  1. Bink, DV & BW, if you didn’t see my last comments to you on the previous thread, they’re on the “Now on the Trail” crawl in the right margin.

Will be watching Hillary’s and Chelsea’s addresses tonight with great anticipation.

  2. Bernie:

….what we are dealing with now is something kind of unique, and I believe, quite honestly, the worst Republican candidate in the modern history of the United States of America.”

Sanders added: “What makes him unique and extremely dangerous is he is a demagogue. He is a demagogue who does not believe in the Constitution of the United States of America, and that’s not Sen. Sanders talking, that is many Republicans, conservative Republicans, who are as afraid of him as many of us are,” he added.

  3. Abigail Adams, letter to John (March 31, 1776): “I long to hear that you have declared an independency. And, by the way, in the new code of laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make, I desire you would remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands. Remember, all men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation.”

  4. For our Clinton finale foodwise   -watermelon, tomatoes, fried chicken and maybe green beans

  5. Jamie, I haven’t looked for or heard of  any polls in the past couple of weeks that directly address the Bernie supporters’ trajectories, but the last one I saw indicated that 81-82% would vote for Clinton, 9% said no way, but not trump and 9 % said trump – if my recollection is correct.

  6. Jaime Harrison, the SC Democrat head dude, has worked very effectively in making the grassroots more diverse than it was in 2008. Back then Hillary was shut out pretty much in SC with Rep Clyburn marshaling local rural precincts against her. I was angry about it. I got over it and Hillary got over it, too. What resulted, because of her determination to put the Country first, is a better party and a state Democratic Party united in support of her. Now our task is to work the down ballot. Perhaps if we worked really, really hard we might even put SC in the Blue column. I would jump for joy if we could get rid of Joe ‘You Lie’ Wilson’, the congressman for our district.

  7. Yes Pogo sometimes I feel quite Southern but I never chased after the mosquito foggers

  8. Everywhere I look today is the picture of Obama hugging HRC. Thinking that it may become one of those iconic photographs that come along from time to time. It really was a picture that is worth a thousand words.

  9. Although I have heard the Mid-Atlantic states have been in a drought, our little spit of land in the Bay has had over eighteen inches of rain since June 1.

Right now the next pounding thunderstorm is over us.  Wind, heavy rain, lightening and thunder.  As dark and gloomy as the Republican alternate world.  Sailor cat just spent time whining and crying and pawing the door to go out in it (remember she likes lightening and thunder).  So I let her out and she ran around trying to watch the lightening show.  The lightening seems to be over so she wanted in.  Wet and nuts cat.

Tonight I would really go wild if HRC starts with “using my real voice. . .”  That Obama and Clinton would not only bury the hatchet, they would become campaign partners eight years later sets the Democratic tone for 2016.  I had a tear in my eye.  If she does as good as expected it should be as much a gully washer as what is going on outside right now.

  10. OK, will admit I teared up reading the Abigail Adams letter.

How I wish my Mom was still alive to witness tonight’s events. She was a Republican, but an old fashioned sane one 🙂 A Betty Ford type.

  11. I will never ever forget Ann’s 1988 keynote to the DNC.

“I’m delighted to be here with you this evening, because after listening to George Bush all these years, I figured you needed to know what a real Texas accent sounds like”, “Poor George, he can’t help it. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth”

  12. Closure! Love it.!

As if to prove me wrong, the picture isn’t worth a thousand words, just one word that says it all. Perfect!

  13. Andrew Cuomo gave a great speech.  Nancy Pelosi is looking good, but she went a little heavy on the botox tonight (that’s just a comment, not being catty … there are days when I wish I could afford it).

  14. Is it just me or did Nancy Pelosi seem to be having trouble reading the TelePrompTer?

  15. OMG Lou Dobbs just said that it is possible that the people who don’t like T and can’t understand that he was just joking about the Russians finding her emails are the ones who are clinically insane!

