Poll Crazy
Maybe I should stop looking at them until they get better. But every morning I check anyway. And lately it has not been good at all.

craig, you must have missed this comment by Jack yesterday which may help calm your worries:
The Big Picture blog addressed the polling question a few weeks ago. Complete with a list of sources.
Polls within the final week of an election tend to be about 60% accurate, e.g.,60% chance of the result falling within the margin of error. More than 10 weeks out, it is a coin toss — about a 50% accuracy rate. Research shows polls 300+ days before an election have no predictive value – they are no better than random guessing.
Yet an analysis of 1,400 polls from 11 election cycles found that the outcome lands within the poll’s result just 60% of the time. And that’s for polls just one week before an election—accuracy drops even more further out.
Ritholtz makes this further observation that we always need to keep in mind as we discuss these issues.
Debates about media bias tend to get framed in a left/right context; it would be accurate and useful to frame media bias in terms of sensationalism and the affinity for a lazy clickbait approach. The media knows how to do horse races, but complex policy analysis and nuance simply fail to generate views. I complain about how poorly the media covers fund managers and stocks; I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that media coverage of an election that won’t happen until 1 year from today is just as terrible.

A) It will never get through to the MAGAt base (there are folks with advanced degrees and a good deal of money who want to remain entrenched in their worldview and lifestyle, and I should be having Thanksgiving dinner with them, but I shall dine alone); it’s the economy, stupid.
2) It will never get through to evangelicals who are being preached to from the pulpit and believe it’s God’s will for their candidate to control things on Earth (there’s a lot of MAGAt overlap there, but it’s not 100 percent); it’s Christo-fascism, stupid.
*) There is sadly, a lot of racism, anti-semitism, and xenophobia in this country (there’s spillover from the above groups, but this includes folks you’d never have suspected a decade ago); it’s the border, stupid.
ps) The world is a dumpster fire and some folks are looking for a strongman to control the things they cannot, even though it means they are being controlled (they identify with the strongman to make themselves feel more powerful, kind of like Stockholm Syndrome for fascists); see Argentina, Italy, and other stupid countries.
What else do you expect from “conservatives.” They don’t care about people; they care about property and money. People are expendable; money is for keeps. They don’t care about “freedom” either; they care about “ownership” and wringing out every penny. That’s it.
RFK Jr. pulls more votes from tRUMPsky, so he may be the third-party spoiler.
Also, there’s always the October surprise.
Still hoping for that lightning strike on the back nine in NJ. Perhaps a coven can be called to bind the MAGAt monster from proceeding with his fascist plans.
That’s all I’ve got at the moment.
I mean, if the Fed would lower interest rates next year, any ongoing price-gouging was offset by price controls on some things, gas prices remain low, and the border issue could be somewhat resolved, it still would help.
Anyone who can vote who doesn’t want to be rounded up and possibly deported under Project 25 should vote Dem, as should their families.
Anyone who cares about women’s right to control their own body/health should vote Dem.
Anyone who thinks something needs to be done about gun control should vote Dem.
Anyone is isn’t a straight, white man should vote Dem, because their rights are on the line.
Basically, vote Dem up and down the ticket in 2024, because you may never have the chance again if you stay home or vote for the fascists. The messaging on this needs to be clear and strong. It’s not fear-mongering if it’s the truth.
The Waltons are on every day at lunchtime. The storyline is now at the beginning of WWII. Some of the dialog about Germany could be inserted into what’s going on in the Republican Party today.
the guardian Putin says Russia ‘ready for talks’ to end the ‘tragedy’ of war in Ukraine but then blames Kyiv for no peace talks Vladimir Putin has said Moscow is “ready for talks” to end the “tragedy” of war in Ukraine but blamed a Kyiv law prohibiting talks. The Russian president launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February last year that has devastated the country and led to hundreds of thousands of casualties, both military and civilian, as well as Russian troops suspected of massacres in places such as Bucha. [continues] Putin says we must think how to stop ‘the tragedy’ of war in Ukraine (msn.com) MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russian President Vladimir Putin told the leaders of the Group of Twenty (G20) on Wednesday that it was necessary to think about how to stop “the tragedy” of the war in Ukraine, some of his most placatory remarks to date about the conflict. Putin’s decision to send troops into Ukraine in February 2022 triggered Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War Two and the gravest confrontation between Russia and the West since the depths of the Cold War. Addressing G20 leaders for the first time since the start of the war, the Kremlin chief said some leaders had said in their speeches that they were shocked by the ongoing “aggression” of Russia in Ukraine. “Yes, of course, military actions are always a tragedy,” Putin told the virtual G20 meeting called by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “And of course, we should think about how to stop this tragedy,” Putin said. “By the way, Russia has never refused peace talks with Ukraine.” The remark, although clearly intended for international consumption, is one of Putin’s most dovish on the war for months and contrasts with his sometimes long diatribes about the failings and arrogance of the United States. Fighting in Ukraine since February 2022 has killed or wounded hundreds of thousands, displaced millions more and devastated swathes of the country’s south and east. Putin used the word “war” to describe the conflict instead of the current Kremlin term of “special military operation”. “I understand that this war, and the… Read more »
The single most successful Biden moment over the past three years hasn’t been any of his actual and very real policy accomplishments. It was the Dark Brandon meme.
We can lament the lack of sophistication among key voters, chastising them for not doing politics right, or we can understand that nihilist conservatives are destroying our institutions precisely to drive down voter participation and engagement.
If it takes Dark Brandon to combat that, sign me up. And over the next year, we’re going to have to find ways to talk to people in a way that calms and reassures them while also driving home the existential threat to our democracy that Trump represents.
None of the above is helped by adding almost 5 billion people to the globe since 1950 which is where most of the MAGAts are still living. Human beings don’t do well when crowded.
ps – Republicans are also lying about it and trying to blame Joe.
“The RSC budget claims that President Joe Biden is proposing to cut Social Security retirement benefits by 23 percent in 2033.”
“ In fact, the Biden administration is proposing no such thing. Benefits would be cut by 23 percent in 2033 if no legislation is enacted before then to shore up Social Security’s finances.”
“Moreover, the president’s budget for FY 2024 makes clear that the administration “opposes any attempt to cut Social Security benefits.”
“ Furthermore, President Biden previously proposed to improve Social Security’s financial state by levying the Social Security payroll tax on earnings above $400,000, and his budget for FY 2024 states, “The Administration looks forward to working with the Congress to responsibly strengthen Social Security by ensuring that high-income individuals pay their fair share.”
Seriously, Dems need to watch “Mean Girls” and “Election” and “My Bodyguard” anything with really malicious teens in it, lying and bullying and manipulating everyone. Those are your Republican opponents.
Learn how important messaging is, especially when humans no longer have the bandwidth to hold more than one thought, nor to hold it for any length of time. That is the voting (or staying at home) public.
Dems need to get waaay better at messaging. There was a local election that had a televised debate (I think it was on local, cable access) and every question, this woman answered with the same, few words: Education. Security. Streets. She sounded idiotic. She won.
We can’t hope that LP ads will save us. We love them, but the brainwashed evangelicals and MAGAts will be unphased. It’s all hands on deck. Don’t get lost in the weeds. Dems can be wonky after they win. Dems should pretend they are talking to high school freshman who are under the spell of a bully. That’s the sweet spot for messaging. Tell them where they are. Tell them they have limited choices and what will happen if they don’t change now. It’s intervention time.

