Moments after a historic vote to impeach President Trump, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the House could at least temporarily withhold the articles from the Senate — a decision, she suggested, that could depend on how the other chamber chooses to conduct its trial on Trump’s removal.
“We cannot name managers until we see what the process is on the Senate side,” she said, referring to the House “managers” who present the case for removal to the Senate. “So far we haven’t seen anything that looks fair to us. So hopefully it will be fair. And when we see what that is, we’ll send our managers.”
The comments came as a group of House Democrats pushed Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other leaders to withhold the articles — a notion that has gained traction among some on the political left as a way of potentially forcing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to conduct a trial on more favorable terms for Democrats. And if no agreement is reached, some have argued, the trial could be delayed indefinitely, denying Trump an expected acquittal.
Pelosi would not answer questions about whether she was entertaining an indefinite hold on the articles — one that could prevent a trial from taking place before the next presidential election.
We’re not having that discussion,” she said, adding that it “would have been our intention” to send the articles forthwith, “but we’ll see what happens over there.”
She continued: “We’re not sending it tonight because it’s difficult to determine who the managers would be until we see the arena in which we will be participating.”
The remarks injected an unexpected wrinkle into a tightly choreographed day, in which a series of procedural votes and hours of floor debate paved the way for climactic votes after 8 p.m. on Trump’s impeachment — the third in U.S. history.

Under the rules the House adopted Wednesday for consideration of the impeachment articles, a resolution naming the impeachment managers — and authorizing the transmittal of the articles to the Senate — can be called up at any time by Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) or a designee. There is no time limit on that authority; the House is expected to recess for the winter holidays as soon as Thursday and not return until Jan. 7.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Hoyer did not rule out the idea: “It’s an interesting proposal. I don’t think that that’s the path we will follow, but that does not mean we will immediately deliver it. There are considerations related to other legislation.”
A senior Democratic aide who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe internal deliberations on Wednesday confirmed the impeachment articles will not be immediately transmitted until Pelosi names impeachment managers.
“There will be a debate and vote on that resolution” naming the managers, the aide said.
If a significant number of Democrats refuse to vote for that resolution, they could force the articles to be further withheld.
Narcissist in Chief Trump can boast that he’s the first President to be Impeached in his first term and earned more votes to Impeach than both Johnson and Clinton.
BBC:
History was made when Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi banged the gavel and made the impeachment of President Donald Trump official.
After hours of debate, the House had voted 231 to 197 on the first charge of abuse of power.
But as members of her party began to clap in celebration, Ms Pelosi shot them a glare to cut it out.
She has always maintained that impeaching a president was a solemn exercise.
Mitch speech ultimate denial of facts but a clever manipulation of process arguments.
This should be interesting. Speaker Pelosi may be considering John Dean’s suggestion that she hold this impeachment articles from going to the Senate. Even if only for a month, that gives SFB lots of time to really do even more stuff to help convince a handful of senators to switch from the low intelligence creep to the good side. And, it gives Speaker Pelosi more time to mess with his brain (or whatever pile of horse apples is inside that skull).
Credit where due: the first person i saw recommending holding the articles from the Senate was Mr. Craig Crawford, right here.
Did you all hear the one dumb Republican congressperson crying that he spent two Christmases overseas (in military service, one would assume- he didn’t say why) and only got 30 seconds to speak during the impeachment debate, when it is his OWN party’s leader who was responsible for allocating time to him???
Then, the very next Republican speaker used the 30 seconds Doug Collins gave him to hold a satirical 30 second moment of silence. Yes, that’s right- he flagrantly wasted the 30 seconds for which his fellow Republican colleague spent two Christmases overseas.
Why isn’t more attention given to the Republicans like Tom Ridge who have come out for impeachment and removal of Donald Trump. The incompetent news media complains about the lack of goopers criticizing Trump
yet there is virtually no coverage when people like Tom Ridge speak up and then there is virtually no coverage of the Republican primary. And why isn’t there any coverge of the goopers only way to win is tosuppress votes. They don’t want to have the primaries and they are trying to kick Democrats of the voting rolls. How unAmerican how undemocrtic and now how Republican.
MSNBC had a squadron of pro-impeachment former ripper congressmen on last night. Too bad you missed them, Ms Jamie, ‘cuz they minced no words.
Maybe Speaker Pelosi can hold delivery off until after the bank and tax records come through. That way, there can be another vote on another couple of articles.
The House can ‘run’ the charges over to the Senate one at a time, if Moscow midge doesn’t play fair with the first one. I figure that by the fourth vote, Moscow midge might allow a secret ballot.
…the only thing i hear when ppl talk about “Star Wars”:
Historical Note
trump is the 2d person to be impeached in his first term. andrew johnson was impeached in his first and only term as president. He served out the last 1,419 days of Lincoln’s second term.
As trump got into the WH through massive cheating, and actually lost the popular vote, he is the first usurper to be impeached in his first term.
Usurper babybush was not impeached, although as trump noted years ago, he should have been impeached and removed. That impeachment could have succeeded only if vice usurper cheney had been removed first.
.
patd, you have the best cartoons!
Cartoons of Moscow midge are looking more and more like the old cartoons of jesse helms.
SFB is the only president (of 2) to be impeached in his first term following election to the office.
I agree that you will see on MSNBC (and Fox and CNN) things pertinent to the politics of the day that are not covered by mainstream news orgs with broader viewership, so I get KGC’s point. But yes, you might see the stuff like the Tom Ridges of the world calling for SFB’s head on a platter – but you have to go search it out, which is (a) difficult to do if you don’t know it’s happened and (b) it’s impact will be limited when it’s carried on the cable news stations rather than on the big 3 (or 5).
Trumpy was in Battle Creek last night. Once again failing in an attempt to be humorous.
Mr Pogo,
That makes trump only the second ‘president’ impeached after his election.
Or, the first usurper to be impeached.

