  1. jack, perfect!

now on this longest (and probably the hottest for some folk) day of the year plus it being fathers day (giving dads a well-deserved day off), here’s another summer song to round out the musical ambiance

11 Things About the June Solstice (timeanddate.com)

When the Sun Seems to Stand Still
Solstice comes from the Latin words sol, meaning Sun and sistere, meaning to come to a stop or stand still. On the day of the June solstice, the Sun reaches its northernmost position, as seen from the Earth. At that moment, its zenith does not move north or south as during most other days of the year, but it stands still at the Tropic of Cancer. It then reverses its direction and starts moving south again.
    […]
It Occurs at the Same Time…
…all over the world. Technically, the June solstice is the exact instant of time when the Sun is directly overhead the Tropic of Cancer. In 2021, this will happen on June 21 at 03:32
    UTC.
    […]
The Earth is Farthest from the Sun
One might think that since it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere, the Earth is closest to the Sun during the June solstice. But it’s the opposite. The Earth is actually farthest from the Sun during this time of the year. In fact, the Earth will be on its Aphelion a few weeks after the June solstice.

Not Usually the Hottest Day of the Year
In fact, the hottest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere usually comes a few weeks or sometimes months after the solstice. This is because it takes time for the oceans and landmasses to warm up, which again allows for higher air temperatures. This phenomenon is called the delay or lag of the seasons.

  3. I am, like many of you have expressed too, tired of hearing “Critical Race Theory” as the current victim of gqp attacks.  I do not know who came up with that title, but it sure sounds like something someone made for their masters thesis.  How about we talk about it in terms we have been using for well over fifty years, institutionalized discrimination/racism.  It is baked into the Constitution, state laws, local laws and many, many other ways.  It is hard to attack something called what it is.

Happy Father’s Day to all you fathers and others who have spent their lives fathering.

  4. Jack,  Thank you for our weekly salute to Sunday and our annual greeting to Summer.

Patd – great article on the Solstice

BB – I’m equally fed up with GQP invented terms for their political attacks.

  5. BB, you’re right about the sound of academic jargon instead of plain speaking on CRT.

    wiki on its origins:

Critical race theory originated in the mid-1970s in the writings of several American legal scholars, including Derrick Bell, Alan Freeman, Kimberlé CrenshawRichard DelgadoCheryl Harris, Charles R. Lawrence III, Mari Matsuda, and Patricia J. Williams. It emerged as a movement by the 1980s, reworking theories of critical legal studies (CLS) with more focus on race. Both critical race theory and critical legal studies are rooted in critical theory, which argues that social problems are influenced and created more by societal structures and cultural assumptions than by individual and psychological factors.
Opponents of critical race theory argue that it relies on social constructionism, elevates storytelling over evidence and reason, rejects the concepts of truth and merit, and opposes liberalism. As of June 2021, eight U.S. states have enacted laws banning the teaching of critical race theory, and nine others are in the process of doing so.
    […]
Roy L. Brooks defined critical race theory in 1994 as “a collection of critical stances against the existing legal order from a race-based point of view”. Richard Delgado, a co-founder of the theory, defined it in 2017 as “a collection of activists and scholars interested in studying and transforming the relationship among race, racism, and power”

  6. jamie, thanks and much thanks on the bravo last night for my tirade (i’m guessing that was what the ovation was for. if not, thanks anyway).

  7. while scrolling thru in search of appropriate songs for fathers day – particularly looking for Belafonte’s “turn around” – i happened upon a song i couldn’t pass up even tho’ it has little to do with either summer or fathers day.  such a beautiful version, so poignant.

  8. Republicans saying Congress has no role in voting rights must be against past federal requirements that states allow women and blacks to vote.

  9. craig, thoughts are with you. today must be a bit difficult. after the loss of my father that 1st fathers day was hard.

one way to soften the emotional blow in coming years is to adopt a favorite mentor (or someone in the past who made a difference) to honor, send a card and thank him for his “fatherly” advice/help/inspiration.

  10. CC nice hat tip from the hometown paper.

Audie Murphy popped up today .
First that he was born in Hill County, Texas.  The same county where Willie came from.  And second , my favorite movie of his ran a little later.  “Fort Petticoat”.
Audie Murphy was the most decorated service man of WWII, he lied about his age to enlist .  He won the Metal of Honor .
After the war,  he made “B” westerns, and sleep with a loaded Colt 45 pistol under his pillow.
If you ever get the chance,  watch “Fort Petticoat”
Audie, about 60 or 70 women, and  about the same number of Comanches.
In an old Spanish Mission.  Trilling .

  11. How can Mitch look like a freshly thawed turkey , and still be alive?
Chuck Todd  ran the standard clip today  a talking 78 year old Butter Ball  wearing a red tie.  Flanked by the same totem poles
But that was before the born again  shark attack in Fla.
To see Pence  chewed on like that  was very telling.

“If Vance’s office doesn’t bring charges before he leaves office, then it will be left to the incoming DA to make that call, and come January 2022, the new Manhattan DA will be drinking from the fire hose with no time to ease into the job — which suggests that someone with high-level prosecutorial experience might be best positioned to succeed this time around.“

  13. I heard this idea  …….
Roberts  cares more about the court than grinding ole wounds.
There’s yer  split on the court .
Being a stooge of the new GOP is not on his radar.

  14. Craig – take the memories and replay them as you need.  My father died on the Friday of Father’s Day weekend.  It takes time, no need to rush. I see this as a time to think of the best and enjoy.

  15. Some more about our dads .
When the War broke out , the flood of young men  had never done these things =
    Seen a dentist
    Had an eye exam
    Graduated from high school.

  16. Completely recovered from my fall on Thursday.  I credit the Moderna vax.   Never healed so quickly before.

  17. I’ve gotten many requests today for donations in Dad’s memory. We set up St. LUKES Methodist church, attention Antony, for maintenance of their memorial garden where he, mom and her sister’s remains rest.
