Comey Backfire

Firing the guy investigating him won’t help Trump one bit. Now, his enemies, even Republicans, in Congress will be emboldened to take the Russian collusion investigation a step further. Just like Nixon discovered with his abuse of power in the Saturday Night Massacre, perhaps the dumbest and most incriminating move by any president until this.

Bring it on.

Immediately following the absolutely shocking news of FBI Director James Comey’s firing, CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin was pretty much on fire with hot take after hot take on the bombshell announcement.

  2. wapo:  The wrath of CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin (rivaled only by the New Yorker’s John Cassidy)

Of all the instant reactions and hot takes on President Trump’s decision to fire his FBI director, few seemed as blunt as Jeffrey Toobin’s.

The CNN legal analyst and longtime New Yorker staff writer didn’t mince words when he was asked to provide some context on the sacking of James B. Comey, the top official leading the probe into possible ties to the Russian government by members of the Trump campaign.

“It’s a grotesque abuse of power by the president of the United States,” Toobin told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.

“This is the kind of thing that goes on in non-democracies,” he said, “that when there is an investigation that reaches near the president of the United States or the leader of a non-democracy, they fire the people who are in charge of the investigation.”

Toobin went on to say that “if anyone thinks that a new FBI director is going to come in and the agency will just take over and continue their investigation as if this had never happened, that’s not how it works. They will put in a stooge who will shut down this investigation.”  He specifically mentioned New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.

  3. OK, now that I got that off my chest. Let’s turn to the substance of this. Trump praised, that’s right praised Comey for leaking, OK discussing, the reopening of the Clinton email investigation 11 days before the election, called it courageous I believe. Now he fires him for publicly, well, in front of Congress, discussing the email investigation. What a load of crap.

  4. For those who like to see what the military is seeing and reading, you might want to subscribe to the Early Bird Brief  It collects stories from all around the globe that impact on the armed forces.

  5. lizzie clear, cool and collected on comey firing….”comey fired because of the Russians”

  6. I haven’t watched cable news in years.  Watched last night from 7:00 – 11:00.  Mostly MSNBC with a bit of CNN thrown in.  Geez…  Rachel Maddow’s delivery is awful!  But Rick and I were fascinated by political machinations once again.

Jamie…   love that list at the end of the last thread.

Can’t wait to see what Schumer is going to say to the Democrats in the Senate this morning.

  7. trevor was clever too

President Trump fires FBI Director James Comey, and former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates testifies about the timeline leading up to Michael Flynn’s firing.

  8. When pussyhats fly!   My hat popped-off my head when I heard the news.

trumpence chinese finger trap and the only way out?  resignation.

  9. I realized the firing was really bad news for the WH when WH basement rat, conway, emerged to double speak on the letter from the DOJ.  She looked so unkempt, unwashed.   This morning she is coiffed and her face is stuccoed.  HighDef lying.

  10. Trump sitting down for interview tomorrow with Hugh Hewitt.  The yellow stripe down the President’s back is really showing.

  11. The deferments were a clue and now the internal core of the man is really coming to light.

  12. “…dumbest move by any president…”

Trump loves superlatives.  He’ll probably take that statement as a compliment.

Pence in the on-deck circle, ready to take the donut offa the bat & step up to da plate.  Da?

  13. Long term things to keep an eye on that could be potentially dangerous.  Census Bureau Director Resigning

An accurate population count from the 2020 census is required to produce Congressional districts.  If that count (and the other info re households) is tampered with or just inadequate in anyway, it affects all sorts of governmental programs.

  14. Last night, someone said that Conway always looks as though she is trying to explain to a police officer that she isn’t drunk. The Nixon Library also tweeted: Fun Fact: Nixon never fired the FBI director. I keep hoping that the next person who gets fired is Trumpy.

  15. I found the use of the word,’terminated,’ rather than the traditional trump ‘you’re fired’ in the comey firing letter a nod to arnold and his bad ratings.

trump has been hiding for days…his staff probably deleted the reference to ” I had them on the strawberries’ line in the termination letter.  King baby, dumping another load on humanity.

  16. on board the good ship lollipop next, kallstrom.   guilliani’s trump fanboy and most likely nom for the top cop job.  he and sessions can get tough on crime.

