Georgia secretary of state Brad Raffensperger, who memorably denied Trump’s request that he “find” votes in 2020, appeared poised to secure the party’s nomination for re-election against the Trump-backed congressman Jody Hice.

  1. The former president and VP are engaged in a high-profile battle over the Georgia gubernatorial race in what many see as a prelude to the 2024 presidential primary, and the world’s richest man took to Twitter to make light of allegations that he acted inappropriately towards a woman on his private plane.

  2. in case you didn’t watch the above, it started out this way according to huffpo

Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show” audience cheered as he took the stage Monday afternoon. But instead of his normal comedy bits, he delivered the news about the mass shooting in Texas that left at least 19 children and two adults dead.
Colbert needed to take a few moments to gather himself, going silent for 6 seconds, before continuing with his monologue.
“There is nothing that can ever be said that can approach the immeasurable grief of those families,” Colbert said.
He offered up prayers for the victims and their families, and prayers for government leaders to show courage and work to prevent more shootings. Then he added:
“But prayers won’t end this. Voting might, so when you vote, ask yourself this question: ‘Who, running for office, has publicly stated that they’re willing to do anything and everything in their power to protect your children from the criminally insane number of guns in America?’”

“The National Rifle Association will host its annual meeting as planned this weekend in downtown Houston…”
“The convention center Exhibit Hall buzzed with activity Tuesday as staffers arranged guns and gear from across the rifle industry over roughly 14 acres. Ticket booths beckoned visitors, as did the gun rights advocacy group’s website.”
“Make plans now to join fellow Second Amendment patriots for a freedom-filled weekend for the entire family as we celebrate Freedom, Firearms, and the Second Amendment!” that website read.”
~Guns. Fun for the whole family.~

In Houston at the NRA shindig this weekend: Orange Adolf, Greg Abbott, Ted Cruz…so they will continue to call themselves pro-life, while actually being just the opposite.

  4. https://www.cnn.com/2022/05/25/politics/gun-laws-us-congress/index.html

“Republicans will argue that background checks chip away at gun rights and, ultimately, will take away guns. “You see Democrats and a lot of folks in the media whose immediate solution is to try to restrict the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens,” Sen. Ted Cruz, a Texas Republican, told reporters Tuesday.”

“Notably, after Sinema tweeted that she was “horrified and heartbroken” by Tuesday’s shooting, Rep. Ruben Gallego, a likely primary challenger in 2024, criticized her for supporting the filibuster. “Please just stop.. unless you are willing to break the filibuster to actually pass sensible gun control measures you might as well just say ‘thoughts and prayers,'” he tweeted.”

“GOP Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina warned Democrats against having a “reflexive reaction,” saying he is confident in the coming days it will be learned that there were “signs” the 18-year-old shooter was “at risk.” Yeah, but if he didn’t have access to guns…

Ted Cruz, who is to speak at NRA forum on Friday, slammed for offering hollow prayers after Uvalde massacre | MEAWW

Texas Senator Ted Cruz is facing backlash over his response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde on Tuesday, May 24. Democrats and gun control groups among others slammed Cruz after he called for more armed law enforcement on school campuses following Tuesday’s shooting to prevent such incidents instead of gun control reforms, while offering prayers for the victims and their families.
    […]
After the massacre, Cruz tweeted about the incident and offered prayers for the victims and their families. He wrote, “Heidi & I are fervently lifting up in prayer the children and families in the horrific shooting in Uvalde. We are in close contact with local officials, but the precise details are still unfolding. Thank you to heroic law enforcement & first responders for acting so swiftly.”
“When there’s a murderer of this kind, you see politicians try to politicize it, you see Democrats and a lot of folks in the media whose immediate solution is to try to restrict the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens,” Cruz said, per Jessica Dean, CNN correspondent.
“We are seeing way too many of these horrific mass murders. And we need to devote far more law enforcement resources to stopping violent criminals and preventing these kinds of absolute acts of evil,” added Cruz, who’s scheduled to speak at the National Rifle Association’s annual meeting later this week.
Cruz’s tweet triggered an intense backlash and debate on Twitter on gun reforms. Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrote, “Aren’t you slated to headline a speaking gig for the NRA in three days – in Houston, no less? You can do more than pray. Faith without works is dead.”
Ruben Gallego (D-Az) wrote, “Fuck you @tedcruz you care about a fetus but you will let our children get slaughtered. Just get your ass to Cancun. You are useless.” She further tweeted, “Just to be clear fuck you @tedcruz you fucking baby killer.”
Gun control advocacy group Moms Demand Action’s founder Shannon Watts responded to Cruz’s tweet and wrote, “Fervently lifting Uvalde up in prayer while refusing to do a goddamned thing to stop gun violence is why this keeps happening, especially in Texas. In fact @SenTedCruz has been spreading gun lobby lies about the ATF director nominee while trying to stop a federal ghost guns ban.”
[continues interspersed with other responding tweets]

