A Monumental Idea

New York Times:
Paris has the Eiffel Tower. St. Louis is inseparable from the Gateway Arch. Seattle boasts the Space Needle. Washington has its Monument.
Silicon Valley wants its own universally recognized landmark, something that symbolizes its power and reach. If the San Jose City Council gives final approval to the project this month, an international design competition will be announced this spring. The winning entry could be built on a city park as soon as 2021.
Capturing the tech world in one sculpture or structure or art installation will be a difficult job.

Trail Mixers, any bright ideas out there? here’s mine:

  1. speaking of ape-ly aggressors, a little tidbit from the hill:

Erik Prince, the former head of Blackwater and brother of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, has acknowledged that he was present at a key 2016 Trump Tower meeting.

In an interview on Al Jazeera’s “Head to Head” that aired Friday, Prince said he was present at an Aug. 3, 2016 meeting at Trump Tower to “talk about Iran policy.”

The New York Times reported last year that Prince organized a 2016 meeting at Trump Tower that included Donald Trump Jr. and Lebanese-American businessman George Nader. During that meeting, Nader reportedly said the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia wanted to aid Trump in his bid for the White House.

Prince previously testified under oath to the House Intelligence Committee on Nov. 30, 2017, saying at the time that he had “no official” or “really unofficial role” in the Trump campaign and his only involvement in helping was attending fundraisers and placing yard signs.

“Head to Head” host Mehdi Hasan pressed Prince on why his presence at the meeting was apparently not part of his testimony to lawmakers, to which Prince suggested, “they got the transcript wrong,” prompting laughter from the audience.

Prince later added, “not all of the discussion that day was transcribed.”

A spokesperson for the House Intelligence Committee chair did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment.

Prince’s latest comments come as he and Nader have both been asked to cooperate in the House Judiciary Committee’s expansive probe for possible abuse of power, obstruction of justice and corruption by Trump and his allies.

Prince said last year that he has been cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller’s team, which is investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Mueller’s team has reportedly probed several 2017 meetings that occurred in Seychelles during the period Prince met with a Russian banker there.

Prince has acknowledged that he traveled to the Seychelles and that he met with a Russian government official while there, but has denied that he was acting on behalf of the Trump administration.

  2. speaking of another ape and a selfie with him, this from yesterday’s Miami herald:

Seated at a round table littered with party favors and the paper-cutout footballs that have become tradition at his annual Super Bowl Watch Party, President Donald Trump cheered the New England Patriots and his longtime friend, team owner Robert Kraft, to victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Feb. 3.

Sometime during the party at Trump’s West Palm Beach country club, the president turned in his chair to look over his right shoulder, smiling for a photo with two women at a table behind him.

The woman who snapped the blurry Super Bowl selfie with the president was Li Yang, 45, a self-made entrepreneur from China who started a chain of Asian day spas in South Florida. Over the years, these establishments — many of which operate under the name Tokyo Day Spas — have gained a reputation for offering sexual services.

Nineteen days after Trump and Yang posed together while rooting for the Patriots, authorities would charge Kraft with soliciting prostitution at a spa in Jupiter that Yang had founded more than a decade earlier.

It gets even more interesting, as Ms Li Yang is marketing her self in China as the go to lady if you need to meet Republicans of interest.

update: my favorite comment so far on twitter

“This is just another example of Trump’s efforts to stay on massage. “

  4. We need to quit salivating over the sex stuff and start paying more attention to the  government for sale side of the Trumpsters.

A bias relief of a row of people leaning against a wall staring at their cell phones

  6. ooops I got caught by the speed cops for posting too fast.
lol that what happens when you decide that a little brandy in the Saturday morning coffee is a good idea. So what’s the penalty for PUI?

  7. jack, was that “bias” (as in bas relief) a typo or your opinion of where social media has indeed led us- —half-people stoned? magnificent malaprop for the occasion.

