  1. Bill recaps the top stories of the week, including racist rhetoric from President Trump and the second round of Democratic debates.

  2. In his editorial New Rule, Bill argues that Democrats should capitalize on the fact that Americans are sick of hearing about Trump.

  3. 180 degrees from maher’s theory on the winning dem strategy is axelrod’s

    the hill:

Former Obama aide and Democratic strategist David Axelrod is praising Sen. Elizabeth Warren‘s presidential campaign, touting the Massachusetts Democrat as an emerging “Yes We Can” candidate for 2020.

Axelrod, who served as senior adviser to former President Obama in the White House and worked as chief strategist on his 2008 and 2012 campaigns, penned an opinion piece late Friday lauding Warren’s performance in the second round of Democratic debates earlier this week in Detroit.

Warren “is running a strategically brilliant campaign” and “more than any other candidate, she has a clear, unambiguous message that is thoroughly integrated with her biography,” Axelrod wrote in his piece for CNN, where he serves as a senior political commentator.

Axelrod said that “Warren has put critics of her grand plans on the defensive in much the same way Barack Obama put Hillary Clinton on the defensive in 2008, when she argued that Obama’s plans were fantastical in the real world of Washington.”

“A big aspirational message is more satisfying than a cramped, political one. Warren is positioning herself as Big Change versus the status quo. Yes We Can versus No We Can’t,” he added.

  4. Picture the leaves on the variety of trees outside my breakfast room window. They seem to have made a communal decision to skip August by moving straight to September. The leaves on the oaks and maples are starting their autumnal crinkle as I type; boughs of leaves on Kumcho’s favorite oak are changing color, and the squirrels have vanished having completed last week’s mad scavenge. And here am I, alone but for my semicolons.

  5. I read this article in yesterday’s Journal; it left me incensed for the fate of the discarded workers.

Lowe’s told thousands of store workers this week that their jobs were being eliminated as the company outsources tasks such as assembling barbecue grills and janitorial services.

Appeared in the August 1, 2019, print edition as ‘Lowe’s to Outsource, Lay Off Thousands.’

  6. the hill:  Man punched outside Trump rally: ‘If anything, it’ll increase’ my activism

A man who was punched outside President Trump‘s Cincinnati rally this week has said the incident will not deter him from political engagement.

Michael Alter, 61, was protesting outside the rally and said he and the man accused of attacking him were shouting about Trump, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

He told the newspaper he was peacefully protesting and that the altercation would not change his attendance at rallies.

“If anything, it’ll increase it,” Alter said. “You can’t let things like this happen. You can’t have people who are trying to exercise our freedoms and free speech be intimidated by a bunch of fascists and a bunch of thugs.”

The newspaper reported that Alter visited the emergency room on Thursday night and had trouble with vision in his right eye.

His lawyer, Michele Young, told the Enquirer that Alter served three years in active duty and five years in the Army Reserve and called him a “lifelong patriot.”

“We can’t become a country where you’re afraid to speak out, afraid to assemble, afraid to protest,” she said.

Dallas Frazier, 29, is facing a misdemeanor assault charge following the incident, which was captured on video.

  7. Anyone else have trouble getting to sleep if you get waked up at 4:30, or is it just me?

Pogo…  wish I could sleep until 4:30.  The 2 kittens are now sleeping on the bed between us.  They crash when we crash.  But come around 3 am, play mode seems to kick in.  They think nothing of jumping on our heads or playing with our toes.  Good thing they’re cute!

  8. Picture this – senators not running for office on a road trip talking about what Moscow Mitch and the Red Republicans are up to and how they have blocked defense of our democracy

  9. At 4:30 in the morning I’m late for my second bedtime.
Mr Flatus, tell those leaves to green up. It’s still summer until late September. Up here we barely get a month of summer as it is. Now they don’t want me coming down there to straighten them out !  Grumble, grumble, grumble.

  10. That idiot Anti-Trump protester who got punched in the head was literally asking for it and squared-up against the guy who got arrested.  It’s all on video.  Just stay home, morons.

Alternative headline: “Man Starts Fight, Loses, Pretends He Won”.

  11. Ask a Republican, next time you’re talking to one, for their ideas on how to curb or stop gun-violence.  Guess what?  They won’t have any besides “more guns”.  Seriously, try it.

That is to say; “Republicans have no interest in addressing a problem that got at least 18 innocent people violently murdered, today.”

