I’ve never seen anything like this in a major party nominee. Seemingly inciting violence against his foe in vague words that his team actually must try to walk back:
“If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks,” Mr. Trump said. He added: “Although the Second Amendment people — maybe there is, I don’t know.”
That is simply outrageous. This man should be shunned. For starters, Hillary Clinton has every right to refuse to debate him. He does not deserve the stage.
David Gergen on CNN last night: “This is wrong. It is wrong to raise the issue of violence. It is against the law to threaten any federal official. … Dog whistles go to crazies.. It’s a shameful statement to be making.”
Jonathan Wackow, former Secret Service, CNN: “These statements have ramifications. .. What about that one person who says maybe this is my moment.”
Jeffrey Toobin on CNN: “What Trump said today is certainly the kind of comment that would merit a visit from the Secret Service.”
Former CIA/NSA Dir. Michael Hayden on Trump: “If someone else had said that he’d be in the back of a police wagon.”
drop the gun, Donald, and step away. drop it. now.
political suicide by social media is not the answer to your problems. it’s not just losing the white house or winding up in the big house. it’s that no one now will feel safe anywhere near your name. not in the fancy hotels, casinos, golf courses. no one will want to contract for the golden franchise let alone rent a room or make a bet. poof! there go your billions up in virtual gun smoke.
as to the debates, from http://www.politico.com/story/2016/08/debates-clinton-trump-johnson-stein-226806 : Clinton-Trump debate sites plan for a third podium
With third-party candidates hovering near the threshold, the debate commission advises hosts to consider a bigger stage.
[….]
“With [former Gov.] Gary Johnson polling in some places more than double digits, they might have, some of our production people may have said, ‘Just in case, you need to plan out what that might look like,’” Commission on Presidential Debates co-chair and former Bill Clinton White House Press Secretary Mike McCurry told POLITICO. “We won’t know the number of invitations we extend until mid-September.”
To participate in one of the four general-election debates (three for president, one for vice president), candidates must be eligible for the presidency and “appear on a sufficient number of state ballots to have a mathematical chance of winning a majority vote in the Electoral College,” the commission announced last year. They also must have a level of support nationally of at least 15 percent as “determined by five selected national public opinion polling organizations, using the average of those organizations’ most recently publicly-reported results at the time of the determination.”
Johnson is hovering around 8.8 percent in national polls, according to RealClearPolitics’ average, whereas Stein, when included in polling, is at around 3.8 percent. Despite being below the 15 percent cutoff, there might be some flexibility in getting someone like Johnson on stage.
businessinsider: “I’ve been a little busy today. I heard about this Second Amendment quote. It sounds like just a joke gone bad,” Ryan said. “I hope he clears it up very quickly. You should never joke about something like that.”
btw, paul won his primary. now he’s free to really say what he means.
Awaiting the monsoon here…meanwhile in Janesville, the snake, Paul Ryan, won his primary and never mentioned the No.2 Amendment (during his winning speech). He is hoping for trump to have his wish about Clinton and then his problems are solved…HRC out-of-the way and trump heading to jail or court or both…then Ryan can step in. Believe me, if they can find a way to get rid of trump? This would be the easiest for them…we are dealing with scum. They will just deflect and they have their fingers crossed behind their backs…Mitch, too. Mouths shut and let the old lady get mowed down…most dangerous, crooked woman in the world. What a crock!! Only haters believe this stuff.
The hits keep coming…if we can keep her safe? I do believe Clinton will make a great President. This is very similar to Obama…I cannot imagine how difficult it is for a human to have others gunning for you, constantly. The pressure must be immense. Sending safe energy to HRC.
I’m on board with what Toobin said – perhaps Trump should get a little ‘talking to’ from the Secret Service. But not his Secret Service, rather the head of the PPD.
