Give Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) credit for creative use of her unique opportunity to elude rules against cell phones and cameras on the House floor during the recent Democratic sit-in protesting for gun votes.
The Iraq war veteran hid her smartphone in her prosthetic leg. The the first female double amputee from the war is also the first disabled woman to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
Duckworth spokesperson Kaitlin Fahey: “For the next 16 hours, Rep. Duckworth shared the names of Illinoisans killed by gun violence, captured photos and videos of her colleagues after Republicans turned off C-SPAN’s cameras, and eventually even got out of her wheelchair and sat on the floor — all to protest Congress’ inaction.”
Last week Politico named Duckworth’s challenge against GOP Sen. Mark Kirk the #1 Senate campaign most likely to produce a switch in parties this fall. The Washington Post called it the “most competitive Senate race in 2016.” Roll Call labeled Kirk “the most vulnerable Senator in the country.”
Brillant!

Oliver took a step back to the evening of the referendum to show that many U.K. voters had no idea what they were voting on — and had buyer’s remorse the following day. “Basically, it seems like whoever the next U.K. prime minister is going to be, whether it’s [former London mayor] Boris Johnson or a racist tea kettle, they are going to be in for a rough few years, because once they invoke what’s known as Article 50, they’ll have just two years to negotiate their withdrawal and future relationship with the EU,” explained Oliver. “On top of which, they’ll have to settle outstanding bills with the EU, hammer out new trade bills with dozens of countries, sift through thousands of EU regulations and decide which ones to keep, and figure out how migration will work—and all the while, lives hang in the balance.”
Here’s a more complete bio of Duckworth. We need to have her in the Senate.
Craig good news about your dad, thanks for sharing.

A Donald Trump speech after rewrite by people who can use coherent sentences.
Hillary & Warren campaigning together today. Rally will be shown on C-SPAN beginning 10:30/7:30 AM ET/PT
Think Kirk will try and make a big deal out of Duckworth breaking the House rules and smuggling a cellphone into the chamber for the sit in? If so, think anyone will give a sh1t?
Hoarding Cash in Vaults Seen More Attractive After Brexit Vote
The mind boggles that a large institution would seriously store their money in physical cash.
Making payments with pallet loads of cash? All shuffling around with fork lifts?
Craig… great news about Dad.
Jace… good luck as you get your and Cheryl’s new home put together.
I need to get my butt outside to take some photos of our garden and plants.
I’m with Flatus… we need Tammy in the Senate.
bits and pieces in the list from
Alexandra petri:
The pound may have experienced a drop of 7.6 percent, which is, as the New York Times notes, 21 times its usual average daily move, since the vote to Brexit.
But a similar devaluation is taking place across the board in Britain’s intellectual exports. Here are a few other downgrades.
[…..]
Doctor Who is now PhD Candidate Who.
The Queen is now The Jack.
Henry VIII has been downgraded to a normal-sized man with no more than three wives.
Monty Python’s Flying Circus has become Monty Python’s Grounded Petting Zoo.**
Tea has been downgraded to Coffee.
Boris Johnson has been downgraded to Donald Trump.
‘Pride and Prejudice’ has been downgraded to Prejudice.
just about all the insider types I’ve talked to think Clinton is just wanting to look like she’s considering Warren, several think she’ll go safe with Tim Kaine — I still think Warren possibility is real
The pound’s dramatic decline is the biggest impact of Brexit so far
Well it looks like a UK vacation just got cheap. Also good news for you scotch drinkers.
You Jamison drinkers may want to think about Bushmills instead.
Is there anything elsen the UK produces one might want?
Oh, I forgot, cheap haggis.
Jack
hurrah for the senior mr. crawford and happy new hunting grounds in gatorland to mr. bob
I met Duckworth once, a very nice woman and a fine legislator. Too bad she has to fight slime each election.
Will the Brits Brexit? It sure sounds like a lot of the great unwashed masses are finally reading the the note that said if you leave the E.U. now it is much like becoming a backwater small country off the flight path.
Now that they understand more of what they did, will they push the technical rewind button and try again? Since Cameron said he will not push the button marked 50, that gives them a month to figure out what to do. So far the official non-betting political site does not have a market for Will the Brits do Article 50.
“Is there anything elsen the UK produces one might want?”
jack, don’t forget the bass ale and boodles gin
oh and yes, all those flags and gewgaws with the union jack on them might be really worth something someday
btw, what did the original English flag look like?
