (In Democratic primaries, delegate allocation is roughly proportional to votes.) If you ask how that’s possible — Bernie Sanders just won seven states in a row! — you need to realize that those seven states have a combined population of about 20 million. Meanwhile, Florida alone also has about 20 million people — and Mrs. Clinton won it by a 30-point margin.
To overtake her, Mr. Sanders would have to win the remaining contests by an average 13-point margin, a number that will almost surely go up after the New York primary, even if he does much better than current polls suggest. That’s not impossible, but it’s highly unlikely.”
Since most 401K’s are tied to Wall Street? Let us destroy Wall Street while the baby boomers are busy draining their accounts at a record pace. I think Bill was drawing an analogy to Trump who could shoot anyone in the (Wall Street) to Bern…Bern could also get away with shooting every third WS human and the NRA would send him even more money. Trump and Wall Street.
“Charlie, don’t let anyone ever tell you that Wall Street is anything but a casino for suits.” A billionaire guest to Charlie Rose
” In this case, it’s Trump often-told brag that he’s donated more than $100 million to charity in the last five years. It’s a boast that plays into his preferred image of a business tycoon who’s still looking out for the little guy. His campaign even compiled a list of nearly 5,000 contributions as supposed proof of his selflessness.
But according to the Washington Post, there’s no record of Trump donating any of his own money to charity in the last five years.”
You know that it would be untrue; You know that I would be a liar; If I was to say to you; Girl, we couldn’t get much higher

I am a registered independent voter in the state of New Mexico. Our state system is a closed system during the primaries. In 2004 when I had a few thousand to donate, I became involved in the local dem party. I was an outsider. For years many of these people gave-up weekends and family events to dedicate their time to the party. So, when I was appalled at some of the favoritism, stupidity, etc? Of course the party people are the ones to decide and who was I to waltz-in and believe it was all about my ideas? Plus, I never changed my party affiliation to dem. I could not even vote in the state dem caucus. I was naive. And selfish. Fortunately, I can no longer afford to donate like that again. But, a true dem has been there to do the hard work and share the money. Sanders doesn’t want to share as he does not want to support Clinton…well, she doesn’t care to support him either and he has taken some questionable cash. He is an outsider and just became a dem.
For Bernie Sanders supporters, the concept of socialism was about taking money away from those at the top and redistributing it to those in need. Yet Bernie Sanders has done exactly the opposite: he has taken money from those at the bottom and redistributed it to those at the top, including himself and his closest friends. Sanders may not be legally able to keep most of the money he has raised from the campaign but that doesn’t matter. What matters is that when all is said and done Sanders will have made a name for himself and will have created a marketable persona, one that people will pay to see and be exposed to. He’ll be able to confirm he is, in fact, a millionaire. Heck, after he retires from office he may even go on a paid speaking tour, a la Hillary Clinton. Whatever he ends up doing, Sanders will do so knowing that in roughly 18 months, he will have stolen over $100 million from millions of Americans who were convinced that he was an honest politician simply because he told us he was.
I knew you had flapper in you, patd!
I am beginning to wonder if Bernie is doing more harm than good to his own cause with his substance-free jingoism, allowing the impression that reformers want to tear down Wall Street and giving its defenders the opening to call them naïve. Where’s Elizabeth Warren when we need her? She backed up her rhetoric, and made the point that reforming Wall Street is pro-business, pro-investor. Heck I’d be satisfied with a president who, for once, appoints independent, serious regulators to the SEC.
To your question, SJ, not a movie but my Saturday regular as a kid:
“Out of the clear blue of the Western sky comes Sky King!”
speaking of bernie barn burners, here she is to explain (and also to tout a movie)
as we say here on the trail… reach for nabisco!
patd… I got caught up in a Red Sox game and forgot to put on Maher… have to catch it on demand.
sj… I tended to get away in books… now and as a kid.
Im like the man behind the microscope…i want to see what it does not what someone tells me what it does……..and so far…..the Ds and the Rs dance to the same rhythm …….Wall st, the military complex, the large corps, Pharms……they take turns playing the music the exsites them both to dance to the same tune……….woke up with my morning cartoons….and animal planet…..a great way to see the world as it should be…..later going for a mountain bike ride, and tai chi in a quite place……
Pat, thanks for that link……..talk about it later on……..what u doing tonight?
Ha, Pat, thanks for grabbing that. I loved the opening shot of the plane turning away from the camera, engines roaring. The plane was the star of the show.
sj & craig, thinking about those nabisco oreos, fig newtons, lorna doones etc, next question: what was your favorite kid cookie, soda pop and or candy fix?
Oh, and they both dance to the tunes that Netenyahoo and
AIPAC drum up……there isnt a tune they play that the Rs and the Ds wont dance to…..
Necco wafers — the all chocolate roll
solar – let’s dance to the music!
So, it’s OK to redistribute money upward, but not downward, or, to even just making sure the middle doesn’t slide further down? (Now, does that sound like I’ve turned Repug to you, Sea? Or, by “red” did you mean commie?) 🙂
PatD – Bernie seems closer to FDR than Hillary does. Her support of Wall Street and her corporate cronyism is pretty Repug-nant.
What did they serve at that dinner in SFO? Jewels dipped in gold? Over $300k per couple for the good seats and $100k per couple for the cheap seats. I would love to see the guest list and know what she said.
The Clintons just don’t get it. They will understand in November.
Saturday afternoon favorites: “The Princess Bride” and anything by John Hughes.

