Putin plants a grim harvest in Ukraine | The Seattle Times

Escalating his level of viciousness, Russian President Vladimir Putin has pulled out of a deal that has allowed Ukrainian grain exports to reach hungry people in Africa and followed up that decision with missile attacks on Ukrainian ports and crop storage facilities.
Putin has pledged to poor African nations that no one will go hungry because their crucial grain supplies will be replenished with free grain from Russia — a promise that may be as worthless as a nearly-worthless ruble.
As Putin aims his missiles at the Ukrainian harvest, his troops are reaping the benefit of the deadly crop they have planted on the battlefield. Ukraine’s much anticipated offensive against the entrenched Russian army is reportedly being significantly hampered by the countless land mines that the invaders have buried all over the lands where the fight is raging.
Once again, Putin has given stark evidence of his unrestrained ruthlessness. Can there be a more dangerous person on the planet or a more urgent cause for the international community to pursue than his defeat?

  3. applicable to some out there with an innate destructive nature, those cartoons bring to mind irving berlin’s song lyrics from ‘annie get your gun”

Folks are dumb where I come from, they ain’t had any learnin’
Still they’re happy as can be,a doin’ what comes naturally
    Doin’ what comes naturally
Folks like us could never fuss with schools and books and learnin’

  5. Despite the pearl clutching by some groups about using the cluster munitions in Ukraine to allow the Ukraine military to fight back against the russian invasion and terrorism, Ukraine military is using the munitions to good advantage.  The Ukraine military is now advancing in former stalemate areas, and it is because the cluster munitions are very useful for clearing mines, making paths for the retaking of Ukraine country.

  6. The Putin puppets get my goat.  Can’t imagine what they would think if either Canada or Mexico were invading the country, bombing American cities and trying to overthrow the US government.

  7. jamie, depends on how much dark money funneled to PACs they are getting or expect to get.

  8. ABC News: Lawyers for Trump have arrived at Jack Smith’s offices for a meeting as potential Jan. 6 indictment looms.

NBC News: The Trump legal and political teams are preparing for the possibility that the federal grand jury will vote on charges against Trump as early as TODAY

  9. Need to dig out and chill a bottle of bubbly – again.  This is so horrible wild.  I never thought I would ever see a president worse than Nixon, but Nixon did like the U.S.

  10. Yesterday I was listening to NPR and they were talking about the urban heat island effect as if it was a new and scary thing. Anybody who has ever lived in a city understands this. Where have these folks been hiding?

  11. Bringing all the medical knowledge I acquired as general counsel of our local hospital 20 years ago to bear (which would be as close to none as one can get) I’m diagnosing Mertle as having experienced a TIA yesterday…

    … or something else.

  12. Pogo
It sounds like something my uncle had happen to him. His wife took him to the hospital, scanned him all over , the diagnosis was “damifino syndrome” It never happened again and he lived another 20 years.

Conservative cries bitter tears after Trump allies admit election lies: ‘It was all BS’ (msn.com)

Conservative broadcaster Steve Deace complained bitterly that Donald Trump’s allies admitted to lies about the election that he helped spread.
The BlazeTV host initially opposed Trump in 2016 and then claimed to leave the Republican Party after his first choice, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), called for unity behind the reality TV star-turned GOP standard bearer, but by 2020 he was promoting Trump’s election lies and raising money for the “Stop the Steal” movement — much to his belated chagrin.
“We are going to the mattresses for these people, we are offering them more accommodations, more chances, than we’d offer our own family members, for goodness sake,” Deace said, “and for what? For Rudy Giuliani to go down to Georgia and admit that he lied? Have Jason Miller tell the Jan. 6 commission, ‘Yeah, we all knew it was BS?’ What is this?
“Some of you don’t like it when I use the cult word. When you like being treated like a schmuck, and ask for more, that is a cult. ‘I’m the mark, I’m the sucker, I want to be such and I resent the person who tries to get me out of that.’ Those are marks of groupthink, frankly.”
“How many people in this audience sent money to ‘Stop the Steal’ three years ago?” Deace continued. “How many shows did I waste your time talking about this three years ago? How many? I still have not recovered. Between election fraud and COVID, I probably have the lowest Facebook following of any major show in this industry. I will routinely post things on Facebook and get, like, two or three comments. It’s, like, Facebook is like, ‘We won’t ban you because you’ll whine about it and generate a bunch of publicity, so we’ll just make it so no one sees your material at all.”
“Why?” he added. “Because I went to the mattresses on COVID and the election fraud issue, only to have Rudy Giuliani say, ‘Yeah, I was lying,’ and Jason Miller say, ‘Oh, we knew it was all BS.'”

  14. DC district court clerk said not inditments today.  eh

I was in the Air Force during the investigations and trials and decisions by a back then Supreme Court.  1974 things were typical in the military with a lot of rumours going around about what was going to happen to us.  I was also frozen for duty in hostile locations (the whole prepare to ship out with 48 hour notice, do your will etc).  And, we had a government which was, to us, shaky.  We did not know what was going to happen, so we stop auto payments of our monthly pay and collect it in cash.  That is GI thinking.

While all this was going on, the Vietnam peace treaty stuff was going on; 1973 get the U.S. ground troops out.  Air Force is still operating in Vietnam, and from bases all over Southeast Asia.  It was complicated time.

  15. https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/27/politics/supreme-court-mountain-valley-pipeline/index.html

“The Supreme Court on Thursday cleared the way for construction of the controversial Mountain Valley Pipeline to proceed, granting an emergency request from backers of the project that has the support of Congress and the Biden administration.”