Craig – so far the official non-betting political site is showing Kaine over Warren. Looking at life from HRC side, is she likes safe and someone who will not outshine her which would be Kaine. But, I know this argument is out there, she needs someone who is unafraid to say the line which Hillary is not able to, which is Warren. Warren could be her Biden. I like the idea of Warren, I do not think in this election she would lose votes due to being “outspoken”. The men who vote for HRC are going to no matter who her VP is. But, having a two woman ticket could bring in a few of those who might vote Green instead of HRC due to her “trust” issues.
Holy Chunnel. The collective English nose has been found lapping in the waves near the Belgium shoreline next to those big coastal high rises (trump-style). Putin celebrates as his sanctions will not be as heavy as they will be on the Brits. Watching Jerry, Rupert and Donald — those rich bags of water in the golf cart? Pound for pound, not a happy group. Sometimes the wealth of the heart weighs more than the empty suit of the land barons.
in re flag of jolly old whatsit, wiki says:
In 1188 Henry II of England and Philip II of France agreed to go on a crusade, and that Henry would use a white cross and Philip a red cross. 13th-century authorities are unanimous on the point that the English king adopted the white cross, and the French king the red one (and not vice versa as suggested by later use). It is not clear at what point the English exchanged the white cross for the red-on-white one.
There was a historiographical tradition claiming that Richard the Lionheart himself adopted both the flag and the patron saint from Genoa at some point during his crusade. This idea can be traced to the Victorian era, Perrin (1922) refers to it as a “common belief”, and it is still popularly repeated today even though it cannot be substantiated as historical.
On the origins of the flag and its connection to the Genoese flag the Duke of Kent remarked in 1992:
patd – the “modern” English flag is the St. George version, white field with a red cross on it. When Scotland was brought into the fold the Union Jack was created by merging both flags.
In the U.S. you can see the St. George’s flag flying over Prince George’s County, Maryland
Cheap haggis, gin and Guinness? Don’t forget scotch (if Scotland doesn’t cut & run). You guys can have the gin & haggis, I’ll take the Guinness & scotch. Jace, wanna go halfsies?
Tammy Duckworth is an awesome human with incredible spirit.
I watched Cspan during the Brexit and dems’ sit-in. The coverage was so much better than cable. Noticeably missing from the solidarity group? Sanders? He was too busy with his own agenda…he really was never a dem and his 1994 stance on assault weapons and his overall early dealings with the NRA? He is phony when he claims to be anti-NRA. I am glad HRC made him a better candidate by getting him to admit about the truth about his 1994 voted on assault weapons and his rewriting of his personal political history. Warren will wipe away any Bern redsidue. Bern? He hasn’t worked in the Senate for months!
gov christie todd Whitman:
If they actually wanted to do something, they should have been asking for the House to take up the bipartisan bill by Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) that was then starting to move and has now actually passed the Senate.
Collins’s bill, “Terrorist Firearms Prevention Act of 2016,” would prohibit gun sales to people on two terrorist watch lists, including the No Fly List. U.S. citizens and permanent legal residents could appeal if their purchase is restricted and would get their attorney fees reimbursed if they win. The amendment would also give the FBI the ability to be notified when someone who has recently appeared in a broader terrorism database buys a gun.
[….]
Our elected officials on both sides of the aisle need to stop playing games and start putting policy before politics.
didn’t know that collins’ bill “actually passed”. did it or is this just wishful thinking by Whitman?

In Cincinnati, Clinton and Warren will discuss their shared commitment to building an America that is stronger together and an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top.
Now that he finally seems to be disappearing slowly if noisily as Warren steps into the populist role more effectively, I would like to point out that courtesy of the media love fest, Bernie Sanders has never been vetted by any of them. We know Hillary’s past for good or ill on actions and taxes of the past 25 years. Bernie has never been vetted or researched other than in minor ways on Twitter & blogs.
elizabeth warren about trump: “watch out for he will crush you into the dirt to get what he wants”
I may be over protected. The Family paintball assault team. My son Chris (middle) and his boys David & Anthony.
Bloomberg quotes the speeches:
“Hillary Clinton will be the next president of the United States because she knows what it takes to beat a thin-skinned bully who is driven by greed and hate,” Warren told more than 2,000 gathered in the cavernous Art Deco half-dome of Cincinnati’s old Union Terminal. “She doesn’t whine. She doesn’t run to Twitter to call her opponents fat pigs or dummies. No, she just remembers who really needs someone on their side. And she gets up and keeps right on fighting for the people who need her most.”