  6. “…cannot be tolerated…” says Texas human-cesspool Abbot, after its having been tolerated since Charles fricken Whitman, and all indications being that it will continue to be tolerated much further into the future.

    Gop are American Soviet nazis.

  7. I get the impression Georgia doesn’t give a damn what TFG wants or says.  Biggest upcoming issue to my way of thinking is whether Kemp and Raffensberger did enough damage to voting in GA that Kemp will beat Stacey this time around.

  8. It should never have been called “gun control”, just stirred up right wingers. Call it gun safety, even most NRA members support that.

  9. “I don’t hold a hose, mate” was the response from now-former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison when asked by a journalist why he was holidaying in Hawaii while Australia literally burned in 2019.
The people of Australia had their chance to respond last weekend and not only does Morrison not hold a hose, he will no longer hold the prime minister’s office.
Along with victories for pro-climate parties in Germany and Slovenia, it’s a sign that voters across the globe may not be satisfied with politicians who ignore this growing threat to our economy and environment.

He told the wing nuts to use , ” climate change ” instead of  ” global warming ” , because  it tested better for them .
Then a few years later they squawked that the greenies were trying too fool people with the change in terms.

  11. Doesn’t matter what we call it…  gun safety… children safety…
the so called “pro life” party is going to keep voting for guns and more guns…

  12. Once again, if Dems appealed to rural white voters in any way, they could break republicans’ stranglehold on American politics

Don’t blame me, i didn’t frame the Constitution to give less populous rural states disproportionate representation.

  14. https://www.texastribune.org/2022/05/25/uvalde-shooter-bought-gun-legally/

“The gunman in the deadliest school shooting in Texas history bought two AR-style rifles legally just after his 18th birthday — days before his assault on Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.”

“In Texas, you must be at least 18 years old to buy a rifle, and the state does not require a license to openly carry one in public.”

“Authorities counted at least seven of what appeared to be 30-round magazines, but it won’t be known whether they were emptied or still contained bullets until the crime scene is processed.”

  15. https://www.cnn.com/2021/11/26/world/us-gun-culture-world-comparison-intl-cmd/index.html

“The United States is the only nation in the world where civilian guns outnumber people.”

“…the US is one of only three countries in the world where bearing (or keeping) arms is a constitutional right, according to Zachary Elkins, associate professor of government at the University of Texas at Austin and director of the Comparative Constitutions Project. Yet the ownership rate in the other two — Guatemala and Mexico — is almost a tenth of the United States.
The gun debate in those countries is less politicized, Elkins said. In contrast to the US, Guatemala and Mexico’s constitutions facilitate regulation, with lawmakers more comfortable restricting guns, especially given concerns around organized crime, he said. In Mexico, there’s only one gun store in the entire country — and it’s controlled by the army.”

“I used to hate my curls. I spend mornings and nights embarrassed of them trying desperately to straighten this part of who I am. But the daily damage of trying to fix myself became too much to do,” he said in his speech. “So while having curly hair in Florida is difficult, due to the humidity, I decided to be proud of who I was and started coming to school as my authentic self.”

“Now I’m happy. Now I’m happy, and that is what is at stake. There are going to be so many kids with curly hair, who need a community like Pine View and they won’t have one,” Moricz said. “Instead, they’ll try to fix themselves so that they can exist in Florida’s humid climate.”

A brilliant way to make his point and not be silenced.

  17. Tom Tillis says we will find out the shooter had issues.   But Tillis has blocked all legislation that would let gun regulators find out about the issues

  18. That assault weapons ban  begs for  a long term graph of the deaths  starting before it was passed, right up to today.
I’ll wager it’ll  look like the ” Keeling Curve ” measuring Co2 at Mona Loa.