“The justices agreed to lift lower court orders that froze construction of the project while legal challenges play out.”

“The Supreme Court’s order is a victory for West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, a conservative Democrat who has championed the project and pushed for it during debt ceiling negotiations in June.”

“The order came as the White House announced new actions to combat climate-fueled extreme heat, which has been baking cities in the Southwest for weeks before moving Northeast on Thursday.”

“Despite climate activists urging the Biden administration to stop approving fossil fuel projects like the Mountain Valley Pipeline, White House officials have been supportive of the pipeline since it was first introduced in Congress last year. More recently, administration officials including White House senior adviser John Podesta and Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm voiced support this year for the pipeline’s approval.”

“The 300-mile-long pipeline would transport gas from West Virginia’s Marcellus and Utica shale areas to Virginia. The pipeline would cross waterways and federal national forest lands, which is why it went through a complex environmental permitting process and led to multiple lawsuits.”

“…members of Congress came together under debt ceiling negotiations to pass the Fiscal Responsibility Act, known as Section 324, mandating the completion of the pipeline and stripping jurisdiction of courts to hear challenges regarding federal approvals of the project.”

“When it was revealed that Manchin’s pipeline provisions would be added to the debt limit bill, a White House official previously told CNN it would make good on a compromise that the White House and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer struck with Manchin last year to secure his vote for the Inflation Reduction Act.”

    FU Joe Manchin-

“…environmental concern for the pipeline which, they argue, forced “hundreds” of private landowners to go to court for eminent domain proceedings. They said the pipeline crosses terrain that is both “demanding and fragile” and at times climbs up more than 200-miles-steep “landslide prone” mountains.”

“The Mountain Valley Pipeline is a climate disaster that defies logic and will only exacerbate the crisis for communities along the pipeline,” said Ben Jealous, executive director of Sierra Club. “These communities – like all of us – deserve to have safe drinking water, breathe clean air, and be safe from potential methane leaks and disasters.”

“Jamie Williams, president of The Wilderness Society, called the pipeline “a threat to our water, our air, and our climate.”

    Again, FU Joe Manchin-

“Former intelligence whistleblower David Grusch suggested that U.S. aerospace corporations were siphoning off government funds.”

“Referring to Grusch’s claims that there had been misappropriation of Pentagon funds, Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) asked if that meant “there is money in the budget that is set to go to a program but it doesn’t and it goes to something else?”

“Yes. I have specific knowledge of that. Yep,” Grusch said.

“Do you think U.S. corporations are overly overcharging for certain tech they’re selling to the U.S. government and that additional money is going to programs?” Moskowitz pressed.

    “Correct,” Grusch said.

While Earth burns, Dems & Repugz join to hold hearings about UFOs (UAPs). Non-human biologics? Monkey or dog remains?

  17. So 1/6 indictment watch is on.  Pick a date/time.  Winner gets satisfaction of knowing SFB got served when you said he would.

I’m guessing tomorrow (7/28) at 1:30 p.m.  I hope Smith makes it a speaking indictment so whatever judge is assigned the case can’t seal it from inquiring minds.

Bonus points for guessing any co-conspirators who also get hit. Mike Lindell is my first guess.

  18. Joe Manchin- raping the earth for political clout, with Biden admin support, nice job guys, really enjoying the hellscape you’re enabling 🥵

  19. if you’re environmentally-conscious, you might wanna find a new concern, because Gen Z doesn’t care, they love to buy things and then throw them away, none of them can cook so it’s take-out packed in plastic, delivered by speeding car

  20. BREAKING on @MSNBC:

A third defendant has been added to the Trump classified documents case. Carlos De Oliveira has been added to the docket charging Trump and Walt Nauta.

NYT identified Carlos Deoliveira as the worker who drained the pool at Mar-a-Lago in October and, in the process, flooded the room where surveillance footage is kept.

  21. BREAKING: Donald Trump charged with 3 more counts in classified documents case, including willful retention of national defense information and corruptly destroying or concealing records

  22. Also breaking – WaPo –

New charges filed against Trump in documents case

Unsealed indictment alleges the former president asked to have security footage deleted to keep it from investigators

OK, Poobah, you beat me by 4 minutes on this one, and it sounds like Bink may have gotten wind of this 20 minutes before you reported it.

  23. Bink, Manchin is nothing if not into self interest. He and Mountain Valley Pipeline guys don’t give 2 shits about fucking up the “wilderness” areas in WV. We don’t have anything like wilderness around here, but MVP runs down the western border of Harrison County (where East Bumfuck is) and is maybe 5 miles west of the Greater East Bumfuck “metro” area, and the Equitrans Pipeline which hooks up to it splits the county roughly in half from NNE to SSW and is about 1-2 miles west of our house.  You can’t swing a dead cat and not hit something that’s part of a gas pipeline around here.

  24. My brother’s beautiful property has a gas pipeline running through it. They fly a drone over to check on it, somehow.  As I looked down the road, I could see the markers for all of the pipeline on his neighbors’ property.

  25. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jul/27/project-2025-dismantle-us-climate-policy-next-republican-president

“Called the Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise, it is meant to guide the first 180 days of presidency for an incoming Republican president.”

“The nearly 1,000-page transition guide was written by more than 350 rightwingers and is full of sweeping recommendations to deconstruct all sectors of the federal government…”

This is ‘Their Kampf’ and it’s scary af.