  12. BREAKING: Confirmed active shooter at Walmart near Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso

    News

Police Source: 18 Dead in Walmart shooting

  13. The same day as the Gilroy shooting there was also festival shooting in NYC.  Both of the murders were associated with white supremacist ideas.  There was mention of a book which apparently listed good places to shoot.
    I blame Donald Trump.

  14. THIRD mass shooting this week:  California, Brooklyn now El Paso. I had to text my son asking him if he was OK.  I’d like to live long enough to find out why NO ONE will take on the NRA.  England and OZ have taken control.
Again, the only good thing to be said about totalitarianism, which we’re moving toward*, is that there are NO mass shootings!  Why?  They’re NOT allowed to have armaments… and they probably con’t afford them, what with no food, etc.  I wonder if the NRA lovers are aware of that?  They support Trump at their own gun loving peril.  One day the dictator could use ICE as the SS, paramilitary jack boot group, to clean out their guns.  Well, the guns they have left after Obama came for their guns. Remember?
*Another journalist had his White House credentials revoked.

  15. Beto’s broken up over the shooting. And he recently touted that El Paso was the safest city in the country.  Is there an underground of potential shooters planning these attacks?

  16. Pogo – is the semicolon your friend too?
Flatus – It was only a few years ago that Lowe’s was a worker friendly corporation.  For what ever reason is out there, their customers started migrating to Home Depot and Amazon.  I prefer Lowe’s but it is a fifteeen mile drive to get to the closest one; it is only a five mile drive to Home Depot.
Further investigations need to be accomplished into the NRA Russian love fest.  It maybe they are Russian assets too.

  17. Ha, the El Paso shooter is not a local.  He’s from Dallas, a 10 hour drive away.

  18. Will we be hearing more “thoughts & prayers”?  They keep talking about mental health. Well, I have a friend whom everyone thinks is wonderful. We’ve been friends, more like frenemies, for 18 years. He’s a hoarder, his house is like that TV show, OCD, and ADD. Ya wouldn’t know this if you know him as a co-worker even. When he zeros in on something mentally, he goes on and on. Really fixates. He owns GUNS! He wasn’t screened as being mentally ill., because he appears just fine.  So the mental illness thing is a red herring except for the few who are either out right psychotic and can afford a gun and have the where with all to try to buy one.

  19.

Another young, white, male generating thoughts and prayers because our government won’t call him what he is … A Terrorist.

  20. “Texas Lt. Gov. tells Antifa to ‘stay out’ of El Paso after Walmart shooting”

    Now WHY is this??? Hummm…

  21. and this is where it started.  wonder if the good justices have any remorse for their part in losing chaos upon the land and are aware of the blood on their hands.

     wiki:

District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570 (2008), is a landmark case in which the Supreme Court of the United States held that the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to possess a firearm, unconnected with service in a militia, for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home, and that the District of Columbia’s handgun ban and requirement that lawfully owned rifles and shotguns be kept “unloaded and disassembled or bound by a trigger lock” violated this guarantee. It also stated that the right to bear arms is not unlimited and that guns and gun ownership would continue to be regulated. It was the first Supreme Court case to decide whether the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms for self-defense or if the right was intended for state militias.

The Opinion of the Court, delivered by Justice Scalia, was joined by Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. and by Justices Anthony M. Kennedy, Clarence Thomas and Samuel A. Alito Jr.

  22. Just a thought – in the next real administration will there be enough patriots left to investigate how deep the Russians are into the white nationalist group?

  23. Republican are sending their useless thoughts and prayers. Never saved a single life. Never comforted a single surviving friend or family member. Praise the lord and pass the ammunition. Assholes.

  24. So Mrs. P decides we need t visit LP. In nyc this weekend. So she’s looking for something to do tonight and sees that Barbra Streisand is playing Madison Square Garden for the first time in 13 years. Being that it’s her birthday sort of- 50th according to her (again) I bought tickets. We’re spending the evening with the big dog  and HRC, Jerry Nadler, David Dinkins and a few thousand close friends. Her range ain’t what it is but she’s still got that voice and her mind is in the right place politically. I’ve never been a fan but I do appreciate her talent. It may not be rock and roll but in all a very pleasant evening.

  25. Poobah, he, Moscow (gonna just give the abbreviated first name) and Wayne (asshole) LaPierre never bear responsibility. But thoughts and prayers… fuckers.

  26. Ok one last kudo for Barbra. She ripped trump a new asshole. Even rewrote the lyrics to “Send in the Clowns” to include twit& end with shit.