I am reeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaallly fed up with the awful gawdoffal length of this campaign, the myriad missteps of the candidates, and the appalling lack of gravitas demonstrated by everyone concerned with it in the last week.
remember hearing this music sat. morns on some kind of kiddy show as the theme song but can’t remember the show. shows ya how much more important music is to the aging brain than context.
anybody remember what that program was about?

Although I am not interested in sports, I grew up listening to baseball. I would stretch out on the sofa, game starting, top of the first. Then I would wake up game ending bottom of the ninth. Now it is if I sit too long it matters little if the game is on or it is an hour after the last relaxation time.
A beautiful weekend in the D.C. region. Much to do outside that has been on hold for a month. At least i am getting some done while I think of the brisket that will be in the smoker tomorrow.
I did vote Thursday. It was a good day.

and here’s bernie as mr nyr….
and blueid, franklin d he ain’t
I kinda like movies.
I saw Sky King (Kirby Grant) perform at the Oregon State Fair in the 60’s. He was a very good singer and was nice to the kids.
Craig…the posting problem I e-mailed you about has corrected itself.
Interesting report that Bernie Sanders “ambushed” Pope Frances. Only Common Courtesy in greeting.
For me Sanders is getting to be a self-centered, arrogant bore barely worth my time. If he finagles a nomination in any way, I’m starting to think that if it weren’t for SCOTUS, a write in is looking really, really good.
Also the birthday song sung to the tune of the Merry Widow Waltz
Happy Birthday Happy Birthday just for you.
Happy Birthday and may all your good dreams come true.
When you blow out the candles, one light stays aglow.
That’s the sunshine of your smile where ere you go.
FDR spent a lifetime working for the Democratic Party. His loyalty, humility, and pragmatism made him a great leader.
The non-Democrat in the race, Senator Sanders, lacks all of the qualities FDR exhibited.
A colleague of mine visited Warm Springs and brought me a framed copy of the final unfinished portrait which is displayed on my living room wall.
Great films I can’t pass when they pop up on TV
Cry Freedom; 84 Charing Cross Road: Same Time Next Year; Casablanca, Wizard of Oz, Singin’ In The Rain; African Queen; All About Eve; High Noon; High Society; and Torch Song Trilogy.
Good list Jamie…
Great Shakes; we kept the plastic cup long after they stopped selling the powdered mix to make the drinks.
Chic-o-sticks, Cherry Mash bars (not the far, inferior Bing bars), and Bub’s Daddy grape-flavored bubblegum.
Fruit Float; weird stuff in a can. I only had in one time, but it was delicious.
Many live-action shows on Saturday. I especially like “Land of the Lost.” (I’m a Bernie supporter, so that’s to be expected.) 🙂 But my faves were, “The Banana Splits,” and “H.R. Puff’n Stuff.”
Not a huge fan of “Sigmond The Sea Monster” nor of ” Lidsville,” but they were OK as background noise.
There was a show with chimps in drag called, “Lancelot Link.” I detested that show; TV off.
Love and Death, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Duck Soup, The Fatal Glass of Beer, Spies [1923], A Fistful of Dollars, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, Nosferatu [Max Schreck], Nosferatu [Werner Herzog], Der Letzte Mann, M, Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, To Catch a Thief, Alexander Nevsky, Ivan the Terrible, Who Killed Roger Rabbit, Robin Hood [Flynn], The White Buffalo, Treasure Island [Rbt Newton], Long John Silver, Black Beard, Scarface, Little Caesar, Little Women [Ryder], yadda, yadda, yadda….
Anything with Cary Grant and/or Katherine Hepburn.
thanks, Jamie. took a listen from your link. no wonder I only remember the theme song. no where near as exciting as space patrol or sky king…. or playing jacks for that matter.
nothing beat the lone ranger or spookiness on stormy nights of inner sanctum and the shadow
My mother was a waitress and my bedtime was 8 :00 pm so I was sent to bed and would read under the covers with a flashlight to read under the covers which is how I discovered a great book list on computer Flashlight Worthy . I still love Inner Sanctum and The Shadow Knows. To this day it is fun to listen to KIXI.com radio with the old time music and radio on computer.
Blue ind…. I’ve never heard of any of that stuff. My mother was a great cook and an even better baker. I was a teenager before I had my first store bought cookie. She made the most awesome donuts. I think she opened the windows so every kid in the neighborhood could smell them and show up at the house.
xr, you left out aunti mame
and blueid, you left out aunti mame herself, rosalind russell… along with hepburn they played a lot of strong women roles but always those with a sense of humor.
renee, I think I was one of those kids who came for the cookies.
my mother wasn’t much of a cook but a heck of a good sport and my brothers chums loved playing poker or monopoly or darts with her.
Sorry Craig
Cupid did not win the Arkansas Derby. Final points for the Derby lineup tomorrow.
I left out Auntie Mame & Roslind Russell
Get set for October 1973 all over again. Just watch the price of crude oil spike up. It looks like Saudi Arabia will cut production which will drive up the price of crude and enable fracking for oil again. There is no such thing as free market. There is a lot of controlled production.