A tuning tide? Christianity Today Magazine founded by Billy Graham has called for Trump’s impeachment and removal from office.
“Trump’s evangelical supporters have pointed to his Supreme Court nominees, his defense of religious liberty, and his stewardship of the economy, among other things, as achievements that justify their support of the president. … None of the president’s positives can balance the moral and political danger we face under a leader of such grossly immoral character.”

Sometimes I think we are on the same wave length. I’ve been listening to Canciones de mi Padre most of the day. I just love this one:
Oops I see Sir Sturgeone already beat me to the Christianity Today article.
Like having fewer candidates on stage. Not coming across well, IMO, Biden & Yang. Coming across better tonight, Tom Steyer.
Opened my mind to all dems tonight. But right back where I started: confused and scared.
We got to Orlando last night for holiday. a perfect 71 degrees today, bit warmer tomorrow.
Dad just picked Biden-Warren ticket. For now.
Jamie, your gal Amy is having a good night, seems like she got more time than ever.
if you’ve really never seen that, Sturge, it’s an honor.
”those near and, far wars…”
Edit: Oh, you were busy gigging when that was on Saturday nights. understood.
Wow.
Amy cleaned up, especially on CNN in the first half hour after the ‘debate.’
i’ll vote for Amy.
You fine folk are lucky enough to have known the era of the lounge singer, firsthand. Am jealous.
Well, I missed the debate tonight. Caught snippets on MSNBC and the Daily Show. Lessee, Buttigieg did well. Amy did well. Biden didn’t lose. Bernie! did his best Bernie! characature. Lizzie hovered. IOW no knockouts. No flameouts. Did I really miss anything?
Ah, Mr Bink, you have little reason to feel jealous.
There were some great male lounge singers. About 1 out of 10. Bill Murray’s lounge act sounded like way too many of them.
I always preferred a rousing Mustang Sally, even a little off key, to a faux Latin crooner in rings and chains, pastel velour, ruffled shirts, wide lapels or bell bottoms.
Female lounge singers always seemed better equipped to hold my attention.
That’s all. Thank you for your patience. Goodnight and sweet dreams.

Nancy Pelosi schooled trumpty dumpty last night… and today she’s schooling Moscow Mitch… gotta love a woman as tough as that.
OTOH… Gabbard voted “present” on both counts of impeachment. ~~~Glad to know she can make the tough decision when it’s needed.~~~
Best meme I’ve seen on Facebook this morning.
Clinton: gets impeached by Republicans over a blow job.
Trump: gets blow job from Republicans during impeachment.
Mah, mah, mah Moscow Mitch quotes the FAKE print media in his whiny, bitchy talk in the senate.
