Sunday Serendipity

By Jace, a Trail Mix Contributor

A work befitting the beginning of Holy Week. Some rather contemporary sounds from a most uncontemporary source. A moment of meditation for those who are so inclined. As always, enjoy the music, but above all enjoy your day!

Good Palm Sunday to all.

Thank You jace.

Do churches still give out palms? We used to keep ours until they dried. Hosanna, Hosanna.

I have a 5′ tall brugmansia I winter indoors. It is blooming this week, lovely, large apricot colored blooms. The scent is similar to Easter lilies. Perfect timing.

I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud
By William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Now that the floater took his Russian connections off the table by blowing up a few sheds (maybe) he is “looking presidential”.  That is probably the greatest joke of the decade.  The joker is as much presidential as the rear of a horse.

Thank you for reminding me that I hadn’t done a salute to my favorite flower this year.  Hope you and Wordsworth don’t mind the theft.

BB, but it looked impressive from the deck of the guided middle ship. That was more important to drumpf than causing any real damage. He wasn’t trying to make an impression on Assad. His intended audience is here.

Jace,

Absolutely beautiful as always with a great deal of meditation to consider.  The joy and praise of the crowd on entering the city, only to be followed by the last Supper, betrayal and darkness of the Crucifixion while among other tables, the joy of deliverance from slavery with Passover.

Tenebrae Factae Sunt (Darkness)Darkness fell when the Jews crucified Jesus:and about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice:My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

In both cases, great gifts and great sacrifices followed by great celebrations.

Excellent selection, Jace.
Back in the ’50s the Holy Season and C.B. DeMille were inseparable. I’m more than pleased that love of the music survived while other things faded.

patd – exactly.

If anyone would like to watch a website be developed (from the public side), I am building a new WordPress site,  Buena Ventura.  That is the name of the US Navy vessel my great-uncle was killed on in 1918 by the Germans. The main portion is being fleshed out over the next several days.  After that the changes will be minor.  WP makes it easy to put replace stuff on a template, a lot less intense than writing code in HTML, C++, php and sql the old fashioned way.

jace,

Lovely traditions but wondering for how long. A number of churches in my area (one near me, in fact) is surviving by renting out space to other organizations & even other congregations.

Anyone here have special food traditions, either for Easter or Passover? My Mom used to make homemade candy eggs – used the recipe from the back of a Jell-O pudding mix box circa the mid ’60s. Coconut Cream for Dad, Chocolate for sister, Butterscotch for brother & me. Thinking back they were uber sweet but the love that went into the making & decorating is what mattered. I could make them but it’s just not the same.

Seeing pots of Easter Lilies in the local market makes me happy. I’m a cheap date 😉

Down deep in Virginia I saw a bumper sticker, on the rear cab window of a pickup truck, “Still Praying”.  My immediate thought was ‘so what’.  But, I also thought of low news channel faux news and its cult followers.  America is one of the most religious countries on this planet and they can’t grasp it.  I will give that a large number of the religious are no longer fond of demonstrating it in a formal manner, hence a lot of the pastoral flock are not supporting brick and mortar places anymore.

Too bad that those people think that they are the only ones who pray.

Then: We made a bunny cake (2 rounds; one for the face & one for the ears & now tie) with 7-minute frosting.

Church, then dinner & cake…and so much candy.   Oh, those hard candy eggs with a chewy, marshmallow middle.  The next day, deviled eggs with specks of blue & green where the dye leaked through.

Now: Church on TV, FaceTime with relatives…some sort of candy.

sj – I’ve never heard of jello pudding candy.  (We did make jello toast when we ran out of jelly as kids.   Just sprinkled the kind of jello that has sugar in it on top of hot, buttered toast.  Eww!)

blueINdallas,

Pudding Eggs were basically: cook 1 pkg pudding mix with butter & milk until thickened then add lots of confectioners’ sugar & nuts , if desired. Shape into eggs, let harden, then dip in melted chocolate or butterscotch chips.