When the September 11, 2001, Commission Report was release I purchased a paper back copy and downloaded the PDF because I have a special connection with the events of that day. I have looked at the paper back copy and cannot find any reference to any 28 pages missing from the report. If and when they are released they will be so severely redacted that they will be meaningless.
Both the Bush and Obama administrations have, and continue to, demonstrate how corrupt the Republican and Democratic Parties are, to the determent of the American people, in order to serve the special interests. The last time that I read the Constitution, the President has the obligation to protect the citizens of the United States, not of Saudi Arabia.
After years of pushing to gain public release of 28 secret pages of a report on the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, former U.S. Sen. Bob Graham said he got a call from the White House on Tuesday.
The 28 pages were classified at the request of the FBI. Graham has been pushing for release of the documents since 2011 when he learned that the FBI had failed to disclose part of its investigation that included reports that high-ranking Saudi Arabian officials provided financial aid and other help to the 19 hijackers who flew airplanes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. He says the FBI initially denied there were such reports but has since turned over 80,000 pages in a federal lawsuit seeking the release of all reports on the investigation.
Graham said he believes recent news reports on the secrecy surrounding the 28 pages, including a report Sunday on 60 Minutes, prompted the White House to react.
WASHINGTON — Saudi Arabia has told the Obama administration and members of Congress that it will sell off hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of American assets held by the kingdom if Congress passes a bill that would allow the Saudi government to be held responsible in American courts for any role in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
The Obama administration has lobbied Congress to block the bill’s passage, according to administration officials and congressional aides from both parties, and the Saudi threats have been the subject of intense discussions in recent weeks between lawmakers and officials from the State Department and the Pentagon. The officials have warned senators of diplomatic and economic fallout from the legislation.
Adel al-Jubeir, the Saudi foreign minister, delivered the kingdom’s message personally last month during a trip to Washington, telling lawmakers that Saudi Arabia would be forced to sell up to $750 billion in treasury securities and other assets in the United States before they could be in danger of being frozen by American courts.
The administration, which argues that the legislation would put Americans at legal risk overseas, has been lobbying so intently against the bill that some lawmakers and families of Sept. 11 victims are infuriated. In their view, the Obama administration has consistently sided with the kingdom and has thwarted their efforts to learn what they believe to be the truth about the role some Saudi officials played in the terrorist plot.
“It’s stunning to think that our government would back the Saudis over its own citizens,” said Mindy Kleinberg, whose husband died in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11 and who is part of a group of victims’ family members pushing for the legislation.
Yes, Rosalind Russell was “top drawer.” Much preferred her to Lucille Ball as Mame, even though Lucille was in a league of her own on TV.
My grandparents raised me and everything was from scratch, except for the sugary stuff I begged for at the grocery store.
I also loved the candy called Zotz, which is like a Jolly Rancher filled with Alka-Seltzer powder. Oh, and Pop Rocks were fun.
Pinky Lee ?!? I had a neighbor who played piano for Pinky Lee’s act before she got married. Her name in those days was Pearl Altschuler. She was an angel.
Pinky was the ‘literary ancestor’ of Peewee Herman, but without all the sordid icky stuff.
Holy Shit ! That looks to me like the saudis are admitting their guilt. If the saudis dump $750 B!LL!ON$ in US Treasury debt, Uncle Sam should be able to buy it all back at a beautifully huge discount !
Maybe the saudis will even have to sell newsCrap to Public Radio or Bill Moyers.
Yoohoo it’s me my name is Pinky Lee with my funny hat
He could rub his head and pat his tummy. I spent a lotta time trying to do that
What a great Rosie O’Donnell Interview.. Rosie is a terrific Hillary advocate. Rosie gets today’s world..
SNL’s cold open tonight was great; the Brooklyn debate.
Now I’m off to find out what Xrep was talkin’ ’bout.
Maybe we can get the neocons to settle for an invasion of their beloved saudi Arabia !
We could blow up their oil fields. Think of the money we can make straddling, long on oil and short on the dollar, yen, and whatever the saudis use for money. Just as happened in Iraq Fiasco II, over only 4 years, you’ll be able to turn your $1M!LL!ON into $160M!LL!ON$ in long term capital gains, at the special low tax rate : $107M!LLON$ AFTER tax profit$ !!!
I’m ready to get filthy rich, aren’t you ? Whadda ya say, all you neocons ? Is it a GO ?

and blueid, franklin d he ain’t

Teddy Bears’ Picnic was the theme song for radio show Big John & Sparky
Rocky and Bullwinkle
Soupy Sales
Pinky Lee
The Thin Man series . Topper with Leo G Carrol
Kareem Abdul Jabbar endorsed Mrs. Clinton

I spent a lotta time trying to do that
I still try from time to time
Renewed Feud: Rosie O’Donnell Rips Donald Trump (Again)
