The beloved poem House by the Side of the Road by Sam Walter Foss is now pretty much forgotten but it was once one of the most popular poems in America.
People recited it at meetings, stitched it into samplers, framed it and hung it on thousands of walls. Sportscaster Ernie Harwell alluded to it when a batter was out on a called third strike, as in “He stood there like the house by the side of the road.”

Foss had no pretensions, which may be why he doesn’t appear in many anthologies of great American poems. He wrote hundreds of comic, homespun poems that championed the common man in his battles against pretentiousness and authority.
He was born June 19, 1858, to Polly and Dyer Foss, farmers who lived in Candia, N.H. His father died when he was four, and his mother then moved to Portsmouth, N.H. After he graduated from Portsmouth High School, he earned a degree from Brown University in Providence. He married the love of his life, had two children and for many years worked as the librarian of the Somerville Public Library.
In a poem that typified his theme of the virtuous common man versus sanctimony, a storekeeper wants to join a church but the church doesn’t want him. The storekeeper is told to go talk to the Lord. He then comes back and tells the congregation he did talk to the Lord.

Court blocks returning signs to Acadia, other national parks and monuments.
Federal officials were ordered last month to restore the signage by Friday, including displays at Acadia National Park on warming oceans and Wabanaki heritage.
The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston ordered Thursday that the federal government does not have to return signs to national parks and monuments by the end of this week, including ones on climate science and Indigenous history in places like Acadia National Park.
Federal officials were ordered last month to restore the signage by Friday, including dozens of Acadia’s displays on warming oceans and Wabanaki heritage.
The appeals court effectively paused that order on Thursday, a day before the materials were to be restored, while federal officials appeal the June decision.
In March 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order, titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” directing the U.S. Department of the Interior to ensure signs on federal properties “do not contain descriptions, depictions or other content that inappropriately disparage Americans” and “instead focus on the greatness of the achievements” of the country.
That was followed by a similar order from the secretary of the interior.
By last September, the Interior Department had ordered Acadia rangers to remove signs from some of the park’s most popular sites, including Cadillac Mountain, Great Meadow wetland and the Sieur de Monts Nature Center.
In February, half a dozen organizations, including the National Parks Conservation Association, American Association for State and Local History, and the Association of National Park Rangers, filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court of Massachusetts, under the Administrative Procedure Act. The suit argued that the removal of the signs violated the National Park Service Centennial Act and is “arbitrary and capricious” as well as “excessive,” according to court documents.
A judge granted that motion last month, and the signs were set to be returned by Friday. However, the Interior Department is appealing that decision, and the appeals court ordered Thursday that the signs do not need to be returned for the time being.
The court’s decision cites that the department has made “a strong showing” and is “likely to succeed on the merits of its appeal,” and the return of the signs to national parks and monuments at this stage would be “burdensome” in such “short order.”
It also notes that, should the department’s appeal not survive, the plaintiffs have not shown that the delay “would cause them substantial injury.”

Fireworks woke me up last night. Here’s the finale as seen from Trail Mix International Headquarters.
A few years ago I used to do what the Red Cross calls “Go teams”. We would be in small teams of three or four. One carried the radio, one the pack of supplies, first aid and water, one the flag bag, and one the leader, we were all leaders so an extra one was the observer instead. We cover inaugurations, large events on the Mall, and the big one 4th on the Mall. Basically we were the eyes and ears for security and the trusted help in emergencies.
We were cleared by Secret Service, even though they jammed our radios without working with us on frequencies, since then that was fixed. The best event, according to me, is 4th on the Mall. Lots of happy people, good music event, and right up to the fireworks. I preferred doing the zone around the Washington Monument. Going home we would be covered in the waste of the fireworks. Occasionally there would be more than the usual scrape or heat issue. One time we were wrapping up and a tourist stepped off the walkway and broke his ankle. That one took some time because the EMT’s were wrapping up and not close by.
There was always the one thing we trained for that apparently was not covered yesterday by the not Red Cross. Severe weather. The museums had doors ready to open for visitors, buildings were set in case of life threatening weather. We always prepared to direct people on where to go and how to get there without panic. Too bad the political event was not prepared.

The most stunning controversy of the 2026 World Cup erupted on Sunday after it emerged that President Trump personally intervened to have U.S. striker Folarin Balogun reinstated for the team’s round-of-16 game against Belgium following his red card in the previous round.

Schumer and AOC have already picked sides. I am going to be very interested in what Debbie Dingell does. She is a smart pol who keeps ears to the ground, kept telling 2016 HRC camp they were losing but they wouldn’t listen.
The Republican Mike Rogers is unopposed, of the few non-Maga types Trump let have the nomination. We can’t let them pick up this seat, or winning the Senate could really be out of reach.