  16. My favorite on the above list before tonight:

Gracie Allen on the Surprise Party

“I don’t know much about the Lend-Lease Bill, but if we owe it we should pay it.” Another typical Gracie-ism on the campaign trail went like this: “Everybody knows a woman is better than a man when it comes to introducing bills into the house.” The Surprise Party mascot was the kangaroo; the motto was “It’s in the bag.”

  17. I could argue that Dolley Madison was the most qualified person to take over the White House, as sec’y for Thomas Jefferson and ‘Chief of Staff’ for her husband. James Monroe, too, was qualified, but nothing like Dolley.

The most dangerous enemies were months away, in those days. But still, they could raid and burn the slave-built White House. Keeping opposing politicians from killing each other was a Dolley Madison specialty. If she had been SoS, perhaps we would have missed out on the War of 1812.

  18. Chelsea will introduce her mom. Guessing that her remarks will be more substantive than the Trump clan. Guessing also the pundit class will be quick to find fault with her performance.

  19. In case you missed this on the news, The Mayor of Rochester NY put this up in Mt. Hope Cemetery next to the grave of Susan B. Anthony

  20. Note to Trump: Nothing beautiful about unbridled jingoism. RNC convention was amateur night.

  21. A registered voter just asked me if I think the world is flat.  No bullshit.  Be afraid.

Summoning my 5th grade science teacher- wish me luck.

  22. Bink

Apparently he or she never dealt with Pythagoras in geometry.  It has been since at least 500 BCE

Pythagoras was the first Greek who called the Earth round; though Theophrastus attributes this to Parmenides, and Zeno to Hesiod.” Early Greek philosophers alluded to a spherical Earth, though with some ambiguity.

  23. “We can not take this election lightly.” … A truer statement may never have before been spoken!

  24. Good lord – you folks listening to the father of the Muslim solder killed in Afghanistan?  This was one of the most powerful speakers I’ve heard this week.  Amazing!  If you missed it, look for the Youtube.  Kareem Abdul Jabbar introduced him.

  25. He asked Donald Trump he had ever visited Arlington cemetery, and then if he had ever read the constitution.  Then he pulled his copy out of his pocket and offered to loan it to Trump.

  26. Fox is interviewing Gen John Allen asking why he has endorsed Hillary. He is doing a great job but I doubt that anyone who thinks Fox is a “fair and balanced” source of news will be influenced by him.

  27. oy the current top question on google– what will Clinton will be wearing?

  28. Holy bandwith!  The internets are running slow here.  Historic night and if ratings are votes?  Look-out pugs.  Dems have put on a quality show…the love fest vs. the hate fest.   The summer of 2016 and we will all remember this moment for some time.

  29. Just catching up and saw last post- ATTA BOY CRAIG!! Theres the Craig we know and love, speaking out when no one else in his profession can or will.

  30. A very big thank you to Craig for providing a safe space for commentary of sometimes difficult issues.  Tonight is special in this special place.

  31. Goodness craig

I thought she just sounded lip synched and tired.  It’s been a long campaign

  32. One of my hopes is that at my death my children will say ” she was always there for me.”

  33. Craig

No that is what a woman recovering from childbirth looks like.  Hollywood skinny is not the norm.  Puffy and full busted with a poofy tummy is normal.

  34. Jamie…thanks for pulling Craig’s foot out of his mouth.  Chelsea wears red…courting the pug’s night.  She, like her Mom, gets too much unfounded criticism.   I know, herr trump offers perfect beauty.

  35. What,  the American dream isn’t getting rich developing real estate in NY? Who knew?

  36. There are show horses, and there are work horses.  Hillary is a work horse!!

    What a GREAT introduction!

