First, THE NEWS!!!

A new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll shows Vice President Harris leading former President Trump 47% to 44% among likely voters just days before a high-stakes election that appears deadlocked in key battleground states.

When Craig posted the news last night, I was reminded of this political ad encouraging women to vote for Harris. It had such a catchy tune that it floated around in my head all day. So I looked it up and found it on Youtube. Some music just seems to work in a political campaign and some are so forgettable that you can’t remember them as you walk back to your car. American Girl by Laura Bell Bundy seems to be one of those that sticks. Or at least it did with me and I’d never heard it before.

For today I’m creating a playlist of songs to get you ready for the rest of the week that follows. Just to remind you that it is worth the fight. I’m starting it off with American Girl, then The Boss singing Woody’s This land Is your Land and 15 other inspiring songs. Many of them cribbed from my 4th of July play list.

    From the same poll that showed Harris leading in Iowa. 

    A majority of Iowans oppose the state’s new “fetal heartbeat” law, which bans most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, according to a new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll. The poll found that 59% of Iowans — including 69% of women — disapprove of the new restrictions. It found 37% of Iowans favor the new law, and 5% are not sure.

    Harris +9 on looking out for the middle class

    Harris +5 on representing change

    Harris +10 on bringing the country together

    rump is only earning 9% of Black support, lower than the 12% he got in 2020

  14. If what Des Moines poll is capturing in IA is revulsion on the part of senior women, including conservative ones, at an extreme abortion ban we can wonder about TX, which has a similar ban to Iowa’s — which ended up closer than IA in 2020. I think Kamala is about to run away with this race.

  15. The closeness of Michigan bothers me. I all along had Harris winning there.  But really, it’s still Pennsylvania.  Harris has to win there or how can she get to 270?  A time to worry, and I worry a lot.

Something that is interesting to me is none of my cousins, especially those living in the Carolinas, UP Michigan, Iowa, and Ohio have said a thing about the election. 2016 lots of yacking about sfb. 2020 lots of yacking about sfb. 2024 zip, zero, nada. These are the cousins who are the children and grandchildren of my first cousins, several of whom died of COVID. No to masks, no to immunizations.  Other cousins in Maryland and LP Michigan have been quiet, but indications from them are for Harris. 
    My cousins in Europe are full blown Harris fans.

  26. This date was Election Day four years ago. Some of us were standing in snake-around-the-building lines to vote, but blessedly, it was a good weather day.

Starting to see questions to Americans from non-Americans about what will happen if sfb lose to the former republican party.  Just as the destruction wrought by the teabag party to the former republican party led to the magat party, the next iteration is hard to imagine.  Will magats turn moral? They are so far down in the garbage heap you would think there is no lower they can go. The only magat not elected so far is a murderer.  Immoral life is the magat life.
     
    How long will the magat v magat war go on? This is politics so I tend to think it will change when the oligarch billionaires decide they want to destroy America a different way.  It took several years to break the old republican party, and several more years to break the teaparty. 
     
    If the Democrats take the House, Senate and White House with a significant margin could that cause the magat party to break down faster?  I do not think so.  If the Dems hold on to all three through a couple of presidential terms that might be enough.  Look at Colorado.  The republican party has made itself insignificant in ruling the state.  It took about fourteen years, starting in the late nineteen hundreds for the Dems to have a bullet proof legislation and governor.  Each election cycle the magat party could put up good candidates to challenge the Dems, yet they keep finding worse magats to run.  Would the national magat party do the same?  I do not know, I would hope so.

    Friendly neighborhood therapist dropping in to say a few things about this week!

    1. It is an anxious time. Extremely anxious. If you’re feeling anxious, please know that your feelings are totally valid.
    2. There are no “normal” feelings for unprecedented times. Whatever you’re feeling is normal. Try not to judge yourself.
    3. It’s a great week to focus on self-care basics: water (yes, you do have to drink it), two to three meals a day, trying for 7-8 hours of sleep per night even if it’s hard to sleep. The basics matter even more right now.
    4. Stay connected to your community this week. Talk to friends. Text people. Give and receive hugs. We need each other.
    5. Ask yourself the two essential questions: “What can I control? What can I not control?” Do the things you have control over. Practice acceptance with the things you can’t control. (Easier said than done. That’s why it’s a practice.)
    Be gentle with yourself. You got this. We got this. 

    My only additional suggestion is to put fresh sheets on that bed you’re not getting any sleep in.
