while we’re waiting for that ‘toon to load, an announcement from a true friend of democracy (an endangered species and getting harder to find these days):
When I turned 80 three years ago, I retired my weekly PBS series and have since focused on the web with a small, dedicated team as the avenue for our journalism. Your response rewarded our efforts, and we have been pleased and grateful for your interest and attention. I treasure the many messages from so many kindred spirits.
Now it’s time for another farewell, and with this note I am signing off.
BillMoyers.com will continue to serve as the archive of the television journalism my colleagues and I have produced over the past 44 years. I hope you find it useful. The site will go into archive mode on Wednesday, Dec. 20.
Until it moves to a new home, our Trump-Russia timeline, created by the indefatigable Steve Harper and orchestrated by our producers, will continue to publish right here at BillMoyers.com, tracking the convergence of events connecting the Trump empire and Russian oligarchs now being investigated by special counsel Robert Mueller.
Watch this space and our social media (Facebook, Twitter) for more information in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, please remain vigilant and engaged as citizens in the civic and political life of your community and our country. Democracy is fragile, and no one can say with certainty that it can withstand the manifold risks to which it is now exposed.
Thank you for the company we have shared in this space — and good luck to all.

from salon:Donald Trump is convinced Robert Mueller will exonerate him personally: report
There is a disconnect between reports of how President Donald Trump is privately feeling about Robert Mueller’s probe and how his political allies are publicly attempting to discredit that investigation.
Trump has privately expressed confidence that Mueller was soon exonerate him completely from accusations that he colluded with Russian government officials in order to win the 2016 presidential election, according to CNN. Even though the president’s cheery attitude could change after his private lawyers meet with Mueller later this week, for the time being Trump seems convinced that his legal woes involving Russia will soon be over.
Via CNN:
The president seems so convinced of his impending exoneration that he is telling associates Mueller will soon write a letter clearing him that Trump can brandish to Washington and the world in a bid to finally emerge from the cloud of suspicion that has loomed over the first chapter of his presidency, the sources said.
CNN reported Trump repeatedly refers to the accusations against him as “bullshit” and insists that he “doesn’t know any Russians.” One source recalled, “The President’s mantra is ‘All this Russia stuff, it’s all going to wrap up soon.’ He repeats it as fact. Part of me is like — ‘Are you serious? You believe this?'”

For those wondering why SFB giving CIA info to the KGB/FSB/GRU/SVR is so bad is that the Russians had to be monitoring communications too. If they had not picked up the information on their own, they now had a way to go back to see where they failed. They also know the capabilities of the CIA/NSA. Overall the moron gave away American secrets to an enemy, giving aid and comfort is one way of looking at it. He once again compromised the American intelligence services to the Russians.
One of the ways that Republicans used to get under the skin of Democrats is to ask them why they hate America. Now, I say… ask Republicans why they hate Democracy… why they hate the Constitution… and why do they hate the Bill of Rights.

It wasn’t like this 20 years ago but now at QuikTrip everybody lines up one single line at the one cash register. They used to line up on both sides crowding to the front. spreading down the counter toward the other 3 cash registers. The 2 lines were more efficient as the clerk didn’t have to wait to ring up the next customer. They also will bring in another clerk faster than if you are patiently waiting. I still do it the old way walk up to an empty space on the counter put my stuff down, pull out my money and wait. I’.m usually next as the clerk turns to me. I then point to the next person in the other line and say No they were first. Then miracle of miracle’s a new clerk starts checking. It happens most every time. Patients get you nowhere.

Mrs Jack works with a lot of engineers
Engineers are just naturally conservative people, it is in their make up and in red states almost always Republicans. Last week she was in Nashville working and stepped out of the room for a minute. When she came back the 4 male engineers were talking politics/ the tax bill and were all skeptical, One of them even sent her this cartoon.
craig, love the handmade ornaments, but how trust worthy is toby around them and that tree?
Patd, one of the many amazing things about this dog is that she has never touched anything that she knows is not hers.
Mrs. P loves to overdo the Christmas decorating – which falls on me. I’d be happy with a tree like yours, Poobah.
Poobah, you sure that’s a dog? I’ve never had one that had any respect for property rights – especially as a puppy.
BB, it’s just beyond belief isn’t it? The damage that will have been done to this country by the time SFB gets out of office will probably always be underestimated.

House GOP’s New Strategy May Cause a Pre-Xmas Government Shutdown It has been obvious all year that so long as Democrats have the power to stop legislation via a Senate filibuster, congressional Republicans could not insist on their way or the highway. That is why their health-care and tax bills have been advanced via a budget procedure that prevents filibusters. But they cannot use that procedure for the routine appropriations measures that keep the government functioning. So although both parties have postured and issued threats about shutting down the federal government in lieu of a deal on spending for the current fiscal year, it’s unlikely (especially right before Christmas) unless stupidity breaks out. Unfortunately, stupidity may indeed be breaking out in its traditional stomping ground, the House GOP Caucus, where Speaker Paul Ryan is toying with a too-clever-by-half strategy of passing a spending bill that only a House Republican could love, and then adjourning for the year, leaving the Senate with the unsavory choice of accepting the bill or shutting down the government three days before Christmas (when the last stopgap spending bill expires). Keeping the government open in that scenario would require at least eight Democratic votes in the Senate (or perhaps more if one of the ailing Senate Republicans cannot be there). The two items House conservatives hope to get from this take-it-or-leave-it strategy are (1) a breach of the precedent whereby big increases in defense spending are matched by roughly equal increases in non-defense spending; and (2) a bill free of liberal riders like the Obamacare stabilization legislation that Mitch McConnell promised to Susan Collins, or a level of additional funding for hurricane and fire disasters that conservatives consider too high…. […] Politico reports significant pessimism about how this will go:
“Right now, they’re just headed straight off a cliff,” one person familiar with the negotiations said of the House. “[The] Senate’s not likely to jump with them.”
[…..] It’s entirely possible, of course, that cooler heads will prevail even in the House Republican Caucus and everyone will agree on another stopgap bill without the extra money for extra defense-only money. But that’s not the party line presently, as the Hill reports today: If House Republicans pass this kind of bill and leave town, it will be a cold and bitter Christmas for a lot of federal employees. But hey: the GOP base, which would probably support a permanent government shutdown until it began affecting them personally, would be happy.
“…she has never touched anything that she knows is not hers.”
craig, as pogo intimated, most dogs think the whole world and everything in it is theirs (unless a bigger dog disagrees).

When our dog was a puppy, (she’s 12 now) Mrs. P accused me of teaching her that it’s OK to chew on shoes. I did give her one of my old shoes as a toy when she was still a very small puppy – and she chewed on it. She also chewed on other shoes from time to time – and sometimes they were Mrs. P’s. While I like to think our dog is pretty intelligent one, as dogs go, I really am skeptical about her ability to grasp the generalization of “shoe”. If she didn’t chew on all manner of other things such as balls (from golf balls to soccer balls), bones, sticks, small toys, dish towels, the corners of her bed (at least 4 different beds at last count), etc., then I might buy what Mrs. P is selling and take responsibility.
I think her greatest talent now is making strangers feel welcome when they come into our house. She would probably point out the nice stuff to would be thieves so they wouldn’t be mad when they left.
I will always wonder and never know how she became a stray without a collar. Because she obviously was extremely well trained.
Of course trump’s only guilty of violating immigration and labor laws, voyeurism, stalking, sexual assault (including possible rape of a minor), inciting to riot, violating election law on foreign donations, obstructing justice, violating the Logan Act, failing to register as a foreign power, money laundering, espionage, sabotage, and treason.
Other than that, trump is fairly clean.