Lindsey was on a roll this a.m.

“Here’s what I think Assad’s telling Trump by flying from this space: ‘F you,'” Graham said on “Meet The Press.” “And I think he’s making a huge mistake because if you don’t worry about what Trump may do on any given day, then you’re crazy.”

…..responding to a question whether there is any moral difference between chemical attacks and barrel bombs.

“I’ll say this, if you kill babies with conventional bombs, it’s still a moral outrage,” he said.

XR—–

I wandered lonely as a clod,
Just picking up old rags and bottles,
When onward on my way I plod,
I saw a host of axolotls;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
A sight to make a man’s blood freeze.Some had handles, some were plain;
They came in blue, red pink, and green.
A few were orange in the main;
The damnedest sight I’ve ever seen.
The females gave a sprightly glance;
The male ones all wore knee-length pants.

Now oft, when on the couch I lie,
The doctor asks me what I see.
They flash upon my inward eye
And make me laugh in fiendish glee.
I find my solace then in bottles,
And I forget them axolotls.

Who Makes The Profits?
The World War, rather our brief participation in it, has cost the United States some $52,000,000,000. Figure it out. That means $400 to every American man, woman, and child. And we haven’t paid the debt yet. We are paying it, our children will pay it, and our children’s children probably still will be paying the cost of that war.
The normal profits of a business concern in the United States are six, eight, ten, and sometimes twelve percent. But war-time profits — ah! that is another matter — twenty, sixty, one hundred, three hundred, and even eighteen hundred per cent — the sky is the limit. All that traffic will bear. Uncle Sam has the money. Let’s get it.
Of course, it isn’t put that crudely in war time. It is dressed into speeches about patriotism, love of country, and “we must all put our shoulders to the wheel,” but the profits jump and leap and skyrocket — and are safely pocketed. Let’s just take a few examples:
Take our friends the du Ponts, the powder people — didn’t one of them testify before a Senate committee recently that their powder won the war? Or saved the world for democracy? Or something? How did they do in the war? They were a patriotic corporation. Well, the average earnings of the du Ponts for the period 1910 to 1914 were $6,000,000 a year. It wasn’t much, but the du Ponts managed to get along on it. Now let’s look at their average yearly profit during the war years, 1914 to 1918. Fifty-eight million dollars a year profit we find! Nearly ten times that of normal times, and the profits of normal times were pretty good. An increase in profits of more than 950 per cent.
Take one of our little steel companies that patriotically shunted aside the making of rails and girders and bridges to manufacture war materials. Well, their 1910-1914 yearly earnings averaged $6,000,000. Then came the war. And, like loyal citizens, Bethlehem Steel promptly turned to munitions making. Did their profits jump — or did they let Uncle Sam in for a bargain? Well, their 1914-1918 average was $49,000,000 a year!
Or, let’s take United States Steel. The normal earnings during the five-year period prior to the war were $105,000,000 a year. Not bad. Then along came the war and up went the profits. The average yearly profit for the period 1914-1918 was $240,000,000. Not bad.
There you have some of the steel and powder earnings. Let’s look at something else. A little copper, perhaps. That always does well in war times.

Mr Sturgeone, you are a Sherlock ! Axolotls are cousins of mud puppies. I happen to keep a large mud puppy in a glass jar in the garage. He is preserved in formaldehyde, and I don’t dare bring such a big carcinogenic item upstairs, where innocent and unwary people live. I have no idea what to do with such a hazardous jarful of biological oddity. Therefore, the mudpuppy preys upon my mind as the multicolored axolotls prey upon Mr Anonymous’ mind.

Also, General Butler is a hero of mine for ratting out irenee dupont’s plot to depose and replace FDR. Oddly, irenee was not prosecuted for sedition. FDR was an old softie. He could have deported fr coughlin to Canada, also. Ottawa would hanged the wretch.

Also again, George Washington Plunkett is also a hero of mine, despite the fact that after a long career in it, he rose to the very top in Tammany Hall.