  37. I am so glad she is letting the world know that she loves Bill … and he has let us know that he loves her ….. in spite of the problems they have faced due to human imperfections, they have stuck it out …. the right-wing christian world should respect that about them … just my opinion

  38. Do you think she promised Obamarama the next vacancy on the supreme court

  39. Geez, I truly thought Chelsea had another grandkid coming. Got lit up on Twitter. Falling in my sword.

  40. Miracle at Philadelphia Catherine Drinker Bowen. Read it to get a sense of what Hillary is referring to.

  41. I am almost overwhelmed by the fact that in 8 years I am watching history – undeniable history – for the second time. It didn’t come from the old white (orange now) party.

  42. she is doing a great job.

KGC  Clarence Thomas and Michele Obama sitting together on SCOTUS.

  43. Great speech.  She turned Trump’s “I” into her “We” and brought into focus the founding father’s knowledge of “The Commons”.  There needs to be balance between what we do as individual for individual rewards and what we do together to build a better place for us all.

  44. You are correct Craig.  I was hoping that she was not even going to mention his name.  Hoping she ignores him for the rest of the speech.

  45. Talking about her parents good. But she’s just not a natural at this stuff. That’s OK.

  46. At least she is keeping a somewhat natural speaking style.  When she slips into “conversational” it works.  She just needs to learn to do more of it.

  47. BW

Clarence and Michelle   there would be a lot more pressure to televise the court

  48. Thanks Jamie …. we are going to have to keep Craig honest it seems …. he has let his bias against H taint his opinion.  She is giving a great speech in a great voice ….. plenty of substance, looking us in the eye ….. serious …… inclusive …… not demeaning towards anyone …… acknowledging that she is not capable of improving America by herself but willing to work hard on ideas that are designed to enable us to make America better.

  49. I am waiting for the ending crowd graphic…listened to instructions on cspan.  A lot of this is campaign stuff…just in time for the nightly news cycle of the east coast.

  50. Blonde … I heard that too and thought “wow, those are a lot of instructions”  was thinking I would probably mess it up if I were there

  51. ” 70 odd minutes.   And I do mean odd. ” wonderful line. Might as well have said ashole, but classier than I would have done it.

  52. In reality, a stump speech at this point, not historical.  herr trump is on notice.

  53. One of my dear friends was a driver for Geraldine Ferraro during the ’84 election. He is the one who drove her from the St Paul Hotel to meet Walter Mondale at his North Oaks home on the night that he selected her. She never let on to her driver. Security, you know.

She was bright, gracious, idealistic, peppy, and beautiful all the way down to the bone.

    I never met her. Dammit.

  54. I think she is doing a great job

She is being self-deprecating and showing humor.  Her weakness is her public speaking and I think she has worked with her weakess here and turned it into a plus.

Just don’t go to long   quit on a high note!

  55. It is getting a little too long for us folks at home ….. but if I were there in person I would not be wanting this moment to end too soon ….. this is too historic for us to wish it cut short

  56. Sad to say HRC speech too long, vague and full of empty rhetoric. My grocery list more interesting. Might be the worst speech since Bill 1988.

  57. If she’s got to mention trump, that’s the way to do it – point our the hypocrisy.

  58. GREAT LINE:  A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons!

  59. Sorry to say, but getting too wonky. Too many issues, all important,  but go to a high, invite all in,  say thank you and end it.

  60. It is a bit of a laundry list, but rejecting all the GOP lies is hard work.  Overall, she’s doing a damn find job.  As we have been around the block before … enough with dramatic words … now what does it take to go to work and fix things.

Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.

And I love her because she is me and there are a whole lot of “Me” out there voting for her.

  61. Hubby thinks the length of the speech is fine…she owes her base, her donors.

For those who are old enough to remember Readers Digest?  I am in that camp.

  62. It sucks, just gotta say it.

Where was the editor to cut and improve it. There were greeat parts so it could have been a great speech but sadly not.

    Jack

  63. I’m with you Jamie ….. this night, this election is too important, and for the people there too special, for her to do a reader’s digest version of this speech ……

  64. Humor break due to length of speech…she should have plagiarized Michelle’s speech.

  65. Let our legacy get to be about planting seeds in a garden you won’t get to see.

Let’s build something better for all who follow.