  19. …looking at new trucks since mine died, fun fact: new truck models have an option for a factory-installed driver-accessible handgun-safe 🧠 🇺🇸

Yeah they’re insanely expensive, fully loaded $100k lol

    Definitely looking at EVs though👍

  23. Oh wow that was Beto interrupting Abbott briefing. O’Rourke challenged Abbott on gun control, shouting, “You’re offering us nothing.”

  24. Right….gop are Soviets and they cain’t hardly wait for everybody else to be Ukraine. Sick humans.

  25. You can’t buy a six pack  if you’re 18  in Texas , but you can buy all the assault rifles, and ammo  you want.

  29. Yeah there’s some Anne Richards stuff going on right there.  If I was a Beto opponent I would be slinking toward the nearest exit right about now……

  30. Wow, Old Beto was right up there in his face…….fuckin’ cool…….

And I didn’t see them doing any “dragging” …….they escorted him but didn’t drag…..the part I saw…..the security seemed to know who they were dealing with.

    (i.e. Their next governor.)

  31. Well that was a quick pivot to mental illness right at 24 hours.  Good on Beto – call the idiot out on his contribution to the problem.

Poobah, I’d like to think that Cornyn could only take so much bullshit, but it’s Cornyn – I’m guessing he needed to pee.

  32. i wonder how much profit the gun dealer made from the sale of the gun that killed all those kids- a couple hundred bucks, maybe?

    Nice job, fucker

  33. The price of diesel in  Ga. –
So I was in my Swift  18 wheeler  sitting on I-75 , about 30 miles North bound outa Valdosta, where the great onions grow.  And we were all backed up to Atlanta.
    With a filling bladder.

Then over the radio  comes  this 4 wheeler’s voice  lecturing everyone who had their ears on about how this wouldn’t happen if there were no big trucks.

Needless to say I bite down hard on this.  Telling him his entire world comes in an 18 wheeler.
Then, not long after that I stopped in Vinegaroon, Texas to see Judge Roy Bean’s courthouse.
It was just me , and the ole lady running the place.  A state employee.
I wondered around used the “John” ,
As I was leaving , we talked a bit,  she asked me what I did . Knowing full well  that was my big white truck in her lot . The only thing in her lot.
I said i drive that truck.

Then she said, ” Oh you kill people with it. ”

Then I leaned into her face  and said, “No lady , I haul the toilet paper that keeps your old wrinkled  ass clean.”
All of this crystalized  this idea for me, ” Your whole comes in a big truck.”

Which brings me to the price of diesel in Ga.
Everything we touch rests on that.
Our entire food supply , the ships that move it , the trains , barges, the tractors, combines, the trucks that shuffle it all.
The price of diesel  is nearing six bucks.
This is going to pop , or only Elon Musk will be eating $39 baloney sandwhitchs

  34. Bob, unless it just moves locally in something smaller than a 350 size truck, it moves on diesel (albeit a very high grade of it if it is Jet A). Truck, train, plane – it’s all diesel.  Mrs. P gets annoyed at trucks – she’s not very hip to the power/weight thing and thinks they can go faster uphill than a loaded truck can, but I digress.  My only real beef with trucks is when one gets beside another one that it can’t really get past and slows my impatient ass up.  Sorta near us is I-81 through VA, MD & PA – which is notorious for that phenomenon. I’m not crazy about coal and log trucks in WV either, but I put that on the DOH for not building passing lanes into the roads in the mountains. The truck drivers have nothing to do with that.

  35. Ha…..played a few months at the Howard Johnson’s Valdosta on I-75……’82

  36. And here’s the kicker  about diesel.
Oil is not one thing , it’s like people.  The best oil in the world for making gasoline is from th Niger Delta. When we crack that it yields more than any other per barrel.
Cracking  for diesel  may tie into  the Russians. , just a guess.
No matter what , there is this long chain of things we get out of each barrel.
But diesel , and Jet-A  are in a narrow band  along that chain.  Depending on where the barrel is produced.
In Kern County , California  they still pump steam down hole, just to get it to flow.

  37. Pogo –
Tell Mrs. P  not to hang out near big trucks.  Those big chunks of tires  you see are called  “alligators” .  They come off the trailers.  , retreads.
And when they fail , ten feet of live rubber at 70 mph weighing up to 120 lbs. flies  30 feet in the air , wiggling  like an alligator.
I have seen this , and it has happen to me .
Do not hang out around big trucks.  Pass them if you can .  If not, slow down  get some space.
All those tires on those tandems on those trailers are not running new tires.

