“But I don’t want to go among mad people," Alice remarked. "Oh, you can’t help that," said the Cat: "we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad." "How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice. "You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.” ― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

  1. foxnews:

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., took to Twitter late Monday to lay out what seems to be the strategy in how Senate Democrats may approach passing legislation that would increase the direct payment amounts to many Americans from $600 to $2,000.
And his best offense seems to be a focus on defense…the defense funding bill, that is.
Sanders posted that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has made it clear that he wants to pass the defense bill despite President Trump’s veto, and an override attempt is slated for later Tuesday.
The House took the first step to override the president’s veto of the $740 billion National Defense Authorization Act on Monday in a 322-87 vote.
Sanders tweeted that McConnell wants to vote to override Trump’s veto “and then head home for the New Year,” but he wrote, “I’m going to object until we get a vote on legislation to provide a $2,000 direct payment to the working class.”
Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., said he would join Sanders until there is a vote on the $2,000 relief.
“That relief passed in the House today with 44 Republicans voting for it. Senate Republicans must do the same and get the American people the help they need,” he posted.
Warren Gunnels, the staff director for Sanders, tweeted that McConnell is expected to ask for “Unanimous Consent” to vote on the veto override and his boss will object until “we get a vote on $2,000 direct payments.”
“We can force the Senate to stay in session until the New Year. This is no bluff,” he posted.
Politico reported that Sanders will filibuster McConnell’s attempt to override Trump’s defense bill veto. The report said that Sanders cannot stop the override vote, but can delay it until New Year’s Day.
A source close to Sanders told the news website that the Georgia Senate runoffs were also a factor in his decision and would keep Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue in Washington for a greater stretch before the Jan. 5 vote.

  2. speaking of – or shall we say singing of –  those elephants, here’s parody project this time last year:

  3. Go for it Bernie!
Resolutions – so tough this year – too many to list.  Get serious about knee exercises.  Get the delayed maintenance at the Pogo homestead done this summer.  Move my shit in the basement to the garage.  Lose the weight I gained in 2020(?).

  4. Enjoying the push back racists are getting on FB.  The posts are not deleted by FB so the responses are direct and vigorous.  I can just imagine the white supremacists beating up their keyboards trying to spread their hate, and it getting nailed with solid responses pointing out how wrong they are.  No matter how hard the far right yells about FB not allowing them to spread hate messages, that is a lie.  FB is very much not removing a lot of hate messages.  FB maybe removing incorrect information about COVID vaccine, but the rest is left alone.

  5. Another of those  long fascinating Atlantic articles

  6. Nice to hear Facebook environs is being cleaned of racism.

I on the other hand am still suspended from Facebook with no response to my queries.  Maybe after the holiday.

Considering all the bullying crap on the site, it really makes no sense so I must have put a huge burr under someone’s saddle.

  7. Jamie – I have a warning hanging on my account.  After last night when I started dumping Jesus Bible quotes on a racist I thought I would wake up this morning locked out, but no.  So I will blithely keep going after the racists and white supremacists.

  8. One small piece of good news on the virus front – from the Wapo virus tracker the 7 day average of daily deaths dropped from 2668 on Dec. 23 to 2202 as of today.  Could be a function of delayed reporting over the holiday and weekend, and the Monday count dropped only 50 from 1/21 to 1/28, and it will likely go back up over the next 2 weeks, but it’s a small piece of better news than we’ve seen since cases and deaths began their upward trajectory around the first week of November.

  9. BlueBronc…  I had a FB friend get put in FB jail for 3 days yesterday for suggesting that because Melania married SFB in order to get a visa into this country it made her a prostitute….   go figure!

  10. BB, I am sure that there will be the surge following the Christmas holiday Fauci fears.

Aside from arranging reunions, engaging pictures of pets and kids, Facebook is the devil.