And as a side note, the father of the Orlando shooter can be seen sitting very close and behind Hillary at a campaign rally yesterday. Right-wing dumbtrucks making a big deal out of it – saying her campaign purposely put the Taliban loving father at an esteemed place at the event. For what it’s worth, the Clinton campaign said he got a regular invite to the rally – same one that everyone there got – and they didn’t know he was there until after the event was over.
d-300
If the shooter father was at a trump rally? That would have been interesting…this is just the big tent of the dems and the shooter’s dad? He is no putin…just a father with one half of the crazy DNA. Perhaps we need that discourse on mental illness and guns to continue. trump loves crazy and uneducated…give them a gun.
Oh he was there – sitting behind her taking cell pictures – wearing the red hat. A local TV station recognized him in the footage and posted the story. Here’s the link to the Fox news article – and of course they embellished with quite a few adjectives of their own
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2016/08/09/father-orlando-shooter-attends-clinton-rally-touts-candidate.html.
Faux News…in turmoil…I heard Dick Morris had to have sex with Ailes to get on air! The scandals keep coming and how did Stoddard end-up on Real Clear Politics? Wait until Faux News is exposed (I hear there is video with familiar sounds) and their political dirty tricks? Another investigation….the current pugs are building big dossiers in the intelligence communities.
It’s only August. Makes you wonder what the October Surprise could possibly be.
“…then Ryan can step in”
bw, he’s already next in line after biden. which only makes it harder and as you said above more “difficult it is for a human to have others gunning for you, constantly. The pressure must be immense.”
like you, sending all protective positive vibes I can her way.
Does this mean the media boycott is over?
Does that mean he released his taxes?!
Wait, is it that he said somehing so reckless and irresponsible, its more likely just pure stupidity? That’s every day.
raw story: ‘His candidacy is now toxic to democracy’: ‘Morning Joe’ panel denounces Trump for Clinton threat
He is going to have a rally today, or tomorrow, and he is going to address the controversy candidly, as is his way, and will say something even worse. $20.
I will say that kudos are due to Andrea Mitchell from MSNBC. Yesterday and I was driving I heard a discussion over Trumps economic plan when she broke into the conversation and said that everyone needs to focus for a minute and understand this is all about Trumps tax returns that we have yet to see. Good for her.
time:
The National Rifle Association on Tuesday began running a new advertisement against Hillary Clinton in battleground states, targeting the Democratic nominee’s trustworthiness and her views on the Second Amendment and gun control.
The ad, which is airing in a $3 million-buy, will play on national cable and broadcast channels in Nevada, Pennsylvania, Ohio and North Carolina. It is multi-purpose: the ad questions Clinton’s support of an individual’s right to own a gun and criticizes her character, appealing both to voters who are wary of Clinton’s progressive gun stance and distrust her.
is timing of this ad bad? stupid? absolutely not coincidental? or all the above
You know, when 9/11 happened I felt sorry for Rudy Giuliani. I mean, the attacks were against the USA, but specifically in NYC as far as the towers were concerned. But, as time goes by I’ve grown to dislike all the BS that comes out of his mouth. Whatever good will I felt for him after 9/11 has eroded away. Trump seems to enjoy saying things that can be taken in more than one way. And when it’s taken the way it has been lately he just seems to act like, “What did I say that was bad? That’s not what I meant.” The fact that there are people out there who are still defending him makes me shake my head.
I spend a day at the fair visiting my friends… didn’t pay attention to politics at all… and Trump says what?!!… geeeezus! No… this jerk is no longer funny… he is a total embarrassment. At least the underbelly of the GOP has been fully exposed. And boy do they deserve it!
Any politician who did not know this “kill the Clintons” attitude was out there had to have been asleep for more than 20 years. In 2008 the big thing was to put a “RUN HILLARY RUN” sticker on their front bumper.
I’ve been listening to this crap from the far right wing since somewhere around 1960, and it is just getting worse. There is a large segment of our population that is horrendously racist. Modern media has made it even more virulent, ugly and target specific. They found a home in the Republican party and they got power in the Tea Party.
The party can deny these facts from now until doomsday, but denial doesn’t change the eyes and ears of decent people.