Clinton showered her own praise on Warren’s ability to stand up to Trump. “I must say I do just love to see how she gets under Donald Trump’s thin skin,” she said. “As Elizabeth made clear, Donald Trump proves every day he’s not in it for the American people, he’s in it only for himself. And Elizabeth reminds us of that every chance she gets because it is really important that voters here in Ohio and voters across America understand this. She exposes him for what he is.”
They both also chastised Trump’s response to the United Kingdom’s vote to leave the European Union, arguing it’s a reminder of his singular focus on himself and no one else. “Trump cheered on Britain’s current crisis which has sucked billions of dollars out of your retirement accounts because, he said, hey, it might bring more rich people to his new golf course,” Warren said.
Supreme Court: Domestic abusers can be banned from owning firearms
Ya know, maybe this is a bit politically incorrect,
BUT , there is something to be said for someone who can take their leg off and beat their opponent over the head,
It doesn’t happen every day.
Jack
Ya know, unless HRC has a prior agreement, what she is doing with Elizabeth Warren constitutes a formal agreement for her to be VP. There is no way she can walk away with out causing unbelievable damage. If she does not select Warren then she is what my dad would have called a “prick teaser” and that is not someone she wants to be.
Jack, being politically incorrect x2
Following some bloggers on different blogs, their comments over the last few weeks has been contemplating the major effect of no Scalia to suck the 1100’s into the Supremes. I think we are seeing it today more than last week. With Thomas forced to ask a question for the first time in ten years, and writing the dissent (oddly with Sotomayer) regarding lethal arms for domestic assailants, it is looking like the conservative side is sort of lining up less 1100 than say 1935. Although letting McDonnell go free stinks, the issue against him was more jello than cement, the cases are looking resolved closer to reality than fantasy, think Citizens.
BB
What I saw in this court was a serious small c examination of the constitution. The rejection of obama’s over reach on immigration. as well a Texas over reach on abortion. nothing radical either right (citizens united) or left.

Chili Peppers Could Free Us From Opioids
hey chilis are just as addictive as heroin but a lot cheaper.
and taste better too. time to go get my chili fix.
Jack
Looks like things are being clunky today on the trail. Must be the heat.
Jack
I was delighted to see that Kennedy hadn’t moved to the crazy side. Can’t wait to read the opinion and the dissents.
“clunky”?
jack, it’s not been limited to the trail. have had trouble with a few other sites freezing up today. sun spots? hackers? troll tricksters?
whskyjack is on fire today 😉 Were any chili peppers involved?
The image of Rep Duckworth “using” her leg to get the point across reminded me of Preston Brooks & his cane. Only Ms Duckworth is sane & fighting for the right cause. The Senate would benefit from the addition of this fine American.
Tim Kaine for VP? Nooooo. I get the reasons why he might be chosen but from the outside it would look like one more insider feeding at the trough. Senator Warren has serious cred with the unaffiliated & disaffected. I know. I’m one of them. Would her inclusion be one more vote for Secretary Clinton? Yep. Yep. And Yep.
Pat
Thanks for putting up Hillary and Elizabeth.. Amazing the two of them.. I like them both so much and i think it’s a very powerful ticket.. I like Tim Kaine but it’s a boring choice..
It might be good time for Flatus to get a new Rolls.
I could abuse a case of Samuel Smith (of Tadcaster, England) brown ale.
I agree with those that want E. Warren over T. Kaine as Hillary’s VP choice… he’s dull as dishwater.
Xrep… Rick loves brown ale…. had one at supper tonight brewed here in NH called Smuttynose Really Old Brown Dog.
I don’t like the Kaine proposal. Not enough ooomph. Give me someone who can turn a big red state to blue. TX, GA, IN, TN, or AZ would work for me. Fewer than 45% of Texans are non-Hispanic Whites, and there are 38 electoral votes available. In a year when the rippers are in disarray and heading for an election disaster, it might be worth the risk. Georgia and Arizona are ready to turn also.
The trump/Sanders lesson this year is, BOLDNESS works ! Folks are fed up with congress critters and governors who just raise campaign money and collect paychecks. This is a year for a Francis Drake, Henry Morgan, or a Nellie Bly.
If Hill picks Tim over Liz she’s the establishment fraidy cat I fear she is.
Thanks for the tip, Renee. I’ll look for Smuttynose Really Old Brown Dog. My favorite local is Schell’s Dark. I’ve loved it for nearly 50 years.