And a fully loaded one weights  80,000 lbs.

  38. Everything has a day I suppose.  Today, it’s National Tap Dance Day! Who knew? But more importantly, it’s National Wine Day. I’ll DRINK to that.

  39. Bob, thanks for the advice.  If the 2 of us are in a car there’s a 97% chance I’m driving.  I learned long ago not to crowd trucks – got a broken windshield from a piece of gravel that freed itself from a truck tire years ago and decided it’s better to get around or hang back.  I would hate to think about getting hit with a failed tire tread – could do more damage than a live deer.  We have shitloads of truck traffic around here and too many drivers act like they’re scared shitless of actually passing the truck they are slowly going around. I see way too many drivers get alongside a truck and sit rather than pass.  Idiots IMHO, and they piss me off if I’m trying to get around the truck they’re parked next to.

  40. https://www.texastribune.org/2022/05/25/greg-abbott-political-fundraiser-uvalde-shooting/

“Hours after Uvalde school shooting, Gov. Greg Abbott attended a fundraiser 300 miles away.”

“Abbott, a prolific fundraiser, is running for a third term against Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke. O’Rourke’s response to the Uvalde shooting has included criticism of Abbott for loosening gun laws in Texas, and O’Rourke has called on Abbott to pull out of an appearance at a National Rifle Association convention this weekend in Houston.”

  41. Looks like the old SUV market is going to be hot.  VW, owners of the former International Harvester brand, is reviving Scout as electric SUV off road vehicles.  Taking on Ford Broncos and not Jeep.  This is like back in the late Sixties, companies putting out vehicles that will be used off road as utility types.  Now it is getting over rocks.  Okay, but I am waiting for a vehicle like my 1989 Full Sized Bronco.

  42. All this truck  talk brings me back to Jr, Brown / Dave Dudly/
Boke down south of Dallas  and  Six days.
When I was five , I stowed away in my dad’s   2 ton truck  when he came home for lunch.  When he got back to the warehouse , I popped up and said , “Hi Daddy”.
Three years later  I heard this on the juke box  at the  “Rock Inn” at Seymore , TEXAS ,
I was hooked.  Every  Summer for the next 4 years I fed that box to here  that sound in the Rock Inn.
Every lick  is so bright and crisp , I never got over that sound.

  44. Vote only for politicians willing to vote for the following: Waiting periods, background checks, limit size of ammo clips, gun training, insurance. There are a huge number of things that can be done without limiting gun ownership. All Politicians of whatever stripe can vote for these.

  45. Stay away from the trucks…lol
once in ‘83 I hadda go across Dallas/Ft Worth so I figured I’d plan on going thru around 2 in the morning and maybe miss a bunch of traffic. So it was that I was approaching Dallas around 2 AM and as I got closer i noticed I was soon surrounded by semi trucks, all of us going 80-90 mph.  Me in a ‘72 Chevy Caprice pulling an 18’ Prowler trailer.  It was hairy.  I was traveling in a 90mph air pocket created by the big trucks surrounding me. I had a CB so I could hear ‘em talking about me, but I could never let off from gripping the steering wheel long enough to chat back with them.  lol.
    Yeah, that was hairy.

  46. https://www.texastribune.org/2022/05/25/texas-bar-ken-paxton-2020-election/

“A disciplinary committee for the State Bar of Texas on Wednesday filed a professional misconduct lawsuit against Attorney General Ken Paxton for his attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential elections in four battleground states won by President Joe Biden.”

“It seeks a sanction against Paxton, which will be determined by a judge, that could range from a private reprimand to disbarment.”

  47. https://www.texastribune.org/2022/05/25/uvalde-texas-shooting-greg-abbott-response/

“Six mass shootings have occurred in Texas during Gov. Greg Abbott’s 7½ years in office. He has offered prayers and condemned each.”

“The slaughter of 21 at an elementary school in Uvalde was a “senseless crime,” which, Abbott added at a news conference Wednesday, “could have been worse.”

“In the past, Abbott has suggested state leaders could do something — would do something — to prevent the next mass shooting. That same call to action was missing from the governor’s remarks at Uvalde High School. Though at times his voice wavered in anger, Abbott made no specific proposals for the coming legislative session to address gun violence.”

“I don’t know which is worse, going through the motions when you have no intention of passing commonsense gun reform after a tragedy or just deciding that that’s not even worth mentioning,” Golden said.”
