The Writers Strike Will Soon Be Over | HuffPost Entertainment

Studio Executives Finally Reach Deal With Writers To End Historic Strike

In an email to members late Sunday, the union said it had reached “an agreement in principle on all deal points, subject to drafting final contract language.”

The union said it will share details about what the union negotiators and studio executives agreed to once union leadership reviews the final language in the agreement.

“What we have won in this contract—most particularly, everything we have gained since May 2nd—is due to the willingness of this membership to exercise its power, to demonstrate its solidarity, to walk side-by-side, to endure the pain and uncertainty of the past 146 days. It is the leverage generated by your strike, in concert with the extraordinary support of our union siblings, that finally brought the companies back to the table to make a deal,” the email to members continued. “We can say, with great pride, that this deal is exceptional—with meaningful gains and protections for writers in every sector of the membership.”

Once ratified by the union members, the agreement could have huge effects, setting historic precedents on major industry-wide issues. Throughout the strike, writers have framed the fight as an existential one, showing the ways longstanding inequities in the industry have jeopardized the future of writing as a profession and restricted the types of people who can make a living as a writer in Hollywood. The issues that led them to strike include dwindling pay while corporate executives reap profits from writers’ work and the need for guardrails around the use of artificial intelligence.

  1. Late Night Talk Shows Could Return In Early October, Post-WGA Strike (variety.com)

As the WGA strike draws to a close, first stop on the road to normalcy will be late night — where producers are already plotting a return to air within the next two to three weeks. “We want to come back ASAP,” said one late night insider. Added another: “I think everybody’s leaning forward, like they’re ready to go…. I would look for them to return on October 2 or October 9. I think that they are going to be very motivated to get their crews working again.”
According to insiders, some late night producers are already emailing staff members about coming back to work ASAP — perhaps as soon as Tuesday, depending on what happens next at the WGA.
Because talk shows fall under SAG-AFTRA’s network code deal, which isn’t a part of the talent guild’s current strike, that should allow the hosts (who are all on strike as members of the Writers Guild) to come back immediately, or at least after the WGA membership approves the new deal. Most insiders predict that the major network daily shows will coordinate an exact time to return at the same time — continuing the cooperation between competitors that has even led to the “Strike Force Five” podcast, featuring Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert and John Oliver. The hosts have been in close contact during the strike, and will likely want to maintain that spirit of cooperation.

so begins the real 2024 elections coverage and a likely change in polls

  2. jamie, about time they finally accomplished at least one leg of a decades long off and on dream to link up florida’s major cities by high speed rail.

  3. SAG-AFTRA is still striking, though.  Writers were instructed not to go back to work until the deal is finalized (tomorrow), and to go picket with the actors.

    https://www.vox.com/culture/2023/9/24/23888673/wga-strike-end-sag-aftra

“The union will suspend picketing immediately, but writers will not return to work until the leadership ends the strike. (The union encouraged WGA members to join the SAG-AFTRA picket lines in the meantime.) The leadership is scheduled to vote on Tuesday, September 26.”

“The SAG-AFTRA strike is separate from the WGA strike, and until an agreement is reached between the AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA, the actors remain on strike. Most production, for obvious reasons, can’t resume until that strike ends.”

“…late night talk shows (such as those helmed by Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, and Seth Meyers) are likely to return by early October.”

  4. Don’t think late night shows have been on since Trump’s first arrest. They’ve got a lot of catching up to do, although not looking forward to the inevitable Biden is old jokes. And with actors still striking, I assume they won’t be coming on to plug stuff — so more time for politics!

  5. They can also take ultra-wealthy CEOs to task on the late night shows.  Not everyone has a union to fight for them, so late night talk show hosts are all they have, it seems.

When Republicans respond by telling folks to “get a better job” if they don’t make enough money, well, who is going to do that job and should any person in that position have to scrape to get by if it’s a necessary job?

“Hello NASA folks, space fans, asteroid aficionados. This is Brian May of Queen as you know probably, but also immensely proud to be a team member of OSIRIS-REx,” the 76-year-old musician said in a clip aired on NASA TV Sunday.”

“May played a crucial role in the mission, creating stereoscopic images from the spacecraft’s data that allowed the leader of the mission, Dante Lauretta, and the team to locate a safe site to land and collect a sample.”

  7. “Fascists in the White House”???