  11. OK, so over the weekend I listened to Jonathan Capehart’s interview of Dionne Warwick.  I’d put her in the category of vaccine agnostic, not disbelieving but wanting to be shown before accepting belief. I don’t begrudge those who want more info on the vaccines’ effectiveness and effects – we do not know how long the immunity either of the vaccines provide – and it’s entirely reasonable for anyone to want to know that before taking the dive.  I’m comfortable enough with the trial results of the Pfizer vaccine to go ahead and get the first round and hope I won’t have to repeat a 2 dose regiment yearly, but if that’s what it takes, being in a higher risk group, then so be it.  Vaccine agnostics have different “show me” levels and that’s OK.  I set my threshold lower to protect myself against the virus atheists, the idiots who don’t think but just say no, vaccine atheists and against the agnostics until they do get vaccinated.

  12. Pogo…  I heard Jason Johnson on MSNBC explain that the black prison population has been used as guinea pigs for trial drugs for years.  And because of that…  there is a general mistrust of this vaccine within the AA community.

  13. I get that, Renee. I sympathize, but the AA community is also getting hit harder by the virus than whites. Individual decisions that affect everyone. It’s a pandemic and I’d urge everyone to get the vaccine- like wearing a mask.

  14. Good on the Harrington.  I hope the Proud Boys (assholes) don’t focus their violence on the hotel.

  15. hope other bars also close down. d.c. police will be overwhelmed if they don’t.  proud boys & ilk aren’t nice normally so imagine what they’re like drunk.

wash times on their latest plans:

Members of the Proud Boys plan to blend in with other people attending protests being held for President Trump next week in Washington, D.C., the leader of the controversial men-only group said Tuesday.

Enrique Tarrio said members of his group will be dressed in disguise in D.C. on Jan. 6, the day Congress counts Electoral College votes and affirms Mr. Trump’s loss to President-elect Joseph R. Biden.

“We will not be wearing our traditional Black and Yellow. We will be incognito and we will spread across downtown DC in smaller teams,” Mr. Tarrio, chairman of the Proud Boys, said on social media.

“And who knows….we might dress in all BLACK for the occasion,” Mr. Tarrio posted on the social media service Parler. “The night calls for a BLACK tie event.”

Hundreds of uniformed Proud Boys participated in pro-Trump protests held earlier this month in D.C. on the heels of the Republican president losing his race for reelection to his Democratic challenger.

Those protests culminated in several people being stabbed, as well as notably the destruction of a “Black Lives Matter” sign that was stolen from a historic Black church in D.C. and then set on fire.

Mr. Tarrio, a former Republican congressional candidate, has said he was among several Proud Boys who set fire to a “BLM” banner shortly after it was stolen. He had been at the White House hours earlier.

  16. Given that Moscow Mitch is elderly and in failing health (zombie hands), and, given that he can take neither his money nor power with him, he is just a sorry excuse for a human being.   His disdain for suffering Americans is despicable.

  17. mortonie, Mitch has a heart of little more than coal.  He better hope the Christian story is not true or eternity is going to be a very unpleasant end for him.

  18. Hi Mortonie

I definitely remember well all the children of the US putting dimes on long strips of tape and sending those strips to the March of Dimes.  I spent hours in support of them due to my step sister contracting polio and being paralyzed from the neck down.  She wasn’t as lucky as Monster Mitch since after six years she passed away during spinal surgery.

  19. The next pandemic may come from factory farms.  A more virulent swine or avian flu.  Human interaction is the culprit, whether trafficking exotic animals or incarcerating them in muck-filled pens to await slaughter.  We do it to ourselves.

  20. Reading the social media concerning the failure of two thousand dollars not going to peoples bank accounts leaves me with a “you did not think the old chinless fart would kill it?” (apologies to people with weak chins).  For some reason people thought the turtle was not going to stop the payments.  He has no problem taking the hits, after this gig he is heading to someplace warm and not in Kentucky where a lot of people do not like to see him.  Can something be done?  It is possible, but as long as he and McCarthy are sill not in the ground not much can be done.  We know he will do the same thing to Biden as he did to Obama.  Even though Joe is hoping to have some level of working with turtle, it will not happen.  Biden needs to plan on what to do with no senate votes.

  21. I know a woman who had a mild case of covid 7 months ago and still has finger problems.  She says she doesn’t want to get it again.  So when he sister bought the plane ticket for her to fly to San Diego on Christmas from Dallas, she was on the plane. She just texted that because everything’s closed in CA and her sister wanted to get her hair done, they drove to Tucson and then Phoenix!!
    I don’t know.  I just don’t.