  8. ”We need to quit salivating over the sex stuff”

    There’s nothing sexy about Republicans.

  9. …watched Nancy Pelosi be interviewed by the Economic Club of D.C. last night on C-Span and she is very impressive, with all the charisma and relatability that HRC lacks.    It’s no wonder Republicans are so afraid of her- she’d be a damn good candidate.

That said, when one finds themselves watching C-Span over drinks on a Friday night, it may behoove one to take a step back from politics for a while.

    *backs away, slowly*

  10. wapo’s timely lesson for us today:

Springing forward to daylight saving time is obsolete, confusing and unhealthy, critics say

    […]

The national policy of switching from standard time to daylight saving time and back again is under legislative challenge from coast to coast. Multiple initiatives in Congress and in statehouses would terminate our current system of time toggling — a system that started a century ago and has been controversial ever since.

It’s not really daylight saving time that’s drawing fire: It’s standard time. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) on Wednesday reintroduced a bill to make daylight saving time a year-round reality across the country, with no more biannual time changes. Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.) introduced matching legislation in the House. The moves come in the wake of a vote in the Florida legislature last year to adopt daylight saving time year-round.

If the Sunshine Protection Act became law, it would essentially end daylight saving time by making it the new, permanent, immutable standard time.

    […]

A stylebook note: It’s not “daylight savings time.” That’s imprecise speech. Also, while we’re at it: Daylight saving time does not really save daylight. It should be called daylight shifting time.

“There continues to be the mythic idea that we are saving something by turning our clocks forward and backward,” Downing said. “It’s such a preposterous idea that we can gain or lose an hour by simply sticking our finger in the face of our clocks.”

jace, perhaps to acknowledge the time change tomorrow, sunday serendipity could be 60 versions of The Waltz in D-flat major, Op. 64, No. 1, Valse du petit chien,  composed by Frédéric Chopin

  11. encore, Leroy!   here’s another one of his biggest hits.  also dedicated to fearless leader, the ever loyal KFC fan

  12. I think some anti Trump PAC should rent a bunch of mobile billboards  and then have them drive around the country  listing the lies of the day

  13. How about one of the multicolored spinning circles telling you the computer is looking, thinking, searching….?

Jack, loved the bas relief idea. (And patd’s catch ??)

KC, great idea. I’d chip in for that.

  14. Jack, the easy stealth workaround for the speed cops is to edit your last post. Copy the rejected one and paste it into the last one using the edit function, et voila.

  15. I don’t think she would do it.  But I could get on the Nancy P bandwagon   I love San Francisco values

  16. …sounds like a centrist Democrat, to me.

She very briefly addresses potential candidacy, acknowledges people suggest she run, makes no indication she either considers or rejects the idea.

  17. why go to all the trouble of running, she’s next in line when they haul the trumpugsters to jail or they resign “to spend more time with their family” (some of whom will be in jail) or have absconded off to isles unknown with the wh candelabra and other goodies.

  18. Don’t hold your breath, patd.

If this were a country where the powerful were held accountable for their misdeeds, which it’s not, at the rate the special investigation and the House inquiries are going, her term as POTUS from House Speaker would be a day and a half, max.

  19. For some reason I am listening a lot to Sirius/XM channel Red White and Booze, channel 350.  Honky Tonk country with a bit of pop/rock.

When will Mueller send out his reports?  Maybe he already has done that?  Could it be that SFB is already repressing the report?

  20. Patd,  what Bink said.  Besides, what has anyone other than Nancy done that got the support of 90% of the House?  Hard to match that kind of strength.

Btw, watching a Clapton block on AXS and was reminded of Enoch Powell. Not sure whether SFB or his evil alter ego Steven Miller is the US Enoch Powell.

  21. Anybody watch the Nancy P. interview?  Yeah, i understand it’s 57 mins out of your life…

Sylvan Esso is great- only 4 mins of your life, plus you can do dishes concurrently.