Corey, ditto, only I never much liked him. I thought he did a credible job as mayor following the attack, but couldn’t stand his “law and order” bullshit, with Bernie Kerik (read prior federal inmate currently under supervised release here). Rudy sounded like a delusional idiot trying to explain away trumps’ 2nd amendment comment yesterday. His argument was “who you gonna believe, me or your lying ears?”
from guns to god?
cnn:
The Florida Renewal Project is hosting an event Thursday in Orlando titled “Rediscovering God in America Renewal Project.” Rubio, who is campaigning for reelection, is a headline speaker. Trump is scheduled to make an appearance, according to the American Renewal Project.
The Human Rights Campaign slammed the Republican candidates’ participation in the event, which is near where 49 people were killed in June in the Pulse nightclub, a popular gay spot.
“Just when you think Donald Trump and Marco Rubio couldn’t go any lower, they announce plans to court anti-LGBTQ activists in Orlando,” the group said.
hmmm, maybe nancy was spot on last month:
And I think that, so many times, white, non-college-educated white males have voted Republican. They voted against their own economic interests because of guns, because of gays, and because of God, the three G’s, God being the woman’s right to choose. — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to Judy Woodruff in an interview Wednesday
I’m with Craig on this one. No debates. It would serve no purpose other than to provide Trump with something resembling legitimacy. He has long since forfeited any such claim. He is nothing more than a reckless fraud. ‘
garrison Keillor: Trump as president is unthinkable. That’s why so many find it fascinating
from joe scarborough’s op ed in wapo:
The GOP must dump Trump
A bloody line has been crossed that cannot be ignored. At long last, Donald Trump has left the Republican Party few options but to act decisively and get this political train wreck off the tracks before something terrible happens.
Gay man’s message to Hillary bashers touches a nerve

The Gutless Old Party will just keep on Trumpin’

trump has relied on PR and publicity stunts of yesteryear, but the digital feed on him? Magnifies him…just as he likes it, on the cheap free press. trump is not thoughtful and the joker, the fool he has become is almost intolerable. I have seen so many petitions about stopping trump? Let him continue to be himself and let the repugs squirm. dems need to not worry about doing the repug’s job now! Save it for November and see an avalanche of support for Clinton, not just a measly landslide.
Fired food taster can’t even enjoy his vacay…lyin’ Chris.
KGC…between the toes and the chin? The mind wanders.
The “Some People Say” crowd are having a “Just Asking” field day on social media. Who needs to think when you can just speculate and have it believed by at least 30% of the voters.
To the pugs: You made your bed, now lie in it.
The repug bed of lies is getting a bit full! Let it be their problem and the sane ones have already thrown their support to Clinton. Dems need to be getting people registered to vote. Dems needs to push for early voting wherever possible. Focus on voting…not trump. Support your local dems.
Just listening to Katrina Pierson justifying Trump’s existence on msnbc. I was completely nonplussed by her glib, self-serving, grasp of the illogical. I still want to puke.
The problem with Clinton refusing to debate Trump is it takes the focus off Trump and placeses it on her. Keep the focus on Trump, Team Clinton is playing it just right. And my real amazment is how sstrongly they are responding to Trumps BS and it is sticking. He is not a teflon coated candidate anymore.
Jack
A quote from the Atlantic:
One of the few recent candidates to skip a general-election debate was President Jimmy Carter, who in 1980 bailed on a debate with Republican Ronald Reagan because he objected to the presence of John Anderson, an erstwhile moderate Republican running an independent campaign. As Cornell’s Roper Center notes, that was a strategic misstep: “61 percent of registered voters in a Gallup poll said he should not have made that decision. An NBC/AP poll found 30 percent of likely voters who had heard about Carter’s choice said it made them less likely to vote for him.” It also deprived Carter of a chance to face off with Reagan, even though he believed public showdowns with Reagan would benefit him.
hopefully, trump will flop and fold on the debate stage…I have to see that and I get tired of the do-gooders who want to deny me!
WAPO: The defenses of Donald Trump’s ‘Second Amendment’ comment don’t make sense. Here’s why.