You are like the guy who gets up every morning a frets because his 401K account lost money yesterday. You are getting nowhere and accomplishing little when you do that. Your daily poll is just noise.
These polls can not predict how the election will turn out there are too many variables between now and then.
What the polls do tell us is that Trump will most likely be the Republican candidate and he has a solid 40% with another 5% voting for the “yellow dog”. That makes him a viable threat, not an overwhelming one. Where Trump looks dangerous is when the “gee I’d like someone else” voter is forced to choose. Right now that voter is just irritated, his real choice is a year away.
In a couple of the recent polls tucked away far from most headlines were What I call the White Knight candidate against Trump, the White Knight won handily. even as the poll showed Trump ahead. Then there was the NYT poll last month that had Trump beating Biden and over 50% saying they would never vote for Trump. Crazy.

Way back when, I walked for campaigns and my own campaign. I would occasionally do a block where a solid Dem lived. She supported Dems and voted for Dems, but she had one red in the face issue, make “them” speak English. She was an English only in a state and city where Spanish was the first language for a large percentage of the population. She would rant and rave for many minutes. When walking doors you want to make the contact less than five minutes, she would go on for ten to fifteen. I would walk away just shaking my head.
Glad I am not traveling this week! A terrorist car bomb attack on the Canada-US Rainbow Bridge, Niagara Falls, on the US side at a customs check point. Confirmed two people in the vehicle when it blew up. Several border points between US and Canada are closed. I can’t find much more info than that.
“Trump is essentially an incumbent in this race in the Republican primary. He’s won the nomination the last two times. And you have much more than 50 percent of the voters in a Republican primary in the early states who say they don’t want him—and I think that’s really the story. These national polls are just ridiculous. There’s no reason to pay any attention to them. If he were to lose Iowa, for instance, or lose New Hampshire, those national polls would change in three days.”— Chris Christie, in an interview with The Dispatch.
Tech Talk – The fight/battle/slap fest that has been going on between Google, Microsoft, and others for dominance in the browser wars changed a couple (much longer back) as each worked to come up with a smart address/query line response. This fight has been going on since Gopher was the dominate search engine (program).
What the current versions of MS Edge, Google, Firefox, Duck, Opera, Safari . . ., have is a lot of powerful algorithms to find what you are asking. There are unknown number of servers full of data, and what you ask for needs to be found and splashed on your monitor. It is stunning work of the intertubes.
I have been using all the usual browsers to do my usual insane queries. Sometimes I ask something like “how does a maryland rockfish taste if planked”. The winner of the browsers was MS Edge. The use of the power of modern algorithms works better than other browsers.
The winner has been MS Edge, however, it sometimes provides too much information. Second, I like Firefox. Third is Google on whichever browser it is on.
So, try different browsers and search programs. Each can be best, but so far not one is best of all.
I’m doing my traditional, Thankgiving eve with Sherry. With all the traditional trimmings. Baked salmon, roasted root veggies, brussel sprouts green tomato pickles and unusual for this time of year a home grown tomato. All served with Sherry’s favorite wine. I’ve even poured her a glass too.
Tomorrow I do the family celebration, turkey and massive amounts of carbs with my sisters and their children.