Now that’s what the shrinks call projection!

    Donald J. Trump

    @realDonaldTrump

Crooked Joe Biden, who is killing the United Autoworkers with his WEAK stance on China and his ridiculous insistence on All Electric Cars, every one of which will be made in China, saw that I was going to Michigan this week (Wednesday!), so the Fascists in the White House just announced he would go there tomorrow. That was the only way to get him out of the basement and off his lazy a..! He has been a complete disaster for all Autoworkers in the U.S., so much do that with his warped plan & mind, their won’t be any Autoworkers left in 3 years. He is destroying our Country, and likewise, destroying the United Autoworkers. When he slowly walks to pretend he is a “picket,” REMEMBER, HE WANTS TO TAKE YOUR JOBS AWAY AND GIVE THEM TO CHINA AND OTHER FOREIGN COUNTRIES. TURN YOUR BACK ON THIS CORRUPT AND HIGHLY INCOMPETENT PRESIDENT, BY FAR THE WORST IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, AND SHOUT OUT TO YOUR UNION LEADERSHIP TO ENDORSE DONALD J. TRUMP. I WILL KEEP YOUR JOBS AND MAKE YOU RICH!!!

  8. I have been watching the YouTube videos of the new Bright line construction and it looks great.  Too bad about the speed not being Europe or Asian fast, but we get what we can.  I can see flying into Miami, see a few friends, take the train to Orlando, see a few friends, watch the peoples at mouse house and then fly home.

Over the years I have enjoyed many, many videos on YouTube concerning cooking.  Making meals in all sorts of conditions, locales, cultures and by hundreds/thousands of people.  Even eating military field rations from differnet countries (I love France).
One of my favorite genre is Millenials and younger cooking from old cookbooks.  Old is now considered pre-two thousand, yikes.
Something a few try to understand is what life was like before globalization provided citrus year around, or fresh produce year around, and the rest; pre-ninteen seventies.  Also, what foods were like during WWII and post-WWII, rationing, shortages and what we ate was based on our parents and grandparents. I have my grandmother’s cookbooks which includes a few of her mothers which go back to the eighteen hundreds.  Meals for the infirm are a favorite read, but not something I would inflict on my family or myself.
I have noticed a distinct lack of cooking like we did as first or second generation Americans with family immigrating from Europe.  For those I search by country and watch as if I was a local.  Sometimes a translation is needed, often times they are done in English. There are really good African, Mexican, Middle Eastern and Asian first or second generation shows.  I enjoy the videos with a grandchild having their grandparent providing and cooking a meal and translate what they are saying and the portions.
YouTube is one giant rabbit hole!

  9. Orange Adolf is like the teen villain with a fragile-ego in every movie from the 80s.  So far, nobody I’ve spoken with up here supports him.  Their only fear seems to be that he’s the only one who can best Biden.

The border, the border, the border.   (Yeah, food and housing costs are too high.  Price controls should’ve been implemented two years ago when we had the chance.)   The border news is front and center now, as it was during my last, few visits.   Aren’t immigrants just running rampant in Dallas?  No.   They are skeptical of my response, but the suburbs of Dallas do not look like video clips of the border being replayed here.

    1) Get food prices under control.
    2) Stop landlords from price gouging.  Stop warehousing units to drive up prices.
    3) The Fed needs to keep its effing hands off.
    4) It’s the border, stupid. How are the human trafficking cartels better at messaging than our government?    Folks need to come in legally, and if they are caught bypassing, they’re out for five years.

Dems need to work on messaging across the board.  It needs to be consistent and clear, because tRUMPsky and his Rushinz will be louder.

  10. your (3) contradicts your (1) and (2).  Fed’s using the only tool it has to mitigate inflation

The ways to address food and rent costs are targeted assistance to in-need citizens and families, controlling markets is almost impossible

you’re overestimating the power of government to influence entities like landlords and distributors

prices are high because everyone has money and won’t stop spending, like addicts. THE ECONOMY IS WORLD-LEADING GREAT RIGHT NOW

  11. Biden ENDED the war in Afghanistan with minimal American casualties during the withdrawal thanks to the amazing competency of the brave men and women of the US Armed Forces

  12. Biden brought to justice the people who defiled and tried to destroy YOUR Capitol building and tried to overthrow YOUR government

We have a way to reform our government peacefully- it’s called DEMOCRACY and republicans hate it and tried to stop it, and continue to try

  13. Oh wait, Biden revitalized the American TOWN-SQUARE ECONOMY

go to your local formerly vacant Main Street USA, i’ll bet it’s filled with cute little shops and restaurants that are PACKED

    Thanks, Biden! 🫡 🇺🇸

  14. Under Biden, the value of your house DOUBLED in 3 years

You really want your nest-egg to depend on a guy who went bankrupt 7 times??