It’s easy to identify the Trump “Stepford Wife”. They have huge, over made up eyes with a staring gaze while the mouth moves in a non-stop speech spitting talking points that make absolutely no logical sense except that it prevents anyone else from talking.
Swift exercise of the remote control is recommended to prevent brain damage to the viewer.
Thx, Craig for the article, but this is similar to Palin’s surveyor’s markings. Her crosshairs targeted Giffords and so many other innocents were murdered in the shootout. Palin never really paid a price for this or probably never got a visit from the feds for her targets.
jack, yes, he’s got to be the one who cries uncle. only he can call it off. if the debate officials or the broadcasting sponsors do, they will be accused (or seen as) being biased or bought off.
I think he will chicken out at the last minute unless by that time he has been ousted by the party, suddenly announced his withdrawal because of health or commitment papers have been issued at family’s request. she has to hang in there to prove that she can be trusted with the big stuff.
now is the perfect time for Obama to make a recess appointment of garland to scotus. strike while drumpf’s gun is still smoking. let the goper senate squirm their way out of it, whine about campaign needs, accuse him of presidential overreach…ignore the niceties. it is crucial that the seat be filled before whatever the October surprise brings or another chad debacle dangles.
I am with you patd and meanwhile, one headline reads…Make Socialism Great Again!! Bernie buys a third home for $600K. It is only a summer home…boy do I remember the post about the Clinton Cribs.
one of the reports I read this a.m. mentioned some comments were yelled by the crowd just before drumpf’s final and infamous call to arms. perhaps he was responding to those which would make it more interesting if we knew what these were…. I have an idea they weren’t limited to “lock her up”
Craig, I have never thought that trump was funny. I always took him seriously and early on decided to vote for the lesser of two evils…..
To me trump has replaced the Phyllobates Terribills as the most dangerous animal in the whole world….just one little touch of the P T…and you are sure to die..
Now is the time to pounce on the trump and all the Rs imo…….especially the leader of the Senate and the House…….let all the dogs out….all of them…keep Hillary right where she is at…but let all of the big dogs out…….like Carvelle and……
If thing were on the other foot….what do you think that all of them would be doing…anne the Colter, Dick the Cheney, Romsfeld, dick morris, and of course Karl the Rover………..
now is the time to take back both houses…..so queen hillary can do a fine job….and wont have any excuses………
As i said a while back, trump is shooting himself…..who would do business with him now…..unless they had a huge advantage over him…….later
Pat,
I agree 100% now is the time for Obama to take advantage of all of this…….he should name the next scotus
Hah, Solar! the frog has trump hands, too!

On a more cheerful note, filled Rosie up w/ Shell for $125.9/gal. Pump price was 167.9. Used a Shell gift card from Publix — $50 less $10 for buying $50 worth of groceries and less another 5% for being old. Net price $37.50 for a double bucket-full of gas.
One of these days Brooke Baldwin is going to break down and sob in sympathy on air. Obviously intelligent and competent woman. Would appreciate her ditching the acting school branch of broadcasting.
I doubt that even the rapist-republican strom thurmond incited the maniacs to violence when he ran for prez on th e dixiecrat ticket.
However, the FBI raided the Brooklyn offices of father charles coughlin’s fascist movement, made arrests, confiscated tommy guns & ammo. The FBI found a list of prominent and ‘dangerous’ people, including congress people, senators, Bernard Baruch, & Eddie Cantor, whom coughlin’s thugs were supposed to murder.
The oddest thing was that the AG did not throw the vile bastard or any of his foreign-born associates out of the country.
daily kos: Lost in All the Trumpoversy…No Ads. No Ground Game. WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING???
As so often happens, the big story of the day kinda washed out some smaller — yet equally damning — stories.
[….]
Trump campaign hauls $80 million in July, closing gap with Clinton
Trump beats expectations, raises $51 million with GOP in June
The logical question then becomes:
If he’s got all this money, and he’s not spending it on Ads, and he’s not spending it on building a field campaign…what is he doing with all that money?
In the first diary, Hunter puts the issue succinctly.