  66. Planting seeds in a garden you may never see.

Chinese proverb:  When is the best time to plant a tree?  Twenty years ago.  The second best is today.

  67. It wasn’t ruined…let us relish in the fact that we will have Hillary to pick on and joke about for at least four more years!  I think she was smart.

  68. delegates fold on graphics…balloons…red balloons fall on stage…courting pugs.

  69. Craig

You really should have found a room full of women to watch this.  It would have sounded so much better to you..  🙂

  70. Final comment before I go to bed ….. Hillary and Bill show much more love and affection for each other than the Donald and Melania …. H and Bill actually touch when they hug, they lean in, they speak to each other, she rubbed his back, and they let the hug linger …. compare that to the way Donald and Melania hugged each other … it was at arms’ length, no real hugging, D grabbed her arm and kind of pushed it … no showing or sign of affection

  71. Ya know that speech was scary.

If she can’t take advice from professional speech writers what will she do in a crises.

    Jack

  72. Jack

Probably handle the problem, get the job done and then ask what she should say about it.

  73. Yeah, Jamie that is the scary part. And from the looks of the speech she won’t even bother to seek advice as to what she should say.

    Jack

  74. For Hilary, it was a very good speech.  She doesn’t have (and has never had) superior speaking skills (which are somewhat learned and very much natural).  Content for the most part was very good – a little disorganized, but nonetheless a 7 out of 10 (in my humble opinion).

Unless the world gets turned upside down I don’t see how she loses.  I predict a 6 to 8 point bump in the polls by next Monday.

  75. No holding hands! You got this far with no vomiting or explosive diarrhea (which God, Satan and/or unsanitary practices smote the Republicans with.)

  76. Hillary’s best line tonight: “A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man you can trust with nuclear weapons.”

  77. Workman speech rooted in middle america by someone who simply gets work done. … She is governed by goals  That is what she is.  And back we go to II Timothy 2:a5

Study to show thyself approved unto God A workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

  78. After the array of talented public speakers that preceded her this week the bar was going to be set fairly high. She did fine.

There were some lines that will work on the stump. There were some lines that were meant for those in the room.

All in all the night was hers and republicans should now be on notice. They will be facing one tough and determined candidate from here on out.

  79. Wow, the commentary sounds better on CNN for a change.. Please, this isn’t Hillary,s strength, Hillary has said this and even the president has recently.. The speech was very effective. Hillary answered many questions and took it to Trump, perfect for me..

  80. My going to sleep thought is that I am very concerned Democrats are making this campaign all about Trump. Reminds me of Carter ’80 thinking all they had to do was make us afraid of Reagan. At the end of the day I don’t know what this convention accomplished to show us why she should be elected.

  81. I know I’m like the fly that just won’t go away on this, but there’s the link to something very important.

  82.  “At the end of the day I don’t know what this convention accomplished to show us why she should be elected.”

Huh?? Where have you been all week? Have you not been listening?  The “why” was pounded home again and again.

  83. It is imperative that our candidates speak to the folks in the 20-40% quintile, and folks living in rural America. Many of these people are deathly afraid that they will fall into the underclass, and be passed up and bossed by city women or minorities. A college education as the way forward for the kids/grandkids does not sing to many of these people, in many cases because they’ve always viewed college educated people as snooty blowhards who have no ‘common’ sense. Look at the heroes in the popular movies set at the beach, in outer space, or in rural America. The heroes are not Atticus Finch types. The heroes are cute goodolboyz, who in the end stick it to the college educated villain and ride off with the girl. The people who internalize these fictions are the silent (often ignorant) majority to whom wealthy, college-educated, demagogues dick nixon and the bushes pandered. trump panders to them even as you wonder what can be done about it.

Clinton and other Dems will be well-advised to learn the lessons taught by horse operas, space operas, and beach movies. These lessons will help the candidates to make the connections to our clueless majority.