X
You make the most valid point, boldness, true.. Warren would be a bold choice.. Some may worry Hillary would be upstaged but i think that wouldn’t bother Hillary at all, lol, she’s used to that some with Bill :0)
I agree, Craig. But, what’s Warren getting besides a portrait in the Hall ? She has much more power in the Senate. I’ll bet her deal is Clinton’s active support for Warren to be the Majority Leader, or maybe even the Whip.
By the way, good news about Dad. Puts a smile on my grumpy old puss.
Tony, HAHAHA. You’re so right. But, I think the days of Bill upstaging Hillary will come to a screeching halt at the Convention, during the first ballot – right after they call for Pennsylvania.
We’ll all have to turn down the volume or go deaf.
Xrepub, forget Dem Senate Leader for Liz. Chuck Schumer and his Wall Street buddies have already nailed that down, a big reason they want her in VP slot, out of harm’s way. Make no mistake, Wall Street owns the Democratic Party, including Hillary. Something Warren will have to wrestle with if asked.
Cincinnati TV station interview with Hillary Clinton.
omg, yes! i didn’t think i wanted warren as vp- then i saw them together – hand in hand-a beautiful thing, tears to my eyes. i know past would approve too.
Sea, I agree but Liz will need assurances that Hillary will put her Wall Street ties aside. Otherwise she’d be a sellout.
Great picks for V.P….
Klobuchar (Minn.)
Castro (Texas)
Kaine (Virginia)
Brown (Ohio)
There are many more…
I thinkClinton will pick Warren but there will be no prior discussion —
Until now Taft is the only Republican candidate to come in 3rd
While ordering a sandwich the other day, a young woman seeing my Hillary button said…I’m for Barney Sanders…how quickly they forget…
The Warren pick makes so much sense that if Hillary doesn’t do it then we will know for sure she works for Wall Street.
Since we don’t have Molly Ivins anymore, we should import this woman :
http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/uk/2016/06/i-want-my-country-back
I also like Warren but find it a bit over-the-top to say we will know Hillary works for Wall Street if she selects one of the other qualified people to be on the ticket.
Yeah, Craig, I know Schumer is a corporate slut and the likely Leader. Whip might be OK, but Sherrod Brown is great, too.
I’d just hate to see a woman of Warren’s experience, brilliance, guts, and moral compass stifled in the VP position. AND, I want to cut a big chunk out of the red dragon (the red N on the US map)
except for the Mass. gov being a gooper
Wish BIG. Work like hell. Vote early and often. That’s the ticket.
Btw, is anyone dumb enough to be trump’s veep ? Congressman king ?
Newtie’s out but apparently Trump is saying Corker is a possibility but Corker is running from Trump
Xrepublican,
Louie Gohmert for VP trumps Steve King in my humble opinion.
******
Wouldn’t it be fun if the Presidential runner up became VP? Used to happen. Think of the possibilities for all the wacky situations that might arise.
Louie!!!! That would finish off the Republicans. He does not get enough attention
Katherine Graham Cracker,
Louie is gold.
I will admit to not knowing our Vice Presidents all that well. I did write to Spiro Agnew as a child (why not?) & received a lovely form printed letter with an obviously auto-penned signature reply in return. I do have a fondness though for any Veep who wore muttonchops.
Well, for what it’s worth, I’m a little tired of all this b******* about Hillary needing to yield to Bernie’s demands, remember Bernie? He’s the one who lost to her in the primaries. And now what we’re hearing is Hillary needs to give in to Elizabeth Warren’s proclivities or she’s a sellout. I assume you mean that Warren would be a sellout. Reality check. Hillary WON. Bernie lost, Warren is being considered for the No. 2 spot to Hillary’s no. 1. She’s endorsed Hillary, is campaigning for Hillary. While I think that Warren is a formidable VP choice,, she’s getting into Hillary’s campaign, not the other way around. Here so get on board I am too big portions calories campaign or she won’t be the VP choice.
What pogo said!
To balance the ticket and get WallStreet on board in a YUUUUUDJ way, a phantastically YUUUUUUUUDJ way, and to reeeally balance the ticket, and to bring on board a monster of a money raiser, HRC could pick JEBUS H.
snicker
And don’t forget Warren isn’t totally pure- remember she she supported Cape Wind-which in the end basically fell apart because the costs were so high that Star backed out- not that the politicians backed off because our electric costs would have quadrupled, not to mention that every surrounding town (like 45 of them) didn’t support it. Such a scam…
rippers are making a big deal about Blumenthal consulting for $200k. Let’s subpoena karl rove and find out what he makes.