I think when it comes to Trump, deep suspicion is warranted. We know from what few FEC filings there have been, that Trump the Presidential candidate has already been a boon for Trump the rentier, to the tune of $6 million.
and another from daily kos: What if Trump is just a distraction?
…we’ve moved into the sane vs. insane territory and all but the lunatic fringe know that, and the lunatic fringe isn’t big enough to elect a President. What they can do though, is draw attention away from the really important matters.
What matters to me, is getting a progressive Congress elected, a Congress who will support Clinton when she takes office, and drive through the issues that will help the people like me, who live in the red states.
There is no good reason for Clinton to ‘debate’ with the deadbeat.
The campaign should put it out right now that Ms Clinton will only appear on stage with candidates who pass the requisite poll numbers, and who make their tax returns available for public scrutiny. Candidates who have no chance of winning the election have more work to do to earn space in the debate. Candidates who are too secretive about their past business dealings are not worthy of space in a debate.
Solar, it’s dangerous to refer to foot and dick morris in the same paragraph.
LOL
I haven’t listened to this since 2008, Must be something in the New York City water
Cause when I listened to it I thought Donald Trump.
Eh, Pogo , what is a little foot fetish among friends.
Jack, with my feet, I really don’t understand it.)-:
Although I did not expect the idiot to call for the assassination of HRC or the Supreme’s his campaign had already been there. So what is left after murder? Idiot did say he was so popular he could shoot someone and it would not affect his ratings. Is he preparing to sacrifice someone on stage? I hope the Secret Service puts the fear of jail into the fool.
What if Melania has been a Putin plant this whole time?!
*room spins, coffee cup breaks on floor*
They were serving Russian Chicken for lunch at my mom’s place the other day. I could only assume that is also something they serve at Trump Tower.
rippers are sending emails around claiming that Ms Clinton has had 94 people killed, beginning with Vince Foster. She’ll break 100 by election day. I reply that trump has even more exwives and bankruptcies.
I think Trump paid the guy to climb up the side of the bldg
Even if those smears were true, Ms Clinton would have to kill people at this rate for centuries to catch up to bush – or cheney – or rummy !
New York Police Department deserves credit for calm and intelligent handling of the Trump Tower climber. Well done in a truly strange situation.
The mayor is on tweety removing all doubt. God, is he a goddam idiot.
The Sec Serv and FECC should fine trump for making campaign security more expensive. Taxpayers shouldn’t have to bear the burden of the deadbeat bombthrower’s big violent mouth. I’d go for a $100 M!LL!ON fine for this latest offence.
Fines are not tax deductible, even if your campaign is a for-profit business.
yes good job resolving it..
Whose job is it to keep Trump Tower safe
If the 2016 Prez Campaign were a Scorcese flick, De Niro would have slapped the shit out of Donnie at least twice, by now.
Kudos to Craig for being the first person to ever use the words “calm”, “intelligent” and “Trump” in the same sentence.
Trump surrogates crazy people
The next time Clinton explains her testimony about the email server and the media starts chanting their liar chant. Send them this where comy got caught stretching the truth in his own testimony before Congress,
HRC did not send any classified emails. and any emails that nay have contained classified material was not properly marked.
As I reread comey’s testimony he was very clever with the “lying by telling the truth”
MATT CARTWRIGHT: “You were asked about markings on a few documents, I have the manual here, marking national classified security information. And I don’t think you were given a full chance to talk about those three documents with the little c’s on them. Were they properly documented? Were they properly marked according to the manual?”
JAMES COMEY: “No.”
MATT CARTWRIGHT: “According to the manual, and I ask unanimous consent to enter this into the record, Mr. Chairman.”
CHAIRMAN: “Without objection so ordered.”
MATT CARTWRIGHT: “According to the manual, if you’re going to classify something, there has to be a header on the document? Right?”
JAMES COMEY: “Correct.”
MATT CARTWRIGHT: “Was there a header on the three documents that we’ve discussed today that had the little c in the text someplace?”
JAMES COMEY: “No. There were three e-mails, the c was in the body, in the text, but there was no header on the email or in the text.”