  17. Rudy has that LifeLock experience. That will be a plus as FBI director. Identity theft? Not on Rudy’s watch!

  18. I realized the firing was really bad news for the WH when WH basement rat, conway, emerged to double speak on the letter from the DOJ.  She looked so unkempt, unwashed.

bw, so well said.  Sherlock would be proud of your deducing her appearance (in both senses) indicated “really bad news for the WH”  was afoot.

  19. russians are celebrating with 22 cases of nunes wine.  mocking and laughing at democracy, a stolen election.   we are all being played and the damage may be lasting.

WH is inhabited with a bunch of bad writers…not the level of Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul twists and turns.  Amateur hour.

  20. so I wonder if comey isn’t really really relieved to be gone from what must have been a nightmare situation and that eventually he (as well as yates) will be proud to have been fired just as some were proud to have been named enemies of a former prez.

from wiki re “Nixon’s enemies list”

Newsman Daniel Schorr and actor Paul Newman stated, separately, that inclusion on the list was their greatest accomplishment. When this list was released, Schorr read it live on television, not realizing that he was on the list until he came to his own name. Author Hunter S. Thompson remarked he was disappointed he was not on it.

do to all that they know, I hope both  he and sally are well protected and wary.

  21. comey has been a dead man walking for months.   the dems did leave many markers on the election heist before departing the WH and we can only hope those facts survive.   this is on the repugs and they are power drunk and hung over everyday.

  22. Jennifer Rubin – no Democrat she – has put her finger on the political bottom line.

Every single Republican must make a decision: Insist on full-throated, independent investigation of the firing, or be party to a possible cover-up. Every candidate for office in 2018 must be asked a question: If it is determined that Trump fired Comey to interfere with the Russia probe, would that representative vote for impeachment/senator vote to convict? Yes, it really has come to that.

  23. Ladies and gentlemen step up and place your bets. What announcement will come out of the White House today that will be dubbed “news” to divert attention from the absolutely horrendous press Trump is getting today over Comey’s firing?

  24. Keep wandering around among possibilities about Trump

    1.  Supremely ignorant about damn near everything responding to the last voice in his ear.

    2.  Crazy and/or diminished capacity being held up and covered up until at least 2020

    3.  Crazy as a fox with a talent for just how much he can get away with for the sake for greed & power.

  25. Number 1 is my pick.  He’s like your loud obnoxious neighbor who is in “sales” pinky ring and always has a cocktail and some outrageous story
Barely tolerable as a neighbor I can’t believe people voted for him.

  26. Liberals counting on Cons to do the right thing- when do they ever?  They do not give a fuck- they have power and they’re not giving it back.  If they have to kiss Donnie’s ring to fulfill their agenda while lining their wallets, they will, gladly, because he’s white and too stupid to care what they’re up to- he’s up to his own scams, anyway.  It’s like a fucking Thieve’s Guild.

  27. Meanwhile, from the nepotic swamp, mike huckabee’s daughter misleads the press.

  28. Elsa Prince Brookhuizen was the grand marshal of our Tulip Time parade today. She got a better reception than her daughter did down in Florida today. Thanks Craig. 🙂

  29. Yesterday evening the Devil  made me switch over from Rachel to Fox. If Hannity had gone to that tete-a-tete in the oval today, it would have been a nice little troika

  30. Melissa McCarthy can play Sarah Huckabee Sanders with less makeup. No brainer.

  31. Is Roger Stone making good on a 40-year-old grudge? – CNN

    https://apple.news/A3JKXQDSITUCZHfHLUVxG-Q

“Since the FBI investigation into Trump campaign ties to Russia was hitting close to home, both Trump and Stone stood to benefit from Comey’s dismissal. And given their 30-year history of working together to further their objectives by any means necessary, this decision fits well within an existing paradigm.”

  32. Time to subpoena Trump’s tax records, let Supreme Court decide, ala Nixon tapes case.

  33. Craig, Melissa would just have to play STOOPID to do Sarah. That could be difficult for her. But you’re right,  less makeup.

  34. I keep checking the news feed like something else is going to be reported at this time of night.

  35. Flatus. I, too, switched to Hannity last night just to see what defense he would use to support Trump. To my shock, he and his panel quickly thought the Comey firing was a great thing because now Trump would install a new FBI Director who would investigate and bring criminal charges against — wait for it — Hillary Clinton!  Talk about turning history and current events on its head, the program was just unbelievable. And, the Fox viewership is about double MSNBC and CNN.
