Mitch Ditched

The Guardian:

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell was taken to hospital in Washington DC after he tripped and fell at a hotel, a spokesperson for the senator said.

“This evening, Leader McConnell tripped at a local hotel during a private dinner. He has been admitted to the hospital where he is receiving treatment,” David Popp, communications director for McConnell said in a statement.

In 2019, McConnell, who is 81 and a survivor of childhood polio, tripped and fell at his home in Kentucky, suffering a shoulder fracture.

The Senate has been without several members recently due to illness.

The office of Senator Dianne Feinstein, 90, said she was taken to hospital last week to be treated for shingles.

Senator John Fetterman, 53, who suffered a stroke during his campaign last year, was expected to remain out for some weeks as he received care for clinical depression.

The Democratic absences have proven a challenge for Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer, who is already navigating a very narrow 51-49 majority.

The Republicans, as the minority party, have had an easier time with intermittent absences. It is unclear if McConnell will be out on Thursday and if that would have an effect on scheduled votes. South Dakota Senator John Thune is the Senate’s No 2 Republican.

  1. imagine his security service cadre transmission:

“the turtle is on his back. i repeat the turtle is on his back.”

  2. all kidding aside, good wishes for his recovery as well as the other senators in hospital.  it is imperative the Senate be functioning at its best at this critical time when the House has run amok.

  3. at 6 minutes in colbert muses “oh, tuck, you just got mitch slapped”

The Dominion lawsuit against Fox News has revealed that Tucker Carlson publicly supported the former president while privately despising him. Elsewhere, Oklahomans rejected an effort to legalize recreational use of marijuana.

  4. Jeez, for a second there i thought the headline read “mitch dickhead”

Also, i have zero best wishes for that supreme-court-seat-stealing son of a bitch.

  5. also this morning in the guardian

Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, has posted to his official Telegram about the night’s events, writing:

It’s been a difficult night. A massive rocket attack across the country. Kyiv, Kirovohrad, Dnipro, Odesa, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia regions. Attacks on critical infrastructure and residential buildings. Unfortunately, there are injured and dead. My condolences to the families.

All services are working. The energy system is being restored. Restrictions were imposed in all regions.

The enemy fired 81 missiles in an attempt to intimidate Ukrainians again, returning to their miserable tactics. The occupiers can only terrorise civilians. That’s all they can do. But it won’t help them. They won’t avoid responsibility for everything they have done.

We thank the guardians of our skies and everyone who helps to overcome the consequences of the occupiers’ sneaking attacks.

  6. My dog woke me up around twoish this morning.  I heard “breaking news: Senator . . .”  I waited for the one line that would make me happy about being awake, sadly it did not come.  The man most at fault for the current destruction of America has not yet produced his dramatic exit.

  7. Trlp and fall. I’m trying to imagine a turtle doing that… nope. Take your time recovering, Mitch. The Senate will get along fine without you.

  8. pogo, BiD and sturge

don’t forget mitch might be the only one left that can wrangle the GOPers in to voting to raise the debt ceiling.  that’s a must do this week or shortly thereafter.  otherwise kiss the economy (whatever is left of it) goodbye.

  9. This is not his first trip and fall that is publicly known.  My guess is he is well accomplished in this method of testing gravity. It gets dicey very fast on stairs. He already has the best alternative to assisted living so why quit and give it up? I am sure the guy will be around until the pulse is flat.

  10. patD – I believe that should be BB you referenced, as I have not yet commented.  So here it is:

Hate the sin/Senator, but love the sinner/human being.  Hope he recovers.  Age and infirmity will come to us all if we are around long enough.  Maybe he will have time to think about what he’s done to hurt America and her people during his forced time out.

    Semi-separate issue:
What was the private function at the hotel, and how much did he get paid for being there?  Do any of the critters realize they won’t need money when they’re dead?

  11. BiD & BB,

sorry for the mix-uo. must have Bs in my bonnet today.

as to the “private function” i would guess it’s to rake in more money for mitch’s slush fund (AKA senate leadership fund) that he uses to keep the troops loyal and himself in power.

  12. last night PBS newshour had a segment on the DC criminal code dust up that critterville  & the prez is against the local revision of.   this  caught my eye about maybe using the current section (now that its not being revised) against the instigator of the jan6 riot:

a paragraph in D.C. code that is very broad, saying essentially that people associated even indirectly with a crime, like murder, should be charged as if they pulled the trigger.

  13. Ivy – I have a Turtle Crossing sign on my fence.  It is for good turtles wandering around our peninsula.  The little ones need to be cared for.  Big one, not so much.

  14. Patd & BB, yeah, that type statute common, it’s commonly called a P2 statute. If it’s as broadly worded as what I’m reading here it would never pass constitutional master. It’s not specific enough to give either law-enforcement or a would-be perpetrator notice of what would constitute participation in a crime. of course it raises the question of what the standard would be for a DC criminal statute. I don’t know whether DC has a “constitution “or whether the US Constitution would be the standard.

  15. even though it is vague and too broad, it has been used in DC and folks have been imprisoned.  if for no other reason, why not make noise with it to emphasize the rump’s involvement and connection to crimes committed in DC on jan6.

  16. Life in the VA.  Every now and then someone looks at your shot record, pretty much the same thing we had on active duty.  The nurse had to ask for help because something was not working on the computer screen the way she thought it should. Yup, one of my “optional” shots was a few years out of date and confusing the data.  So, I walked out of the injection office with a tetanus, pneumonia, and, my first shingles load.  Yeah, do I feel good now.

Another thought about the Senate minority leader.  He must have really rung his bell.  My ninety-four year old mother fell and knocked herself out and the medical staff told us she looked okay and to keep her from doing it again.  Not even a night in the hospital.  Even cautious would be an overnight.  There is more to the story and it is being kept close to the vest.  Another gqp story to be told in a book later this year.

  17. Blue Bronc: love your turtle crossing sign. You must have some big snappers around there I would guess.
I will stoop to wishing The Minority Turtle a recovery as speedy as an Alabama red-eared slider. They do move fast.

  18. Of course Mitch is being kept in the hospital and getting great care…at the taxpayers’ expense.

I would like to see Mitch presented with a bill as he leaves the hospital.  I’m almost sure he’s clueless about the cost of care. Even if he isn’t responsible for paying the bill, I would like for him to be confronted with the numbers.  Then, I would like for him to understand how much that is for someone making much less than he, and how important it is to reign in the medical industry and the health insurance industry, both which are centered on profits rather than care.

  19. Ivy – surprising we do not have snappers roaming around.  We have various Mid-Atlantic turtles, box and flat.  That is why I try to make sure my neighbors know about our little friends before they go out mowing the lawns.