MATT CARTWRIGHT: “So if Secretary Clinton really were an expert about what’s classified and what’s not classified and we’re following the manual, the absence of a header would tell her immediately that those three documents were not classified. Am I correct in that?”
JAMES COMEY: “That would be a reasonable inference.”
Jack
See, Boss? It’s funnier than ever.
Thanks in part to the Tea Burghers and various other factors, going back as far as Nixon, the GOP has become a conglomeration of paranoid schizophrenics.
a little bit from tonight’s pbs newshour on drumpf’s fitness to be prez
GEN. MICHAEL HAYDEN:
Look, I agree with Kris that you don’t want a president who is subject to external influence, external being outside of the United States, outside the proper course of our political process. I get that.
And I’m not carrying any brief here for Secretary Clinton. But what — I’m just simply pointing out that if you look at the series of things that the candidate has allowed himself to say, if he governs in any way consistent with those statements, I think we have grounds to be afraid, very afraid.
JUDY WOODRUFF: And you mean that literally?
GEN. MICHAEL HAYDEN: One of the things that prompted the letter was the seeming tenor of the campaign and of the candidate, frankly, to think that the world’s an ugly place right now simply because his predecessors were stupid or weak or corrupt.
The world is an ugly place because the world is very complicated place, and there doesn’t seem to be any appreciation for the complexity of the problems that he’s going to have to face as president. And if he goes in there with a simplistic understanding and simplistic answers, it’s going to make the world worse.
(CNN) A US Secret Service official confirms to CNN that the USSS has spoken to the Trump campaign regarding his Second Amendment comments.
“There has been more than one conversation” on the topic, the official told CNN. But it’s unclear at what level in the campaign structure the conversations occurred.
The campaign told the USSS that Donald Trump did not intend to incite violence, according to the official.
“No such meeting or conversation ever happened,” Trump tweeted in response to CNN’s report.
[….]
“Words matter my friends, and if you are running to be president or you are president of the United States, words can have tremendous consequences,” Clinton said. “Yesterday we witnessed the latest in a long line of casual comments from Donald Trump that cross the line.”
Oh, what do you know? The GOP nom called for insurrection, again today, in Virginia.
“So I just ask the people of Virginia and the people in this room, and in particular because we’re in such a mining area, give it one more chance. I know you’re discouraged. Give it one more chance.” -GOP nom

The only positive thing I can see from the Trump candidacy is that Paul Ryan’s political fortunes are sinking faster than Trump’s.
He may have won his primary but he can scratch being president off his bucket list. Not going to happen.
Sorry Paul, being president requires at least some semblance of a spine.
Jace – love your posts – but have to disagree re Paul Ryan. The Republicans don’t look at candidates as showing a spine, or having principles. That’s not how they’ve been trained. They look to rapid dogs and those who are willing to ‘trash’ the ‘other side’.
I remain quite uneasy about this Presidential race. If Trump were to stand up and say “I’m a good boy now”, and follow advisors, and speak to the Republican line – leaving the batshit crazy behind him; his numbers would jump 8 points.
Clinton is not a jewel of a candidate – she’s just the best alternative right now to an unstable lunatic. And if Trump “””acts””” like he’s stable and not a lunatic – this thing could significantly tighten. I would not be surprised, as we go into the beginning of November, that the race is within the margin of error. And that would mean that Trump has the big “MO”.
I really really really really really hope I’m wrong and misguided!
But alas, I fear I am not.
DV300,
you are not at all misguided. I share your concern.
My point is simply this. GOP elected officials can either turn a blind eye to Trump, (Paul Ryan) assuming incorrectly that somehow Trump is the lesser of two evils, or they are so divorced from reality that they actually believe that Trump is somehow a legitimate candidate.
Willful ignorance disqualifies them from holding office. Failure to recognize reality disqualifies them from being members of the human race.
In either case they have failed miserably to return something to a country that has given them so much. Therein lies their disgrace.
Trump is the symptom, their actions or lack thereof is the disease. It remains to be seen if they can ‘heal themselves.’ The prognosis however is not very favorable.
