Closing Axe
“Notice what was missing tonight — no desperate need for validation, no rage-baiting, no persecution fantasies. Just adults focused on democracy’s future”
“turn the page on the divisive and chaotic trump era… and the book is Mopey Dick”
VP Kamala Harris presented her closing argument in Washington, D.C. at the spot where her opponent launched his 2021 insurrection, the Trump campaign made a huge mistake by insulting all Puerto Ricans, and people have set fire to ballot collection boxes in three states.
Tonight’s monologue is for Republicans. If you have someone in your life who is either planning to vote for Trump or thinking about it, please send this to them. Ask a Republican you love and respect to watch this. The whole thing. As a personal favor to you. We are a week away from the election so make sure to get out and vote on Tuesday, November 5th.
Yep, Jamie. For the record Biden was talking about the comedian, called him “garbage”. In transcript above (right after the deceptively edited clip is cut off) Biden says “his — his — his demonization” — “his” is one person. He was not talking about half the country.
Joe Biden @JoeBiden Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage—which is the only word I can think of to describe it. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation. 9:31 PM · Oct 29, 2024
He must know he’s losing, already in post-election denial mode.
And his field general is ready to go. Fresh out of prison yesterday Steve Bannon on his show said he is telling Trump to declare victory on election night no matter what happens:
“He should stand up and say: ‘Hey, I’ve won this. And we have teams right now that are going to make sure that this thing is not going to be stolen”
I love Joe but what he says or doesn’t say doesn’t matter at this stage. Repubs will grasp at anything, what’s not there for the easy taking, they’ll just make shit up, it’s what they do. Nobody cares.
The names of 2 people stand out as my friends during my 10 weeks of USCG boot camp, in Aug. 1968. Both were Puerto Rican, who joined voluntarily. Carlos Perez, an educated man; and the other was José Armando O’Reilly, Both were great friends and great people. There can’t be too much bad to happen to that moron comedian, one sick fuck.

From the WP article linked by Poobah: Depending upon demand for individual products and the availability of alternatives, the tariff burden may be shared among the foreign producer, the U.S. importer and the final customer. The foreign company that makes the product, for example, might redesign its assembly line to reduce its costs or might agree to trim its profit margin to retain U.S. sales. But the main costs fall on American buyers. Bottom line- he claims to have attended Wharton? I guess he missed the day they discussed tariffs in macroeconomics and microeconomics. And here’s what the intro paragraph to Cato’s treatment of the subject says: More than any other issue, there is agreement among economists that international trade should be free. This view dates back to Adam Smith or earlier and is supported by much reasoning. In general, economists believe that freely functioning markets are the best at allocating resources absent some distortion, externality, or other market failure; competitive markets tend to maximize output by directing resources to their most productive uses. Of course, there are market imperfections, but tariffs—taxes on imports—are almost never the optimal solution to such problems. Tariffs encourage the deflection of trade to inefficient producers and the smuggling of goods to evade those tariffs; such distortions reduce welfare. Furthermore, consumers lose more from tariffs than producers gain, so there is deadweight loss. The redistributions associated with tariffs tend to create vested interests, so harms tend to persist. “House Speaker Mike Johnson took a dig at Obamacare at an event in Pennsylvania on Monday, telling a crowd there would be “massive” health care changes in America if Donald Trump wins the election.”
“We want to take a blowtorch to the regulatory state. These agencies have been weaponized against the people. It’s crushing the free market; it’s like a boot on the neck of job creators and entrepreneurs and risk takers. And so health care is one of the sectors, and we need this across the board,” Johnson said. “And Trump’s going to go big. I mean, he’s only going to have one more term. Can’t run for re-election. And so he’s going to be thinking about legacy, and we’re going to fix these things.”
A “blowtorch” to ACA, leaving folks without any access to healthcare.
Some entity keeps dropping money into the tRUMPsky Media stock black hole. It was down to about $12 a month ago. Hmmm. Orange will cash in at some point, and that would be for a favor to whom?
“Supreme Court reinstates Youngkin’s voter purge order in Virginia”
“Virginia can cancel more than 1,600 voter registrations the state claims are held by noncitizens in advance of next week’s election, the Supreme Court ruled Wednesday.”
“The Justice Department contended the cancellations violated the 90-day “quiet period” mandated under the federal National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), during which states are prevented from enacting systematic voter purges in the lead-up to an election.”
“Virginia in its emergency application argued that the quiet period doesn’t apply to noncitizens.”
But, according to a district judge, they weren’t all non-citizens…but I’m guessing they fit a profile.
“As we know, Susan B Anthony spent her entire life fighting against slavery and for women’s rights. She died, here in her home before the 19th amendment was passed which gave women the right to vote. And that’s why thousands of women, and men, have already chosen this specific location to cast their ballots this year.”
“The line to vote at the Susan B. Anthony House stretched out to the street for much of the day.”
I’ve always voted the day of the election, something about going down and chatting with my neighbors who run the election, finding out what the grandkids are doing and so on. Since I’ve moved to Springfield, for the first time in my life I don’t know any of the election workers so it looked like a good time to become modern and early vote.
If what I saw at the early voting site is any indication of the general election at large this is not going to be your Daddy’s election night. There was a long line of people waiting to vote, it went out the door and around the corner of a fairly large building. at least 200 people with a 30 min to an hour wait. That is not counting people like me that just drove by and said “never mind”. The line was probably 3 to 1 or more women. Interesting
Jack
I haven’t voted yet, I’m not good with long lines. And this was a long line.
Another election anecdote, all of my sisters voted early and posted online about it. Not something they had done before. By posting online it also encourages their friends to vote early too. None of them are part of any movement or organisation that encourages this, they did it on their own. That is how you build grass roots momentum in the social media age. Vote count from Missouri at this time, 4 votes for Harris, 0 for Trump. Under the Trump/Maga rules I declare Harris the winner, the election is over.
Jack
one need not help republicans reframe the discussion around their racist, sexist rally by making it about the President misspeaking for which they frequently lampoon him for doing
A nice middle-aged lady called me 3 days ago recruiting voters. I had voted, so vented my anger at the crooked despicables like Bernie Moreno, Derrick Merrin, and Trump. She said few were answering and thanked me for voting. Last evening at dusk a woman knocked, also campaigning for Democrat votes. She relaxed when I went down the list by memory of whom I had voted for. I live in red country, but my votes for Sherrod Brown and Marcy Kaptur count. I have never, ever voted for a republican. And, I never shall, ever.
What sort of decent person in Wisconsin could vote for California banker (he OWNS! a bank in SoCal) Eric Hovde when Tammy Baldwin is running against him? Hovde’s campaign is targeting Baldwin lately because she has a same-sex partner. I thought most of that draconian bullshit hatred was past us. No it ain’t. See why I hate republicans?
Interesting mail yesterday.
I get the occasional mail for former residents of the house I bought 2 years ago. I’ve come to recognize most of them and if it looks important, I mark it return to sender. If not, I toss it. Yesterday I got 3 pieces of mail from the Voter Participation Center, 2 of them for people whose name I had never seen before. In addition, one of them “Ricky” receive 2 flyers from 2 different state Republican committees. I wondered if the VPC might have been a stealth Republican group. Their address is a PO box in Kansas. But google has them as a left of center organization. So, interesting, VPC is pushing to get women of color and LGBTQ among others to register and vote. The Republican literature contained some very offensive anti trans stuff, really bad imo. Yet all three pieces of mail arrived for Ricky the same day. Looks like they are both using the same subcontractor. So who is wasting their money or are they both burning money by the handful. Because I opened Ricky’s mail from VPC and he has never voted.