    Thanks, Biden!

  15. With President Biden, NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW

Not his own son, not a sitting Senator from his own party, and not a tyrannical former president

  16. Biden HOLDS THE LINE of civilization against murderous, nuclear-armed madmen, unlike his predecessor who MADE FRIENDS with them

  17. And don’t forget lowering cost of prescription drugs, allowing Medicare to negotiate prices, capping co-pays — after decades of big companies stopping it

  18. Biden lowered prescription drug costs for fixed-income seniors who PAID THEIR DUES making this nation GREAT , thank you, Seniors🫡 🇺🇸

  19. President Biden has facilitated HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS of dollars in PRIVATE INVESTMENT in US semiconductor production so our country’s manufacturing is no longer subject to the whims of foreign despots

    HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS
    🇺🇸

  20. craig,  guess he was told he better buy a gun now before he officially was convicted in any one of those criminal cases on the docket, hence not allowed as a felon to purchase one.  he’ll squirrel it away under his orange rug  when they come to fetch him.

  21. good points, bink.  seems like a reasonable normal voter would opt for an old, stuttering but comprehensible, seasoned whiz of guy at governing over a similarly old but delusional, crazy conman who speaks gibberish and wants to be a dictator.

so uncle joe will be reelected IMHO — ‘course that’s assuming there are still enough reasonably normal likely voters left in the USA.

  22. patd – It is good that he showed his tiny hands holding a Glock and him stating he did buy it.  Because, it is illegal for a person to purchase or get ownership of a firearm when under indictment.  I am hoping at least one judge, a real judge not a cannon type judge, will send a hot note to sfb and lawyers to arrive Wednesday 0800 to explain why he broke the law and why he should not be sitting in jail to protect himself and others.

The funniest pic of that is him holding the pistol with his thumb in the trigger guard, like he was holding a trophy for the latest phony golf event he won.

  23. Night Rider’s Lament – My favorite Jerry Jeff song (Thanks to Michael Burton for writing it).  It was adopted and adapted to a nautical setting at Hurricane Island Outward Bound School by the founder’s two sons and we used to sing it (if you can call what most of us did singing) on the pulling boats.

I think in any rational world Joe should win going away, and for all the reasons Bink and Poobah noted. But the American people don’t necessarily live in a rational world.  At this point in the 2020 election the national polls had Joe at about a 6 point or so lead against Dumbass in Fall, 2019 and 12 points in early November, 2022 just before the election. His lead in NH polls was about 9 on average this far out – it’s 12 now.  Hard to make much of that. Plus, there’s the goddamn no labels bullshit and Cornell West – each of whom if they get on the ballot in mare than a couple of state, could affect the vote because whoever pulls a lever for either of them isn’t going into the voting booth to vote for Trump.  I am getting this anxious feeling that we could be seeing another third party swing what should have been a Democratic victory to the republican idiots. Remember Jill Stein?

  24. https://www.cnn.com/2023/09/25/politics/fact-check-trump-treason-nbc-senate-democrats/index.html

“Former President Donald Trump made a series of inflammatory social media posts on Sunday in which, among other things, he lied that Senate Democrats rigged the 2020 election and baselessly accused the company that owns NBC and MSNBC of treason.”

“Later in the post, after making baseless allegations about Biden, Trump returned to the topic of Senate Democrats: “I wonder how much they got paid for Rigging the Election? Menendez is one of many, a small timer at that. EVERY DEMOCRAT SHOULD RESIGN FROM THE SENATE!”

The loon, the loon. Did he just violate his gag order? Is NBC going to sue him? He seems more unhinged by the day. Nothing left lose.

  25. Just saw David McCullum has died.  Ducky is gone.  And, as someone who watched the Man from U.N.C.L.E. way back when, the guy the women (girls) swooned over.  Time is forever, we less so. He was ninety.