in response to Rudy Giuliani’s unhinged rally speech:
…you’ll have to excuse Rudy, he just had to give his apartment to those poll workers and now he’s sleeping at the Carlyle… correction, he’s sleeping in Lyle’s car” -Jon Lovett
~Surprise~ The evening news is leading with Biden’s faux pas. Ditto to what Bink said: No need to fear any potential votes being changed; the racists will vote for Orange Adolf.
Jack – I got one of those today, for some fake person named “Jimmy.” Got one about a month ago, too, but this had a different return address. Ripped it to shreds and threw it in the trash.
Trump has promised to give Kennedy leeway to remake the way the government health apparatus protects Americans. “I’m going to let him go wild on the food. I’m going to let him go wild on the medicines,” Trump said during his closing argument rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.
Musk, the superrich Trump supporter, would be given a much wider portfolio than Kennedy and be charged with a massive downsizing of the federal government. It’s an even stickier situation since Musk’s many companies, including SpaceX and Tesla, have a profit-motivated interest in business with the government. If there’s any doubt that a Musk government role could be a risk for conflict of interest, simply look at the fact that he has said he could be in charge of the “Department of Government Efficiency.” DOGE is the name of Musk’s cryptocurrency, an area the Trump family is also keen to enter.
Musk is also constantly pushing out antisemitic things and has mused about how women shouldn’t vote. Not to mention reports of his meetings with hostile foreign leaders.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, a top Trump ally, said in Pennsylvania on Monday that if Trump wins and Republicans keep the House, there would be a “massive” overhaul of the health care system. “No Obamacare?” shouted an attendee at the campaign event. “No Obamacare,” Johnson said.
Bink. Exactly. They led with the ~comedian~ to give them cover. JK, but NK. There were several MAGAts who said horrible things…and the crowd laughed and applauded.
Joe Biden is getting grief for calling MAGAts “garbage,” which I maintain was just him being polite.
Garbage got its name when a friend used the term to describe the music they were playing, an amalgam of every genre extent when it was formed in the early ’70s. They’ve remained popular whenever they’ve reformed over the years, and have recorded the material for an LP set for release next year. This song was the first single from their most recent album of new material, 2021’s “No Gods No Masters.”
“Companies that rely on foreign suppliers for baby products, auto parts and clothing — to name just a few — say the only way to survive Trump’s promised tariffs on foreign imports will be to offload the cost on consumers, according to the report.
“We’re set to raise prices,” Timothy Boyle, chief executive of Columbia Sportswear, told the Post. “It’s going to be very, very difficult to keep products affordable for Americans.”
“Investors in AutoZone — an auto parts retailer that sources supplies from China , India and Germany — received word this month that consumers will be asked to pay the increase, the Post reported.
“We know what the tariffs will be ,” Philip Daniele, CEO of AutoZone, reportedly said. “We generally raise prices ahead of that.”
So, if tRUMPsky were to win, price increases could start before his term. Chew on that.

Here’s one from a 60/40 Trump county in central Wisconsin.
Perfect split screen for Harris on Pittsburgh front page. Gets her message out as Trump fails to apologize for racist insults.
And unfortunately, Biden’s stutter got him into trouble again.
